For a complex scene like the second picture, I'll just separate the subject on another layer and warp it to my heart's content. Much preferable to curved door frames IMO.
I use a similar but also simple technique that is better than this one in the second picture. I just duplicate the layer that I'm warping then I erase everything that I don't want to be warped. it's so much easier and better than this technique.
@@zerorusher The auto subject selection isn't precise enough for professional use unless the background is a solid color or is completely blurred. It's a nice way to start a mask but you pretty much always have to tweak for real precise results. It's a great tool though.
@@njsfer that's why I'd duplicate the layer and use masking. If needed l'd tweak the mask manually... Probably faster than making the whole masking by hand...
That's great for people who want to futz with photos. For packaging designers, the *old* warp could be used to accurately manipulate flat artwork across three dimensional surfaces. It's practically useless now.
It's a cool update... I used to crop and warp the areas I wanted warped in the past. Then I would use layer masks to blend it with the original to make the warping believable but this makes things a little less complicated than I used to do it... Sometimes, I'd use liquify to get the results I wanted too...
isolating the subject in another layer and using content aware fill for the background and using your technic i.e warp is the best, avoids the distorted lines in the background
Hi, Is there a way of splitting the handles of each warp points like you can do it on a vector anchor handle with the convert point tool? Very often I feel the need it would be great to set a direction of the anchor handles, but the for of them are fixed according to I have no idea what, sometimes they are in 90degree to each other, sometimes not, but I cannot move them separately and completely makes warp impossible at some places.
Here is what adobe should do: draw lines and warp. -1st you draw the limits so only the things inside the limit gets warped -2nd you draw skeleton lines that will be the guide for the warp -3rd you filter if you want to warp everything or ignore different elements (background)
Liquifiy uses predefined grid sizes, so that i s one limitation. Liquify also opens in a new window, so you can't see exacly how your liquify layer works with layers above and below. The new warp is 100 times better I think!
Great practical tutorial. I would have not known about this new feature or how to use it if it weren't for you. Thanks again Aaron for all that you do.
regarding the shark... in earlier PS versions... isn't it just the same as liquify filter/tool with the mask that comes along with it on which areas to stay and which to be affected?
Is it me or is the liquify filter much more user-friendly and intuitive? And it seems a way faster workflow to just use the liquify filter instead of all these steps setting up grids with the split warp. Am I crazy, can somebody help me out and tell me why I would use split warp instead of liquify?
Liquify is great, especially with the new freeze and thaw tools, but this also looks great, and I suspect that different shots will benefit from different tools. Can't wait to give this a try (or shove, spin, etc.)...
can you fix a wash basin to a wall?. The basin is in a different angle with the wall. I tried vanishing point and perspective, but its distorting the actual image. Can you help me place the basin.
Admittedly, I’m a beginner. I am trying to create a mockup of a blank Christmas ornament to change out designs. In ps19, I can do this easily. However, I can’t get it close in ps2020. In the custom shape section I wish they had a sphere. The two that are kinda close were extremely difficult to work with (in my opinion). Im spending way too much time on something I used to do so quickly. Am I missing something? Thanks.
Hi Aaron I want to try split warp tool but it is all greyed out when try to use it. Googled an answer about Use Graphic Processor- Advanced Settings - Use .....Accelerate Computation are all selected but it is still greyed out - HELP :-)
Silly question, but couldn't this be done with the Liquify tool? That's what I use if I want to warp only a certain section of an image (usually when I'm painting in photoshop, but I suppose the same applies to editing photos).
I attempted the split warp with the second right click, but there's no option for it. Am I missing something? Photoshop is updated to the newest version
Hi Aaron, I was wondering if you could do a more in depth tutorial involving some of the options within the options bar when working with warp tools? In particular there is a small box which allows you to click a square on the reference point locator. I'm having a nightmare trying to work out how to use this tool as I can't seem to find a tutorial that shows how and when and where it could be useful, Thanks in advance. Skinz72
1999: Hey, check out Mesh Warp in After Effects 4! 2019: Hey, look at this cool new controlled - split - crossy lines warp thingy in Photoshop! (i guess i'm in a mood)
Maureen Denny If you Warp a Selection you always have to be careful with the edges of the selection. Most of the times you get gaps between your selection and the base Image. Until now you always had to fill that gap with something.
Everyone saying that such and such program has had this for ages needs to stop; you don't know what you're talking about. Photoshop has Liquefy, Puppet Warp, Content Aware Scale, and many other tools. This is just plain Transform...it's been round since at least Photoshop 5, Adobe just expanded on it and made it more robust. That being said, the old version of the Transform tool was a little bit better than what was shown here. It was split into different sections and you had more control over what you adjust than what was shown here. It was night and day compared to the 2020 update though.
It's cool to have a new tool at our disposal but in this case I think I will keep using the rectangular marque to confine the area, jump it to a new layer, then warp, make a layer mask and erase any unwanted distortions. I have been using this method for the last decade and I have to say it is a quicker, easier and more accurate workflow that yields better results in my opinion.
Been using Puppet Warp in PS to do this for years (since CS6)... for most things I think it's still better than split warp, but it's nice to have another way to do minor isolated tweaks I guess.

In the first picture, you could have selected the shark using the quick selection tool and then chose to transform it without changing the rest of the photo.
You can hold ALT on your keyboard and left click and it will add a point on the warp making a horizontal and vertical split.

Liquify or this new warp - when to use each?
Nena Tirkkonen Use liquify for minor adjustments, like face tuning or any skin bump you want flat. Use Warp for global adjustments.

Not bad, though I would use something else like the History Brush tool to restore the vertical lines of the iron bars and chain behind the girl.
Tinderbox great suggestion!!!
But then they wouldn’t line up. You’d be better to isolate those areas before distorting
I would duplicate the layer and mask that area after warping

It is surely a great update. Could this feature replace the use of liquify of greater control?
How would you do to not distort the background? Because in the second photo, it’s pretty disturbing (right of the dress)
How is this different from puppet warp? It just seems like an (arguably) slightly easier approach to puppet warp.
Same thought here. Apparently not too many people know about it. But definitely easier to use.
Hello there. Is it possible to free transform (warp) multiple layers at once in Photoshop?
