I literally loved Joan deeper into the show. She was just so lovable and caring. And man Don and Pete and Peggy. God the whole cast had so much depth. Pete really came into his own.
I always enjoy seeing such stylized actors in their street clothes. It makes me wonder just how much fun each of us could have under the care of those experts in costume and makeup!
I literally cried when Lane did what he did. He had such a childlike wonder with the U.S. and I feel like the audience really bonded with him in that one episode when Don took him to the movies. I want to find Jared Harris and give him a hug because it looked like he was channeling real pain when Don told him to resign.
I've watched this whole show about 6 times- it's definitely one of my favorite shows of all time. The characters, the cinematography, the fashion, the acting! All amazing and perfect. Can't say that all of that is as perfect as Christina Hendricks, though! Also, at 8:40 when Jon talks about shows "overstaying their welcome" I instantly thought of The Walking Dead.

Thanks to Netflix, shows like Mad Men are experiencing a resurgence based on binge watching. This interview shows the genuine genus of the show how in that they planned to run the show 7 years, and say this in the fifth season. Compared to Dexter that stayed on showtime four years past its expiration date and people quit watching. This is what made Mad Men unique, was it was a story that took 7 years to tell. 😎👍
Mad Men, what a marvelous look into the world of my parents. I would have been about Bobby's age then. I was born in 56. It helps me to understand the nightly martinis and the indifferent parental style. Fast forward 30 years when I was raising my kids in the 90's and I was involved with everything and that's not an exaggeration. My kids were going to have the memories and opportunities that my parents could have cared less about. Now my kids have kids and they are busy with their lives and doing beautifully. The irony is I am treated with the same indifference by my children that I experienced from my parents. I'm beginning to wonder if my parents had it right all along.
While the show was active, I started watching in its second season and gladly followed it all the way to its conclusion. Recently, I decided I ought to watch that first season I missed on NetFlix - especially since the first season is often a series' best foor forward... Well, of course I ended up binging the entire series from pilot to finale over the course of a couple of weeks. Time well spent. I'm not even sure that I can cite another series that went seven seasons start to finish deep and never "jumped the shark". Mad Men remained consistantly sublime in attention to detail for an era of explosive social change and riveting in its continuity for deft focus on multiple nuanced character arcs, dynamics, and relationships that are all seeded and nurtured to satisfying cultivation. Mad Man is an impressive accomplishment in television. Even more so when uninterrupted by production broadcast delays. It may not be my most favorite show ever, but it's in strong contention for placement among the top of the heap for sure. What a rare great gift of a show.
Am re-watching all the series right now (thanks COVID-19 self-iso 🙄) and it struck me again just how incredibly well-written and executed it is. But also I how extraordinary it looks. So much love in the colours, lighting, cinematography, editing, music (wow!!), sound recording - and attention to detail in every frame. Strange when you read the basic premise of the show, that it in no way reflects the existential problems, issues and magical/seductive qualities that it embodies. And which slowly emerge through the extraordinary script. Literally a world within worlds. For me, along with ‘Six Feet Under’, one of the most incredible TV series I’ve ever seen and can never be matched for it’s singular voice and impact.

I have been watching all 7 seasons of Mad Men on Netflix over the past few months (I only have the final episode remaining to watch, and I am so lamenting the series being over - but, as I've done with other series, I intend to watch it all again at some point, knowing what I now know about the characters. I'll get the box set so I can enjoy background feature materials!) I can easily say that Mad Men is my second-favorite TV drama ever (first place goes to Six Feet Under). Such complex, fascinating characters and evocative story lines, against the rich historical and cultural backdrop of the 60s. I have done some acting in the past, and SO wish I could've been on that set at some point. I believe what Hamm says here about them being close-knit; I bet they had a blast. Slattery seems like a real pisser, and not surprisingly, since Roger Sterling is one of the funniest characters I've ever experienced (though of course that has as much to do with brilliant writing). Hamm also seems a bit like Don in his generally serious demeanor, but it was great to see him break into a full-blown smile at one point! Too bad Jared Harris (Pryce) didn't get a word in - I really dug his portrayal of Lane, and I know he directed at least one episode (Hamm and Slattery directed more than one each). Also too bad Elizabeth wasn't on hand...going to try and find more cast interviews.

