I've been watching all kinds of different videos these homesteaders off-grid or whatever they are this guy seems genuine though sincere person someone who is really trying to preserve who they are in the land around them I think I'll subscribe
I've made a similar water bowl system for my pets. One thing I added was a float and water level flag. 1 Drill a small hole at the highest point you fill to. 2 get a piece of stiff wire 15 inches long and put it in the whole. 3 Get a cork from a wine bottle and place it on the INSIDE end of the wire. 4 Bend the wire in the middle 90 degrees.... move along and bend the wire again at 90 degrees. (So you have a U shape half inside half outside) 5 add a flag or another cork to the outside end of the wire. paint it a bright color.. Now you can tell if the water level is getting low from a distance.
Olive seems to appreciate all you have done for her...new house...water on demand...."walker" on demand.......:) Great video! Great looking "water tower"!
That's refreshing to have a channel respond to a comment, thanks homesteadeconomics! Anyhow, this fellow is so talented. I appreciate his attention to details. That makes all the difference. He has some good tools too. I have only recently started tool collecting. Tools make life easier. For instance, a skil saw, compared to hand saw. Each have their place. Welding, and cutting with a torch may be in my future. I hope this ain't an insult...homesteadeconomics reminds me of Chris Stevens from Northern Exposure television show. What i mean is artistic, with a hands on, practical approach.
Maybe as an add-on to it your could build a small cover to shade it so it doesn't get so hot. Probably wouldn't make a difference in the desert but just brain-storming. Loved how it turned out!
Thanks! she's got a special place in our hearts... she was the last one in the litter that wasn't spoken for. Sadly the solid color Aussies get picked last..but I can attest she's tops in our hearts! :)
I know you have a roof over the dog house but build a roof over the dog area. A couple of roofing panels and four posts. Slant it to a gutter to catch the rain water to fill up the dogs water barrel. Self sustaining and not connected to the main water supply. (Win Win)..Ta Daaaa Olive will have her own cool pad..Get even fancier by putting in some of those solar panels and putting a small fan in her house. I dug a hole under my dog house so he could crawl under there and cool down as well and with the roof over the hole area it would stay dry under there. Your Videos rock !!
What an awesome project, I bet you could make money selling those. I would love one for our dog. Love your videos, you create some cool things. I am from Connecticut, but have a lot of relatives that live in Arizona, I've been there many time and loved it. My favorite was horseback riding in the Superstition Mountains was I was young.
thanks Raymond! I appreciate it the kind words too :) and I've been to the superstitions to hike the Flat Iron trail ... awesome area! I imagine it would've been nicer on horseback though... my legs were shot when I was done...lol
Now that is one lucky puppy! New dog house and now auto water, hahaha and is a GREAT idea and being on a well am with you about hooking things up, we have auto waters for the horses and the one has tilted over the years and now has a steady drip. More a pain in neck to look at then anything but does make that spot in horse yard soggy.
Greg Wade yes, that's always a worry of mine...just afraid to drain them and have to haul water in. Will probably add some harvesting off of the shop roof once i get the inside workable👍🏻 But if your horse trough only has a small drip for that size of tank that's sounds like it's not too bad considering the size...just a drop in the bucket per se😉
Hi Joe. Do you have to worry about algae in the blue can? A metal/plastic roof with gutters feeding into the barrel is a great idea. It will also add extra protection against algae too. Cheers, Bill
Top notch as usual Joe. In the interim, you could wrap a little chicken wire around the hose to stop Olive chewing it - doesn't look the best, but will do the job. 👍🏻🤘🏻👌🏻
Jealous over here!! I need a welder at my house for my mailbox. Very cool lucky dog. That is so cute it looks like an old cowboys western water tower. hahaha
Very cool! I bet Olive will put this to good use in the hot Arizona summer. I am heading to Phoenix this weekend to start moving my daughter to the Denver area. You live in a beautiful state!
thanks TC! btw... I have a couple videos talking about my chicken waterer setup... similar to this by uses a 55gal barrel and waterer cups for the girls
I will check them out. I have been using poultry nipples fastened to gallon jugs with great success...but the chickens love drinking water freely from dishes. They get their waddles wet, and shake it off. Very fun to watch! I'd like to do what you have done, but with their own rain barrel. Maybe even put them up a solar panel. Happy chickens lay happy eggs.
Hi Joe. First off, sorry about the long comment. I'm a new subscriber :). I was watching my buddy Jake's TH-cam channel iamjake (he lives out of his Jeep Wrangler and is on a 50 State Road Trip with his dog Annie) and saw one of your videos in the suggested video section. I watched it and was pretty much hooked then spent the past 3 days binge watching all of your 178 videos. I really like your channel and the variety of topics and builds you cover. I want to thank you as you have inspired me to think about some projects to do myself, have giving me food for thought about being more self-reliant, and how I also can capture rain water as my water costs just continue to rise. I really appreciate the quality of your videos and know firsthand via Jake just how much time and effort goes in to making them...from setting up the camera for shots/camera angles, take and retakes, moving the camera, fetching the camera and then the time to edit, render and upload. You have a real passion for this Joe and I am very glad I stumbled across your channel and am now part of the amazing community you have created. **I do have a couple of questions for your next Q&A: 1) What is your age? 2) How many acres is your homestead? 3) What camera do you use? 4) Do you save all of your video footage? 5) What editing software do you use? Thank you again, Ken Nelson PS - I just sent your an email to kangaroojoe
Hey ken... sorry this took so long, I was working my way through the comments in order:) that sounds cool.. I'll have to check out jakes channel...and thanks for watching the vids and not being sick of my voice...lol... as for your questions... 1- mid30's 2-roughly 5 3-canon t6i 4-save most but don't have a great way to store it, not organzied at least;) 5- i use basic imovie, not fancy but does the trick and is easy to use:) talk later, Joe
Here in MN we would at least need a screen over the opening to keep mosquitoes and other insect larvae from growing in the tank. Not sure if you have insects that require that habitat in the desert. Great project!
My hunting property is near Moose Lake. We are still under water. Got another 2.5 inches this past weekend. Mosquitoes and Ticks are terrible this year.
I can vouch for the abundance of very large and plentiful mosquitoes in Minnesota. First hand experience in the boundary waters canoe area. They sounded like a horse fly inside of a canoe while portaging between lakes. Their bites raise huge welts. Only the fittest mosquitoes survive the winters up there, and now they are SUPER MOSQUITOES!
does it have a float to refill the bowl? I need something like this for placing it outside my dog´s house . . the water bowl gets contaminated by dirt all the time . . . specially on a windy day . . so I was wondering if a little roof over the bowl would help . . Im trying to design it .. the bowl automatic re-fill would be an extra feature . . good video greetings
Robin Lewis yes they are pretty easy to clean, just thread the hose off and take it off...once I add the pvc feed pipe I'll put a quick connect fitting to make it easier to disconnect ...Now you gotta build them one...I've seen your talents and I'm sure it would be amazing!!!!
For the cap: use a rubber band to hold a plastic bag cut-out. It's important to seal off the container, you don't want insects like mosquitoes or such to lay their eggs in the water.
...wow...another cool looking project... My concern might be the opening you lost the cap for.....cut some plastic screen and even rubber band...broccoli rubber and is perfect.... Any way here in Michigan the water tower would be a mosquito nest in just a few days or try even a "Red Solo Cup ".... To be honest tho you need the air exchange for the watering the connector pipe.. Overall tho a good lookin project you have... I see it in the greenhouse soon tho...self watering gutter gardens are in your future... I enjoy your creatful way of looking at things...enjoy your day...
thanks Will! I love tindering with these type of things...lol... and yes, I'll bet your mosquitoes up in MI are a bit more prevalent than ours... we do get them but only at the rainy times of year... which isn't too often:)

