I had strongly considered tossing my new CNC into the street and being done with it. As a beginner I've watched a lot of CNC videos, this one really met me where I was at and turned things around for me. THANK YOU.
Thank You for all Your help! Just got my 3018 Pro Ultra...with your help, I got it built, online, and made my first stencil.... I'm a disabled veteran, and had absolutely no computer skills, much less CNC skills, and with your help, I made my first exact stencil successfully!!!! Much Love and Respect, truly.
I consider myself an 'advanced beginner' and I did pick up a few tips here. One thing you didn't cover for the beginner is how to open the file containing the code for the job. I generally use Easel so, as you know, you have to export the SVG file and open it in UGS. I have found a number of your other vids helpful. Thanks for posting.
some humor for you james. i just ran my program from easel for my house numbers on a piece of mdf to check the program and my homemade cnc. everything was going good apart from some burning when the bit was working in a small section. 90% complete and the oval cut out started to wander so i stop the program. stupid me put the bit in upside down. a true rookie mistake. lol
Can't say anything any better than those before me......Just glad I found you when i did. I was about at the same point as jamiepierce2055 was a year ago. Bought my CNC for one very specific use (Blue and Red line flags). Ordered it, and while waiting , built 2 workbenches (1 for my CNC, and one for a planner). And had time to come up with A LOT' of other uses besides my flags. So excited about starting my CNC experience. Just A LOT to process and learn. Thanks to you, it's (alot) easier. THANKS!
You don't need to do much holding down. It is sideways movement you need to prevent. I have two inch wide discs with several holes in them at various distances from the centre. Get one as close to the job as possible, rotate it until it presses against the side and tighten the screw.
AS usual a verry good video , you are a good engineering instructor ,keep, on going and i like your instructions ; it reminds me empirical itterations ...thanks a lot
Even after following this video step by step, I still can’t make this machine, software or whatever work for me. I’m really thinking of returning it now. But I wanted to thank you for making these videos, yours is the best I saw. Thank you!
@mlcyane8446 if not done so already, join one of the main group like Sainsmart or FoxAlien on Facebook and post some photos with as much information as possible or even a video if you can. And hopefully I'll see it and can probably help you out better than on here
For all of us brining pre-made cad files into carveco (I bought f16 cockpit plans). You should mention on how to force the workspace “0” to the bottom left or right or whenever. When brining a premade file in, it will set 0,0 at the center of the workspace, then when you export into ugs, it will cut all messed up because zero on the bed and zero on the workspace pertaining to your tool paths is very very different
That's nothing to do with the file your importing, that's the initial screen when you create Carveco file. When you click new in Carveco it will ask where you want the job to start from, you just need to select bottom left or bottom right. This is covered in my Carveco Maker series of videos
Greeting James, I have foxalien Masuter pro with the extended kit. Thank you so much for the guidance your channel has provided for me. I have a few strange issues #1 I have set my zero on the job for the x y and z axis, then jogged in and set height for the spindle with the probe touch, the returned to zero.. all this works great as per your instruction. #2 the spindle does the same project about 4 times then I have to stop the machine otherwise it keep doing the same job
It is always a pleasure watching your videos. Clear and easy to follow for a beginner like me. But one thing I am not sure with the newer version of UGS. Return to zero button becomes lowering the z axis to the spoilboard not on the material. Can you confim this Mr. James? More power and Many Thank for making time sharing your videos.
Thank for the videos. Super helpful. My only issue is that I created a project in easel, saved the g-code and opened it in candle. Everything workd fine except the spindle wouldn't spin. I tested the spindle and it works. Just won't spin during the job
I now understand better how to use the program sort of. To be honest not one of the video's I've watched is really explaining how to use the program for the first time for beginners. I'm confused but I'm going to try in the morning and see if I can get it to work. I'll update then. Funny how I can build a computer from bare bones and program it starting with DOS but I can't figure out how to run a CNC 3018 LoL. I probably understand more than I think I do, I just need to do it I'm sure.