The only thing that bothered me a little was how they left a lot of open endedness to some plot lines; we see them in one episode and that's it, as if they vanished into thin air. For example, Laney developes a crush on a picture of a girl he found of a lost wallet, which turned out to belong to some mobster looking guy. This could have been an excellent and suspenseful story arc. There are many other examples, to me it seemed like the writers were getting desperate and not focused on the sense of continuity important to television series. Overall, great cast and direction and dialog writing. However, number one in my book, has to go to the set and costume designers. They not only captured the mode, but made a natural transition from the early to late 60s, which must be one of the most radical and obvious change of style and fashion in modern history. The only character who did not change much was Don, but that went completely with his character. Kudos to the costume and set designers!
And Roger. The great fashion change after World War One, from graceful romanticism to machine and jazz age angular adventurism, is a contender to that from the suited, hatted and gloved early through mid-1960s to the society-gone-wild late 1960s into the fauvistically paisleyed, polyester peacock '70s.

One of the best shows ever in existence. I didn’t know how much we needed a show like Madmen until it wasn’t there anymore. I miss it so much. I have to say I didn’t enjoy the show quite as much when Don got together with Meghan. The writing felt different after this character was introduced and I just loved Betty so much...
I bought the DVD's and keep watching the show. I am amazed how underneath all this brilliant writing and acting are major social points like the "family values" people who are making their money off 2 piece bathing suits but insist they are for "family values" and don't want "sexy" ads. Total hypocrites. I love the way Don throws them out of his office.
I've ignored Mad Men for the longest time because I thought it wasn't good. But I'm mistaken! Now that I'm in the final episode it's like I don't want to play it anymore. Perhaps maybe because I don't want it to end. My heart is feeling sad and I hope the ending is not that heavy.

MAD MEN: I was born in 1952, therefore I was 2 years older than Sally. It was very well done. I watched the 5 episodes on Netflix nonstop. 2 things: 1ST)Don’s character: It makes you wonder all the time: is he good, or bad, or just human, with negative and positive traits? UNTIL LANE’S SUICIDE. He kicked a man who was drowning back into the water. A minimally decent person does not do that. Even criminals may eventually save someone. Then I decided: DON IS A MONSTER! His crimes, for which he would be court-martialed, were far worse than those of Lane’s, and he WAS GIVEN A 2ND CHANCE by people in the firm who knew about his desertion and covered up for him. In front of a judge his crimes would be punished infinitely more severely (2 YEARS IN PRISON MINIMUM, dishonor, or even death, since the crime was aggravated by stealing someone else’s identity. Source: Wikipedia) whereas Lane probably would not even go to jail. 2ND) THE QUICK MORAL DECADENCE: IT WAS NOT LIKE THAT ALL!! AND I MYSELF BEGAN WORKING IN OFFICES IN 1970, CAN VOW FOR THAT. But there are groups, especially those who are in favor of gay marriage, as opposed to those who are against it, WHO LOVE PORTRAYING THE STRAIGHT COUPLES AS BEING EXTREMELY PROMISCUOUS, because that gives them the ideal defense. SEE!! We cannot be blamed for any moral decadence, BECAUSE STRAIGHT COUPLES BEGAN THE WHOLE PROCESS OF MORAL DECADENCE FIRST ANYWAY!! HAVEN'T WE HEARD THAT MANY TIMES? !! There are 2 gay groups: the honest, decent ones and the radical movements. And it is the 2nd group that loves to use that argument.
tldr; But I kind of get the gist of what you're saying. Every character has broken down since the start of episode 1. At least, every male. I think peggy and berty were the only ones who evolved through the entire series. Peggy grew up and made it in a man's world. Peggy stopped being a jealous child and eventually made it through obesity. Don's character broke down the most, the guy has serious issues.
Nah lane's crimes were those of excess fraud and misloyalty. He personally defrauded both Don and their company. Don didn't steal from anyone you (or I) misunderstand or disagree upon the value system of the character. Lane was basically greedy and weak he didn't say no to his wife and didn't want to lose faith. The company had a good year ... He just needed to ask his wife to chill. Instead he chose to defraud people and abuse his position of power as head of accounts. Don had no other option but to fire him. He simply can't be trusted to play his role. And for the record he would have done jail time. Dons crimes were essentially victimless wernt they?
some of the humor is absurd, sarcastic, ironic and black. This pertains to the lawnmower especially, ie. 'foot in the door'. haha. As for the rest, it's more a tribute to the characters being trapped in such a time. It seems likely to me that in today's world most of the characters wouldn't have gotten married, but that's a modern inflection. The draper scenes are bittersweet and tame, but in a huge majority of mad men scenes there are huge events culminating from the tiny details.

