Great video btw. I think if you're basing it off of general use then definitely grief is significantly better. It can be applied to a lot more situations, performs at least just as well as LW in most instances, and is significantly cheaper. As a smiter though I prefer LW

I have heaven's light and its awesome, but i was running a hammerdin for a long time before trying a smiter or zealor, and by that time i already made my Grief and thankfully it rolled perfect. I enjoy good stat sticks, but now that i rolled a nearly perfect Phoenix in my monarch shield, the skill i needed most to work passively (redemption) when i kill anything procs so i can invest the skill points elsewhere. If i didnt have grief id consider using heaven's light
for hammer, teh goal is 1 hit k.o. else dont use it. basicly u can't 1 hit anything in hell with hammer so it is pretty much discard. however, it is still great in norm and nightmare.
The problem that I have is that by the time I get the 3 jah 1 ber 1 sur and toss it in a sword for a barb build I'm done with the game at this point and waiting for the next season. With grief I can have it made week one and use it for months to get all the runes i need till i hit that quitting time for the season.

Unfortunately because you can get both fade and lifetap from other sources Last wish is not really worth it, especially due to how expensive the runeword is. The massive amount of crushing blow is nice but there are have been extensive calculations and a grief setup with 50-60% CB will kill ubers faster than a 100% CB last wish setup on average, grief also does way more damage on regular mobs where crushing blow is not nearly as important. Last wish is good for convenience though if you just want to do ubers on a character that normally does regular MF like a hammerdin or something, you just swap out 1 piece of gear and you're good to go.... But 5 high runes just to make things slightly more convenient is not really something i can recommend xD.
I understand why so many have said LW is not worth making because its cost could be better suited making other runewords that would be more helpful for most players/builds. I agree its cost to benefit is a deterrent for most people and originally i questioned if it would be worth it. However, the focus was to discuss an old topic of which is better for many reasons, that's why i broke it down like i did, to be as fair and equal between the two but be critical where it matters. I use my LW on my barb so he doesnt need dracs for life tap, LW helps me have a better overall build atm until im able to make other runewords in other bases that would focus solely on high damage output so Life Tap wouldn't be needed. But again i see where the valid argument is for making LW and appreciate the feedback. If i hadnt made LW before, id find different options to use the HR in.
all the people saying greif is better simply just haven't used a lastwish, its like comparing a stick vs a sword, yeah stick must better cause its cheap but the sword will own you all day long, treachy is crap, and dracs doesn't go off very much , sometimes it does but lastwish life tap is going off all the time, when fade kicks in u will never die, greif and lastwish combo is good with a frenzy
Strange in the "builds" section that you didn't list Smiter for Last Wish, but mentioned it as an option in the commentary. I luckily made a 375/70 LW on one of my ladder playthroughs (though it was in a 15% PB, so it actually rolled 360/70). I preferred it over my grief just for convenience. *You go a bit slower,* but proc LT twice as often and can permanently keep up Fade without switching. My luck was so bad with LT procs that it sometimes led to me dying. I considered Exile, but hated losing the skills+resist on Um'd HoZ. I used upped Guardian Angel which, coupled with HoZ and other items, gave me 90/90/95/90 resists even in uber Meph Conviction Aura. I still have a single screenshot left, before I dropped everything for my friends to fight over. That said, unless you're as micro-lazy as I am (and/or play so much that you have mules just for HR's) I would not recommend LW in general... but it does the job for lazy left-click heroes.
Im guessing i didnt consider a smiter for LW because i never really play it, as well as when ive seen people try it against Ubers, if they didnt have good damage, the play of it was really slow. So i more focused on builds that would more benefit from the runewords instead of exploring every build option that could use it to some degree. Granted a smiter would have things proc much more giving them much more survivability, but overall the effectiveness compared to other builds, in my opinion, wouldnt be as good as just using grief and rejuvs as needed.