Some of my earlier videos may be helpful - not sure if you have seen this one byouit probably covers it in a little more detail th-cam.com/video/mUO6d7MaeCA/w-d-xo.html
Always great content. Thanks for all the work you do for the CNC community. Question: any plans on reviewing the Genmitsu 4040-PRO? It seems a good machine, priced relatively low but not enough informaton or even reviews on TH-cam for it. Thank you.
Can you run through the process of changing bit during the job? For example I have GCODE with a pocket toolpath and the countour tool path. Looks like UGS finished the pocket but now I have to switch the bit to the countour to cut it out. How do I go about resetting the Z height
Great video!! I have this cnc machine. I bought it after watching your videos. Ultimately I want to machine a guitar. 🎸 am able to fit a body on the bed, but for a neck. Need something a little bigger. They have a 1313 frame upgrade which measures 52 X 52in. My concern is the stability of the cnc at that size. Do you have any intel on how stable that would be? Thanks! Bert
Hi James thank you for your quick response I know nothing about cnc machines and have started watching your channel fantastic you answered my questions last night but could you please tell me in idiot language please I have looked on line as some printed stencils and would like to transfer them so I could carve them out what software would you recommend and is there any tutorials that I could go to to see how this is done Dave
Fantastic James.thank you. Your content never disappoints! The question I have concerns Z height when changing tools during a job:.i.e using a !/4" end mill for roughing and a 1/16" to catch what is missed by 1/14". While I appreciate that UGS has the Z zero we set initially, I cannot see the tips of the tool being in the same point in space. Also is setting Z zero when working with V bits? FYI I am new to CNC world, getting started with Genmitsu 4040, Carveco Maker and UGS. As always Thank you for all you give to our community.
I'm just awaiting delivery of my first CNC machine (Woodmads CNC Router WM3020 ). I am going through all your videos at the moment. Something I never see (so far, please excuse if i've missed) is squaring up the material on the spoil board, should we not do this with a set square to ensure the tool is running exactly square to the job? Many thanks for all the time and effort you put into these videos!
Hi David. I briefly cover it in some of my spoilboard videos but it really all starts with ensuring your machine is as square as possible when you start building. If you're fairly confident everything is running square then you can engrave a grid on your spoilboard. You can then align your material to that grid. This thing to remember as well is do not assume your material is always going to be 100% square.
Great video James, if I am cutting the same material (12” vinyl records) do I need to do continue resetting the xy and x positions? Also where do I put my xy when my material is round and not square or rectangle?
O.just bought a cnc machine but after watching this I'm sending it back, I do a lot of laser engraving and I like having the ability to see my designs overlayed on the medium I'm using
thanks dor the great tut. one question : I have made my own diy cnc and i am using nema 17 stepper motor. downloaded grbl to the cnc shield and when it gets to UGS the rpm max is 300 if i turn it to 400 and above the stepper mottor frezzes ? is anyway i can bump the speed ?
Very helpful video. I forgot to save the console settings from my machine and can't go back to the factory ones. Tried to access your website but it seems to be down. Any chance of you having the settings for the Vevor S4040 CNC machine saved anywhere? I am still waiting for their customer service to reply. Thank you in advance and keep up the great work!
