My wife and I sat in the theater and watched this movie 4 times. It is one of the best sci-fi movies ever made. Mainly because of the cast and a great story.
I saw this movie on the big screen when it came out. I own this movie at home and have seen it many, many times. It is an intelligent Science Fiction movie.
Loved this movie as a kid. Braeden is at least 80 here and looks 20 years younger.

Great movie, I was also 8 in 1970.
I remember seeing this film when it came out. Still we persist with seeing how far we can develope A.I. This and many other similar films are warnings. Will scientists learn ?? I think not.
Now I know where the Cylons came from.

A.I. Frankenstein Monster Movie of 20th Century.
I believe they used the same voice effect for Colossus as the Cylons in the original Battlestar Galactica. Sounds close to me.
But I'm guessing.
I loved this movie as a kid and watched it every time it was on TV (which in the 70s was only about once a year!) Back then and even still today Braeden does not sound German to me at all. As a kid I think I thought he was French.
In the 70s all Germans talked like Nazis..
Why did they ask him to change his name?
It was thought he'd be typecast as a German soldier etc, if his name sounded to German.
It was 1970. Not a really long time since World War II. There were still a few hard feelings among some Americans. Besides, Hans Gudegast is rather difficult for Americans to remember or pronounce. Sometimes you just have to change your name to project the right image. Seriously, would you rather go to see a movie starring Michael Caine or "Maurice Micklewhite?" Ben Kingsley or "Krishna Pandit Bhanji?" Martin Sheen or "Ramón Antonio Gerardo Estévez?" Very ethnic names don't play very well in Middle America.
His name was Gudengast.
