VW 01M Transmission Drain/Refill

  • The VW Audi 01M 4 speed transmission is common to a lot of early Audi A3s, MK3, MK4 Golfs, Beetles, Skoda and Seat equivalents.
    There is no factory maintenance schedule and these are supposedly 'filled for life'. You'll probably feel better if you give it a service and get that the old fluid out.
    My service plan includes changing the fluid and filter. A couple of days later do a drain and refill to get some more of the dirty fluid out of the torque converter and then changing the diff oil.
    There is no dipstick on the transmission so follow this procedure to check the level after you are done:
    • VW 01M Fluid Level Che...
    Here's how you check and change the diff oil:
    • VW 01M Diff Oil Check ...
    The transmission fluid and filter change video will follow next time I do that service.
    The VW spec for the fluid is - G052-162-A2
    It's expensive. There are a few aftermarket fluids with the same spec. Here I'm using the Penrite Multi-Vehicle ATF which does not meet the spec but is acceptable according to the Penrite website. I use it because it's the only fluid that ever comes on special at Repco. There is a synthetic version that would be better but it's 50% more expensive. I've had a good experience with this fluid so far.

    The #1 recommendation I make to people changing the fluid on ANY component of their vehicle is to remove the fill-plug first.
    1. If for whatever reason you can't get it off, you aren't stuck with an empty/dry components (diff/trans/t-case/engine/etc.) and allows you to go & get the proper tool or new fill plug while the component is still full (AND IT'S STILL EARLY IN THE DAY)
    2. This will break any air lock that may be holding additional fluid in.

      +Synchromash that's generally true. This transmission has a plastic stopper for a fill plug so no issues taking it off. Cheers!

    Nice video, since its work on very old transmission I would just recommend to be gentle on the filler tube cause its plastic and it can crack in the base easily and fluid will leak from there. I speak from my own experience cause I had this case on my '97 VW Golf on which probably the mechanic of the previous owner did the damage so I had to close it with special two component glue..

      +Animwr Mwrani That's a good point and to avoid that you can fill via the G38 sensor hole on the top of the trans instead as per these instructions: kansascitytdi.com/01m-filter-change/
      This guy really knows the 01M well and has some great content.

    the process was left unfinished. transmission fluid is missing. maybe there was an error before you. You should fill 4 liters and then overflow to remove the excess You did a very practical job. congratulations on that.

      I thought the same thing, but in my owners manuel says 3 quarts, or 3.17006 liters (rough estimate) for just the pan. But the same procedure .

    Did you do the trans fluid change because of service time, transmission problem?

      +Eric Stuckey preventative maintenance. Still a good trans after 200,000kms but I've since swapped it for a manual trans

    When would you want to change the fluid and not the filter as well? Wouldn't that be similar to changing your dirty pants but not your dirty underwear? As dirty as the fluid appeared to be when you were measuring it, its probably safe to assume that the filter media has trapped a bit of dirt/grime and cannot allow the same amount of flow as a new filter would.

    • @Badgertronix
      @Badgertronix  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +CJ Hosey when you change the fluid and filter you won't drain all of the old fluid out as several litres get trapped in the torque converter, so I do a drain and refill a short time after that to try and get the fluid as clean as possible. See the valve body overhaul series for a dissection of this filter.

    • @cjhosey3438
      @cjhosey3438 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Im not trying to start an arguement or question intelligence, please dont take it that way, but I assume there is no benefit to clean fluid vs dirty- if the filter is restricted. The purpose of the fluid is not only to lubricate but to do things like create and hold hydraulic pressure to force clutch packs together with enough force to prevent slippage. Couldn't a dirty filter decrease flow enough to cause the transmission to slip? Wouldn't adding new fluid into the already contaminated system only pull more dirt out of crevices and allow the saturated fluid that's in it already to release some of the dirt in it and deliver more dirt into the filters media? I thought that was part of the reason for the replacing the filter, to trap the freshly released dirt from disturbing the system???? How many people have watched this video and felt they have done all that's required for their trans in their vw?

    • @Badgertronix
      @Badgertronix  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +CJ Hosey I value your comments but it's impossible to drain all the fluid in one go hence why the 2 step process is required. Obviously if you were able to drain all of the fluid at once then this procedure would be of little benefit and you would just change the fluid and filter. Yes a dirty filter would affect correct operation of the transmission. In my valve body rebuild videos I dissect the filter that was in the transmission at the time of this video after an additional years use. Judge for yourself how clean or dirty the filter was.

      I have just done the same job. There is no filter as you know it, just a fine wire strainer. If you feel you need the change the filter, take this out, flush it with petrol, and then make sure it is thoroughly clean and dry before you put it back. 10 bolts hod it in place.

      bit late, but I'll quickly chime in - The best thing to do would obviously be a flush. but, vw, in their infinite wisdom, decided that no one would ever need to change the fluid in this transmission. This is also why the only fill port is under the car, there's no dipstick etc.
      Flushing the 01m is damn near impossible, the only area I could come up with to fill atf in from the top is from the atf cooler - which is an insanely messy operation (I know, I've tried it).
      Should I ever need to flush mine again I think I'll try this - change oil, add new oil, drive it for a week or so, change oil, add new oil, drive it for a week or so, then change the oil again, only now also adding a new filter. It's suboptimal, but it seems to be the easiest way.

      I checked, the product details sheet. the list of approved specs's doesn't include the spec of VW G 052 162 A2 or G 055 162 A2 or ZF Lifeguardfluid 5) , it meets mainly to the USA / Asian / Japanese applications.
      www.penriteoil.com.au/products/atf-fs-full-syn
      there are many aftermarket fluids that do meet it (Valvoline, Eurol, BG, Febi bilstein, etc.).
      from vast experience with many 01M's in a dealer workshop, they fail if the fluid is not 100% compatible. i hope in this case i am wrong.
      the charechteristics of the fluid seems ok though - i hope the additive package is ok for the 01M.
      a straight Dexron 3 type would be more compatible like Kixx multivehicle ATF.
      www.kixxoil.com/product/productview?pdtCode=EN00332
      for example a Eurol ATF 1100 fully meets it
      eurol.com/en/products/eurol-atf-1100/
      or even STF by Eurol - which i used personally many times and a lot of garages use it for decades - no issues whatsoever.

    Better change the transmission fluid while it is still somewhat transparent, not as dirty as that, and use the same fluid to change the differential fluid, in case cross-contamination when seals go bad.

    • @AKAtheA
      @AKAtheA 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      if you use the ATF in the final drive, you'll destroy it. The final drive uses heavy gear oil (75W90), the ATF has a viscosity rating in single digits, it's not sufficient to provide the required lubrication. If you mix them, both the final drive and gearbox will suffer.