I love my grief however i have found more uses for my LW lately than grief, but using both on my frenzy barb is the best of both worlds! I personally like the Last wish best... It's alot more expensive, yes - but I like auras and I like tanky builds, so the fade and life tap procs are very welcome :D and it gives me wiggleroom with my other items with just how many usefull stats it has... The lack of AS is definitely hurting last wish though, but I just checked my breakpoints and as long as I've got 20% IAS on gloves, I'll only be cutting off 1 frame per cast of zeal untill I break 72% IAS, which is alot of moving things around for me - including having to find another way to cap my resistances... (aka small charms for days prolly) I can't deny that Grief definitely is strong though, prolly OP even and for the price compared to last wish, it's not even funny how strong grief is...
I feel the same about my last wish, and yes i LOVE the grief i have, its been such an amazing weapon that yes costs a Lo, but for what it gives back with the IAS and added damage, along with the other beneficial stats, its an amazing weapon to have. BUT ive actually ended up using my Last Wish much more than my grief, and its been such an important piece to some of my more complicated projects, such as the one coming out tomorrow morning where i have an Act 5 Merc Solo all of Ubers (minis and Tristram), and Last Wish was crucial to making it happen, and unfortunately Grief wasnt as beneficial as i wished it couldve been as Kingslayer was the other weapon used. Both runewords are great for the respective uses, and yes ill never disagree that Last Wish is much too expensive, but to have fade, life tap, might aura(better than nothing), and huge CB potential be in one item vs using several pieces for the same, or less, effort to free up the remainder of the gear, Last Wish has been well worth it to me.
If you have the means to do so, go for it! However, compared to concentration or fanaticism, might isnt as helpful and LW is better suited for it's survivability compared to adding damage. Granted it's CB can be amazing, however when it's diminishing return really takes affect, Grief's damage will be the one of these two runewords to really shine and finish off anything you're fighting. I love my LW, still use it to this day, but the might aura alone isnt enough to get me to use it for the damage.
If i get asked which is better , i gonna say , : yes The difference for me will Always BE, that i wont BE able to get last Wish .... I'll struggle to get a grief but its within reach ...
That's one of the best answers, especially because both have the builds they are best suited for, and neither can fulfill the needs of every characters build. It took me FOREVER to get last wish and having grief before, i wanted it on my frenzy barb, and now he has the support mods from LW and the damage from Grief and wrecks everything.
Last Wish is not worth it for the runes required for it. It doesnt even have the 'Ignore Target Defense' bonus in it and/or any IAS bonus. Fade proc, Charge Bolt proc, Hit Blinds Target and Prevent Monster Heal for 3 Jah's are very laughable and just not worth it. Breath of the Dying runeword which only use 1 high-level rune: Zod, even beats this Last Wish in terms of effective use of rare high-level runes for runewords.
If i was writing this at the time of recording this video, id be more inclined to agree with most ot your points. However, since making this video, ive actually found more use for Last Wish than Grief, from finishing running Uber Tristram 1000 times for a mass torch ID, or even finishing the editing today of getting the act 5 merc to Solo the Entire Uber process (killing the minis and main ubers completely on his own as far as damage), and neither wouldve worked without Last Wish. Grief definitely is more versatile with different builds, but because i do quite a bit of Uber content, Last Wish has been amazing to use and having so many benefits, offensively and defensively, on one item vs using several pieces that especially a merc cant use, makes it such a powerful weapon that I ve personally found more use for. But as far as obtaining it and using it, Grief wins hands down.
Frenzy Uses Both, One in each hand, slower weapon goes in the primary hand. (Speed Glitch, You'll Pickup the Slower weapon which is on Glove Side, and put it back in place, messes up speed calculations).

Possibly even big non main starts (Druid,necro) kinda sin I started way back in the day. Close to when expansion first came out. And started again d2r drop and now ladder as well. Things that always grabs my attention are mf stuff and early ladder “OP” or “BIG MF” Take all this with a grain of salt and know that it’s coming from a newbie. There's nothing wrong with that! I love my LW and as i stated, for survivability and using crushing blow, it's incredibly helpful at the beginnings of all my fights, then my grief comes in toward the end to kill off everyone with its high base damage. They both are great in their own rights and I never play my barb without my LW aside when i killed Ubers with Wirt's leg...that was difficult

Also you stretch the game the video footage in the background. Never stretch any footage. It always looks horrible. Even black borders are better.

