991.2... Am I missing out on anything??

  • In this video I put the two generations of the Porsche 911 991 side by side. A 2013 base Carrera 2 and a 2017 Targa 4. Is the grass always greener? The 911 was my childhood dream car. It's still my dream car. The first 911 I ever sat in was a first generation 991 (the 991.1) back in 2015 which gave me the push I needed to buy my first 911. A few months later I was a 996 owner. A year later I was 997 owner and now 2 years later I'm a 991 owner... but I'm the owner of the first, not second, generation 991. Am I missing out on anything?? Are there really any differences that I should care about?
As ever, thanks so much for watching my videos and supporting my channel. I do all of this because of my passion for cars and interacting with like minded car enthusiasts. Keep the comments and chat coming! More videos coming soon. Cheers!

I believe that the NA engines in the 991.1 will make these cars very collectable in future years, being the last years for naturally aspirated engines in the 911. I am taking very good care of my C2S (with sport exhaust), and enjoying it's naturally aspirated beauty! lol

I was debating on this as well, but finally picked 991.1s, which has the 3.8 na engine. The price even higher than most 991.2 base and similar to some 991.2s. But man, the 991.1 will be another 993 in the future. It is the last of an era, and it worth to buy and keep.

I've had a few G-model 911 in the past years and I never expected a modern Porsche could be ever attractive for me. Until I met the 911.1 - a friend got himself a 2013 C4S and I liked it.
One year later I'm the owner of a 2015 Targa GTS and a 2013 C4S Convertible. Different cars, different sounds, but for me the very best 991 cars, maybe the best 911 ever made.
The 3.0 in the 991.2 just doesn't' do it for me, the 992 is too digital for me and I am sure there will be a hybrid version in future as well.
    Save your 991.1's, gents. ;)

Peak torque coming in low in the rev range transforms the 911 driving experience and makes it more flexible in the 991.2. Ultimately making it easier to access the performance. 991.1 is still hugely capable and rewarding, you just have to work for it more.

    • @Nord_Mann

Agree! The 991.2 feels way faster than the few tenths of a second it really is. PDK will be and feel faster, but you miss out A LOT in driver involvement. Manual for me👍🏻 but then again I’m not really bothered with heavy traffic were I live and can enjoy open roads to a large extent. In metropolitan areas the PDK is superb, and will be faster on track too.

Good video. The 991.2 was actually the very first Porsche of any kind that I've ever driven. I drove it at Silverstone at the PEC. The performance difference really isn't in the HP figure, but in the flat torque line from around 2000rpm till almost full RPM. Where the 991.1 builds up torque which really kicks in at around 550RPM on my 3.8 C2S. That's where I think you'd find where the 0-62 gain lies. However, the noise from the NA engine wins me over, ever single time. I can't get enough of it.

I have a 2012 997.2 4S PDK. I really don’t get the obsession with the sound, a lot of Porsche people have. It’s the thrill of driving one of the most involving sports cars on earth not the sound of the exhaust. My best advice to anyone who enjoys driving over the age of 16 is buy the car you enjoy driving, not the one that makes the loudest vroooom, vroooom. You can always do that in your Cozy Coupe.

  • @danachampine1978

I too have a 991.1 GTS spec, I decided against the .2 gen simply due to sound and the reward of working the engine a bit more to get the full potential out of it. your specs for the 0-60 time are off quite a bit. your car is not anywhere near a second slower. I checked the Porsche site to be sure. the S and the base are still over 4 seconds, not until you get to the GTS does it drop. I remembered when I was looking the difference was .2 seconds .1 to .2 it simply was not worth the loss of the sound. Sure no apple car play...but really if you need that in a Porsche buy a SUV not a 911. Enjoy your 991.1 and never doubt your choice. Honestly you rarely, if ever get to realize the performance difference but you will notice the sound esp in the twisty bits and around town. the .2 is so muted at normal pace where as the .1 is beautiful sounding no matter where you are or what you are doing. Both cars are fantastic but I would have the NA over the turbo any day.

I don’t comment often, but love your videos. I went from a 2018 Cayman base to a 2017 4S (sports exhaust was a must). Obviously, was a huge leap. When shopping, I drove a 2014 S with an AWE exhaust. The sound was incredible in it! In the end I opted for the 991.2 so I wouldn’t lose HP to altitude in CO. Never looked back! 911s are all special and your friends Targa is gorgeous!

Spoiler alert! The 992 is dead boring to a 991, be it a .1 or a .2. The exhaust is just so muted, even with PSE engaged. Steering is brilliant though, but overall the 992 is just boring. Too clinical.

