Yes indeed. I may be off concerning that observation but that is what it felt like to me. I think Marcus struggles more than we think now days. Who wouldn’t with that power and temptation? Thanks so much for watching buddy! Stay blessed.
It’s definitely relevant. I imagine in a position like being a paramedic it comes in handy for sure. Thanks so much for watching and have a blessed weekend!
Hell ya dude! That’s so cool to hear! I guess if you fly planes long enough you have to start thinking like a stoic! Checked your page and IG out. Super cool stuff man. Thanks for watching and hope you stick with it. We got this. Stay blessed!
Been awhile since I have been up that way. Went to Beaver Dam for a concert one time and drank (just a few) beers in Milwaukee. I think a flying book club (minus the Milwaukee beer) would be a fantastic idea! Haha Likewise hit me up if you are ever down this way. Stay grinding brother!
I’ve read Meditations three times and never once had I thought that the common themes could be representative of the times when, actually, he needed to remind him that he didn’t behave in a way that he should. You’re completely right. My journal doesn’t talk about the times I extolled Stoic virtues. It only includes the parts when I struggled to live up to my expectations of myself! A very grounding and humbling thought. Also reminds us that Stoicism is a practice, and a discipline, and something we should continue to strive for
Yes indeed! It didn’t hit me until I reflected on my own journal. I rarely mention the things I am doing great but I always include where I am falling short. I could be wrong but i do believe MA struggled with most of what he wrote about. In terms of temptations he had it much harder than me as well. I can only imagine the demons a political ruler who is trying to live just must feel. Truly appreciate you watching my friend and hope you enjoy the rest!
I am going to have to look that translation up. I have the Robin Waterfield translation and it amazes me how different it is than the Harvard Classics version. The HC version is in my opinion harder to read so glad it was my second time through. Thanks so much for watching brother and appreciate your reply! Stay blessed and have a great week!
I’m going to have to find that translation. It seems popular. I am curious Heather, does any of the grades you know of read Meditations or at least go through some of it? We never read anything like that when I went through school. Figured it may be different where you are.
Thanks so much and I am def going to continue the series. Making these videos has been such a joy. Thanks so much for watching and have a blessed new year!
Great video as always. Question--do you read any or much in the way of contemporary books? I do here and there, but the more older books I read, the less interested I feel about today's books. And I don't mean that to sound elitist; there is good stuff out there, but I just find myself drawn to older material.
I do not read any new novels or fiction honestly. I read newer biographies such as Andrew Robert's, Chernow, and Isaacson, but trying to keep up with the Harvard Classics has me mostly reading older works. Once you get to writers like Baon and Milton you realize that no one today is anywhere close to their capability because of the time they would devote to the art or writing. Even with my kids, I have found that older books have more character-building and morals. Heidi and Pollyanna come to mind. I do read newer books when it comes to Atomic Habits and books like that. So you are not alone my friend!
Yes indeed brother! It’s a good read for sure. You probably have a better translation than the Harvard Classics one. Hope all has been well brother and thanks for watching. Have a great Thanksgiving and a stay blessed!
Really enjoying your reviews so far into this series. I am more determined to follow through as this gives me tranquility and order of which I lack. Also I'm hoping someday you could make a review of the writings of Henry David Thoreau in the future, I would love to hear your thoughts! Keep on keeping on!😀😀
Your kind words mean a lot and this series has been a great way to keep me on track as well. Thoreau is apart of the Harvard Classics so I will eventually get to him but it will be a little ways down the road. I truly appreciate you watching my friend and hope you stay blessed!
23:03 I don't think any of these books should be read just once, as mortimer adler, a great professor, mentioned in his book titled how to read a book, says that any good book should be read at least 3 times
Love me some MA.❤ I took philosophy at UOH before my graduate studies in politics. One of my best decisions in my matriculation. You should have a million views. Should we postulate about why?
I like to think that hidden diamonds, even though out of sight, still hold the same value. haha I enjoy MA as well. The more I read about him the more I want to understand the time period in which he lived. Thanks so much for watching my friend!
Great video rob! I like to think that Marcus would have thanked the coffee farmers back in the day as well for providing those miraculous beans! And.. I read through Meditations with you actually!
omg wait did you actually change the title haha crushing the first 30 seconds as always lol I like how you just casually grab the republic off your desk like oh yeah btw I have this man the micro cuts are so good at clearing the pauses I almost didn't realize that the video was more than 15 minutes - although the second half did feel a bit quote heavy it might be interesting to see a video or two after 6 months worth of videos as compilations of a few different topics that you talked about like: famous quotes I rephrased, classic ethics I agree with, classical ideas/ideals which belong in the classroom, philosophers whose work must be read differently, Ranking the 50 Harvard Classics
Haha figured it was worth a shot. Took some notes on those ideas. I have been playing around with a couple of them like you mentioned. Looked into common place books today a little more and I guess I already do something like that just never really heard it called that. Always appreciate your words of wisdom my friend!
Well if you never forget it then you have memorized it. But I agree, understanding it is more important than just mindlessly memorizing. Thanks for watching my friend!
20:54 interesting to hear Marcus words there because the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ did say this too, that the strong man isn't the one who could win the fight, rather its the one who could control his anger
It's such a shame to see a man, over the course of these videos, cling so desperately to the very thing responsible for the destruction of the very things he claims to be desperate to maintain or regain.
I’m going to need some clarification on this one. Curious to know what is being clung on to? What is being destroyed and what is he trying to regain? Just a smidge of ambiguity here and it may be my lack of intelligence to fully pick up what you are laying down. I truly appreciate you watching though and stay blessed!
@@The_Cause The ideology of individualism, equality, and the myth of "America" will forever erode the values you're concerned we are or have already lost. They're both founded on fundamentally flawed and incorrect assumptions about the world. Nothing anyone says on the internet will ever change anyone's mind, but I will direct you to G.K. Chesterton and Thomas Carlyle as starting points.
Well I am definitely looking forward to reading more into that. I know Thomas Carlyle is included in the Harvard Classics but not sure about Chesterton although he may be as well. That is the entire point of reading through these for me. Idk what is correct or the best way to think. I am anxious to see what views of mine changes by the time I get to the end though. Truly appreciate the advice and feedback. Means a lot. Stay blessed!
A great book... certainly worth repeat readings
Yes indeed! Thanks so much for watching my friend!
Great explanation on how the journal is someone trying to organize their mind.
Yes indeed. I may be off concerning that observation but that is what it felt like to me. I think Marcus struggles more than we think now days. Who wouldn’t with that power and temptation? Thanks so much for watching buddy! Stay blessed.
I'm a paramedic and I find stoicism and Marcus Aurelius in particular relevant to a lot of things I have encountered over the years in my career
It’s definitely relevant. I imagine in a position like being a paramedic it comes in handy for sure. Thanks so much for watching and have a blessed weekend!
DUDE KEEP DOING THIS! I’m starting my journey because of you!
Hell ya dude! That’s so cool to hear! I guess if you fly planes long enough you have to start thinking like a stoic! Checked your page and IG out. Super cool stuff man. Thanks for watching and hope you stick with it. We got this. Stay blessed!
@@The_Cause likewise! If you ever find yourself out in Wisconsin hit me up I’ll take ya flying & we can have book club haha