Im sorry but there is nothing subjective about this topic. Grief is hands down the best melee weapon and not only that it is so freaking cheap to make. Last Wish has some cool stats in it but if you want to kill something fast grief wins. Crushing blow comes from other pieces (boots, head piece) so you are not starved for it. Even with 20% CB the attackspeed gives you enough procs and going over 100% is a total waste of a stat. Plus lets not forget LastWish is almost 2 and a half enigmas which is stupid expensive for what you are getting in return. Interesting video but i have to say its a mute topic, better video idea is for example which weapons to use as melee. Good luck!
I covered extensively my thoughts, and broke down the advantages/disadvantages, of which would make the better melee weapon, as well as where each weapon thrives in certain situations. Im sorry you didnt enjoy the topic for what i tried to present it as, but being as this is something i had seen people debate on, as well as something ive had experience for both endgame runewords, i wanted to give my insight and help show not only which i felt is more beneficial overall, but where/how they could be used to make them more fun.
@@DSG411 don't get me wrong i enjoy these kinds of videos and dont give up. Im a frenzy main and the sad reality is that if you want to be melee you have to go grief. I think there can be interesting debate over offhand weapon for example.
@@GeoDim4evv that was what a lot of my comparison was when it came to LW. How its more for survivability and can help with players that have their merc be more of the damage dealer and add Might aura and Fade, it's a valuable asset for players in situations like that. But when it comes to damage side by side, absolutely Grief dominates and that's why i compared adding specific base damage number vs percentage of enhanced damage.
Not necessarily. There’s plenty of items that are cheaper than their expensive alternatives. It just depends on what specifically you want to use the items for that can determine which is “better” for certain situations.

