For real, I was like “I’ve seen the trailer for the season….. I know she’s in the next episode so she can’t actually die here”……. But I didn’t 100% believe that they weren’t going to do the switcheroo and have the fake Donna be her going forward
these are the kind of episodes that show why dr who became as popular as it did, just 2 actors killing it for an entire episode with an interesting plot that slowly unravels throughout the episode, and it’s nice to see the dr completely stumped
This was the most legitimate nightmare fuel since Midnight. And you're right, the 'silly' balanced the cosmic horror, but it still held that feeling of being caught in a nightmare. I loved it. PS - you two, and your evident love for the show? You've just got a new subscriber xx
It had that specific "cant run fast enough" and "my body isnt listening to me" type of nightmare horror that I believe everyone has experienced atleast once
Afraid to say that Russell T Davies posted shortly after this episode aired, Bernard cribbins only managed to film this scene before he passed, so as far as I know, he isnt in next weeks episode....so sad 😥
Man, what a fantastic episode! Doctor Who is clearly going back to its roots with Russell, even the CGI, even the cheesier CGI made me feel 'at home,' if you know what I mean... It had a bit of a Midnight vibe, terrifying with that constant feeling of helplessness... The scene with Donna being left behind hurt my heart! Speaking of the heart, seeing Wilfred so affectionate and cute waiting for Donna, and that look towards the Doctor, MY GOD! I cried buckets!!
This was such a stellar episode with great performances by Tennant and Tate, and the kind of writing and Midnight-ish elements that's been absent for quite a while. And seeing Bernard Cribbins return as Wilf was such a moment of pure joy, however brief.
I loved that this felt like a classic Doctor Donna episode. It felt (fittingly) like a time machine to a decade ago when I tuned in for every episode and it was my favorite show. No gimmicks. No cameos. Just great Doctor and Donna saving the universe.
I think it's so sweet and telling that even after how long it's been, even with how things went the last time Wilf saw the Doctor, he sees something going wrong he can't explain and he immediately has Faith the Doctor can and will put it right.
Last time I so thoroughly enjoyed a episode was World Enough in Time/The Doctor Falls. Loved every moment and the scene where The Doctor and Donna talk about The Timeless Child/The Flux was my favorite part of the episode.
Unfortunately guys that ended up being Bernard Cribbins last scene with David Tennant, as he passed away shortly afterwards, am just glad that they got one last scene together. That episode was certainly wild!!.🇬🇧
@@mrcritical6751 Russell confirmed on Instagram that the scene with Bernard at the end of Wild Blue Yonder was the only one they managed to film as he was too unwell to do more scenes. So I think they kept it in as it was his last thing he filmed and because RTD wanted to have a love letter to Bernard one last time.
i think the thing I'm most OBSESSED with from this episode is the fact that they used ACTUAL PROSTHETICS for the majority of the part where the monsters are trying to figure out how long their arms are supposed to be
Sadly RTD confirmed that that last scene was the only scene Bernard Cribbins was able to film. He will be mentioned next week but this is the last time we will ever see him. Sad but I'm glad that he got to film the reunion before he died. R.I.P. ❤️❤️
A great episode and a great tribute. Particularly for a generation of Brits - this is going to sound condescending - who spent a large part of their upbringing hearing Cribbens or watching him in comedy or drama or (perhaps most pertinently for this show in its original format) children's TV. It was like losing your own grandfather.
This isn't a spoiler it's just to make you reduce expectations... it has been confirmed we won't see wilf again. That's all they could film. Sad... But bittersweet thar we got what we got
I loved the cosmic horror of the episode and that they didnt just throw away the conflict of the Flux, amazing episode, but specially from all that, the best part is be able to see Wilfred happy to reunite with the Doctor again, i love this man, my favourite character of all the show 😍💕
I can say this... the 13th incarnation (well 14th cause War face, well 15th... cause 10th had vanity issue... well Jodie's Doctor) have been through a lot. I mean all of them have, but when she had that face, she found out that her origin isn't what it seems as well as being responsible for wiping half of the universe... Jeez, the Doctor really can't catch a break... also... this episode is intense and I love it~
That final scene with Wilf sadly seeing the Doctor one last time was heartbreaking. It was planned that he would have a larger part in the final, but it wasn’t to be 💔💔
I loved this episode. Gave me some crazy Midnight vibes which is 100% ok with me. For a minute there, I wasn’t entirely sure that it wasn’t the same entity from Midnight back for more. Literally formless entities from the darkness beyond the edge of space…… classic Doctor Who nightmare fuel.
