Seeing Tally-Ho in the water is just amazing. I've followed this story from the beginning and have marveled at the complexity and attention to detail Leo and crew undertook. Congratulations to the past and current team member for a job well done. To Leo, you are a lion amongst the sailing community and a great asset in preserving this cherished form of transportation. I have watched every single episode since #3. I am now 73, and some. I broke down completely when the drone shot at the end of Tally Ho cutting water came up. This is just so wonderful. I KNEW Leo could do it, from that first video. This is the only project I have ever subscribed to. Every two weeks another automatic donation is made, and has been since Episode #3, because the _idea_ of saving this magnificent boat was too majestic to ignore. Well done.
I've been aboard the whole time too. Thank you for I am poor. Although I gave a bit you are a real part of Tally-Ho. A reminder to everyone that even a small donation when made by so many viewers really adds up.

I had a smile on my face the entire time that Tally Ho was under way. I have been watching the construction of Tally Ho for more than two years. I am a long term finish carpenter and custom cabinet maker. And I have to say that the wood workmanship on Tally Ho is quite exceptional. Thanks to all of you there for the videos.
I am 40 years old from Sweden. I have followed you and tally ho from almost the beginning. And I was crying from happiness when you left the harbour! Cant wait to see her with sails ❤

@@oso9809 I think you are probably joking, but for anyone else thinking this in earnest, it has to be pointed out that they first have to set up the intricate rigging, (which takes time even with low stretch rigging, because a hull which has never been subjected to rig tension will only slowly settle into its loaded equilibrium shape) and check all essential systems in case of misadventure. The anchoring system in particular is the last line of defense if motor and sails are compromised.

The complexity of building a ship like this was beyond my comprehension. The woodworking skills demonstrated in this boat are fantastic. She is a real beauty.
Your channel was the last thing my father and I watched together before his passing 5 years back from cancer. He never missed an episode back then and I have never missed one since then. Every time I watch I am reminded of our shared love of wooded sailing craft and the pacific north west. He would have loved to have seen the finished boat. Great work Leo and team.

Leo, I must say that was a lot of fun to watch. It's incredible to see this sculpture of Timber to be put into place buy your own hands and to take it out to see for the first sea trial is actually pretty exciting. I'm sure it was much more exciting for you than it was for us watching but I can't wait to the actual first sale trial with all the sales app I can't tell you how much I wish I could be there❤❤❤❤😊😊😊

I got my father in law hooked on this as well until his passing in January. When he was in the hospital near the end, I would bring in my laptop so we could watch them together. I wish he could have hung on for a little longer. I know he would have loved that shot of Tally Ho leaving the breakwater.

It's time to read that book again. I try to re-read it every couple of years. Thanks for the reminder.
Never worked wood, never sailed, but love and learn so much each week from Leo and his team. Most of all, perhaps, I’ve learned about faith and trusting in others and dreaming big, and the overwhelming power of positive thinking. Just reading the comments alone every week is enough to bring tears to my eyes (let’s not even talk about the floods unleashed by the launch!); the belief in our common humanity is so strong in this wonderful Tally Ho community.
I’m a conductor, working with teams of musicians every week to bring music alive. Leo inspires me on every level as a leader, and I’m so damn grateful for his work and the inspiration he brings to us all. I’m also so appreciative of the phenomenal skills he uses in lining up his music selections to the work in hand, whether it’s matching a hand-drill’s pitch to the music’s key (recently) or playing with Poncho’s dancing or someone’s hammering…
And finally, living in Bath, UK, very close to where Leo grew up in Somerset and first apprenticed in Bristol, a shout out to a West Country boy making such waves around the world! 👏👏👏
I grew up in a (wooden) boatyard, it was my playground from the day I could crawl. Thanks to Covid, I have zero sense of smell (or tase), but I love the way when any joinery work is being done, I can smell the teak (or pine) as distinct, identifiable smells.- same for tar, oakum and linseed oils. Remarkable.