Hi James, just down loaded UGS and working through while watching your video, very informative but i seem to be running in to a couple of issues, probably operator error 😊, when Jogging the spindle to the corner of the material the jog controller is staying on Jog instead of returning to idle, any suggestions would be ver,y much appreciated, my Masuter pro goes unresponsive as well until i shut everything down
Hi James thanks for quick response the cnc mother does turn on and spin in candle but when I send the file over to ugs the machine goes through the motion but cnc doesn’t spin I have joined Facebook just waiting for an acceptance I hope it’s worth all the bother when I do get it setup just frustrating so so near Thanks dave
Hi James, thanks for these tutorials, finding them very useful. I have a 3018 pro and Vcarve Desktop but each time I try to run a job that I've done on Vcarve using UGS, it places it outside my work area. Ie in the bottom left! I just got the lunyee 3018 pro ultra cnc and can’t figure out how to connect it to my MacBook. I’ve watched video after video and ur so detailed but I’m clearly missing something. In this video it shows u opening the usb they sent with the machine. The file u opened was drive. I don’t see drive on mine.. ? Please help. Thanks
I keep getting an error code.error while processing response < An unexpected command was completed by the controller > could you help a novice and let me know why I got this and how to correct it. Thanks
Hi James, I'm having a problem with scaling. I draw something in inches using Aspire 10.5. When I bring it in UGS or Candle it comes in small, you can't hardly see it. I have everything set in inches. HELP
Mine is the dewalt D62600 which is basically the UK/European version of the DWP611. I just have a 3D printed one which I made and it does the job. I guy I know sells some on his site. I've not personally used it though www.mmandls.com/product/foxalien-4040-xe-dust-shoe-vacuum/
Hi James, I'm getting an error code when I try to set up my husbands cnc machine. Also when I try to "home" the machine, it goes to the left, not right side, how do I fix it?
Hi James, as you know I am setting up my device. I got as far as installing the drivers. I have the USG file, but when I downloaded it, I could not find the file to install the software. A little help would be greatly appreciated. I am eager to get started with making items to sell at the craft fair season venues that I have lined up. In addition, please let me know how to become a patron so I can access you knowledge in the future. Thank you for your help in getting me started even though I am six months late from when my 4040 pro was delivered. I hope you had a wonderful weekend.
Hi James, have you any idea why when I set my Vasto to carve, it carves the toolpath trails and not the job? Also, when homing, the Z axis is fine, but Y hits the lilit switch (which I have tested and it works), do the motor continue to run, they don't stop and back off. Any help greatly appreciated. The machine has worked but has just thrown a wobbly! Same results using UGS or Candle.
Thanks for the video. It would be helpful if you paused between particular details. The video goes full bore from the start without a breath and I have hard time finding where one idea starts and another ends.
All was going fantastic until I clicked on connect and now I am getting error while processing response and error has occurred while processing, I have rechecked all my settings and they are fine, any ideas anyone please?
Thanks for the very helpful video. However, I got to the very end. Literally, the very last step. UGS opens the file, but there is no option to start the process. Start button is greyed out. I have seen some comments online that UGS won't run a file more than 200kb. This one is 268kb. But I can't find a simple explanation anywhere of what to do. What am I missing?
I have used just blue tape before and it was OK a long as your piece isn't too deep, but found a significant improvements when I started used a low profile clamp
How do u make a gcode Like how u got james What software or app i can used to do it there some simple one from factory but i want to make one for with my name please help
I'm new at this and am playing with ugs. My DRO numbers are switched- the bottom numbers are giving me the readout from my last job's zero point, even when I'm at home position. Any idea how to reset the x and y to zero at home? The home position is in the opposite corner of where the zero x & y coordinates are.
Problem with my Genmitsu 4040 Pro Max. New to CNC. Using Fusion 360 and UGS. I've searched your videos and the internet. Can't find answer to my problem. I've tried every solution I've found on the internet. My problem. Cutting simple pocket in wood. The CNC cuts in the air above the wood. Can't figure out how to get the bit down to the top of the wood. I followed you zero Z axis video and it comes back to zero okay. Would like to send you an image of UGS screen but can't seem to do that. Thank you, rob
Thanks James do you know can i keep my probe connected on the masuter pro? because it looks to me if your gonna clip/unclip it 1000 times its gonna break i think? that little wire thats coming out of the controller box is not gonna hold a 1000x times... curious to your answer on this...
