    The best thing about Bettany Hughes is the passion for her subject in her voice. No matter what topic in her documentaries you can tell she really loves learning this and talking about it. It's as far from a cold, dry recitation of a subject as you can get. I never fail to learn watching or listening to her documentaries.

    The soundtrack really breathes life into the images. It transports and eases you into an ancient state of mind. No matter if it's nothing like their music, the important thing is the sensory experience.

    • @dukenegju
      @dukenegju 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Didnt like the soundtrack actually, I don't find it resonating to the land, zone, culture, and it plays with emotions of anxiety and unknown bad darkness. @@dukenegju It's been a year since I watched this, but you may be correct. I have had phases in my life when I listened to reconstructed ancient music (Synaulia etc) so I am probably pretty biased. I assume the people who are interested in ancient history have been exposed to the same limited well of music reconstructions! The "foreboding" or ominous character of the music adds a mysterious and sort of legendary feeling I think, rather than angst or darkness. Though, the minoan culture was wiped from the face of the earth so it would fit the narrative I think!

    "Mother nature having a tantrum" ! Beautifully put ! Can one imagine 100 foot waves (about 30 metres) ? I experienced massive waves on the island of Tenerife, about 50 foot (15 m) high and they were terrifying - one sudden wave nearly swept scores of people, including me and my family, off the beach into the sea by the backwash, we held onto each other for our lives. But that wasn't a Tsunami, just "normal" Atlantic waves. A true Tsunami must be absolutely horrifying. 😵

      It must have been a horrifying experience and she was extremely lucky to survive. The experience we had at Tenerife one year earlier (2003) really showed us the true force of nature and when the great Tsunami of 2004 happened, we could really imagine the horror and destruction it caused. I have always loved the sea, but after Tenerife I look at it through different eyes - as your sister most probably does after the far worse event she went through.

      I can well imagine ! I have experienced the power of the North Atlantic Ocean in Scotland's west coast, in France, near Bordeaux and in Brittany, in Portugal, near Cape St. Vincent, and Tenerife, as I said in my comment. When there were high waves, the were really HIGH ! Truly awe inspiring and extremely dangerous and never to be ignored - some people did when I was in France, and paid their foolishness with their lives. I know the North Sea, which can also be very rough, the Baltic and the Mediterranean, but no ocean I have ever seen has the wildness of the Atlantic. 😰

    One can well imagine that after such a cataclysm, after such an absolutely massive Tsunami, that the survivors discarded their Earth Goddesses and began to worship the ocean in the form of gods such as Poseidon, deeming him much more powerful - he was also thought to be the source and master of earthquakes, so they obviously also hedged their bets at the same time, worshiping his oceanic power but also over that of the land. This is such an excellent documentary, brilliantly presented and narrated by lovely Bettany Hughes. To think that the ultimate survivors of the fantastic Minoan civilization fled to the top of mountains, literally just clinging on to life in horribly bleak conditions, hoping above all hope to survive and one day return to the shores of the sea that had destroyed the lives they had known before.

We've had elaborate sewer systems, aqueducts and even Islands were drinking clean waters by drilling into the mountain from both sides while our advanced mathematics, especially from Thales that built many famous ones, they were able to drill from two sides and meet with exact precision in the middle, bringing water to our first city-states. All these helped keep our sea clean and avoid diseases while in Britain even until 19th century, they were defecating into the rivers that were drinking from dying from cholera and other horrible illnesses.

    Hmmm. The Egyptian link is new and would make sense. The Apis bull was one of the earliest Egyptian gods and held power over fertility, harmony, balance and eternity, not to mention was closely associated to the goddess Hathor and Ptah (crafter god). Bulls we’re a big thing in Minoan culture. There’s also a theory that the two goddesses were the early incarnations of Demeter and Persephone, linked to Poseidon and possibly Egyptian influence through the bull cult turned Ptah into Hades (my own theory).