Getting a little emotional at seeing the grand lady on the open sea. Love the saloon table. So happy that the "new" Tally Ho has elements from the "old". George has done a tremendous job of repurposing original timbers, planks, etc. Tally Ho is truly a sight. No, she's not the fanciest, or the biggest, and maybe not even the fastest (still to be seen), but because of this channel, she is one of the best known and loved. I think that when I see her under her own sails, I will be shedding a few tears of happiness. Amazing work Leo, and everyone else who has laid their hands on some part of this amazing vessel.
I would argue about the fanciest. The workmanship is absolutely beautiful!
@@allenwilliams6882 I agree that the workmanship is first rate. There is no doubt about that. What I was getting at is that she's not tricked out like some vessels are. But she doesn't need them. Simplicity has an elegance all its own.
Very much not the fastest. Her primary characteristic is her seaworthiness. Even when she won the Fastnet she was nowhere near the fasted boat in the race. The weather that year was so absolutely foul that all the fancier faster boats retired, unable to cope with the conditions. Compared to modern boats she is heavy and her rig is less than efficient. BUT she is flexible, capable and above all seaworthy. She was designed before we had satellite weather forecasting, when there was no option to run away from storms, or helicopter rescue if something broke. She's a magnificent design, rebuilt/restored to an absolutely magnificent standard. And she is durable. Few boats built in 2024 will survive 40 years, let alone 100. With the lessons Leo has taken from the issues that lead Tally Ho to decay, particularly the structural use of iron bolts and frames, which have been replaced by bronze during the restoration, it is possible for the boat to continue indefinitely.
Everyone was so utterly overjoyed at being out on the water, it's infectious. I'm sitting here just giggling as I watch Patty and the rest enjoy the fruit of their labor. When you finally set off on your grand adventure, please, PLEASE, hopscotch your way down the west coast into several ports of call so all of us can see this magnificent work of art. Thank you so much.

Seeing Tally Ho set free was deeply and surprisingly emotional after watching so much incredible labor to get her to this point. I don't sail, but I have become thoroughly engaged with this project. I'm grateful for the opportunity to share your adventure!
Seeing Tally Ho in open water under her own power hit me even harder than the launch I wont lie. We've spent so long watching her sit on stands high and dry that watching her cut open water brings a genuine tear to my eyes. This may be a stretch but it feels like she's finally coming home, to the sea. She's been away on land so long that my heart leaps seeing her finally back where she's meant to be; even if it's only trials and testing.
The day we get to watch her under full sail again will probably bring more happy tears to my eyes, I'm beyond excited. Leo you've done something incredible, beyond words.

I'm 76 years old. Sometimes I thought that, similar to the O'henry story "The last leaf", I might leave this world before I saw the Tally Ho in the water, and only the delays were keeping me alive. Thanks for making it happen (I'm still here).😊😊

Amazing! There’s something about the way Tally Ho sits on the water that makes you want to shout “Tally Ho”! She is one classy bird.

I've been with you since the start. However, in the beginning I called the project "mission imposable." And of course Leo saw the same thing, going with a rebuild, rather than a "restoration." The workmanship is astounding, but the management of the project is miraculous. How can one guy be blessed with talent in finance, personnel management, public relations, advertising, fund raising, and videography, while also being a genius level shipwright, boat designer, and craftsman. And then to make the rest of us feel even more inadequate, Leo turns out to be the most personable guy on TH-cam!! This post is effusive, I know, but I suspect it will not be the only one.

So many years I’ve just been a free viewer. From the guy with the rotten old boat and a parrot, to this video, in some way it was a special day for me too. I simply cannot imagine the elation for you and your crew. Congratulations Leo, I cannot wait to see her under sail.

I was amazed at how the teak looked after planing. It looked like it was milled just recently.

Did he keep some of the sawdust in a jar so he could smell it once in a while. I used to love the smell of the sawdust in my dad's paternmaking shop in Tacoma. This was in the 50's.
Same goes for the transom that Leo himself did. If any, the videos about making the new transom by using mostly old transom parts are my favourites. I've watched them at least 4 times.

Of note: Admiral Ship Supply helped me immeasurably when I had a number of issues with my travel trailer (aka "camper"), including refilling the propane tanks. I have watched since day one, and it’s been incredible to watch, I love woodworking and I did a lot of it when I was young, but a family and putting food on the table and all I left it to take care of my children. Now my children are grown and are having kids of their own and watching the magnificent woodworking you have created got me back to woodworking again and I have grandchildren to make things for now. So thank you for inspiring me to get back to my shop

I've been following Tally Ho's restoration "live" since about episode 30 or 35. I, too, binged until I caught up. Now I have to wait 2 weeks for the next episode. I am jealous that you have been able to simply play the next episode as soon as you finish one. I am not a patient man (I am told by my daughters) so always waiting two weeks just about kills me. Thank God for the capstain side project!

I am always blown away by the beauty and quality of the woodwork in Tally Ho. It really demonstrates how boatbuilding is the meeting point of an art and a science.

