In the long run I've had everything from wool felt to a 20x. I've worn a hat every day of my life in rain, snow, hot, cold, humid weather's. When your cowboying it's not gonna matter how many X's your hat is. Their all gonna get nasty and pretty much destroyed by the elements after using them. I've still got 4x Stetsons I bought in the 90s that have held up just as good a 20x. The only way your gonna keep your hat nice is leave it in the box and take it out to go dancing on a Friday night. Moral of this story is is you don't need a $700 20x hat that'll do the same thing as a good $100 4x. It ain't gonna matter how smooth and shiny it is stomped and covered in horse shit.
Facts, brother ! I currently own a Stetson 30x I use it for special nights, but my all day everyday use is straw hat Stetson Spartan, got so beat up , step on , folded , used to blow my fire 🔥 up when I was grilling . Got stained , sweat on . I had to get a replacement of my Stetson Spartan.
I’d like to pick that logic apart a 200 x in case let’s use the resistol for a example it cleans easier then their 6x or even 20x . Another thing is they slide the water off on a downpour. I understand it’s really cost vs quality but the truth is you can buy the cheaper one as long as you take care of it it’ll last you but those higher quality ones are easier to take care of and maintain. They can also be reshaped very easily and hold their shape! I’m saying this due to working on them and shaping a couple myself. Best example is twister vs rodeo king as well I’ll say they’re both inexpensive but rodeo king makes a better hat. Brand quality also has a lot to do with it twister hats are seasonal at best vs Stetson being my year around hat vs heat or cold. Many twisters begin peeling off that felt when wet vs my Stetson just beading the water off. At the end of the day if you where it for social gathering any hat will do as long as it doesn’t get wet but for a working hat specially for cowpunchers, cowboy, and or wranglers get a nice hat it’s worth just like buying a decent pair of boots!
The X value of a hat means absolutely nothing unless you have what it actually means from that specific hat manufacturer. 10X could be 100% beaver on some hats and hardly any at all on others. I have had 4x up to 200X and have some 100% beaver hat blanks to make some hats. I will say the 4X from early 90s was crap in terms of quality compared to the 20X or 200X hats that I own. All are Resistol that I own aside from an older Stetson 5X.
Beg to differ. Yes, the higher x's generally have a higher percentage of beaver fur, but the other component is not wool. It's fur felt. Usually European hare or rabbit fur felt.
Companies can make up X values, there is no standard, the “shininess” means nothing , other than how they finish it. You can make a low quality fur felt look like a higher x value, just by sanding it.
Any thing at and above 6x in like Resistol or Stetson etc well known reputable brands won’t have any wool . That’s one thing wrong about the video or mis spoke . It will be rabbit/hare fur but 100 percent fur felt unlike a 3x that will be wool. At 5x and 6x it’s more rabbit than beaver but has a little beaver the higher the x the more beaver to rabbit percentage
Just squeeze the top of the crown and you’ll know what quality is better . Resistol, Stetson, and Serratelli are my favorites . Especially my Serratelli!
I’ll put it this way there are two types of hats the ( work hat ) and the ( dress / special occasions hat ) and depending on what u want it for ..if u funna be using it all day beating it up I say don’t go past 50x unless u can afford it but if u funna be using it for memorable moments and special occasions than sure get u a more premium fine hat but at the end of the day it’s your hat and I say as long as u feeling your best that’s what matters and me wearing my boots and hats makes me feel like me ..makes me feel like my true self and honestly just gives me a lot of confidence 🤷🏽♂️😇
I recently bought a 50X custom hat from a well known maker, I was immediately unimpressed by the stiffness or the felt. The verdict is still out, as I haven’t worn it much yet, due to the heat. I’ll be wearing it more now, and we’ll see.
@@haggard1378 had to get it shaped a few times. I wore it one night and sweated in it pretty good. Left it in the truck overnight and it warped badly. Shaped back up pretty easily and no problems since. I wear it often and have worn it in the rain. I’m very satisfied with it.
@@karlkarlng the first night I wore it out, I sweated pretty hard in it. I left it in the truck overnight and the next day it had lost all shape and I couldn’t wear it without looking like a Beverly Hillbilly. I took it and got it shaped again and never leave it in the truck now. I just felt that the felt would be a bit better quality for a 50X custom made hat. I’ve got hats that are older and softer for sure, and I’ve got a 7X Resistol that’s much stiffer than the 50X. It seems to hold its shape better. I’m happy with the hat now and have worn it in the rain several times, sweated in it all day in Louisiana and Mississippi, and worn it in the cold snow and ice in Montana and Wyoming. It’s a good hat.
Any hat maker can put a bunch of x’s on a label or a tag. You the buyer, has to have a good eye and know what you buying. Plenty of knock offs and many off brands labeling hats 100x. Quick tip : flick the rim of the hat. Listen to the sound. You should notice cardboard on low quality hats.
Serious question.. How does any consumer spending a lot of money know exactly how much of any beaver fur is in a felt hat when there is no certification process? Don't tell me you can tell by looking at it or how shiny it is... how do we know all of this isn't coming from China made of dog fur and synthetics. I see hat manufacturers getting pretty liberal with their exes. I don't see any felt manufacturers standing up and showing us any transparency in the process.. there is no certification process where we are guaranteed we're getting what we pay for when it comes to the amount of waterproof Beaver felt. There is no reason not to believe that felt manufacturers like every other manufacturer in this country has cheapened out over the years and we're paying hundreds of extra dollars for wool and rabbit felt.
This guy does not know what he’s talking about. The “X” determines how much beaver felt mixed with rabbit fur. Not “wool”. Below 4x is wool not fur. And not ideal. 6x adds some beaver fur. The higher the x the more beaver fur in the mix. Again mixed with rabbit fur. Which is also very durable and preferable to wool (think Australian Akubra hats). Hats with pure beaver will say so and also will command high $$$. A 6x Stetson is ideal for price and durability. Largely rabbit fur with some (prob not a lot) of beaver blended in. 10x on up adds more beaver for a softer finish but then the price goes up. Above 6x you are dealing with dress hats and not working hats.
Been wearing both for over fifty years , not a lot of difference , they are owned by the same company ... FWIW my Resistols are every day "working" hats and my Stetsons are "dress" hats .. Both work well as either dress or work hats ..
@WONG SHEAN SHEANG Moe you get what you paid for, I sell hats from Hat-Co and Milano Hat Company, the former being the distributors of Stetson, Resistol, C1H, and Wrangler, and the ladder being distributors for Larry Mahan, Justin, Biltmore and Tony Lama. in my experience selling and feeling these hats on a daily basis I would say a Justin 3x and lower is an OK hat but you would rather invest in a 5x and above for a felt for these companies (being fur felt rather than wool felt). The same goes for any hat that is a Wool Felt, they are harder to take care of in the long run and might end up buying another one down the road. Again it all depends on how and what you are using the hat for. If you are just looking for a hat to go out on the town, then sure go for a lower quality hat, but long story short- Buy a Fur Felt Hat rather than a Wool Felt Hat.