I bought the DVD's and keep watching the show. I am amazed how underneath all this brilliant writing and acting are major social points like the "family values" people who are making their money off 2 piece bathing suits but insist they are for "family values" and don't want "sexy" ads. Total hypocrites. I love the way Don throws them out of his office.

I've ignored Mad Men for the longest time because I thought it wasn't good. But I'm mistaken! Now that I'm in the final episode it's like I don't want to play it anymore. Perhaps maybe because I don't want it to end. My heart is feeling sad and I hope the ending is not that heavy.

Yes. I would love to have heard Jared Harris explain how he acted Lane's hanging, without actually hanging. That dangling corpse did not look like a dummy. If not Mr. Harris, brilliant special effects.
MAD MEN: I was born in 1952, therefore I was 2 years older than Sally. It was very well done. I watched the 5 episodes on Netflix nonstop. 2 things: 1ST)Don’s character: It makes you wonder all the time: is he good, or bad, or just human, with negative and positive traits? UNTIL LANE’S SUICIDE. He kicked a man who was drowning back into the water. A minimally decent person does not do that. Even criminals may eventually save someone. Then I decided: DON IS A MONSTER! His crimes, for which he would be court-martialed, were far worse than those of Lane’s, and he WAS GIVEN A 2ND CHANCE by people in the firm who knew about his desertion and covered up for him. In front of a judge his crimes would be punished infinitely more severely (2 YEARS IN PRISON MINIMUM, dishonor, or even death, since the crime was aggravated by stealing someone else’s identity. Source: Wikipedia) whereas Lane probably would not even go to jail.
2ND) THE QUICK MORAL DECADENCE: IT WAS NOT LIKE THAT ALL!! AND I MYSELF BEGAN WORKING IN OFFICES IN 1970, CAN VOW FOR THAT. But there are groups, especially those who are in favor of gay marriage, as opposed to those who are against it, WHO LOVE PORTRAYING THE STRAIGHT COUPLES AS BEING EXTREMELY PROMISCUOUS, because that gives them the ideal defense. SEE!! We cannot be blamed for any moral decadence, BECAUSE STRAIGHT COUPLES BEGAN THE WHOLE PROCESS OF MORAL DECADENCE FIRST ANYWAY!! HAVEN'T WE HEARD THAT MANY TIMES? !! There are 2 gay groups: the honest, decent ones and the radical movements. And it is the 2nd group that loves to use that argument.
tldr;
But I kind of get the gist of what you're saying. Every character has broken down since the start of episode 1. At least, every male. I think peggy and berty were the only ones who evolved through the entire series. Peggy grew up and made it in a man's world. Peggy stopped being a jealous child and eventually made it through obesity. Don's character broke down the most, the guy has serious issues.
Nah lane's crimes were those of excess fraud and misloyalty.
He personally defrauded both Don and their company. Don didn't steal from anyone you (or I) misunderstand or disagree upon the value system of the character. Lane was basically greedy and weak he didn't say no to his wife and didn't want to lose faith. The company had a good year ... He just needed to ask his wife to chill. Instead he chose to defraud people and abuse his position of power as head of accounts.
Don had no other option but to fire him. He simply can't be trusted to play his role.
And for the record he would have done jail time. Dons crimes were essentially victimless wernt they?

some of the humor is absurd, sarcastic, ironic and black. This pertains to the lawnmower especially, ie. 'foot in the door'. haha. As for the rest, it's more a tribute to the characters being trapped in such a time. It seems likely to me that in today's world most of the characters wouldn't have gotten married, but that's a modern inflection. The draper scenes are bittersweet and tame, but in a huge majority of mad men scenes there are huge events culminating from the tiny details.
I believe that John Hamm struggled very little if not ever to play the character Don Draper.... he is so Don Draper in real life. Very cool.
