I finally get an answer about “illegal instruction”. When I was a kid, I played this game with a game genie and thought I did something illegal by using it. I thought the $0000000002 was the fine for using it. It scared me and I turned the game off in a panic.
9:04 most people may think that sonic would eventually... you know.. but i think it must of been from some cut level where a claw like machine it would grab Sonics waist or belly and move him somewhere on the stage. Or too another platform. And then the sprite at 9:02 would be also be used too, for the same thing, (meaning the two sprites would be switched out every time after using the claw. 9:08 and 9:10 would be used for dismounting the claw. Like if you agree.
"...Sonic waving his arms around while running, Sonic being electrified, Sonic falling upside down, Sonic grabbing something, Sonic holding onto a pole, Sonic hanging, *awkward silence* Sonic falling backwards, Sonic jumping forwards, Sonic jumping to the side, Sonic skidding, Sonic shrugging..."
I would liked if this sound 7:19, would be something like after the spindash/super peel out was completely charged, you could press the button to make a more powerful spindash, or if you wanted the charge to be completed more quickly or you didn’t want to wait for it to be completely charged you could just smash the button for it to be charged completely faster, for some reason I think the spindash sound from sonic cd sounds more powerful.
I think that the game would’ve been better with some of this content, especially the unused sprite (such as Sonic holding his breath). It would’ve added an extra layer of detail.
This is a different sprite. The feet are facing forward in the unused one, but down in the final one. This was used in the a late prototype, where sparks would fly up from the ground at certain points.
jesus miguel no it's supposed to be a joke because there was a adult swim show for Sonic the hedgehog and in one of the episodes it had text saying fun is infinite
The sound of the explosion sounds very similar to the sound made when you move the any of the blocks in Marble Zone. Almost identical, in fact. Great video, nonetheless!
People still find that scary? It's only scary for the first encounter, in bed with a nightlight hoping that mario sonic majin hybrid doesn't kill you in your sleep, 5 days can't get it out of your head, then all of a sudden you forget about it.
Apparently the hidden press start button you see after going through the debug menu and stuff is actually a bug. When loading up the game normally, the press start button text doesn't show because of a bug in the title screen code
Oh yay! A great channel that I get to watch grow to its inevitable success. Great job! Subscribed :D Although, the Sonic Mania music that started after the excerpt of Marble Zone, while great, was a bit too loud, and it drowned out your voice until you started talking about Sonic CD, it's just an issue I had, I'm not sure if it is consistent with everyone else.
Thanks for the compliment and the subscription! It genuinely means a lot to me when I read all of these nice comments. Yeah, sorry for making the music slightly too loud. I have tried, in more recent episodes, to lower the music volume.
That's OK, mistakes like that happen all the time, the important part is to fix it in subsequent attempts, which you seem to have done already. You deserve all the praise you get, you started out strong, and you only just begun, I'm excited to see what you can do in the future, because you can only get better from here.
I grew up playing sonic on the Sega Genesis and remembered a lot of the sprites and sounds being in the cartorage copies that I still own today. Seeing this makes me want to hook up my Sega and play again.
Timestamp 8:46 • Corrective text on screen for about a second, maybe less. • For the same length of time, there is text so small I can't read it, even with video paused. Can the editor, or someone with a bigger monitor, tell me what the tiny text in the bottom-right says?
I found a prototype of the game, the celebration jump was triggered at the end of a level, where you cannot leave, and if you jump, that animation was played.
Fun fact: the image in Sonic that is creepy the text says "Fun in infinite with SEGA enterprises", and also the prototype of Sonic 1 Sonic was originally going to be a Rabbit.
The 7th Special Stage in the mobile release is actually used, and with that, you can change the max emeralds from 6 to 7 in the level select, and transform to Super Sonic. So Christian Whitehead, the person who made the 2013 remake, basically knew we were gonna discover the Level Select code, so he made that for us. And Sonic looking up and left, was obviously gonna be used for a cutscene.
I know underrated, but this channel is so underrated it's a crime. I wonder how that trial would go. Anyway, this series is awesome! Easily one of the best gaming trivia channels, next to DYKG on my list. Very well done overall! And, here's a suggestion. What about the cut content of Super Mario World or SMW2: Yoshi's Island? Either of those might be fun. Up to you, though. Edit: Thanks for the heart!
Super Mario World might not work for an episode as Beta64 has already done it to a really good standard that I couldn't really add to. I'd have to look into SMW2, but it's on the list of possible episodes!
Unused Sounds Beliefs: Echo: Maybe after death in Labrynth zone, final zone and Scrap brain Bubbling: When Underwater Bumper: Unused Bumper Alarm: After defeating the Final Boss indicating it’s gonna blow up but Might have also been for Last ring
At 2:12 you said it is unused, but you are half right! It is always there BUT it's black test on black backround! I hope you realize this (If you look close yet can't see it, maybe it's because of mega drive and how much it can handle)
sonic had a sneezing super power where if he sensed danger was near it could cause him to sneeze. i dont have all the details but there is a video disscussing sonic’s secret super power.
Fun fact, the press start thing isn't there unless the secret credits are activated, because that text was supposed to be there in the final game, but somebody just goofed the code and it doesn't appear.
Why weren't Sonic's "Alright!" and "Yeah!" used? They could've been put in at the end of levels,Sonic saying yeah after hitting the goal post and the results pop up,and saying alright after destroying the seed capsule at the end of Zone 3.
What about the endings? I saw a good ending and bad ending. In Sonic Mega Collection, I saw the ending that was not used in the game, but I think it was used in the beta version, because I saw someone doing a playthrough showing the intro, the bosses, and then the ending that was not in the final version of the American version.
I finally get an answer about “illegal instruction”. When I was a kid, I played this game with a game genie and thought I did something illegal by using it. I thought the $0000000002 was the fine for using it. It scared me and I turned the game off in a panic.

sonic cd sound 69 is possbly sound of R2 the removed levels boss
the boss of R2 was some sort of motorbike so it could be possible
I’m glad no one mention the 69 me- oh wait I just did
Looking at the unused sprites in CD, it actually makes me think that at one point the intro cutscene was supposed to be in-engine
That's actually a pretty cool theory!
the sprite where sonic was hanging was the bad ending
danky-master-420-69 Sonic’s made for kids, remember that.