Its the crown shape and brim shape. Usually they'll be accompanied ied by another two numbers, such as 7540...this would indicate a particular crown and brim shape (75) and length of the brim (40 = 4 inches). Then there will be another two numbers which denote color. O7 for example is black so you'd have 754007. Then there's another two numbers. For example 66. What those mean I havnt quite figured out but I believe it denotes the specific blend. So the full model number will be something ELPTN-75400766 meaning an el patron hat, profile 75, with a 4 inch brim, in color black, made with the "66" blend of fur which will equally roughly, 30X. Type in hatco public, or stetson catalogue on Google. You'll find hat co's website from which you can download stetsons catalogue which will detail what each of their profiles are.

Isnt the X system random? I mean it is not standardized. It depends on the MFR. Like Maple Syrup grades are not universal. Vermont has a grading system but it is not universal. No working person will wear a $700. hat for work. Because it will be ruined in short order. Like expensive work boots are kind of dumb. I wear steel toed Walmart Rubber boots to do barnwork. They last a year, cost $22. .You toss them and get another pair. You dont wear Muck boots that cost $125 and dont last much longer.
Yea kinda .. but if you are just wearing it here and there it’s fine .. also it depends how long ago you got it.. a 4x back in the day is like a 6x or 10x now..
Anyone know an online shop to buy a good quality reasonably priced hat in the UK? I’m beginning to wonder if it’d be better for me to order one from the US, that is if they can ship it over. Been searching and searching and I’ve probably sent about 7 emails to different companies but they are all quite useless... Just wanting a Homburg with the crown reshaped and steamed in a Gambler shape with the sides rolled up a little more for a less formal style. I’ve even had a response saying the crown isn’t interchangeable. Like that is what I meant. *sigh
We ship worldwide however sounds like you are wanting a custom hat from the crown shape and the brim.. maybe contact some custom hat makers here in the states and I’m sure they can send it to you

There's no unified standard for X rating on hats so any company can set the rating wherever they want. One companies 5X may have the same composition as another companie's 20X. It's totally arbitrary. 100x used to be pure beaver. Now there are companies labeling hats as 1000X. Pure BS.

The Resistol hat video said beaver is all hair. Wool hats don't have beaver, rabbit, or any kind of hair.
Beaver attracts more Beaver, therfore if X=p, then the product of X will = more D in The P.
Hahaha
What's the difference between Stetson 48 and 75 profile mean
thats the brim shape
@@jonjohnson63 my man, finally someone else that knows what they are talking about. Love it when people do actual research
@@lilsatan0 I do what research I can. Im a bit of a hat and boot nerd. I dont know as much as some hatters or bootkmakers/cobblers but I know what I know. I run Stetson Western Hat Enthusiasts on facebook as well, which is linked to a few other groups full of knowledgeable people.
@@jonjohnson63 awesome!!. I might make a FB account just to join up there. Im all about hats since they are my job and passion since 2010.
Is resistor better than Larry mahan?
Not sure.. I never had resistols sorry
Way better from my experience
Yes
Everyone loves more beaver.
6x beaver has rabbit, not wool. wool is in cheaper hats
I have a 100x is that good?
brand?
No way. Wool hats are their own category 2X 4X 6X whatever but all wool. Usually very stiff but decent hats for cold weather.
6X 7X are RABBIT fur made into felt and when you see cowboy hats $300 and down these are rabbit which does make a good hat and fine for urban cowboys bars dancing going out to eat
Beaver is WAY better in all categories and will protect from the elements look good and work ranching farming hunting and still look good at weddings restaurants 20X to 40X you will spend $350 to $750 and that’s a Beaver blend
100X is high % beaver maybe very high or all beaver $900 to $1500
After that you are looking at mink or chinchilla blended into the beaver silver buckles whatever but I don’t care about that
Recommend do your homework
Buy the best hat in your price range
Always buy in person at a reputable store
Shape or adjust if needed
Never get delivered through shipping/mail no way you GOTTA try on you CANNOT trust size accuracy
Not even top brands
Where to buy a stetson that can ship to around the world like me from indonesia...

