Daniel 2 & Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream Explained

- What’s so amazing about King Nebuchadnezzar’s dream recorded in Daniel chapter 2 is that even though it was recorded about 2600 years ago, it has come to pass in stunning detail.
But… there is one more major aspect still to come.
So stick around to the end, because we’ll not only explain the details that have already come to pass but also why this prophecy is relevant for us now. And we’ll do it straight from the pages of the Bible.
Chapter 2 of the book of Daniel records a dream King Nebuchadnezzar had in the second year of his reign.
It not only records the dream, but it also gives the interpretation.
And what is so amazing about this, is that even though it was recorded about 2600 years ago, it has come to pass in stunning detail.
But… there is one more major aspect still to come. So stick around to the end, because we’ll explain why this prophecy is so important for us today.
So, here’s the story
Nebuchadnezzar was one of the most famous kings of ancient Babylon.
Around 603 BC he had a troubling dream that he wanted to be interpreted by his counselors, who included his magicians, astrologers, and sorcerers.
But… he not only wanted them to give the interpretation, he wanted them to first describe the dream and then give the interpretation.
He knew he could trust the interpretation if the counselors were able to tell him his dream without revealing it to them first.
Of course, none of his counselors could do this. So, he pronounced the death penalty on all the wise men in Babylon.
However, when Daniel the prophet was approached about the matter, he prayed to God and asked for insight, knowing God was able to tell the dream and its interpretation.
So, here is the dream, then we’ll see the interpretation:
In verse 28 Daniel explains “...there is a God in heaven who reveals secrets, and He has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will be in the latter days. Your dream, and the visions of your head… were these:
You… were watching; and behold, a great image! This great image, whose splendor was excellent, stood before you; and its form was awesome. This image’s head was of… gold, its chest and arms of silver, its belly and thighs of bronze, its legs of iron, its feet partly of iron and partly of clay. You watched while a stone was cut out without hands, which struck the image on its feet of iron and clay, and broke them in pieces. Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold were crushed together, and became like chaff… the wind carried them away so that no trace of them was found. And the stone that struck the image became a great mountain and filled the whole earth. This is the dream.” (Daniel 2:28-36)
Daniel continues in verse 36:
“Now we will tell the interpretation of it... You, O king, are a king of kings. For the God of heaven has given you a kingdom, power, strength, and glory… [He] has made you ruler over… all-you are this head of gold. But after you shall arise another kingdom inferior to yours; then… a third kingdom of bronze, which shall rule over all the earth. And the fourth kingdom shall be as strong as iron, inasmuch as iron breaks in pieces and shatters everything; and like iron that crushes, that kingdom will break in pieces and crush all the others. Whereas you saw the feet and toes, partly of potter’s clay and partly of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; yet the strength of the iron shall be in it... so the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly fragile. As you saw iron mixed with ceramic clay, they will mingle with the seed of men; but they will not adhere to one another, just as iron does not mix with clay. And in the days of these kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed… it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever. Inasmuch as you saw that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold-the great God has made known to the king what will come to pass after this. The dream is certain, and its interpretation is sure.” (v. 36 - 45)
Now, let’s break it down and examine who these world-ruling kingdoms were.
So, the first section of the statue in Nebuchadnezzar’s dream, the head of gold, we are explicitly told represented Nebuchadnezzar’s kingdom. That was the Neo-Babylonian empire, otherwise known as the Chaldean Empire (from 626-539 BC).
Now, for the remaining kingdoms, we’re not explicitly told in chapter two who they were, but chapters 5 through 8, as well as the book of Revelation, give more insight.
So, we’ll let the Bible interpret the Bible and use these other chapters to find the answer.
The second section of the statue, the chest and arms of silver, pointed to the next world ruling empire on the world scene. That was the empire of the Medes and Persians (ruling from 558 BC to 330 BC). We know this both from history and the Bible.
*(Forgive the length of the following post, but in it you will find the traditional view of Daniel 2 that has been held since the time of the early church)*
There are a couple of things which many of you might agree with. First of all the Kingdom of God is a spiritual kingdom. We enter into this kingdom by being spiritually born into it. John 3:5 _Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is _*_born_*_ of water and _*_the Spirit, he cannot enter the KINGDOM of GOD"_* In verse 8 Jesus states _"The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is _*_born of the Spirit”_* . So Christ’s kingdom advances through the gospel via the Spirit. In this sense the Kingdom is "made without hands", through changed hearts born of Spirit. This is how God's Kingdom conquers others.
Secondly, Jesus spoke more about the kingdom of God than any other topic, and it came when He arrived. Christ Himself said it was at hand when He arrived. *_"The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand_* (Mark 1:14). And Mat 12:28 _"But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, _*_then the kingdom of God has come upon you"_* .
Dan 2:44 tells us _"And in the days of _*_those kings_*_ the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed"_ . *The focal point of the Daniel 2's vision is of the timing of the arriving of the Kingdom of God* . This is when Christ would arrive.. The Kingdom arrives as a stone which strikes the 4th Kingdom when it is mixed with His people. The four kingdoms described in Daniel 2 never ruled over the entire globe, but they all at one time or another ruled over Israel, the covenant people of God.
The mixture of iron and clay is a picture of the kingdom of Rome, where the Jews had partial rule in their own land, but under the yoke of Rome. (A quick study of "Clay" in the Bible reveals that it refers to God's people, often in terms of the potter and the clay). In fact verse 41 tells us this plainly. v41 _"And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, _*_part of potters' clay_*_ , and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron"_
And as iron does not mix with clay, there was much upheaval at this time between Judah and Rome. *So this iron mixed with clay is the ROMAN/JEWISH relationship* which was always strained.
The ten toes represent the first ten kings of the Roman Empire. This is what is referred to as the “days of these kings”. During the first ten kings of the Roman Empire, the Jews still had a strong influence on the land, and they were in constant conflict with Rome. During the time of the tenth king (Emperor Vespasian) Rome invaded and destroyed Jerusalem and her temple in AD70. Thus that mixture in the feet is no more. That part of the statue is also gone, just as the Roman Empire is gone, crushed to dust by God's Kingdom which grows and fills the whole earth.
The Kingdom of God started out small with only a handful of disciples, and later, there were the 120 in the upper room. Like a small mustard seed it quickly grew by the thousands in short order, and now it has grown to numbers into the millions (perhaps billions) which have gone out into all the world to fill it. And Christ's Kingdom will destroy current and future kingdoms as well as it advances. We are told this in 1 Cor 15:24 _"Then comes the end, when he delivers the _*_kingdom_*_ to God the Father _*_after destroying every rule and every authority and power"_* . And again, Daniel 2:44 tells us this will indeed be the case. _And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, _*_but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever"_* .
While all of this may seem like quite different view to consider, we know that the struggle between darkness and light often ebbs and flows, but slowly righteousness takes more and more ground, and has done so since Christ set up the Kingdom. The world is a very different place than it was 2000 years ago. Christians were used as human torches by the Romans without any outcry from the citizens. Yet if something like that happens anywhere in the world today there is immediate outcry, even from the heathen. Slavery has been exposed and outlawed in much of the world, and those who practice it now do it undercover and are at risk of imprisonment. Cannibalism was the norm in Fijian Islands, but when the Christian missionaries began arriving in the 1830s the Fijians turned away from the practice and to worship Christ, and the last known act of cannibalism occurred in 1867. So in a period of 35 years this awful practice was abated and destroyed, and Fiji is one of the most Christianized countries in the world today.
Of course there is much more to conquer, but Christ's kingdom has come and His will is being done. We need not preach fear but rather victory, for Christ is victorious!
One part you missed, the HRE evolved from the old empire(clay/iron = Church/State).

