Mainly because Miami did just enough to get the job done. They were a 9 pt favorite and won by 8. Alabama gave them all they wanted but Miami was the better team. It was a pretty unimpressive game for a team with superior talent. Had Notre Dame lost to Miami in October rather than in the final game of November, then I could see this National Championship split. Notre Dame had a better resume. Miami had the head-to-head match-up and they also had a similar loss at Florida State.
@@CoreyT127 It was unbelievable. Plus, they had a pretty convincing win over #1 Colorado (21-6) compared to Miami beating the #7 team (33-25). I'm just surprised there wasn't a split championship that year. Miami had the win over Notre Dame at home, but after that, their only top-25 win was a road win at #14 Pitt. Notre Dame won at #2 Michigan, at home vs #9 USC, beat UVA in the Kickoff Classic (they were unranked but went on to win the ACC), the same Pitt team, and then at Penn State. Notre Dame played a killer schedule compared to Miami. Should have been a split.
@@tmarsh0307 if you remember correctly this BAMA team was ranked number #2 in the country all year until they lost the IRON BOWL to AUBURN, , so this BAMA team was a damn good team
@@insanemob8508 I don't disagree. However, if you look at their schedule, they barely escaped Vanderbilt (20-14), came from behind in the 4th to beat SW Louisiana (24-17) and needed a blocked FG to beat Penn State on the road (17-16). They were a great team, but overachieved in many ways. Their defense against the run was suspect and they turned the ball over quite a bit. I think they had 4 vs Penn State, 6 vs LSU and 4 vs Auburn. All of that finally caught up with them vs Auburn.
This Miami team was unique. This was likely their best defense until '01. The unique part about them is that Miami ran both the 4-3 over and 4-3 under fronts that year. Cortez Kennedy was so dominant that he demanded double teams. So Miami shifted him inside on occasion to collapse the strong side of the O-Line. In this game and the game against Notre Dame, he played in a one technique over the strong side guard. Combine that with Russell Maryland shooting gaps on the other side and running was a real chore against this team. The year prior, ND was able to run weak side ISO much of the game with success.
Amazing how much the kicking game has improved drastically since this game. 50 yard field goals are almost automatic now. And not many kickoffs stay in play
I was on my way to Jacksonville .Fl for my duty station so I never saw this game. But it looks like the only reason Alabama's was in the game was because of mistakes by the Hurricanes .but you see a few players that would come back and haunt us later
Too BAD Alabama couldn't win a National Championship until '92 during A.C. Slater, Samuel "Screech" Powers, Zack Morris, Kelly Kapowski, Jessie Spano, Lisa Turtle, Lynn Loud Sr., Steve Hale, Carlton Banks, Aladdin (Disney character), Kwame, Wheeler, Linka, Gi, and Ma-Ti, Todd Andrews, Rebecca "Becky" Conner, Mamoru Chiba aka Tuxedo Mask's 12th Grade Senior Year in High School.
Thanks for posting! Everyone remembers the 93 Sugar Bowl between these teams but no one ever talks about this one.

1:44 RIP Keith McCants
The U mystique still lives, even though they don’t win like they use to.💚🧡🙌
Wow I remember this game!

"A Southern-style Sugar Bowl" between Alabama and Miami (FL). Red sees Green.
Miami dominated the Tide in this game