My siamese cats probably took your lid because anything plastic and they find it they will bad it around the house where I can never find it unless I look under our couches which are a rather hard to lift at the moment! Cute video 👏👏🎥👍🏡
JM at The Nuthouse ...oh yes...greenhouse, good! We just moved out starts from the gh to the main garden. I plan to make a movable shade structure in it this summer so then an update will be coming...I wanted to do more this winter but I got caught up in the container shop😉
Understandable! That is another of the super cool projects you shared! I'm interested to see how the heat will affect being in there this summer. I'll be watching! 😆
Great idea! I would be careful though, some dogs don't know when to stop drinking/eating so I would just keep an eye on her to make sure she isn't drinking too much
TheMisterbobman Dogs should have access to water at all times. I've yet to meet a dog who didn't know when to stop drinking with the exception of a puppy I fostered in kidney failure who eventrually had to be put down. Ted Alexander thanks so much ted! The fruit trees are doing well...loaded with peaches right now but they are smallish looking so I think we just not have culled enough early on. Will be doing a video on those and the garden later this summer... as well as adding some more trees to my rainwater garden area...I want to make it a year round productive area versus just during our monsoon season

use up side down position so it become automatically working like we put drinking water bottles
like dispenser
OK, you answered all the questions...EXCEPT...for the one I most wanted to see...that being the float valve.
I've been watching all kinds of different videos these homesteaders off-grid or whatever they are this guy seems genuine though sincere person someone who is really trying to preserve who they are in the land around them I think I'll subscribe
Olive seems to really like it! She's starting to have a small farm of her own! Great work as always my friend!
thanks Dimitri! Yes, it does kind of look that way... lol... I might have to get her some overalls:)
Joe
That is one lucky pooch. A cool house and her own self watering water dish.
thanks Chevy! she's using them already :D
My favorite part is your attention to esthetics. Everything looks practical, yet stylish and finished.
I've made a similar water bowl system for my pets. One thing I added was a float and water level flag.

