  • In this video i show how to use a tiller or rotavator, this includes how to start the tiller engine and how to control the tiller to work properly. tilling the soil with a cultivator is easy enough once you get going but i hope this video helps if you havent used one before.

I've never used a rotavator but it's handy to know, I'll bet the chickens love getting in there afterwards.

Great video, way better than the instructions given to me by the hire company, they should get you to make instructional videos on how to use their hire equipment

But how would it actually work on clay soil, such as what we have in London? You made it look easy.

If it's a heavily compacted clay, you may need to go over the area a few times to get the desired results. If it's really tough, you may need to break the surface with a spade/pickaxe beforehand. It's totally doable, it can just take a bit more effort to initially break through the surface. You can also water the ground a few times in the days before rotavating. This will soften the ground, but don't overdo it, as it's not much fun if it becomes a muddy mess. Be patient and you'll get it done :)

Thank you, that was helpful. Short, sweet and exactly what I wanted to know ( which was how to adjust the depth.- Seems like you can't really.

You ought to see the job a BCS740 would do, I scoff at your attempt...Still the starting procedure seemed pretty universal.

I have one of these and that’s about all it did .I thought there was a problem with the engine .Maybe that’s all the power they have .I thought it would basically plough the garden for planting new veg .

I take it the soil would need to be cleared of all rocks and debris etc before going at it with this? Dodgy builder left a total mess of our back garden full of rubble etc and i was hoping to use this to help levelling it

It will defo be better to be cleared soil but it will work with small rock in the soil still I believe

Cover the grass with a thick layer of cardboard/paper or something that'll exclude all light, for about 3 months first. Or spray it off with glyphosphate. Both will make subsequent cultivations easier. You'll have plenty of chafer grubs, leather jackets and eel worms in that post lawn patch, so don't both with root crops for the first few years.

Theres a reason this movement looks shabby mate their supposed to be pulled back the way not pushed forward . When their pushed forward they bounce all over the place like in this video pulled bakc the way their easy to control n get a much cleaner even end product

Would the rotavator go through membrane that had been laid over the garden and been lost to the weeds?