I saw a XXX that had alot of beaver in it.
nice must be old school since now the 3x they only make it with wool
So pretty much everything.
yup
Isnt the X system random? I mean it is not standardized. It depends on the MFR. Like Maple Syrup grades are not universal. Vermont has a grading system but it is not universal. No working person will wear a $700. hat for work. Because it will be ruined in short order. Like expensive work boots are kind of dumb. I wear steel toed Walmart Rubber boots to do barnwork. They last a year, cost $22. .You toss them and get another pair. You dont wear Muck boots that cost $125 and dont last much longer.
So a 4x is a low end Stetson
Yes. Once you see and feel a 6x, youll tell the difference. Then it just gets better with the more x’s
Yea kinda .. but if you are just wearing it here and there it’s fine .. also it depends how long ago you got it.. a 4x back in the day is like a 6x or 10x now..
And the way it feels, the higher X feels way softer sheesh, how can you not know having them infront of you

*sigh
We ship worldwide however sounds like you are wanting a custom hat from the crown shape and the brim.. maybe contact some custom hat makers here in the states and I’m sure they can send it to you
@@westernshack Thanks for replying, I’ll see if I can find any on google then :)
nice beaver
The more Xs, the thinner the material. Yes, you can tell from a distance. More beaver, the better the hat. The better the hat, the more beaver you will get. More Xs more money.
Mo money mo beaver
I have a question. Why make a video of a topic you're clueless about?
Ha ha ha ha ha ha "... but the stiffer the more you gonna fall in love!"
You got some bad information. Beaver is not blended with wool. It is blended with Rabbit fur.
I've seen 1000x hats are these fake? Or legit
This person is a literal best buy employee... he doesn't know anything, has never seen a hat before, but he's gonna read the packaging description with all his heart.
Lmfao 🤣 this guy must not watch my other videos.. and also this guy took the time to write a negative comment! Lol Greg life must not be treating you good! But it’s okay it will get better. 🙌🙌

NICE!!
I like it
🙏🙏
Moral of the story...the more X’s the more child support money.
Hahahahaha
I've got a fever and the only prescription is more beaver
You have forsaken the cowbell.
The bottom line is you get what you pay for…
Exactly 👍👍
There's no unified standard for X rating on hats so any company can set the rating wherever they want. One companies 5X may have the same composition as another companie's 20X. It's totally arbitrary. 100x used to be pure beaver. Now there are companies labeling hats as 1000X. Pure BS.
Xxx more beaver than you can handle
I owned Stetson all my life last one was a 10x lasted more than 35 yrs finally retired it. Bought a 30x and it's a nice hat. My wife bought me a dang Ofarrell hat from Santa Fe for 1200 bucks and supposed to be 100% Beaver. It might be hell who knows other than I sent that hat back 3 times and it's still not right. I am doubtful it's a 100% Beaver.
Dont think dude graduated...
3x all wool 4x fur/wool blend for the most part. 5x and above is beaver and other animal fur mix. Think of the X as a percentage 6x 6% and so on. 6x stetson resistol and rodeo kings are gonna be about as much as someone wants to spend on a hat 20x and above you just look like a land baron some boss hog looking guy. Ya don't need a 20x hat
Im guessing you skipped class when they were teaching English? "Higher X's be a little bit more stiff....and higher X's your going to fall in love more!' So your saying the stiffer🥒 I am the more your going to fall in love😍💖 with me? Seems I have been told that before somewhere!🤣🤣😏😂😂 But heck, I thought it was a great video man!!
Hell yea skipped class lmfao I would ask the teacher “ will me learning about Columbus make me rich “ and they would just look at me crazy lol I’m so grateful I’m from the hood! And took the same hustler ambitions and put into yeehawcowboy.com 👍🏽😉😘
Sombrero not hat
Texana compa!not sombrero.. sombreros son echos de paja o palma
This guy needs to stick with boots he hasn’t got the slightest idea what he’s talking about
this guy watch the entire video then want to talk " S$It " lol.. man life must be hard Ill pray for you!!
This is one of the most inaccurate videos I’ve seen in awhile, not counting WH press briefings.
I just waste my time!
looks like you have time lmfao