That's so fun! It's like a miniature water tower.
I love water towers..lol... it was an excuse for me to incorporate one really :)
Olive has a sweet set up!
Chris Pruett thanks Chris!
Olive is sooo cute! She is adorable! She is so lucky to have you
Olive is a unique looking Aussie but a beautiful Aussie period!!! Love the care and effort and love put into your Aussie!!! She’s gorgeous
Thanks! she's got a special place in our hearts... she was the last one in the litter that wasn't spoken for. Sadly the solid color Aussies get picked last..but I can attest she's tops in our hearts! :)
OLIVE: What a cutie. LOVE IT.
That is so nice, what a Lucky little Olive.
thanks Lilly!
She is adorable.
Monorail *Beyond the Veil thanks! I agree:)

MUCH BETTER than using straight from the tap! We give our dogs filtered water that we also drink.

Nice water container stand. New to the channel. Olive is a cutie and seems very smart.
Lucky dog to have a human like you. Very good, Yup very good.
thanks so much... we are lucky to have her... she's gonna be my little shop dog and should be in a lot of future videos:)
Nice job ! this is one lucky and happy dog you have , instead of putting back the cap , it could be a small water collector
Claude Lefebvre thanks Claude! That is a good idea I might have to think about upgrading to👍🏻
Hi Joe. Do you have to worry about algae in the blue can? A metal/plastic roof with gutters feeding into the barrel is a great idea. It will also add extra protection against algae too. Cheers,

Well done! Yes, dogs will drink anything. We put fresh water out in a bowl for our dog every morning. She still prefers to drink out of her baby pool.
haha... yes, baby pools, mud puddle, toilet....it's all part of the hunt:)
that is one seriously overbuilt dog water bowel (and pretty cool)
Top notch as usual Joe. In the interim, you could wrap a little chicken wire around the hose to stop Olive chewing it - doesn't look the best, but will do the job. 👍🏻🤘🏻👌🏻
MamboTek hey, now that's thinking outside the box👍🏻 😃...might have to use that if I don't do the pvc
I've used on a number of things to protect them from my 4 legged angle grinder - her favorite chew toy is a railway sleeper.....
Another nice build Joe! Olive is a sweetie!
thanks Danny and Leslie! She is pretty awesome!! ... as well as a handful,lol... but is sure to be a little shop partner for years to come:)
Jealous over here!! I need a welder at my house for my mailbox. Very cool lucky dog. That is so cute it looks like an old cowboys western water tower. hahaha
So amazingly clever. When does her mini-bar and cabana go in?
GREAT project!!!! I'm so impressed with your welding! And OMG Olive is loads of adorable!
Nice work Joe.
Off Grid Nation thanks tommy😀
You have one spoilt princess on your farm 😁😁
I love your welds your very good at welding
Olive is absolutely adorable. ❤️
Very cool! I bet Olive will put this to good use in the hot Arizona summer. I am heading to Phoenix this weekend to start moving my daughter to the Denver area. You live in a beautiful state!
yes, she is already using it all the time now! btw...hope the move was smooth as possible:)
Nice project, and a beautiful dog. I may make one for my three chickens.
thanks TC! btw... I have a couple videos talking about my chicken waterer setup... similar to this by uses a 55gal barrel and waterer cups for the girls

Great idea!! in my case its great to provide medicated water for a small group of animals. Thanks!!! 👍
thanks Jose!
That dog is so cute
Awesome, you are very creative sir.
Dang dude you have mad skills. Great project and it looks awesome. Thanks for another great video.
So cute. That's great. And she likes it already. Great job as always and look forward to the next video.
thanks so much!
You're talented with metal work sir! 👏👏👏

thanks JLs!
Here in MN we would at least need a screen over the opening to keep mosquitoes and other insect larvae from growing in the tank. Not sure if you have insects that require that habitat in the desert. Great project!
thanks Mike... yes, we get mosquitoes as well but not as many as you probably get in MN. I'll probably go with a screened cap or something.
Very true! However this year has been quite dry in my part of MN so mosquitoes have been around but not all that bad this year.
My hunting property is near Moose Lake. We are still under water. Got another 2.5 inches this past weekend. Mosquitoes and Ticks are terrible this year.