RTD is typically known for either campy comedy or gut-wrenching emotional drama, so it's nice to see that between this and Midnight, he can also really excel in nightmarish Lovecraftian horror
I don't know if it's intentional or not but Donna refers to the doctor snapping his fingers to summon the Tardis which was a thing later incarnations of the doctor did instead of 10, but then later says she doesn't remember anything about what the doctor did after they separated which sort of implies to me that she does but isn't saying it to protect the doctor
He did snap his fingers in that one episode, but it was part of a subplot where River tells him he can and he tries it once at the end. It’s 11 that actually uses that skill so I’d be assuming Donna doesn’t know it’s a thing he can do or if she does it was likely a once off thing he never used again.
Hats off to Tennant and Tate for their outstanding performances, as well as to director Tom Kingsley for such a great episode. The only thing that worries me at this point is that the specials will in hindsight feel like the giant carrot dangled in front of fans of the Tenth Doctor, purely to get them interested in the show again. I have faith that Russell T Davies generally knows what the show needs to be successful (although his posturing over the recent depiction of Davros was an awkwardly unnecessary misstep), I just hope that it won't feel like a massive tonal shift once Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor takes over.
Okay, theory: Did anyone notice that Wild Blue Yonder had a theme of doubles, or just things in general, existing incongruously of each other? Beyond the obvious main plot point with the doppelgangers, there was also these: * The "gravity" vs. "mavity" gag (I'll get to this more in a minute, because this ties into where I think the story is going) * The moment with the doppelganger Donna not knowing if people have two knees or two knees on both legs * The "when something is removed it remains" moment * The moment about how Donna thinks two contradictory things about herself at once * And the most important one probably: the moment with the salt, superstition, and the entire thing about how "two things can be true at once" The Doctor comments near the end of the episode about his worry about the salt thing. As he said, it happened at the edge of the universe, where the rules of logic have no meaning, so it could have far reaching consequences. So, theory: this is Doctor Who setting up the future of the show as having a loose canon, where multiple things can exist at the same time, and canon can contradict itself. This has been the ethos of the show forever, and it's the thing everyone repeats: Doctor Who has no "canon". This is them setting that up, and creating an actual in-universe explanation for it. Going further into that, they are not going to have a traditional regeneration this time. I believe there's a leak that claims that this regeneration is going to be a split one between 14 and 15. I'll go one step further: this upcoming regeneration is going to set up the entire Whoiverse, by splitting off the Doctor Who world in separate canons. This ties into the thing with "gravity vs. mavity". It's basically them establishing that multiple ideas can exist at once, and be flipped between. People are complaining about how this entire part with Issac Newton felt useless, but I think it's supposed to tie into the overall gimmick they're gonna be going for here; the entire Doctor Who universe is basically gonna become a big schrodinger's cat toy-box. Going further into this, the Toy Maker is probably trying to control peoples fates, and the way that he gets defeated is by completely severing the threads, so that there's no "fates" to be controlled. Basically, they're going to have every single Doctor exists at once. I don't know how they're gonna manage that; either the show is going to become continuously multi-Doctor, which I doubt, or (the more likely option) they're going to have 15 as the Doctor on the main show, and this is going to be a set up for spin-offs with other Doctors and their companions to be endlessly possible, and not restricted by canonical restraint.
Or... get this... they're acknowledging AGAIN that all the current multimedia stories out there really are all "canon," and that you shouldn't just assume only the show is, and they're hoping the people who refused to get that the first few times will finally get it.
When you go back in time. (With Sir Isaac Newton) and you change the word; Gravity in Mavity... Maybe you changed the timeline and that's why the world went crazy at the end of the episode? DONNA HAS NEVER HEARD NEWTON SAY: MAVITY AND SHE SAYS MAVITY LIKE IT IS NORMAL. It is maybe changed?
I've heard this theory too. Explains why the whole Meep thing was a little silly and cheesy and the super weird versions of doctor and Donna/mavity was a bit silly too. Could be his doing! Really hope it all ties back to him!
I think while this special lacked any cameos it has a lot of continuity to the series, not just with the obvious references but little things like the Tardis translation, whistling to get the Tardis back, etc.
Not wanting to spoil anything but Wilf will now only be "referenced" in the 3rd special. RTD put out a post concerning this and if I wasn't already in tears when the end of the episode happened, Unleashed finished me off over the whole Bernard scene. Bernard, you will be sorely missed. From when he first stepped into the Tardis during the film, Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. to his re-entry with 10 and 14, he was an amazing addition to the whoniverse.
