I noticed that a ton of people don't know what Rune Factory is all about! So in this video, I not only talk about and share my experience playing through the latest in the series, but also dive deep into what makes Rune Factory different from other farming games! For JRPG fans who have been looking for a more low-key experience with a tinge of calamity, Rune Factory 5 might just be the game for you! I hope you all enjoy my review of Rune Factory 5!

As a big fan of the series I'm really happy that we get a new entry after 10 years of waiting.
The only two complaints I have are the performance issues that weren't fixed and I find that the new town feels a little lifeless design wise compared to the previous 3d entries.
Other than that it's a great game in my opinion.
I personally didn't feel like the town feels lifeless, especially since NPCs are pretty much present a lot of the time. There's definitely a lot of activity indoors, which is probably what people mean, though there are NPCs whose daily cycles lead them outside.
@@BacklogBattle I didn't mean lifeless in regards to the npc. I'm currently playing Rune Factory Frontier and to me the town in that game feels more "hand crafted" while in RF 5 it feels more like a terrain editor + buildings and objects placed afterwards.
Fully agree with this, Rune Factory 3 Oceans was my first and the town felt like its own character an interesting port town. RF5 town feels much simpler, almost like Animal crossing in style.
After seeing your review I'm more excited for this game than I thought! Still going to hold off though...want to see if it comes out on another console, but also my backlog says I shouldn't buy anymore games for awhile!

Well it definitely sounds like the game is as worth to try out as much as the older games. Glad that you became a fan thanks to this new entry and as someone who played Rune Factory 2, a bit of 3, 4, Tides of Destiny and 4 Special, it is great that this plays like a slightly better version of Tides of Destiny. Also, I already choose who I wanted to marry the minute I found out who voices the character AND once i found out she is a cute wolf girl so I got my wife all planned out lol. It does suck that this game has those same damn performance issues that Fairy Tail switch had, only this time I can't just buy Rune Factory 5 on PS4 because that doesn't exist so I will just wait until the game maybe someday will get a patch or update to fix those performance issues. Other then that, the game sounds like a good evolution going forward and as usual soild review Alex!

@@BacklogBattle Yeah that's been a thing for nearly every single game believe it or not lol. Like you have no idea how devastated I felt when I realized that looking back, I would have married the hell out of some pretty fine adult women if it wasn't for the games saying no you can't. It sucked lol.

For someone who is completely new to this type of game, would you recommend rune factory 5 over the other entrees? Or am I better off with an older title.

There really are no other games like Rune Factory, I’ve played 3 and 4 and been waiting for this one to release since it was announced, from what I’ve gathered from various reviews its far from perfect and has some problems but is overall pretty solid (you seem to love it which is good to see, opinions of actual fans of the series matter the most to me) I’m picking it up when it releases in Europe on 25th, I want to see more RF games in the future
I think we'll see more RF games in the future! It seems like the budget allows for these games to be made, which is a really good sign!
I'm definitely looking to pick this one up sometime soon. I've been wanting to get into RF for a while now, and this game just looks like it appeals to so many things I love in games.
The performance thing doesn't really bother me. To be honest, performance issues have almost become the trademark of games in the late 10s and early 20s xD
Though, I do wonder if this will get a PS4/Xbox/PC port like RF4 Special did... not that that'll stop me from getting the Switch version. I don't mind double dipping for a game I enjoy
That's a tough call. On one hand, if they did port it, they wouldn't announce it so close to the launch. I am curious how the better performance will affect gameplay on those other platforms though.
@@BacklogBattle Well, I think RF4 had like, a one year exclusivity to Switch, so they'd probably not even announce that til early next year if it did happen.

I lament the fact that our European friends won't be getting it until Friday! But it's releasing this week, so I'm excited to see you all play it!
I hope we will get an pc port, I remember investing hours of my younger days in the RF series, getting to know everyone on the villagers, facing dangerous boss,capturing monsters and exploring the world and mechanics like farming and fishing.

Great review. I was not aware of rune factory. It does pike my interests since I adore Stardew Valley and I noticed many similarities.

but from what I've seen from some videos in the past the town seems too big making it also feel empty
I could be wrong since I didn't look at too many videos about it.... hope they launch on PC in the future to see if the performance issues get better
The town didn't feel too big to be honest, and the fast travel points really help zip around town if needed.
You should really give it a try the first few hours are slow going through the intro story and a few tutorial things. After that though it is so fun. The game gives you plenty of time every day to find everyone and talk to them if you want to build friendships. You can upgrade shops and all kinds of cool things with directives. So far I'm enjoying this game more than RF4. Not that I don't love RF4 I just really like the 3d art style they went with in RF5.
I liked RF4S. I didn't get far into the third act though because the crafting system for high level items kind of broke my brain. So far I'm seeing mainly good things about RF5, but may wait to see if it gets a PlayStation release, or that it gets better performance-wise. I'm still interested though even if those things don't happen. :)
It's so difficult to decide whether to get this game now or, potentially, later given how there's no word of a port yet.