Love the dog waterer... Guess I missed the dog house video, so I'll double back and find it... Hope all is well with you and yours... Peace...
Great build and Video Joe, also great to see you using your new workshop. Olive is super cute, almost enough to make me want to get another puppy:)
thanks Charl! she is great! but as cute as she is I'm looking forward to her getting past the puppy 'listening' phase...lol;)
Cool idea 👍👍

I can't find that kind of gravity float stop water bowl any where. Do you know the brand name or where I can find it online?
I love everything you make! Very talented person!
moonlite daze thanks so much moonlite daze!!
it seems the water might be to hot to drink in the summer. but it looks great love your videos
Awesome! Love how it all came together. Time for a walk! She has you trained already :-)
Red Wicker thanks steffanie! Yes I am trained...lol...she's got soooo Macy energy😅
Red Wicker 'much energy'. Lol...autocorrect;)
homesteadonomics I think auto correct has invented a new language, and most of us understand it! Lol
Awesome job. Love the new puppy.
RetroWeld thanks Douglas!! She is fitting in nicely🐕👍🏻
Cutie Olive
Thats cute
That is so cool!
For the cap: use a rubber band to hold a plastic bag cut-out. It's important to seal off the container, you don't want insects like mosquitoes or such to lay their eggs in the water.
i love that dog

looks great!
thanks Jason!
Sir thank you very good idea
Nice job sir!
Oh and Olive is so cute ! 😀
Just found your Channel hoping to see a lot more videos
that is one sweet contraption ....
good idea for emergency preparedness when city water not available.
Awesome video. Great job. Thank you for your videos
thanks Miguel! thank you for watching:)
Joe
I love your gabion for the rocks. 8-)
I love this and I bet she does too!
That's awesome. I can't wait to see your next project.
Daybird Aviaries thanks DA! I wish I had more time to do these updates...but likely the next couple will be shop related and maybe a garden related one...I got about 7 projects in mid swing right now and just need to finish one first..haha...my scatterbrain😉
All looks good
Not sure if I like the galvanized
Water dish if it is.
May not be good for the dog.
My thoughts
Great work as usual, now I can't wait to see the next project 👍🏼👍🏼
Fadsad Mo thanks so much fadsad! 😀👍🏻
Too cool! Great build as always!
Michael Bragg thanks Michael!
Interesting solution to keeping the dog watered in the hot weather. I'm pretty sure cute little Olive agrees with it.
Just thinking - Could you fit it with a rain harvesting catch basin so it's "auto" filled as rain is available? Probably too small / not enough rainfall for that?
Any concern about water breeding bugs in your area, such as mosquitoes, getting into the tank with it being open?
I live in Golden Valley Arizona and wish to set up a solid rain water system myself.
very cool
Awesome project :)
Oh awesome! I totally was thinking of doing something like this!
thanks Lara! you should... it was a fun build and I think it will beat filling up a bowl several times a day:)
My siamese cats probably took your lid because anything plastic and they find it they will bad it around the house where I can never find it unless I look under our couches which are a rather hard to lift at the moment! Cute video 👏👏🎥👍🏡
MAE HAY haha...I have a Devon Rex cat and she loves little plastic pieces too!! Although she's pretty slow nowadays 😉
Oh you must put her on TH-cam and share her with us pls!👍
Fantastic, it would be great if you could incorporate it with a dog house, just a thought....
awesome work keep it going!!!
Cool project. Just found your channel and subscribed. Looks like you've got some cool stuff on here.
Cute Puppy! Border Collie? Don't worry about the cap you need it to vent to work anyway. Just cover the hole with some screen.
thanks! she's an Australian shepherd:)
It's not fancy...you are always making cool stuff! Olive is a lucky dog! Blessings to your family Joe. How's the greenhouse? Updates???
JM at The Nuthouse we are lucky to have her😀. Blessings to you and yours as well😊
JM at The Nuthouse ...oh yes...greenhouse, good! We just moved out starts from the gh to the main garden. I plan to make a movable shade structure in it this summer so then an update will be coming...I wanted to do more this winter but I got caught up in the container shop😉

Great work can you tell us where you got the bowl with the float valve
Great idea! I would be careful though, some dogs don't know when to stop drinking/eating so I would just keep an eye on her to make sure she isn't drinking too much

nice nice carry on
Awesome video and DIY! What is the type of welding machine in use please?
Cute!
thanks!
Another great video! I wonder if you could capture water from the doghouse to fill it?
I have the setup in a corner where there's a lot of over shoot of my gutters so I might just have to try something like that:)
Hey Joe nice build, you are getting real good with that welder! - Jeff
thanks Jeff! It's coming along ... trying to be better each time:)
I like it a lot Joe. Very nice video. Was wondering how your fruit trees are doing.
Ted Alexander meant to say 'must not have culled'....stupid auto correct🤓
Wow, that looks really good! Keep it up :)
Thanks Ron!