You can replace the clip with a magnet, and instead of clipping it on you just put the magnet to the collet instead. To be honest though, a length of cable and a clip is less than £2. If I got a 1000 uses out if it and had to spend £2 to repair it, I wouldn't consider that to bad of a trade as everything on these machines will suffer from wear and tear over time
Hi James, I have the 3018 PRO and have 2 questions if you would be so kind as to help me. 1) When I export the G code for a project into UGS to carve, there is no code to start the (or stop) the spindle motor, but when I run the project directly from Easel, it works just fine,So, first, why do you "strongly suggest running my project from UGS " instead of Easel, and HOW do I edit the G code in UGS to start and stop the spindle motor? Thank you so much!
Within Easel, under machine settings I think, there is an option for the spindle and the options are manual or automatic. Set it to automatic and then when you export the code it will include the relevant bits to start the sli
Hi I have a 3018 and the laser works fine. I am having repeated issues with the spindle engraving. For some reason the Z and Y axis move at the same time? When I put a project in the spindle works fine but at the start of the project the Z axis raises and starts engraving 50 mm above the wood. Has anyone else had this issue?
Hello, I have a problem with UGS and hope someone can help me. Every time I try to upload a NC file it shows the Name of the file under the visualizer but there is no Image and it shows an error that says: "Loaded File: 0 rows". I tried starting UGS again several times. I just have no idea what to do.
I'm using Ventric, the licensed version, I have UGS installed but you don't mention any way of using this (not that you are obliged to). However, do you cover this somewhere? Thanks
Using Vectric with UGS? So when you come to export your files you'll just need to select "GRBL mm" or "GRBL in" as the post processor. You can then load that into UGS and you're good to go
@@JamesDeanDesigns thank you. I found the cord finally . It was in the box but had gotten misplaced under the packaging. Thanks for all of your great instructional videos. Thay are very helpful!
Its one of the reasons I moved away from Easel, its tool database is poor and yes Carveco is better. I dont think you can enter a bowl bit. You can try entering it as a ball nose but that is slightly different because a Bowl usually has a flat bottom where as a Ball nose is rounded all the way
Hello James.. I have connection problem with my machine cnc 3018 pro connect with ugs.. It is successfully connected but the xyz is not moving and some icons is show in gray color.. What is the problem? I connect my cnc 3018 pro with candle it worked fine.. I hope u answer my question
Usually in my experience if UGS is saying connected and not showing all the buttons then it's connected to the wrong COM port. Double check your com port number and also make sure the Baud rate is 115200
I'm using ugs on Mac to control 4040-xe. All the controls work, except the spindle does not want to turn. I've tried the M3 M5, but that does not work either. Do you have any tips please😁?
It's not just M3, you have to type a speed reference as well so try m3 s10000 to turn on and m5 to turn off. If that doesn't work then you could try another piece of software like Openbuilds Controller to rule out software, or alternatively if you have a multimeter you could try doing some basic tests
Hi, people see about 1% of what I do on these video. They dont see all the time I spend off camera, the issues I run into and the mistakes I make. It's not all smooth sailing I promise you. Stick with it 👍
People are saying thank you hmm yes your very knowledgeable but your forgetting people like me that are new to CNC your covering way too much that it’s so confusing maybe slow do a touch and cover one thing at a time give us time to digest things
@anthonydipane7841 I'm not forgetting anyone, certainly not those who are new, thats who most of my videos are for. Pretty much everything covered in this video has been covered in previous videos on specific machines. I just made this video to try and put the process in one place and not be machine specific. I hope you get past this rut. If you're on Facebook, I'd suggest joining some of the user groups. They can be great for helping to get past certain problems
I’m sorry but way too much information in one hit for new comers like me I’ve got a headache trying to figure out what your going on about everything is set up perfectly for you but please stop and think about how much content your trying to cover you lost me ages ago

HELP
What post processor are you using. There are two you can use - GRBL mm or GRBL inch
@ I’m using GRBL inches.
Hi James, thanks for a very useful video. Can I ask what DeWalt router you have installed and is there a dust shoe you recommend for this router?