I agree this was the best rune factory/ best farmer since a wonderful life. I love the whole series but I hope they can fix the frame rate, that’s the only thing that’s killing my experience because a lot of this game relies on dodging and trying to get a perfect dodge is so hard. And especially when I’m in the field tending to crops, or chopping material the lag and put it’s just really bad. I hope they can port this over to consoles like the PS5 for a smooth frame rate
I’m hoping for a port myself! The dodging isn’t too bad, especially since the timing window is wide and the enemies are easy
As someone who is not really into farming games but enjoyed the demo of Rune Factory 4, should i get 4 of 5?
I personally like 5 despite the performance issues and prefer the 3D look over how RF4 looks. RF4 also has 24 minutes to a day when compared to RF5's 48 minutes, and has a ton of quality of life features that make the gameplay smoother. I say get 5!
I took a break from playing it yesterday because I apparently can't learn the recipe for level 87 dual blades despite the fact that my dual blades skill is 96 and my forging is 92
Edit: do I need those recipe bread + things?
Thanks for reviewing Rune Factory 5. I was holding out for a PS5 version of the game after hearing about the performance issues. But that never happened so I recently bought it.
I love you can pause the in game clock when you click left bumper so you can go through the quick menu. So you could pause the clock and go help a family member or get something to eat than like having to run to a save point so you can turn off the game or let your in game hours pass you by.
That’s definitely very convenient!
can't wait, it arrives tonight and i'll be tearing into it immediately. personally couldn't care less about a little stuttering in the game, i really don't understand the cult of the refresh rate with some folks - it's not virtual hydlide, geez. ;-)
good timing, as i just beat triangle strategy two days ago and have been dinking around with firis dx as an inbetweener since the game previous to that was sophie 2. :-P
please tell me there's no hurricanes this time? that and a few minor but everpresent balance issues are what did me in towards the end of rf4. i'm hoping they learned from those. seems like they fixed the insane battle difficulty spike problem from that one, at least.
Wow, that's really good timing! I actually skipped on Triangle Strategy because I was playing Rune Factory 5 and Elden Ring! Hope it was good!
@@BacklogBattle it was a mixed bag for me. the battles were fun and there's a ton of qol features in the battle system that are downright excellent and now i want them in every srpg forever. the plot is excellent, the characters are excellent... on the flip side, you have no hope of getting the good ending, ever, without an faq. the grinding stages are not balanced. there's less than a third as many plot battles as fft and a half as many as any utawarerumono game (that gets panned for not having enough battles). and the "conviction point" system is going to be very controversial from player to player, some will be fine with it, some (like me) will hate it. i still played it for 75h and got the good ending (with an faq help) and generally enjoyed it. but it also tired me out with lots of little thorns poking at me the whole time. i look forward to your review on it, it's likely to be compicated.
I probably won't be reviewing it to be honest. I love what Team Asano does, but as I've said before, I generally don't like turn based tactical games.

As a long time fan of Rune Factory, one of the things I'm most excited for is that you can finally marry any gender. Not just "because gay", but because being forced to pick a gender before the game even starts essentially locks you out of half the marriageable people before you ever meet them or know anything about them. You could go through the game and really fall for one of the bachelors due to their story cutscenes, but oops, too bad, you picked the wrong gender in the first 30 seconds of the game, start over if you like them.
Now I can actually pick based on whose personality and story speaks to me the most.
I’m really happy about the same gender marriage options too! Though the person I wanted to marry isn’t available! 😭

I have so many mixed feelings about this game. On one hand, I want to play it since I’ve been waiting 10 years and the game looks beautiful. On the other hand, I don’t want to play it because some people are saying that I should skip the game entirely. And because of the framing issues and whatnot. So what should I do?
I find it funny that people are saying to skip this. Skip this for what? Rune Factory 6? 😂
Honestly, if you feel like the performance issues are going to be a big deal for you, I'd go back and play Rune Factory 4 Special. The devs have not clearly communicated what each update will bring and what's coming, so we don't really know if the performance issues will be addressed. At the very least, RF4 Special exists and is still a pretty solid entry to the series.
You know, I think I’ll give the game a try. And who knows, maybe my copy will have the problems fixed.