Leo has poured so much life into Tally Ho, and now that she's alive again, she's pouring it back into him.
For when you fuel her up, it would be a good idea to commission someone to make you leather aprons. I don't remember the name of the ship (it was also a restored one), but in France, i saw a schooner that had this. A long leather apron with a hole in it and buttons to affix it to the ship when they were fueling up. I'd say it was about ... 40 cm wide, maybe, and had a blackened color, armost charcoal like.
That would be an excellent idea. There's always some spillage of diesel at the worst moments.

I have been watching Tally Ho be turned from a sad almost derelict hulk into a truly beautiful work of art and so wanted to watch her pick up her skirts and head into the waves for the first time in decades. Wouldn't you just know it, at the very time she leaves the harbour for the first time, I was aboard my own boat which had sat for five years as used as a floating apartments tied to a pontoon, while its previous owners did their best to make her totally unseaworthy and which I have spent almost two years repairing the damage they did. Before moving her from where she has lived for the past 20 years to her new berth on the South Coast of the UK. Given the date on Leo's clip, we were halfway through our own four day voyage when Tally Ho ventured out into open water and I missed it. But despite that, I can say that both Tally Ho and my own boat were re-born at precisely the same time although not perhaps to the same standard, my cabinetry, engineering or shiprite skills not being quite as good as the magicians that have created such a stunning vessel as Tally Ho. I really hope Leo brings her to the UK because I for one would be in the floatilla that greeted her if he did.

I rarely see any design elements here that I don’t think are perfect, but as a furniture maker, I imagine those thumb screws on the underside of the saloon table are going to catch on people’s legs and clothing and become a hassle. Fortunately, there are lower profile ways to secure the fiddles, so it will work out. Beautiful table.
Agree. Some custom dome nut thumb screws would be better.

It looks _so_ small from the outside yet the inside is _so_ spacious. What a beautiful sight to see Tally Ho underway. I can’t believe that I’ve watched from the beginning and yet feel that this restoration has happened too quickly.
Boat size doesn't translate well into video. A 50ft boat feels a lot larger in person than it looks on the screen.
She is such a lady on the water! Damn, that's one fine ship, Captain! She's a credit to all the craftsmen who worked on her. I hope that all that knowledge, contained in all those fine men and women, is not lost, but goes on to create more beautiful wooden artifacts.
It's extraordinary when you reflect on this process. All those skilled and committed young people working their asses off to create a boat - that will just sail away. All their experience, hard work and love just disappearing over the horizon. And when people say, as they will, in many years: "Wow the craftsmanship back then!", Tally-Ho will proudly carry the record of all the blood, sweat and tears that went into those young people's learning, perfecting and performing their chosen craft to produce this remarkable craft. It's a record of hope.

i really cannot wait to see her under way with full sail up, what speed will she do, will she match her previous speeds, she was built for it, this will be so epic to see and compare with her past history, and race her, its going to be real sweet to se Leo's face and feel that speed under his feet - like many here, this is pretty emotional to watch, so much pride in what you have all achieved - and lets not forget boys and girls, i am really not into boats, sailing or anything, not even into woodwork that much, but i do love old engineering and appreciate everything that goes into this build, well done Leo, well done crew, and well done Tally Ho

Six years ago and two weeks before I started watching Leo and Tally Ho, I had found a 1928 Alden Schooner named Tradition in a slip in the Ala Wai Harbor in Hawaii. My friends father skippered her out of Greenport NY in 1938 and then as part of "The Hooligan Navy" during WWII. She had since been sailed hard and put up wet after the war and was now being used as a condo for many many years. Tradition is in serious need of rebuilding, although not as bad as Tally Ho, and as I watched Leo get her on the hard dry, I fantasized that this was what should have been done by Tradition's scallywag owners, but NO.
Leo, you are an inspiration to all wooden boat owners around the world, showing what passion, proper planning and sharp tools can accomplish. BRAVO, BRAVO.

After watching Tally Ho's resurrection and Arabella's birth I realized that I'm not a craftsman yet, just a fairly skilled hack.
Both crews have done amazing, sometimes mind-boggling, work.