Mine is the dewalt D62600 which is basically the UK/European version of the DWP611. I just have a 3D printed one which I made and it does the job. I guy I know sells some on his site. I've not personally used it though www.mmandls.com/product/foxalien-4040-xe-dust-shoe-vacuum/
@@JamesDeanDesigns Thanks James, very quick and useful reply. Thanks for all the help and videos, much appreciated.
Hi can you save a gcode in UGS to a memory card or will UGS only send codes direct to cnc
My zero for xy keeps showing in the middle on USG when I have it at the bottom left. I'm also lost on how to get a cut image loaded :(
Thanks for the video. It would be helpful if you paused between particular details. The video goes full bore from the start without a breath and I have hard time finding where one idea starts and another ends.
Thank you for the feedback.
Why does it stop once its inside the wood??
Why is my Candle software carving the design upside down and backwards? I have a Genmitsu 4040 pro. It is the original design sent by the company.
Please help! I keep getting alarm 2 😫😫
Would blue tape suffice for aluminium engraving or should clamps be used?
I have used just blue tape before and it was OK a long as your piece isn't too deep, but found a significant improvements when I started used a low profile clamp
How do u make a gcode
Like how u got james
What software or app i can used to do it there some simple one from factory but i want to make one for with my name please help
I have the 4040 pro by genmitsu, and it will not connect to UGS. Or it says it’s connected, but you cannot control the machine.
If I got a 1000 uses out if it and had to spend £2 to repair it, I wouldn't consider that to bad of a trade as everything on these machines will suffer from wear and tear over time
@@JamesDeanDesigns no i mean the little connector where you connect the probe with the machine can i leave it in there?
All connected but machine doesnt move with the jog controls - any ideas?
When I s my cnc machine when moving the axis it grinds
Can mean one of a couple of things but usually that something needs lubricating or is possibly too tight
You can then load that into UGS and you're good to go
Thanks for the reply. I'll give that a try. @@JamesDeanDesigns
what cable do i need to connect my laptop to the 4040 pro?
Usually a USB A to USB B cable
@@JamesDeanDesigns thank you. I found the cord finally . It was in the box but had gotten misplaced under the packaging.
Thanks for all of your great instructional videos. Thay are very helpful!
Can you tell me how to add a bowl bit in easel,,, i hate they're bit database and cant seem to get it added,,, is carveco better?
Its one of the reasons I moved away from Easel, its tool database is poor and yes Carveco is better. I dont think you can enter a bowl bit. You can try entering it as a ball nose but that is slightly different because a Bowl usually has a flat bottom where as a Ball nose is rounded all the way
Is there an option in Candle or UGS to run the Gcode step by step? I'm trying to mill a PCB but the spindle always starts at a position I don't expect
I'm not 100% sure that is possible. You could open the file in something like NCViewer.com and that might give you a better insight
Double check your com port number and also make sure the Baud rate is 115200
Thanks very much I will Try
The buttons are working but when I press still the machine is not moving

I'm using ugs on Mac to control 4040-xe. All the controls work, except the spindle does not want to turn. I've tried the M3 M5, but that does not work either. Do you have any tips please😁?
It's not just M3, you have to type a speed reference as well so try m3 s10000 to turn on and m5 to turn off.
If that doesn't work then you could try another piece of software like Openbuilds Controller to rule out software, or alternatively if you have a multimeter you could try doing some basic tests
@@JamesDeanDesigns Thanks works perfect now👍
Why do things come so easy for you while I’m getting shunted all round my computer ??
Hi, people see about 1% of what I do on these video. They dont see all the time I spend off camera, the issues I run into and the mistakes I make. It's not all smooth sailing I promise you. Stick with it 👍
If there's one thing that will stop me, it's this software. I was in ONCE. Think I can get back there? Nope! EXTREMELY frustrating!!!
Happy 2024

I have question James, when i hit send the spindle does not start so i brohe one bit,
!can you help!