It depends on your build and survivability! Just using these two runewords, if you are struggling with survivability, id say a grief/LW combo would help so you can do decent damage and still have life tap for your health. But if you dont feel worried about dying, definitely a dual grief(2 griefs) would be ideal.
IF they'd a put ZOD and some good IAS in the Last Wish we could see some Last Wish Berserker Axes used for WW barbs, etc... there's really only one build to use a Last Wish on -Auradin... And I don't think its gonna be much better than a HoJ (maxed Holy Fire/synergies) + Dragon as I'm using... Its just crazy expensive and not really that good except for killing a boss. PVM... which isnt what I want at all... I like pvp.
I use mine on my frenzy barb, pairing it with grief has made me damn near impossible to kill. I agree its incredibly expensive for quite a stat stick with only a handful being most helpful. The might aura and life tap proc really do help me a lot, and the crushing blow helps me with the health at the beginning, and grief finishes them off toward the end. I dont play PVP, only SP offline with Plugy but i wish i could try it!
from what i gather, for smiters specifically, the +base attack on grief outweighs the benefit of lvl17 might aura from LW, but i don't actually know how it works or how the numbers stack up. i'd be interested to see if you can calculate exactly how much smite dmg that works out to be. anyone know?
Exactly, that's what i mentioned as well as why adding/ enhancing damage by a big number is better than a big percentage, as why 200% ED for damage of 10 means much less than adding +200 damage to a base. I could make a community post showing what the smite damage difference would be between Grief and Last Wish if you want. As far as the damage calculations, i dont have the answers to that part unfortunately
I havent played a dual dream tesladin yet, however i looked up what people did prefer on it, and it came down to two factors: If you want higher damage: Grief If you arent sure about survivability: LW But it also depends on the rest of your gear. However if you have a source of life tap on the rest of your gear, id go with Grief.
hello ! i like only to make duels. So i use pure charge with fanaticism. (when i face bonecros and hammers or amazons with full block i use charge, fanaticism + smite) - for me i got a perfect grief 40% IAS + 400 damage + 15 life after each kill + ( - 25 to enemy poison resist) + 3 to AR + 15 Enhanced damage on a superior phase blade). I kill everyone in duels - but i need to know if LAST WISH is better than my grief. LW (the life tap and thorn aura) gives more damage than grief ???
Last Wish and Grief both have their strengths and weaknesses. In the beginning of a fight, the high CB makes LW quite powerful, and that's without taking into consideration the life tap proc, fade proc, and might aura. However, CB has a diminishing return and eventually, and quite quickly, starts losing effectiveness. Grief does add a lot of damage, and in comparison, its damage is better seen halfway through toward the end of a fight when you really see the added damage really shines to knock out the last bit of health a monster/enemy has. I have ended up using LW more than Grief, however Grief is more useful overall. However, LW is both a good stat stick for offensive and defensive use. I love my LW and use it on several builds. If you can make it and want it, i say go for it.
Last Wish duh, it cost more so it must be better, LOL totally don't know... I made a Dream/Dream/HoJ/Dragon Auradin and its my favorite build so far... So now I'm eyeballing the Last Wish which costs like 2.5 Enigmas lol!!! insane cost! I'd like to just have it to show off lol!!!
Haha if only that were the case for all runewords: higher cost immediately makes it OP over all other runewords. I LOVE my last wish, it's such a helpful weapon for my barbarian, especially farming the Ubers like i did. If you can afford it and want a great survivability/support runeword, its worth making.
I saw that video too where he beat the Ubers speedrun world record, it was awesome. But that's for killing ubers, but between these two specifically for all endgame use, the debate continues, as the comment section is very divided between the two. But that's part of the fun at the end of the day.
@@DSG411 yeah, but if you think about it - if you only care about IAS, and CB, and the bonus damage from grief is negligible, it makes sense. I went to a 6os PB BerBerUmUmShaelShael on my kicksin - needs 15% off weapon ias to hit 3/7 kick speed (is 3/8 otherwise), 100% cb with goblin toe/g-face, and 50% OW with trang gloves (75% with dracs).
@@jakubfabisiak9810 with your build, neither runeword gives you the benefit you would need to maximize your damage/survivability. And thats awesome you found your setup that works well for you. Just for context, im aware of more beneficial choices for certain builds, and yes 4Ber with 2Shael is godly and most melee builds brings them up to ridiculous opportunities for kill speed/damage. And even for assassins, rare items can actually be much more beneficial than runewords, especially for a ghost sin, and while all runewords can be obtained, some easier than others, those particular items needing to roll with very specific mods can be close to impossible for everyone to find, very few will ever find them. However in this video, i only wanted to focus on which runeword would be "best" between the two and to breakdown why. Sure a 4Ber with 2Shael could be better, but comparatively speaking to a Grief, most would make Grief instead because of how much cheaper it is to make while 4Bers could be better used for other endgame runewords for the majority of players. Ive debated continuing this topic and comparing other runewords, but i did this one because it seemed to be the most debated of the 4 major endgame ones: Death, BotD, Grief, and Last Wish. I still may continue it, but id want to have the runewords and use them before just debating them.
@@DSG411 well the kicksin, and the smiter have the luxury of not caring about weapon damage - just IAS, and CB. On a different note - I like BotD on my pitzerker, because with LoH you already overkill demons, so the higher average damage on grief doesn't make a difference, but +stats, and %damage to undead on BotD does.
@@mda7763 i was more so explaining the most beneficial builds its used on. I personally dont play WW barb much because of how nerfed it is compared to vanilla release, but there's countless builds it could be used with, especially for Might Aura and Life Tap proc. But mainly the builds i had mentioned are where Last Wish really shines.
Made worse? Not to my knowledge. I know new runewords are being introduced to the game but i havent heard anything about nerfing already existing ones. Where did you possibly hear that it's worse from?
I was told Grief has been "nerfed" but I'm not sure when there's been a lot of changes of the last 20 year's. It sounds like you would know if it something i should be worried about.
@@KH-iz1bj honestly i wouldn't worry about it. If they were to change up pre-existing runewords, especially one as used and loved as Grief, i am sure the news of it would be more than a rumor and spoken upon very openly. You should be safe for using Grief without worry for it being nerfed!
its so sad that LASt wish is uber expensive and is crappier than a Grief. sad sad sad.... only reason why i say this is because Great Bow Faith merc is entirely useless in battles.. if she dies.. ur lastwish guy doesnt have fanaticism that is required for the decent IAS...
I agree, LW is incredibly expensive especially since its more of a support runeword compared to it being viable for killing things fast. Even Beast can usually be better in slot for a lot of the uses LW would offer, however that Life Tap proc is life saver, pun intended. And the Might Aura at least adds something beneficial to the merc, and for my frenzy barb, last wish is essential to making the rest of the build have more options for gear and killing ubers without much thought. I love my LW.
Well have to be honest...hate grief looks cheap and plastic so decided to do beast/lw barb and well it was trash. Just to mention the dmg from bers axe and pb is like none comparable with ba lw 389% ed that rolled bottom is 150 which is the top of pb. It is the worst was hearth broken but then put it on bladesin its unreal 10000% fun lw is amazing for blade fury you dont care as or durability just smashed all there is and there is still 20 lvl traps if you need

I love my last wish, ive used it far more than I've used Grief, but they both have their uses and if utilized well, can be huge game changers for certain builds.

