Ahh I just loved Conner! Even though Dr. Oliver was the official leader of the team, Conner had his moments where he shined and didn’t hesitate to take charge when Dr. O wasn’t around.
Not to sound mean, but how could you not like Carter? Yes, he is a leader type character, but he still has a lot to learn like been less reckless and think first, his inspiration to become a firefighter is interesting, and he’s way more mature, powerful, and has a better presence than some loud mouth red in every modern Sentai. Looking at you Lucky.
Carter was one of my favorite Red Ranger because he was the "all American-type" leader. Like he can do no wrong... However he also makes mistakes. I liked him because he's more disciplined due to the fact that he's a firefighter. It might seem like he's boring but he makes sure him and his team are safe and able to get the job done. 🤷🏾♂️
Carter is kinda boring, but I’ll always love him from the time he tried to run over that monster with the jeep instead of getting out and fighting it hand to hand 😆
I agree with what you said about Connor and alot of the Disney era Reds; they actually felt like characters. That's what I hope for going forawrd that we get characters that feel y'know like actual characters with some modicum of depth and growth, and not just a bunch of bland Plesantville-esque mannequins that only spew heavy-handed moral sermons.(Hell, say what you want about Sentai and it's reliance on Over the top loudmouth hot-blooded always on Red rangers, but atleast we had some semblence of characterization.) Seriously, even if it's a show geared towards children, that doesn't mean you have to pidgeonhole yourself into beliving that the characters have to be overly perfect role models.(Hell, that's one of the points I raise about a Lupat adaptaion; not every character needs to be a perfect role model, regardless of what stink parent groups raise about having theives as heroes in a kid's show being a bad influence.)
I like Devon from Beast Morphers because of this reason. At the beginning, he was this cocky guy who would get by because of his dad. When he became a Red Ranger, not only did he grow as a character, but he struggled to prove to his dad that he wasn't a slouch either. I loved that he got character growth, and watching his dad realize he was the red ranger has got to be my favorite version of the trope.
Really solid top 5! I love this video series idea, really excited for blue! Completely agree with Connor, Scott and Wes, but I'd swap out Casey and Jason for Andros and Shane. Shane was always one of my favorites, was very sad when his actor passed away... I liked seeing a relaxed red ranger in PR for once and one that could totally hold his own, but really had to grow up and take some responsibilities.

Well pitter-patter, let's get at her; My top 5 Reds in no particular order: TJ - Turbo Red. As natural a Leader as Jason was. Tommy was a good leader but he worked at it. Even when he moved to Blue, he was the leader in everything but suit color. Personally, I see TJ as the Leader but they were using Andros' toys so he didn't get to pick his color. Eric - Quantum Red. You want to talk loner Reds, he's your guy. He knew Wes as the spoiled rich boy. I believe his actions towards the Time Force Rangers was from that perspective. When he realized Wes was different, he was able to work with the group while staying his own guy. Leo - Galaxy Red. Talk about a story. He wasn't supposed to be the red ranger but ends up almost dying trying to stop the bad guy Jack - SPD Red. Could take or leave being a ranger, let alone being the red ranger. He just wanted to help Shane - Ninja Storm Red. Another great natural leader, imo.
Your takes are not bad. Misguided in some points. For example, Wes is a secondary leader. Nope. In fact that is very common misconception from the PR fanbase. It comes from the desperation of fans for Jen to be a leader. She wasn’t. She was an understandably emotionally damaged woman that made decisions based on her grief not on any evidence. Yes, Wes grows and becomes a better leader. He saves Jen in episode 2 and she freaks because of his face. That is the real reason she took the morpher back. She lose it in episode 3. Abandons all sense for most the 2 parter when Alex reveals he’s alive. Then an old partner is let loose and she goes off on her own like a dope. Each time Wes saves her. He gave them a place to live, a way to make a living, a way to blend in. He was always doing what leaders do. So secondary leader, not at all. He is the leader.
