This is why I don't deal with the public. I pick up mowers and machines, fix them and keep then for myself. I sometimes work on Family/friend's mowers and machines, but never the general public. I am just not good at putting on a fake smile and acting like the person I am talking to is not a moron.

That is exactly why I only work on my own equipment and also vehicles. Don't get me wrong, I will help out my friends, but always tell them I'm not responsible for any damages and I'm here to only help them out. Nobody else, not their other friends. And really, after that happened several times, when I get a call now about needing help, I just tell them to go to a mechanic. No more of that bs.
Also it's good you stand up for your own man, never let anyone try and step on you

Best to put the parts in a box and offer/ask if they want back or dispose.
If they don’t want them back you can bin or keep what you want for spares.😊
It’s not so easy dealing with a small amount of persons, just remember the other 99 percent of good customers.😊

The owner of the unit with the carb and wheel replacement needed to see the actual old parts because there was a secret code hidden in them by which he could verify they were his actual parts and you weren't using them on someone else's mower and then repeating the process.

One of the most beautiful features of a hobby business in comparison to a full time business the the ability to tell rude or demanding customers to “go kick rocks” and never darken my doorstep again without the fear of killing your livelihood! I tend to fix things for others (people I know or friends of friends) much cheaper than any shop they could find, so I don’t get much rudeness and demanding interactions, but I do make it clear that I work at my own speed and if the job requires more time and parts than anticipated; it is what it is but I will be as fair as I possibly can be. Also, they provide parts but I email or text them links to the exact parts they need to purchase and usually at the best possible price I can locate for them. So far, so good. My tolerance for bs, nonsense, and “I don’t trust you” is minimal. I typically return old parts but after a few times, the customer will usually tell me to just dispose of them. In my experience, most people who don’t trust you and think your going to screw them without any reason for thinking it are the same kind of people that you can’t trust and that will screw you without any good reason! Sometimes, though, people have just been screwed and are gun-shy coming off that bad experience, but those people tend to relax after a positive interaction.

Again you are correct. I do not do deep cleaning to any customers equipment unless they are willing to pay for it. A few customers had hissy fits when I charge for cleaning so I don't do it unless asked to. I usually do a quick wipe down and blow them off with compressed air.I also had customers that brought me equipment after someone else worked on them. Parts missing etc. I am sure you know the story on these types of people. One guy brought me a Tecumseh carb to rebuild, I put it thru my ultra sonic cleaner and changed the needle and seat, and it came out good, He called me a few day later and said the engine was sputtering. I asked if he adjusted the high and low jets, He said he did not know how to do it. As you can quess, I had to drive to his house and do the adjustments. Of course he did not want to pay for my extra time. Thanks for that great video.

One of my customers had a mower serviced by a neighbour. Apart from the spark plug not being the right one , he hadn't tightened it enough so there was little compression. The oil was filled to the top of the dipstick. No air filter but a piece of sponge he'd found. I sorted it all out and I got nothing from her, not even thanks. I think she thought I was ripping her off for charging her for parts.

I am the neighborhood fix it guy and I had one gal bring over a ratted out Craftsman lawn tractor. I took a look and said no promises but the engine will run. After a carb replacement and then I did a deep clean and adjusted the valves and changed the oil. Put it all back together and the engine ran fine. That is when I discovered issue after issue the main one it would barely creep forward. I looked at the drive belt for hydro and sourced a replacement belt and a new spring for the tensioner. Repaired that and the rabbit hole got bigger but I had finally stopped and called the customer. Got the lawn tractor running and driving I wasn't going to do more as the price was kept going up. Total cost of 4 hours labor and parts was enough. Of course being that I had the customers wanting the old parts before I had them laying on the floor next to the lawn tractor when the customer came over. The customer asked why I had not waxed her rusted out lawn tractor I just said I only clean them up. Wax is on you.