      @Carbonfiberchris 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Nord_Mann I have also driven 992 and will have to disagree on the sound. I thought with sport exhaust in sport mode sounded pretty darn good. No it didn't sound like a 997 GT3. Overall, I really enjoyed the driving experience of the 992. I liked the seating position, the handling, and that have slightly raised the dash. (Biggest complaint interior wise has to be the fact that you can't actually see the entire dash because of the steering wheel postion).

This is a comparison between a non-PSE PDK 991.1 C2 and a heavy well specced manual non-PSE 991.2 Targa 4. It’s 2 very different cars to compare. That’s also the beauty of the 911 range there are so many cars to choose between, and none are bad. I’ve had a fair share of different 911’s (-89 C4, -90C4, -90 C2 cab, -91 Turbo, -99 C4 Tip, -02 GT3CS, -05 C2S and -18 Carrera T) and have tested most generations and most engine specs and find them all very intriguing and satisfying in their own way. The -91 Turbo and the manual Carrera T I’ve got now really tingles my sensations. You should really try manual Carrera T. The sound is amazing and being manual you get to enjoy all the different sound it makes through the rev band. It’s the most interesting 4 seater 911 ever made and extremely entertaining.

The second generation is definitely better but it comes at a cost. The cost is mostly monetary. I would easily give up the change and sound for all the other improvements. I had a 991.1 Carrera S cabriolet that was loaded and had $150,000 sticker. I traded it in for a 991.1 turbo S. The difference in power alone is worth the upgrade. Imo

After seriously considering 991.1 S and 4S available on the preowned market, I bought a favorably speced, CPO 2017 991.2 base Carrera (Same interior options as your friend's Targa). At the time there was so much controversy about the turbo engine. Several months later, I am convinced Porsche will be praised well into the future for the excellent characteristics of this twin turbo 3 litre. A fairly modest investment in a Fabspeed center muffler delete and an ECU reflash gives this modest base 911 power that well eclipses previous S models. And the whole car is just so versatile. It's not a dedicated track car but it's close enough for anyone who can afford to own only one Porsche. My only complaint-- the S-wheels (like the ones on your 911), looked better to me than the slightly redesigned S-wheels of the 991.2. IMO, the only better looking Porsche offering is the GT wheels which ROCK. Thanks for the video.

Great video, as usual. Love the tutorials, but I prefer the videos of you behind the wheel. They truly show you as a great brand ambassador for Porsche. I'm torn on the 991.2. They are most definitely quicker than the N/A counterparts, but otherwise, they are basically the same. If someone wants brutal speed, they should get a 991.1 capital "T" turbo. The interior cabin and (by and large) the exterior of the 991.2 is just too similar to its older cousin in order to justify the price bump. Never driven the 992, but the light bar in the rear and the remodeled interior make them distinct from the 991.1.

Auto Amateur the used GTR’s are at a decent price but are more equal to a Jag.... and that actually is too small. At the same time, the only equal is (oddly enough) used E63S which from every review is better than the newer M5 (I had the F10 M5... manual ... mistake.. thus the M6)...but looked at the 997.1/.2 911’s and the lack of tech killed it for me.

Having a 991.2 C2 base with PDK and PSE that has a tune and soul performance exhaust make it an absolute monster compared to any 991.1 variant from GTS down. The stock capability along with the option to easily add significant power pushed me towards the 991.2. With a few thousand dollars aftermarket you can push close to 500hp/500ftlbs out of a base carrera and it will blow the doors off of 991.1S models all day long. SO if you like performance, and lets face it the 911 is a performance car, then the 991.2 is the clear choice if it fits your budget. If you just want a great 911 to cruise around town and listen to the engine then there are plenty of good options including the 991.1.

Prediction: Next video titled “I’ve sold my 991.1 and my new 991.2 is on its way!”
Enginewise I think the comparison is difficult with a manual vs. a PDK. You’re PDK is going to “feel” quicker than a 7-Speed. The added weight of a Targa over a coupe may skew the feel even more. Still I never took the time to compare aesthetics and I agree that the front and rear of the .2 look better than the .1.

I seem to be the only one to think that the outside of the 991.1 is more beautifull (just "right") than the second generation. I even prefer the so called eyebrows. The lights on the back without 3D seem more "classic", the new ones just a tad desperate to make them different to the 991.1. All that comes handy because I do think about buying a 991.1, Carrera or Carrera S. Hope it will happen in the next 6 months. If so it is meant to be my daily driver for the next 10 years or so. My boss showed me and a colleague his wifes new car just today which is of course a brand new anthracite 992 Carrera 4S Cabriolet. Even the red interior looked surprisingly good.