Of the two runewords, grief and last wish, ive found myself finding last wish much more useful for so many of my builds, it even is a huge reason i got an act 5 mercenary to solo ubers. Yes its expensive but it comes with nearly everything you want in a weapon, minus IAS and the flat damage Grief has, but overall i use Last Wish much more than Grief.
I didnt say thats the only reason, i was giving an example of something Ive used it for that most wouldnt consider. Grief's flat damage and IAS is great, but overall as a stat stick that actually can add significant damage, Last Wish is my go-to in many circumstances. The runes more than pay for themselves in time.

@@oscargn14 i do remember the comment! A super GG roll is hard to forget! But what im curious about is how did you roll grief with 415 damage when it's limited to 400 as a max roll? I know Phase Blades and even Berserker Axes can have enhanced damage, but that isnt added into the "+340-400 damage" mod for the runeword. How did it roll 415?

I believe that Astreon's Iron Ward is even better than Grief, but then I need +4 skill and max dmg on the roll

Fury Druid would also benefit from Grief and Last Wish is great for a KickSin.

Last wish is good for convenience though if you just want to do ubers on a character that normally does regular MF like a hammerdin or something, you just swap out 1 piece of gear and you're good to go.... But 5 high runes just to make things slightly more convenient is not really something i can recommend xD.
I understand why so many have said LW is not worth making because its cost could be better suited making other runewords that would be more helpful for most players/builds. I agree its cost to benefit is a deterrent for most people and originally i questioned if it would be worth it.
However, the focus was to discuss an old topic of which is better for many reasons, that's why i broke it down like i did, to be as fair and equal between the two but be critical where it matters.
I use my LW on my barb so he doesnt need dracs for life tap, LW helps me have a better overall build atm until im able to make other runewords in other bases that would focus solely on high damage output so Life Tap wouldn't be needed.
But again i see where the valid argument is for making LW and appreciate the feedback. If i hadnt made LW before, id find different options to use the HR in.
all the people saying greif is better simply just haven't used a lastwish, its like comparing a stick vs a sword, yeah stick must better cause its cheap but the sword will own you all day long, treachy is crap, and dracs doesn't go off very much , sometimes it does but lastwish life tap is going off all the time, when fade kicks in u will never die, greif and lastwish combo is good with a frenzy
Strange in the "builds" section that you didn't list Smiter for Last Wish, but mentioned it as an option in the commentary. I luckily made a 375/70 LW on one of my ladder playthroughs (though it was in a 15% PB, so it actually rolled 360/70). I preferred it over my grief just for convenience. *You go a bit slower,* but proc LT twice as often and can permanently keep up Fade without switching. My luck was so bad with LT procs that it sometimes led to me dying. I considered Exile, but hated losing the skills+resist on Um'd HoZ. I used upped Guardian Angel which, coupled with HoZ and other items, gave me 90/90/95/90 resists even in uber Meph Conviction Aura. I still have a single screenshot left, before I dropped everything for my friends to fight over.
That said, unless you're as micro-lazy as I am (and/or play so much that you have mules just for HR's) I would not recommend LW in general... but it does the job for lazy left-click heroes.
Im guessing i didnt consider a smiter for LW because i never really play it, as well as when ive seen people try it against Ubers, if they didnt have good damage, the play of it was really slow. So i more focused on builds that would more benefit from the runewords instead of exploring every build option that could use it to some degree. Granted a smiter would have things proc much more giving them much more survivability, but overall the effectiveness compared to other builds, in my opinion, wouldnt be as good as just using grief and rejuvs as needed.

I personally like the Last wish best... It's alot more expensive, yes - but I like auras and I like tanky builds, so the fade and life tap procs are very welcome :D and it gives me wiggleroom with my other items with just how many usefull stats it has... The lack of AS is definitely hurting last wish though, but I just checked my breakpoints and as long as I've got 20% IAS on gloves, I'll only be cutting off 1 frame per cast of zeal untill I break 72% IAS, which is alot of moving things around for me - including having to find another way to cap my resistances... (aka small charms for days prolly)
I can't deny that Grief definitely is strong though, prolly OP even and for the price compared to last wish, it's not even funny how strong grief is...
I feel the same about my last wish, and yes i LOVE the grief i have, its been such an amazing weapon that yes costs a Lo, but for what it gives back with the IAS and added damage, along with the other beneficial stats, its an amazing weapon to have.
BUT ive actually ended up using my Last Wish much more than my grief, and its been such an important piece to some of my more complicated projects, such as the one coming out tomorrow morning where i have an Act 5 Merc Solo all of Ubers (minis and Tristram), and Last Wish was crucial to making it happen, and unfortunately Grief wasnt as beneficial as i wished it couldve been as Kingslayer was the other weapon used.
Both runewords are great for the respective uses, and yes ill never disagree that Last Wish is much too expensive, but to have fade, life tap, might aura(better than nothing), and huge CB potential be in one item vs using several pieces for the same, or less, effort to free up the remainder of the gear, Last Wish has been well worth it to me.
Hmm, how about dual Last wish on you and act5 merc at the same time? So we can have 4 might aura stacking.
If you have the means to do so, go for it! However, compared to concentration or fanaticism, might isnt as helpful and LW is better suited for it's survivability compared to adding damage. Granted it's CB can be amazing, however when it's diminishing return really takes affect, Grief's damage will be the one of these two runewords to really shine and finish off anything you're fighting. I love my LW, still use it to this day, but the might aura alone isnt enough to get me to use it for the damage.