In a nutshell, if you do not have a brick and mortar repair shop with a sign attached, then it's just a hobby of yours tinkering with small engine equipment. This is what people perceive and expect; You tinkering with their old abused and neglected lawn equipment crap. . so when You charge them for parts and labor, well now, that's just messed up! Don't you know, You are that nice guy that sits in your rocker out in your backyard working on all their junk for next to nothing (free). Many of these fine citizens probably have a conversation among themselves about whether to tip you a few bucks for fixing everything for free. I am fortunate, I repair equipment *brought to my doorstep* by only 2 people. I have selected these 2 to move forward with. Others have come and gone and never- by my choice, to return. Good video sir.

Also heard story of an older man complaining of always having low tire pressure. The tech cleaned rims sealed tires checked for leaks the whole 9 yards. Did this several times apparently. No leaks ever found. Eventually the tech glued the valve caps on. The costomer came in complaied he cant get the caps off to check the pressures. Long story short it turns out the man would check his tire pressures constantly, unknowingly letting out air little by little everytime he check it.

The person who is asking the questions is in control of the conversation. "Why didn't you clean my mower?" - Generally I don't, unless asked for in advance, and there would be a charge, why do you expect it to be done? "My last guy always cleaned it." - What happened with your last guy? - Answering the question, then immediately asking a few of your own is a way of controlling the conversation. - People generally take this 2 ways, they either answer your questions, or you don't do business with them again. (I like this.)
For old parts - easy to just put them in a plastic bag, and tape it to the machine - If they want it, they want it, if they don't they can throw it away themselves. I have plenty of old plastic grocery bags that I use for this and other purposes.
By the way I really like your videos, I wish I could give more than a thumbs up.

Small engines ar my hobby, but electronic service was my full time occupation. I ALWAYS gave back the used/defective parts. It gives the client the opportunity to see and if desired test the old parts. Also it instills confidence that I did not keep used parts to re-install in someone else's device. I also refused to install client-supplied parts, since I could not warrant the work if the parts failed. BTW that 675 series mower is the best one I've ever owned.

My dad bought the trimmer back in the early 2000's and use to put a little more oil in the fuel mixture so it use to smoke alot. He carried it to one of his friend to get it serviced. His friend said it needed a carburetor kit to repair it and my dad bought it and paid him to repair it. Some time later we got it home only to realize that he didn't do ant work on our trimmer but instead he had a similar trimmer that needed a carburetor repair kit to get it working properly. My dad being the soft hearted person said to forget it and we'll get it repaired somewhere else. I on the other hand had gone to his place and exposed him as the dishonest person he was infront of his customers with lots of bad words and demanded to be reimbursed and compensated for wasting our time which he did very quickly to get rid of me. In the end it had a free Stihl service day in my area to which I carried my trimmer and bought the carburetor repair kit and got it fixed.

    • @INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE

I would still remove the head and do It the conventional way instead of trying to remove the connecting rod will leaving the piston at the bottom of the cylinder. And yes, as long as there isn't any metal on the rod journal, replacing the connecting rod with a new one would certainly fix it.

    • @mattcat231
      @mattcat231 ปีที่แล้ว

One thing I have noticed on the Quantum engines is that they don't like carbon build-up in the combustion chamber, on the piston, or on the valves, it often times sounds just like rod knock. I pull the head off and clean everything up, put the old head gasket back on and fire it up, if it sounds better, i replace the head gasket and ship it, but if it still knocks, the engine comes apart or gets parted out

Here is what I do, if the customer wants it done a certain way, and it doesn't cost me time or money, they I do, it but if it cost me time or money, I let the customer know it will cost me time, and money to do what you want, so if you want it done your way, then I will be paid for my time, and parts just like you would charge me for your time and parts, only fair, I am just as valuable as you are, if they don't like that they are more then welcome to take it to a pro shop, I'll even give them a number of a trusted shop..... I will give it 4 days, and they will be back, mostly because of the time their item will be down for repair, remember you are giving them a convenience, and remember everything cost money, never do a free bee cause they will expect it every time.

I found 2 lawnmowers in the trash today one older toro and a older rally mower pardon my language but if someone ask me for the old parts I replaced with new ones I would tell them to solve the old parts up their ass and not to even ask me to fix their lawnmower again