TH-cam is a weird thing. Yall wouldn’t know me if I walked up to you yet I feel like I’ve been part of this project for a long long time and I’m super proud to see what you’ve accomplished. I got teary when I saw Tally Ho finally out at sea with Leo at the helm. Congratulations!
In the water she is smaller than I thought.....Ok this applies to all boats. Nice minimum bow wave and the trough is well suited on the hull. Yep it looks like the carefully replicated lines hold up over time. Yea I cried too. Nice work ladies and gentlemen. And oh yes thoughtful work with the fenders and lines, for those of you who don't sail running around with the fenders out is rather like walking out in public with your pants unzipped.
One more personal thing I would like to share, in my retirement I am teaching young machinists how to design in CAD. The first lesson is watching the Video of the lofting of this boat. This is the best work I have ever seen on how to thoughtfully design. Yea maybe few understand but the elegance of how to design is something I have found very hard to express, Than you sir.

Oh how wonderful. As a boat builder and now trying my hand at TH-cam, this is a really beautiful moment to see, capture etc. I've been on so many sea trials with new and custom boats and it never fails to feel fantastic. I've been following this build from a year of so in. I then had to go through all of them. It's been brilliant.

It must seem weird, running under relatively quiet electric propulsion and looking up to see...no sail.
Really can't wait to see how all these modern engine, battery storage things work out. Like the prop charging the batteries when you are under sail.

But beyond all that, just seeing her cut through the water, so smoothly after all these years, just kind of takes your breath away.

I just went back and watched the first and second videos from 6 years ago again. Then I watched this video and got a lump in my throat. What a long journey of dedication, joy, disappointments, shocks, reassurances, surprises, stubborn persistence and stiff upper lifts. What amazing things are possible when many good-hearted people come together with one aim, one goal. Thanks to everyone from an 82 year-old land lubber that loved this journey greatly.
Boy, smiling for sure. This series just gets better and better! Last time I was involved in sea trials was in 1969 preparing to sail to Viet Nam on a US Navy ship. The Tally-Ho sea trials are exciting for an entirely different reason. What a thrill to see her in the water. Thank you so much Leo and Crew. Wow!!

So graceful, elegant and beautiful... It was worth every penny and all the effort. When Tally Ho arrived in the first workshop, I was definitely not convinced that she would ever sail again! Then all the obstacles and the pandemic. Leo got stressed at times, but never failed to keep going, and now she is sailing as proud as ever. I think she's at least as good or better than she was over 100 years ago, and the way she goes through the water, she is definitely made for sailing fast, which the initial tests also prove. 8 knots is really good... The worst is over, Tally Ho is the boat that TH-cam built, now I for one can't wait to see what's going to happen from now on. All the best in the world to Tally Ho and everyone who sails her in the coming many, many years! ❤❤❤ Ps. Where IS the fecking front door?! 😂
I broke down sobbing tears of joy seeing her raising that white water around that gorgeous hull. Honestly don't know if I have ever seen anything as beautiful as Tally Ho, knowing all the work and care that went into, her history, Leo's determination, etc., etc.

Wow she sits well in the water and motors along pretty well, 8knts is quite a good pace for a ship that size. Well done to all of you guys, I've watched since the beginning and like stated in some of the comments below I got all teared up seeing her out in the bay. Tally Ho is a testament of the skill of all of those who have worked on her. I did my apprenticeship as a boilermaker at a shipyard in Pt Adelaide and it's all ways a joy to see ones labours come to fruition. Well done Leo and Co!
All those utterly excited boat builders faces at 16:50 had me tearing up. The glee and delight of a first tree house morphed into maturity.

When I found Leo and Tally-Ho back in 2017 when this started, I thought Tally-Ho was gigantic. Everything about the boat was enormous, from striping the hull to fabricating the ribs and on and on. I am over the moon to see her under power and making bow waves in the sea. I never missed an episode and feel a part of the adventure. Leo, you can sell the wooden scraps to your You-tube family to let them feel more connected. I would sign up, for sure.

Congratulations! She really looks great moving in the water and WOW that boat was fast! I love the low profile and how the main hatch and the skylights are unobtrusive. That must have been a very rewarding experience for the crew to finally go out in the beautiful boat that they built with their own hands. There is nothing better in woodworking than strongly scented woods! I love the smell of old growth Teak, Red Cedar, Tennesee Cedar, Yellow Cedar and one of my favorites, Port Orford Cedar.

Good job, George! Talking with you at the open house last fall, you mentioned that you try to stay out of the videos. But you did a great job with your intro to the table.
I am not a sailor, nor do I play one on TV. But Tally Ho looks like she has a nice line in the water. I have watched from the beginning and I have thought about this phase of Tally Ho for a long time. So beautiful and what a crew and community you have managed to assemble. You ROCK... all of you.