@@BacklogBattle Noisy Pixel and Nintendo World Report TV present an alternative argument, though I tend to agree with your opinions here. Also SwitchUp, Nintendo Life, and The Gaming Shelf have good reviews too.
I always wanted to try it when it came out for ds but I always knew it was legit. The worst part about the game is the story/dialogue the best part is the gameplay. I like the elder scrolls do it level it up system. This game is so relaxing

I have and love my Switch but I really wish this was on the PS5. Switch frame rates are unplayable in 2022. It feels like going back to the PS3 at this point 🥺

Every game I've played on Switch and PS4 runs inferior on the Switch: Rogue Trooper, Chronos before the ashes, Hellpoint, Sakuna of rice and ruin, Dragon Quest Builders, God Eater 3, Dark Souls Remastered etc The Switch hardware was dated on launch, now it's archaic.
I play a lot on PC and going to my old PS4 Pro took a time of adjustment due to the low frame rates but at least most of them are stable, but going to the Switch from current gen and PC is not enjoyable at all, it puts me off buying another Switch game that's not a Nintendo first party game or a 2D indie title.
So yeah I wish this was on PS5/XSX, or PC as well as the Switch.

The thing is, just as the other commenter said, this being ported to PS5 doesn't guarantee it running well. It's just that the devs really don't seem to have optimised it for Switch. Cause that little outdated powerhouse can run Dying Light, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice or Life is Strange: True Colors without an issue based on what I've heard. Sure those games don't look as good as on PS4 etc in direct comparison, but that is the price you pay for the option of portability (and well, a consequence of it simply being 5 years old, as you say) 🤷♀️
@@Anni_ka I appreciate what you're saying and it's no guarantee you're right - Elex 2 being a good example of bad optimization on the PS5.
Still doesn't stop me wishing this was on PS5 though as the likelihood of something that looks like a PS3 game running well on the PS5 is quite high vs the Switch :)
stardew valley was way to stressful for me, this looks way more chill.
I'm here because the pc release. It's the graphics man. I loved 4, but why the hell is 5 worse looking and designed than frontier. Like I know it'll be fun and I heard the characters are better than most of the other games, but it looks so bad. Like it has normal AA jrpg character assets like the trails games and literal PS2 era environmental assets. I'll probably get it since there aren't the frame issues on PC, but I wish it looked at least like a good indie game
I definitely feel for you. Sometimes, big moves like going into 3D might be the wrong move, especially when it can't even perform well on the platform it's first releasing on. Why they felt the need to do this is beyond me, but I'm hoping that there are parts of the game that you're enjoying at least?

The impression I get from the review is that it's a game that's maybe spread too thin trying to do too much and maybe could have focused on a smaller set of ideas and made it a more robust package.
To me anyway, the review reads like "Atelier Ryza: But Executed A Bit Worse". I feel both games are going for similar things, but Ryza's smaller mechanical scope kinda helped its various elements feel more consistent.
Unless some word of mouth from friends convinces me otherwise, I'm cool letting his one pass me by.
It's not quite the same as Ryza, especially since farming in that series isn't really comparable. I also wouldn't say that there's a spread focus in this one, but merely that they want all aspects of the game to be something you can engage with easily as opposed to jumping through tons of hoops, which is why I spent a good chunk of time talking about RP and energy as it relates to other games in the farming genre.
Both games couldn't be any more different, with Ryza being a more traditional JRPG by comparison and RF5 having more things you can do like other games in its genre.
Seems like a JRPG version of Stardew Valley. I like the idea, definitely gonna keep it in mind.
With less hassle! A 48 minute day versus a 14 minute one in SV is a huge difference!
SV is *inspired* by old harvest moon, now story of seasons, and the rune factory games are a spin off of those games, so SV came *after* them. The creator of SV is an old fan of old Harvest Moon games (the japanese games, not the new Natsume with the original title).
You didn't play to other Rune Factory games, right...? No way your review would be THAT good if you did play them too...!!
But if you love this, definitely play Rune Factory 4 Special and look out for Rune Factory 3 Special, those were far better than this brightly coloured mess. And for me, they are two of my all-time favourite games.
I actually tried to play through Rune Factory 4 but I couldn’t really get past the way it looks! I might skip on RF3S because of it too. I believe you when you say that those two are better though!

And the look is a million times better too. + your eyes don't constantly burn from the colors ;) but as you seem to actually love the RF5 aesthetics which I find to be sooooo below them, I can see there is no common ground there. Regardless, they have worlds filled with things to discover and forage and no completely empty spaces. And all the charm

You didn't unlock the extra mode it gives you the option to upgrade your world level infinite amount of times so you can make the monster u face level 999 technically could be higher did not have enough seed points to test it.. So there a higher difficulty than hard if you choose it.
This still requires you to play much of the game, which does not at all invalidate the point that I made that the game is still easy. Especially since you’ll be playing a majority of it that way.
IThe game looks fun but performance issues for me is a HARD PASS.

Wish these games had more than just a fraction of the style and design of the original. This looks good to play but the visuals are so boring.
I love the old style but I like they are trying something new. I hope they make new games in this style but also other games in the old style like Rune Factory 4
In most games on switch that i watched the review , people were complaining about performance. So i gave it a shot and bought a switch. Returned it 2 days later, It was beyond disappointing (low resolution, very low frame rates on most games) .. selling those consoles should be illegal :/
