I had the Distal operation in 2008. They removed the body, and tail of the pancreas, my spleen, a tumor and ulcer in my stomach and the lymph nodes surrounding that area! I have had 17 yrs given to me by the Lord ! I have had more great grands to see coming into this world and expecting my first great-great grandchild! I will be 80 in Nov.!!! Moffitt and Tampa General were fantastic!!!

I had whipple surgery in April of this year. I had 3 tumors on my pancreas. I was scared to death when I read and researched the type of surgery they wanted to do on me. I had the surgery and I'm doing great. It turned out that it was pre-cancerous. Thank God! It was a rough surgery, but I can eat just about anything I want and do most of what I could do before the surgery. I do tire easily, but that is to be expected. I thank God every day for my life and the incredible doctor who helped save my life.

I would say that the best preventative thing one could do is to ask (demand if need be) to have the pancreas scanned especially if having common gallbladder surgery as part of the over-all workup. I had my gallbladder removed in 2016 and they found a cyst on my pancreas with the workup. They followed the cyst with MRIs and after 7 years major changes developed with a "lesion" growing near or on the cyst and the pancreatic duct was dilating from the new obstruction and the tail of the pancreas was atrophying - all ominous signs for a future disaster. Had distal pancreatectomy with splenectomy, home after 4 grueling hospital days and pathology of tissues and lymph nodes was negative for malignancy. I'm lucky because as a health-care professional I knew the questions to ask. Remember, pancreatic cancer can go from Stage 1 to Stage 4 in ONE YEAR ! Be proactive. Much love to all !

These are success stories are great to hear about but with a five year survival rate of 5% for stage 4, it is a dismal prognosis. My mother got diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in April but it had already spread to the liver. They couldn't do anything but provide chemo. She tried folfirinox. It was too much for her. She tried 2 rounds and it made her too sick. Her last oncologists said we should have just tried gem and that would have helped her live longer without too many horrible side effects. As it turned out her last scan before she died showed the cancer got bigger. The folfirinox really did nothing, but just made her sicker. Once this cancer spreads there is no hope.