That's one of the best answers, especially because both have the builds they are best suited for, and neither can fulfill the needs of every characters build.
It took me FOREVER to get last wish and having grief before, i wanted it on my frenzy barb, and now he has the support mods from LW and the damage from Grief and wrecks everything.
I thought grief + exile was great. then I switched to last wish + phoenix. fade + life tap + CB +DS + better dmg.
Last Wish is not worth it for the runes required for it.
It doesnt even have the 'Ignore Target Defense' bonus in it and/or any IAS bonus.
Fade proc, Charge Bolt proc, Hit Blinds Target and Prevent Monster Heal for 3 Jah's are very laughable and just not worth it.
Breath of the Dying runeword which only use 1 high-level rune: Zod, even beats this Last Wish in terms of effective use of rare high-level runes for runewords.
If i was writing this at the time of recording this video, id be more inclined to agree with most ot your points.
However, since making this video, ive actually found more use for Last Wish than Grief, from finishing running Uber Tristram 1000 times for a mass torch ID, or even finishing the editing today of getting the act 5 merc to Solo the Entire Uber process (killing the minis and main ubers completely on his own as far as damage), and neither wouldve worked without Last Wish.
Grief definitely is more versatile with different builds, but because i do quite a bit of Uber content, Last Wish has been amazing to use and having so many benefits, offensively and defensively, on one item vs using several pieces that especially a merc cant use, makes it such a powerful weapon that I ve personally found more use for.
But as far as obtaining it and using it, Grief wins hands down.
Frenzy Uses Both, One in each hand, slower weapon goes in the primary hand. (Speed Glitch, You'll Pickup the Slower weapon which is on Glove Side, and put it back in place, messes up speed calculations).
I use both on my Frenzy barb, opens up the rest of the build and it's very difficult for him to die.

There's nothing wrong with that! I love my LW and as i stated, for survivability and using crushing blow, it's incredibly helpful at the beginnings of all my fights, then my grief comes in toward the end to kill off everyone with its high base damage. They both are great in their own rights and I never play my barb without my LW aside when i killed Ubers with Wirt's leg...that was difficult

For the extended intro before the content, Ive made sure to mention either in the first 5 seconds of the video before it actually starts, or by me actually saying it directly in the intro, that there are Timestamps in the description (generally right at the top to not have to make anyone scroll to find them) so those that want to skip to a specific segment of the video can watch it without feeling forced into watching something they otherwise dont want to watch, that option is always available in all of my videos, even from years ago such as when i made this video, up to my most recent content.
The video stretching was something i did (not a lot as i learned fast not to) from making skateboarding videos and having to get rid of some of the edges that show the inside of a fisheye, so i would expand the videos in a 1:1 ratio until the excessive fish eye was gone. If you decide to check out my recent content in D2R youll see that issue doesnt occur at all, as my recorded game clips fit the entire screen compared to when i played in Plugy.

Im sorry but there is nothing subjective about this topic. Grief is hands down the best melee weapon and not only that it is so freaking cheap to make. Last Wish has some cool stats in it but if you want to kill something fast grief wins. Crushing blow comes from other pieces (boots, head piece) so you are not starved for it. Even with 20% CB the attackspeed gives you enough procs and going over 100% is a total waste of a stat. Plus lets not forget LastWish is almost 2 and a half enigmas which is stupid expensive for what you are getting in return. Interesting video but i have to say its a mute topic, better video idea is for example which weapons to use as melee. Good luck!