When my bf and I first watched this and the scene where the *not others* were growing and filling the space, I turned to my bf and said "Omg, they're Titans!"
RTD has spoken about Bernard Cribbins and that he passed shortly after filming Wild Blue Yonder, so I would temper your expectations for seeing a lot of Wilf next week.
How Doctor Who made Wifreds appearance at the end a surprise even though we all knew he was gonna be there somewhere is amazing. Wondered if the salt was a reference to "The Unicorn and the Wasp" episode. Also, I think this episode would look cool animated in a Studio Ghibli style.
Definitely a cross between Event Horizon and that Sandra Bullock film, Mavity! Tone wise a bit off (funny / seriously scary) but definitely a great episode (Rewatched the Paul McGann 1996 movie last night. Still think it's got the best theme tune lol)
Unfortunately Wilf was supposed to be in the third part but Bernard Cribbins was only able to film this scene before he passed away. It's sad but I'm glad we at least got this as opposed to never seeing him again
And right on cue, some people are already throwing hissy fit for "race-swapping" Isaac Newton and calling Doctor Who a "woke garbage." Some people don't have anything better to do.
what he meant by million years thats how long its been for him not 15 years like with donnor put that into prospective thats how i think hes different from the 10th doctor got the same face but different personality hes not guilt ridden from the time war anymore.
i loved this episode...AMAZING. Scary as hell but like you both said its scary that works with Doctor Who. I watched this yesterday but had to watch your vid about the 2nd episode. Love watching your reactions and i cannot wait to see next weeks episode. Love your vids from Ontario Canada
Loved this episode, the mimics to me reminded me of the entity out of the episode Midnight they semed to be the physical manifestation of the entity that infected Sky, Wilf returning at the end brought me and my sister to tears
Love your Doctor Who reactions but Ahem! Regarding Bernard Cribbins, his first name is not pronounced Ber-NARD, he's BER-nud, go see the making of video for this episode and RTD talking about him with huge affection, on behalf of many of us Brits. Bernard Cribbins was a national treasure appearing in multiple children's tv shows over the decades, I heartily recommend a delightful 1970 family film The Railway Children, in which he plays an important role. We absolutely adored him and miss him enormously. Keep up the good work, much appreciated! 👍
"Mavity"? Wonder if that's going to come back? We got it what, three or four times this episode? If it was a Moffat joint we'd have the seeds for the whole season right there but RTD might just have been amusing himself and it won't come back at all. Same gag as in the "Children in Need" thing with the Doctor influencing stuff, though. 🤔
This was a great episode WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY better than the last one. I was worried for a sec there but if they finish with this quality I will be happy.
I loved that Episode, It was Weird and Creepy. That the Doctor choose the wrong Donna, didn't really got me worried but at the same time it did. THIS WOMAN IS NOT TO BE HARMED. And 14 is such an ass. The Lick Joke xD
I don't know if I'm the first with this "theory", but in the last scene of this episode, when we see Wilf, I'm not sure, if Bernard Cribbins actually knew that David Tennant was cast as the Doctor. I have a feeling, that what we see, was Bernard Cribbins genuine reaction, to finding out - or maybe it's just the mere sight of Tennant being Ten again, which actually overwhelmed me, back when we saw the regeneration from Jodie Whittakers 13th Doctor into the now 14th Doctor (which is, ofcourse, Tennant). 🥰🥰🥰
He knew. He was at the read through. And he'd been sent a script beforehand. And you will almost always meet the actors you're sharing a scene with before the first take.
I think you guys need to listen to The Magnus Archives. The big limbs and body oddities were scarier to me than the scary teeth just because they're so Stranger and I fucking HATE THE STRANGER

Loved it when the doctor chose the wrong Donna. Really appreciated the mavity of the situation.

The moment between The Doctor picking up Not-Donna, realising, then picking up the real Donna was probably the tensest DW scene I've ever witnessed
I just watched it an hour ago and I was already tensed up at that scene

I spent the first 20 minutes curious but once the alternative Doctor/ Donna showed it was brilliantly done. So very very scary
tbh for me the cgi in those scenes kinda took me out of the tension of that

RIP Bernard. Beloved by so many for so long. ❤️
this episode honestly might be my new fav of all time. it’s at least definitely top 3.
What a blast! These “specials” are a whole new level of fan service. For “3”, I’m going to do the watch along with y’all for sure! 💙
This was my favourite Doctor Who episode in a long time...brilliantly creepy, and it was just so wonderful seeing Bernard at the end.