It's been a few years since I read this. I could benefit from revisitting.
Thank you for your thoughts.
No problem at all! Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching. Stay blessed!
Who listening to this has actually read all of Meditations? Let me know down below. Very curious about this!
I've read it twice so far. It has been very helpful to me in my life and work. The Gregory Hays translation is particularly good.
I'm on my second reading of it. I also use the Gregory Hays translation, but I'm going to purchase a different translation for comparison purposes.
I’m going to have to find that translation. It seems popular.

I finished it a couple days ago. It was my first time.
15:33 Yes, please do.
Yes to 15:34
Hoping to make that happen in the near future with new direction I want to go.
This is GOLD!! Thank you so much! Keep going!!! 🤩

Again, thank you for your efforts. I am saving up to get a set!
I think it will be well worth the money spent. I have already I feel got my monies worth and I am only finishing volume 3.

Why memorize the poem when you can understand it and never forget
Well if you never forget it then you have memorized it. But I agree, understanding it is more important than just mindlessly memorizing. Thanks for watching my friend!
At 11:11, man, buy a dishwasher!
That’s just stock footage at 11:11. With 4 kiddos a dishwasher is a must! Haha thanks so much for watching buddy.
Man with beard drinks specialty coffee and talks about stoicism and Marcus Aurelius. Is this parody?
The beard and amazing coffee are real, but the stoicism could be parody! Lol Thanks for watching my friend!

I detect an image-bearer. Modeling with kind curiosity. Clarifying en route to understanding. Shoot, I gotta go get me some coffee to keep up.
