Honestly, when I hear his story and what he had to go through. It hurts that he never got the fame when he was alive and dealt with a harmful disorder. I'm so glad that his art has survived and that they will be a reminder of his struggles and love in life.
I've never wished an episode of "Dr. Who" was actually real as the one where he brings Van Gogh into the future to see just how much of a legend he became. One of the very very few things that I shead tears watching.
I swear if time travel ever does become a thing (which I know it won’t) I would do exactly that. Bring him to a gallery or exhibit and show him what an icon he became for young artist.
Same most artist that we look up to from that era were horrible people (mainly wife beaters) instead Vincent was seems to be a truly kind man who struggled and lost his battles to mental illness :(
This just shows you how absolutely not a joke depression is. The downward spiral takes you down intensely and fast. Vincent had family that loved him yet his mindset was still in a "I'm a complete burden to everyone around me". I can empathize with him since this was my mindset grow-up and attempted his solution to his problem as it was mine. You can still feel alone even when surrounded by people, you can still have an outlet to express yourself but yet still have these intrusive thoughts. Depression is no joke and it never was.
In the 1800's mental illness didn't exist, (well maybe in society's standards) it's pretty sad that he have to live this for a long. May he rest in peace.
But to this day his death hasn’t necessarily been confirmed. Whether it was suicide or him being accidentally shot by teenage bullies, it’s still sad nonetheless tho.
Honestly if the accidental shooting story is true it is even more upsetting, because if it is he most likely covered for the teenagers, making sure they didn’t get in trouble for his death and took the blame for them even when dying. How heartbreaking
What happened to Vincent always makes me sad since I can relate to the fear of abandonment, constanly failing over and over again, and just wanting ppl to recognize my artistic talent. Looking forward to part 2! Keep up the good work Thumin!
it was actually never confirmed that he killed himself - that's just what a lot of people say happened. there's pretty solid evidence that he was accidentally shot by some teenagers, and he just said he shot himself to protect them.
@@devilheartcandy he didn't die immediately, and the other people were kids he knew who likely didn't mean to shoot him - that's part of why people think he didn't try to kill himself. he wasn't shot in the head, he was shot in the stomach. why would he shoot himself in the stomach to kill himself? he had enough time to *insist* he had shot himself before he passed away, but he actually was strongly against the idea of killing himself before then.
@@devilheartcandy Another question is if he did shot himself who would have given him a gun!!! He was a strange foreigner only known to be crazy and with one ear cut off by himself. He only lived in Auvers for two months before he was shot. Almost nobody even owned a gun at that time in France. Who in their sane mind would have lend their gun to a complete and crazy stranger with a cut off ear???
I feel really bad about Vincent Van Gogh. Is not just a great artist but another legend that we still going to remember him and his artistic legacy to this day. Really nice video Thumin, as always!
In my country, art history is really talked about, in fact it's a taught subject at school. I've always loved his paintings, since i learned about him, but they have such a tragic story. Also, interesting fact: somehow, The Starry Night looks similar to Kolmogorov's model that sheds light on the turbulent flow in fluid dynamics, which is one of the most complicated subjects for the human brain to comprehend. And he also painted the Celestial bodies proportionally far. Wow. Seems like he was also a really excellent stargazer! Also, i really reccomend "Loving, Vincent".
Same I grew up in Italy and depending on if we were good or not our art teacher would either let us paint or open the boring books to learn ancient or contemporary art history
Strong recommendation. There’s a movie called Loving Vincent. It’s beautiful and made completely from oil paintings… people made a movie from oil paintings… painted EVERY SINGLE FRAME
Van Gogh has always been my favorite artist and still very much is, not just in his work but in the journey he went through with his struggles with depression, psychosis and feeling like he failed in his craft. He deserved so much more than what his lifetime gave him
Van Gogh is my most favorite artist who i look up to not because of his art but as a person with mental illness and religion. I consider him as one of the greats! R.I.P.
Most importantly he never gave up on the thing he loved the most out of all things in this world and left his masterpieces for us to cherish his art and grieve on his tragic state.
Van Gogh is an inspiration to me. I love learning about him and his work, I love the look of his art, and he is kind of a mini obsession of mine. Also if you guys do really like him, I suggest you check out the small musical, Starry, about him, his brother and their closest relations. Right now, it’s just a concept album but the songs are gorgeous and i sob every time. Plus it has Jeff Blim from Starkid Productions in it.
I just went to an immersive exhibition of his works, where animated versions of his paintings were projected onto the walls of a giant room. While I think it's sad that he's primarily remembered for being a "tortured artist" (I have a lot of empathy for those sorts of people, whose art is primarily attributed to their suffering, even if the reality was more complicated), it was wonderful to see how appreciated he is today.
when i was in high school, around grade 9-10 (freshman-sophomore), i was horribly depressed (still am but doing better) and my mother showed me a dr. who episode about vincent van gogh. it was an absolutely beautiful episode. ((spoilers)) it started with them in a restaurant, like the one van gogh had painted, and talked about his struggles with mental illness. at the end, the doctor shows him the museum in amsterdam, showing him that his art would eventually be recognized throughout the entire world, and that his work didn’t go to waste. he’s one of my fav historical artists, and i own a bunch of items with ‘starry night’ on them, including the sticker on my laptop. :)
If someone wants to learn more, there's a movie I watched at the end of the year in art class. It was made with the help of 100+ artists who painted each and every frame like stop motion in Van Gogh's style. It talks about his death very well, but the only problem is I'm not sure of the name or if it's been translated into English. Edit: many thanks to zasshoes for the name of the movie, it is called "Loving Vincent"
I was lucky to visit the Vincent van Gogh museum last year while I was in the Netherlands. He's one of my most favourite artists. When I saw the sunflowers paintings. I started crying. Never thought I would ever see any of his paintings. Seeing his art in person is something amazing
I remember a day i had read a biography of him, and I was really sad that he had such a tragic and difficult life, and my dad said to me: do you know what would make him happy? Enjoy and study about his art, it would make him happy and proud
This is a really good and educational video! I never knew Van Gough lived such a hard life! It's really sad, but I'm glad he did eventually get recognition for his talent, even if he wasn't around to see it.
Vincent Van Gogh story is just so sad...I can't help but feel so bad for him. I love he's paintings so much, He should have been more appreciated back then 😔
Can't wait for part 2, I'm tired of mental disorders & struggles being both stigmatized and glamourized, having them doesn't make us monsters or "inspiring".
I'm Dutch and I find it very cool that you pronounced his name how the Dutch do. I learnt about Van Gogh when I was 6 and liked his style from the beginning. When I was a child I made a painting on numbers of one of his paintings (the one shown at 7:35). I've learnt about his story since I was a child, but started to understand it when I was older.