@@DSG411 don't get me wrong i enjoy these kinds of videos and dont give up. Im a frenzy main and the sad reality is that if you want to be melee you have to go grief. I think there can be interesting debate over offhand weapon for example.

How its more for survivability and can help with players that have their merc be more of the damage dealer and add Might aura and Fade, it's a valuable asset for players in situations like that. But when it comes to damage side by side, absolutely Grief dominates and that's why i compared adding specific base damage number vs percentage of enhanced damage.

Not necessarily. There’s plenty of items that are cheaper than their expensive alternatives. It just depends on what specifically you want to use the items for that can determine which is “better” for certain situations.

It depends on your build and survivability!
Just using these two runewords, if you are struggling with survivability, id say a grief/LW combo would help so you can do decent damage and still have life tap for your health. But if you dont feel worried about dying, definitely a dual grief(2 griefs) would be ideal.

IF they'd a put ZOD and some good IAS in the Last Wish we could see some Last Wish Berserker Axes used for WW barbs, etc... there's really only one build to use a Last Wish on -Auradin... And I don't think its gonna be much better than a HoJ (maxed Holy Fire/synergies) + Dragon as I'm using... Its just crazy expensive and not really that good except for killing a boss. PVM... which isnt what I want at all... I like pvp.
I use mine on my frenzy barb, pairing it with grief has made me damn near impossible to kill. I agree its incredibly expensive for quite a stat stick with only a handful being most helpful. The might aura and life tap proc really do help me a lot, and the crushing blow helps me with the health at the beginning, and grief finishes them off toward the end.
I dont play PVP, only SP offline with Plugy but i wish i could try it!

from what i gather, for smiters specifically, the +base attack on grief outweighs the benefit of lvl17 might aura from LW, but i don't actually know how it works or how the numbers stack up. i'd be interested to see if you can calculate exactly how much smite dmg that works out to be. anyone know?
Exactly, that's what i mentioned as well as why adding/ enhancing damage by a big number is better than a big percentage, as why 200% ED for damage of 10 means much less than adding +200 damage to a base.
I could make a community post showing what the smite damage difference would be between Grief and Last Wish if you want. As far as the damage calculations, i dont have the answers to that part unfortunately

I havent played a dual dream tesladin yet, however i looked up what people did prefer on it, and it came down to two factors:
If you want higher damage: Grief
If you arent sure about survivability: LW
But it also depends on the rest of your gear. However if you have a source of life tap on the rest of your gear, id go with Grief.
hello ! i like only to make duels. So i use pure charge with fanaticism. (when i face bonecros and hammers or amazons with full block i use charge, fanaticism + smite) - for me i got a perfect grief 40% IAS + 400 damage + 15 life after each kill + ( - 25 to enemy poison resist) + 3 to AR + 15 Enhanced damage on a superior phase blade). I kill everyone in duels - but i need to know if LAST WISH is better than my grief. LW (the life tap and thorn aura) gives more damage than grief ???
Last Wish and Grief both have their strengths and weaknesses. In the beginning of a fight, the high CB makes LW quite powerful, and that's without taking into consideration the life tap proc, fade proc, and might aura. However, CB has a diminishing return and eventually, and quite quickly, starts losing effectiveness. Grief does add a lot of damage, and in comparison, its damage is better seen halfway through toward the end of a fight when you really see the added damage really shines to knock out the last bit of health a monster/enemy has.
I have ended up using LW more than Grief, however Grief is more useful overall. However, LW is both a good stat stick for offensive and defensive use. I love my LW and use it on several builds. If you can make it and want it, i say go for it.

