He's an interesting one to rank because I agree his cards on paper are very average for the most part but I think what makes him so strong is the amount of answers he has to situational things that most heroes don't have answers to, like destroying attachments, ignoring guard or patrol minions with wrapped in metal, getting tough statuses from his attack event, his emergency bubble, all combined with 2 activations per turn makes him very well rounded and above average in essentially any play style.
Absolutely. You better summarized what i attempted to in this video lol. The cape gives him the foundation to board control, then the situational answers when he gets them is insanely powerful, but the card itself is average or below average otherwise
yeah - he's a great example of the sum being worth more than the parts. a decent amount of his kit is situational, but the answers to those situations are super strong and the rest of his kit is enough to stand on its own. not to mention, his situational cards feel fuckin awesome to use. it's not like, ok now magneto can mildly deal with x situation. he just eliminates it lol. so satisfying
@@Doug4130 Yea totally agree it feels very very satisfying to wrap a minion on metal or to discard a nasty villain attachment! Tons of fun cards and altogether a very strong hero 💯
I think the thing with Magneto is while most of his cards are situational, you’re almost always going to be facing a villain where at least some of the situational cards are incredibly powerful. Against Green Goblin for example, Wrapped in Metal and Magnetic Missle are suddenly unbelievable cards. In protection, Magnetic Bubble is amazing etc. He’s a hero that can solve most problems is what I’ve found!
Yes, good point! I will say that the 2 most difficult minions in mutagen formula’s set are elite so Magneto can’t wrap them in metal, but otherwise it feels very powerful. He’s definitely a great problem solver so although i rank individual cards lower, i think together they make him a strong hero
I am currently playing him through a 3 player game of AOA, and we just got through Dark Beast, so into him 4 games. No solo plays yet. I found his helmet has been super good. It's one less ER than a resource generator plus steady (3 ER for the generator, unshakeable is 2 ER), and so far it has saved me from being stun/confused at least once each game! Huge value there. And since I always have a Metal card, I've rarely not found a use for it each turn. In three player I'd put wrapped in metal, metal shards and electromagnetic blast at A tier. They are able to hit basically everytime they enter my hand, though Electromagnetic Blast was a waste against Apocalypse. I think they are probably ranked properly for solo play. And wrapped in metal just gets around so many nasty when defeated, toughs, etc.
Personally, i prefer X-Jet or Helicarrier over the Helmet unless i know the villain has stuns it confuses. Definitely if you have Magnetic cards more often the Helmet is better. And good point for multiplayer, i agree that at higher player counts, those 3 cards are a lot better with more chances of minions/side schemes/attachments coming in play
As always I love your take and this is a great breakdown! However I totally disagree when it comes to magnetos armor, it’s my second priority behind his cape every single game. The ability to thwart or attack for 3 twice in a turn is just crazy good and it gets even better when you add a ready from utopia or aspect cards that can give you another ready (especially in protection) on top of it. To be fair though since I prioritize it so much I deckbuild with it in mind, so I add basically as few lightning resources as possible (I don’t even run the double energy resource card) and absolutely pack his deck with physical and mental resources. If you do that it very rarely ever whiffs and you get a hero who has 3thw/3atk stats with 2 super reliable readies each turn so for me it’s high A to borderline S tier. Great video again as always and I can’t wait to watch all your upcoming magneto playthroughs since I’ve been absolutely loving magneto!
You make a good point for the armor! I can definitely see the value in it. Personally i would prefer Heroic Intuition’s flat +2 more, and i don’t even include that in my Justice Magneto build. That being said i can see how building around its consistency makes it better, i wouldn’t be against moving it higher :)
I think it's only the 2nd activation each turn that gets his bonus since you would have to use your first activation before doing magnetic pull to ready from the cape.
It is definitely interesting that you still rate him as an S-tier despite so many of his cards being situational. I'm keen to play him myself and see if the extra draw and economy really elevates him all the way to S-tier (my intuition being that he would be A tier overall, for the record)
That’s totally fair. I would compare him to Captain Marvel who also has a high economy ability in AE and generally bad cards all around but most people would say she’s A or S tier. I think Magneto is stronger since his cards are better but also the hero ability +1 card is better than AE having it due to some scenarios not allowing the player to flip
I wouldn't say you were overly harsh in your evaluation of these cards, but your arguments definitely betrayed your solo-player mindset. In multiplayer (especially 4 player), many of these cards are much more relevant and useful. Having said that I totally agree on your assessment of "Metal Shards", it's a big hit that you want to put on the Villain, but then most likely you don't get the Tough, or you most likely end up wasting some damage taking out a minion to get the Tough. It's costed as if you get 7 damage AND a Tough, but in reality, it's more like 7 damage OR a Tough. Anyway, enjoyed the video.
Hey Professorkid! That’s a really good point that i should’ve touched note on. All of Magneto’s “situational” cards all become less situational in multiplayer where there are more chances to see different situations simultaneously due to getting more encounter cards. Really good point! And yea i wish Metal Shards had piercing on it. That would make it worthwhile 👌🏻
Playing him just felt like player a Hero whose kit doesn’t work together. He wants minions to use two of his cards, but he can’t summon them with his own cards. He wants to flip down to regain cards, but he can’t confuse the villain. He wants to dictate or see his deck to benefit from his armour, but he can’t. He has two double resources, a resource generator and an ability to get an extra card, but his cards aren’t actually that expensive. He’d have massively benefitted from losing those two resource cards (as good as they are) and having an extra copy of both Electromagnetic Blast and Metal Shards or new cards altogether. To add on, deft focus helps reduce the cost of most of his kit 😬 and that’s in his precon! Aspect cards can help, but they should enhance parts of his kit, not be needed to make it work.
Fair point. That’s actually how i feel about Gambit, but Magneto runs more smoothly to me mainly because of the cape rounding everything out with an additional ready to help thwart/attack/recover based on the style you’re playing him in. I’ve had a similar experience with his double resources so i agree to an extent.
Go show Ziggy some love and check out his video series where he ranks hero cards: www.youtube.com/@ZiggyZ55Z

@@webwarriorfanatic Running helicarrier too! Pretty much always run it in multi games, since its never a dead card with more players!
