The really remarkable thing is that Thomas Hicks (the rat poison and brandy guy) ended up living almost another 50 years and died in his 70s. Meanwhile, Fred Lorz (the guy who cheated) died of tuberculosis 10 years later, at the age of 29.
Michaell Phelps is a case study. Nobody can deny his effort, but he also had a massive advantage that nobody else had: His body produced much less lactic acid, so he tired slower and recovered faster. The man ate around 7-9k calories a day because he was swimming the whole day. Sometimes the best are genetic freaks and that is why I laugh when people make such a huge deal about certain things like having a lot of testosterone. Yeah, that is who the best and the record breakers are created. Not a single one of them was a normal person with normal values.
Yup! Oddly enough, the torch relay isn't an Ancient Greek tradition. It started when N*zi Germany hosted the Olympics in the 1930s. The one where Jesse Owens trashed the eugenics movement 😁
One of the first dropouts in this race was a man who had won the Boston marathon the previous year and was considered one of the best distance runners in the world, he expired in a pool of vomit just 1 and a half miles in, and yet a mailman in a beret who took a nap halfway through finished 4th and he may well have won if not for the nap and that he was also stopping all the time to chat with spectators.
For Michael Phelps, I grew up during the time where Phelps broke his first record which was eight gold medals in a single Olympics which beat the previous record holder of six gold medals, one silver. Who is also an American. He then won another during the London Olympics in 2012. I think another seven or eight in 2016 and then in 2020 when he retired I believe he won five. He's probably the single greatest Olympian to live so far. I was swimming at my local States swimming pool at the time and Michael Phelps was one of the people that we looked up to.
As someone from St. Louis, the time they held the marathon is laughably mindboggling. It gets dangerously hot and humid all the time when this event took place.
Fun fact there was less to no segregation in the early 1900s compared to 1950 that shit came in with Woodrow Wilson a president who grew up during reconstruction.
There was still neo-slavery, where business owners would get their illiterate and broke former slaves to sign into terrible contracts that had them work in similar conditions to before they were freed. In the south especially there were also a lot of laws that judges would use to wrongfully fine black people and make them rent out their labor to pay off the debt.
@@JohnBrown-tw2qi Oh yea and they were crazy efficient with it too especially when it came with asians. They literally would pit korean japanese and chinese immigrants against each other, telling one group the other group would do it cheaper and were better workers and would get to the point they basically got workers to do it for essentially nothing.
It used to be standard when a city hosted an Olympics Games that they would have at least one event that was a sport locally. At the 1904 Olympics, they had a hoop chasing event.
My father qualified for the Olympics in Korean Karate on the first Olympics where it was a sports. Sadly... Moscow Boycott. Worse, the boycott was announced AFTER the preliminary qualifiers. My dad says that while technically there was another competition to _actually_ claim a slot on the team, anyone who placed in the top 7 or 8 were almost guaranteed. He placed 3rd.
Way back in the day St Louis was a hugely important city as the gateway to the western part of the continent. Its importance declined as canals, rail, air travel, and highways each took a toll on the city's relevance. St Louis has tried to remake itself as a tourist destination, but its population is half of what it was in 1904 and continuing to decline.
Has someone who lives in that St Louis Metro area, what you have said is more about the City of St. Louis rather than the greater St. Louis Metro Area. The city has had population decline due to bad policies & crime. The metro area has a much larger population in the surrounding cities.
The guy who TOOK A NAP in the middle of race got the bronze medal after the cheater was disqualified. That alone shows how wild this marathon was. Welcome to the world of BlueJay!
So alica i recomwnd bluejays two videos on radiation. One explaining radiation and the other explaining weird radioactive trends. They basically pair together perfectly and are great
The earliest olympic games were a total circus with next to no oversight and everyone cheating in some way. It wasn't until around the 1960s when they started to crack down and cheating become more creative and nefarious.
Jon Bois series pretty good has a much better video about this marathon, watching ti's video... blue jay definitely made his video after watching Jon Bois, so much so I hope pretty good gets credited...
I need to see if I can find the Dollops episode of the Race of 1908, specifically the video from their live performance, and then pay for Alicia and Coma to watch.
As a Filipino, I wish the Filipino exhibit came back. Who wants my 23 & Me for proof? I actually hitch hiked for 20 miles in Las Vegas during the July summer time last year just to see my friend.

The Cuban guy actually ended up getting gold, because all three guys ahead of him were disqualified for various reasons.

I think we can all agree the steel ball run horse race would be a safer event.