Last Wish duh, it cost more so it must be better, LOL totally don't know... I made a Dream/Dream/HoJ/Dragon Auradin and its my favorite build so far... So now I'm eyeballing the Last Wish which costs like 2.5 Enigmas lol!!! insane cost! I'd like to just have it to show off lol!!!
Haha if only that were the case for all runewords: higher cost immediately makes it OP over all other runewords. I LOVE my last wish, it's such a helpful weapon for my barbarian, especially farming the Ubers like i did. If you can afford it and want a great survivability/support runeword, its worth making.
Cooley settled this, and the answer is 6os PB with 4xBER, and 2xSHAEL
I saw that video too where he beat the Ubers speedrun world record, it was awesome.
But that's for killing ubers, but between these two specifically for all endgame use, the debate continues, as the comment section is very divided between the two. But that's part of the fun at the end of the day.
@@DSG411 yeah, but if you think about it - if you only care about IAS, and CB, and the bonus damage from grief is negligible, it makes sense.
I went to a 6os PB BerBerUmUmShaelShael on my kicksin - needs 15% off weapon ias to hit 3/7 kick speed (is 3/8 otherwise), 100% cb with goblin toe/g-face, and 50% OW with trang gloves (75% with dracs).
@@jakubfabisiak9810 with your build, neither runeword gives you the benefit you would need to maximize your damage/survivability. And thats awesome you found your setup that works well for you.
Just for context, im aware of more beneficial choices for certain builds, and yes 4Ber with 2Shael is godly and most melee builds brings them up to ridiculous opportunities for kill speed/damage.
And even for assassins, rare items can actually be much more beneficial than runewords, especially for a ghost sin, and while all runewords can be obtained, some easier than others, those particular items needing to roll with very specific mods can be close to impossible for everyone to find, very few will ever find them.
However in this video, i only wanted to focus on which runeword would be "best" between the two and to breakdown why. Sure a 4Ber with 2Shael could be better, but comparatively speaking to a Grief, most would make Grief instead because of how much cheaper it is to make while 4Bers could be better used for other endgame runewords for the majority of players.
Ive debated continuing this topic and comparing other runewords, but i did this one because it seemed to be the most debated of the 4 major endgame ones: Death, BotD, Grief, and Last Wish.
I still may continue it, but id want to have the runewords and use them before just debating them.
@@DSG411 well the kicksin, and the smiter have the luxury of not caring about weapon damage - just IAS, and CB.
On a different note - I like BotD on my pitzerker, because with LoH you already overkill demons, so the higher average damage on grief doesn't make a difference, but +stats, and %damage to undead on BotD does.

I personally dont play WW barb much because of how nerfed it is compared to vanilla release, but there's countless builds it could be used with, especially for Might Aura and Life Tap proc. But mainly the builds i had mentioned are where Last Wish really shines.
Always LW. Unless or a skelemancer then LW in merc and beast on you.
Skellymancer want to use Pride for Merc with Might Aura, not LW tho. Some richer guys use other merc auras and feed LW to Iron Golem.

I was told Grief has been "nerfed" but I'm not sure when there's been a lot of changes of the last 20 year's. It sounds like you would know if it something i should be worried about.
@@KH-iz1bj honestly i wouldn't worry about it. If they were to change up pre-existing runewords, especially one as used and loved as Grief, i am sure the news of it would be more than a rumor and spoken upon very openly. You should be safe for using Grief without worry for it being nerfed!

I agree, LW is incredibly expensive especially since its more of a support runeword compared to it being viable for killing things fast. Even Beast can usually be better in slot for a lot of the uses LW would offer, however that Life Tap proc is life saver, pun intended. And the Might Aura at least adds something beneficial to the merc, and for my frenzy barb, last wish is essential to making the rest of the build have more options for gear and killing ubers without much thought. I love my LW.
surprisingly i have a 390/68cb last wish. and a 40/400 8ed/2ar GRIEF... and i would pick my grief any day. im a Tesladin.
Well have to be honest...hate grief looks cheap and plastic so decided to do beast/lw barb and well it was trash. Just to mention the dmg from bers axe and pb is like none comparable with ba lw 389% ed that rolled bottom is 150 which is the top of pb. It is the worst was hearth broken but then put it on bladesin its unreal 10000% fun lw is amazing for blade fury you dont care as or durability just smashed all there is and there is still 20 lvl traps if you need

Of the two runewords, grief and last wish, ive found myself finding last wish much more useful for so many of my builds, it even is a huge reason i got an act 5 mercenary to solo ubers. Yes its expensive but it comes with nearly everything you want in a weapon, minus IAS and the flat damage Grief has, but overall i use Last Wish much more than Grief.

I didnt say thats the only reason, i was giving an example of something Ive used it for that most wouldnt consider. Grief's flat damage and IAS is great, but overall as a stat stick that actually can add significant damage, Last Wish is my go-to in many circumstances. The runes more than pay for themselves in time.

@@oscargn14 i do remember the comment! A super GG roll is hard to forget! But what im curious about is how did you roll grief with 415 damage when it's limited to 400 as a max roll? I know Phase Blades and even Berserker Axes can have enhanced damage, but that isnt added into the "+340-400 damage" mod for the runeword. How did it roll 415?
