  • TheTopher's 2006 Toyota 4Runner just got fitted with some beefy Firestone Destination X/T all-terrain tires, so to break them in, we ran a fuel-economy test! There's definitely some extra rolling resistance with these tires as well as extra air resistance with the massive bumper on the front, but all things considered, this 240,000-mile 4Runner faired pretty well.

Thanks Charlie, Let's congratulate the original/earlier owners for taking such good care of this 4Runner . They chose wisely with a very high quality vehicle and they also had the sense to keep the options limited so there would be less to fix as the decades rolled by.

Put some Michelins highway tires (LTX MS2) on and reinstall the stock bumper. The MPG will increase to 19-20

This is the very reason I bought a Toyota Tundra. I get a 5.7L V8, a truck that can actually do things, and 18 mpg on the highway. In town it is 15 mpg.
4.7L V8 was a great motor for its time but the 5.7L V8 blew it away. It is a shame the 4.6L V8 was only ever available in the Lexus version, because the 4Runner's 4.0L V6 has always been underpowered.

Great real world test. The all terrain tires and the off road bumper affect mpg’s more than people might expect. Plus you maintained 72 the whole way. Mpg’s take a steep dive after about 65 so I guarantee you’d see a lot better mileage with a fully stock one going 65. Subscribed.

My '06 v8 sport gets around 17-19 highway depending on wind. I'm convinced it can be much higher if I get an alignment and maybe replace the wheel bearings.

Love my 08 v8 and that’s about what I get when on the Highway with 265/65r18 BFG k02s. Although the math teacher in me is a little sketched by rounding before your final calculation but I suppose 11 miles per tank isn’t that big of a deal.
I would love to see this same test done after you do some Doug Thorley headers.

keep in mind that when you run your car with the tank full, somehow you get better mpg compared when you do the same when drive on a half of tank, my advice is try to keep your tank always full and you will see the difference.

My experience with a 2001 Sequoia was that the computer always gave an inflated mpg figure. Maybe Toyota has improved the accuracy of the calculation.

My bone stock 2005 v8 one gets 18. I haven't had it long but I see alot of complaints on the MPG meter on these being way off. But mine likes yours was spot on.
Mine is mixed back roads and interstate at 70mph but I'd say 80% interstate. Not super flat either.

I’ve got the same 4Runner , 2007 2wd. Easy to get 19.2mpg on the highway

I have one of these, a Navy 2006 4Runner V-8 with 126,000 miles. No one believes me, but I get 21 mpg city and better on the highway. I have gotten as much as 28 mpg if I drive @60 mph at a steady speed.

I have one exactly like that with 284,000 miles and it doesn't hurt at all lol, I live in Texas and I'm looking for an ARB bumper like the one you have... would you be so kind as to give me the model number or serial number of the bumper... Thank you very much for your valuable information ..

How did speed do could you easily get to 80 or 90 without it killing the mpg?