If seeing Wilf doesn’t make one get weepy… so bittersweet. 🥹🥺
Love your eyeshadow color choices, Vanessa.
Hats off to Tennant and Tate for their outstanding performances, as well as to director Tom Kingsley for such a great episode. The Fourth Doctor mentioned climbing a tree and dropping an apple on Isaac Newton's head.
Maybe he needed a couple knocks on the head to get the message? 😉
I feel this all the Toymaker's meddling.
I couldnt help but laugh at the "ITS GETTING COLDER....AND THE CAMERA ANGLE IS GOING DUTCH..."
Okay, theory: Did anyone notice that Wild Blue Yonder had a theme of doubles, or just things in general, existing incongruously of each other? Beyond the obvious main plot point with the doppelgangers, there was also these:
* The "gravity" vs. "mavity" gag (I'll get to this more in a minute, because this ties into where I think the story is going)
* The moment with the doppelganger Donna not knowing if people have two knees or two knees on both legs
* The "when something is removed it remains" moment
* The moment about how Donna thinks two contradictory things about herself at once
* And the most important one probably: the moment with the salt, superstition, and the entire thing about how "two things can be true at once"
The Doctor comments near the end of the episode about his worry about the salt thing.
This is them setting that up, and creating an actual in-universe explanation for it.

what he meant by million years thats how long its been for him not 15 years like with donnor put that into prospective thats how i think hes different from the 10th doctor got the same face but different personality hes not guilt ridden from the time war anymore.
They probably should go back to Newton or change the word in every book to gravity again.
Episode was so much better than the last one I loved this
That's Donna code for I lied
Love your channel. Best nail biter episode ever. Yelling to the Doctor no wrong Donna. Loved Wilfred.
i loved this episode...AMAZING. Scary as hell but like you both said its scary that works with Doctor Who. I watched this yesterday but had to watch your vid about the 2nd episode. Love watching your reactions and i cannot wait to see next weeks episode. Love your vids from Ontario Canada
Sadly, Bernard Cribbins won’t be in the third episode. RTD said this was the only scene that he got to film.
Ive seen a interview with Russell T Davies and he seem to say that's the only time we see Wilf( Bernard Cribbins) i hope im wrong.
OBSESSED with the Hollywood shirt...
Loved this episode, the mimics to me reminded me of the entity out of the episode Midnight they semed to be the physical manifestation of the entity that infected Sky, Wilf returning at the end brought me and my sister to tears
Many thanks to Robert & Vanessa! ⏳ I wonder how long the "mavity" gag will continue?
So much joy seeing Wilf again!!! 🥹🥹🥹
This episode was amazing, anxiety inducing but amazing !
The BBC and doctor who said it's Bernard Cribbins (wilf) scene, he a wonderful actor if look at his career he was everyone grandad
This was some creepy shit ..loved it ❤️🔥🔥🔥
Well played to Tate and Tennant excellent Episode and lovely to see Bernard R.I.P
Doctor left the sonic and tardis behind the door for this ep
It's like the Zygons all over again... Except a lot more creepy.. :)
You might also like the film PANDORUM (better on second viewing).
I love your reactions - almost as much as I LOVE the HOLLYWOOD t-shirt!!! 😎
Love the Hollywood montrose shirt
This was a great episode WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY better than the last one. I was worried for a sec there but if they finish with this quality I will be happy.
in UK Bernard is pronounced Bernurd not Bernaaard. Just saying. Loved your reaction.
I loved that Episode, It was Weird and Creepy. That the Doctor choose the wrong Donna, didn't really got me worried but at the same time it did. THIS WOMAN IS NOT TO BE HARMED.
And 14 is such an ass. The Lick Joke xD
Totally awesome! I loved it….back to great Doctor Who.
I'm pretty sure the salt was in reference to the doctor being poisoned in the unicorn and the wasp when he needed something salty?
Salt's a traditional magical defense against unsavory beasties and things that go bump in the night, but it could be both things.
And going by the trouble he had in that episode telling Donna what he needed, perhaps that's why he's now carrying salt around with him!
And you will almost always meet the actors you're sharing a scene with before the first take.
it is called acting my guy lol
I think you guys need to listen to The Magnus Archives. The big limbs and body oddities were scarier to me than the scary teeth just because they're so Stranger and I fucking HATE THE STRANGER
It would be great to see a not for kids episode of Doctor Who on post 9pm where they could do more proper scary monster stuff!