Outstanding video and description of the book of Daniel and "The Dream" I have read the books "Agents of Babylon" and "The Hand Writing on the Wall" very good readings. This video breaks all of this down in much more detail and explains what is left to come from the prophecy. We are living in extraordinary times and I can't wait to see the end. I.E. The return of the true KING!
I am just trying my best to learn about 10 days into learn about Daniel in revelation. I am in my 60s and I never understood it so I didn’t read it just read through it sometime. I am welcome any opportunity to understand it. Thank you.

Nebuchadnezzars' dream is about tracking lost Israel not about pagan kingdoms. God told Nebuchadnezzars that the dream pointed to the last days when Israel's God would replace them all. The minister in this video fail to put the sequences in the dream involving 7 heads and ten horns together to add to 666. If you don't put the timeliness together correctly, the entire thing breaks down. Let me show you the right and only way to put the heads and horns together to reach 666.

It always amazes me how Daniel was given a glimpse of events for centuries to come, some of them are yet to come. He literally saw the second coming of Christ.

Prophet Daniel didn't spoke of any revival of the fourth kingdom. Feet and toes of iron and clay refers to the late period of the Roman Empire.
By the end of the 4th century it had split into two, with the Western part ruling from Ravenna and the Eastern part ruling from Constantinople.
The Jewish commentary Artscroll Tanach acknowledges this historic division of the Roman empire as one of the possible interpretations of the prophecy:
*“The division of the kingdom may also refer to the split of the Roman empire into the Eastern (Byzantine) Empire, and the Western (Roman) Empire.*

This brings us onto the final part of Nebuchadnezzar’s dream which mentions the rock that will smash the statue into pieces:
*While you were watching, a rock was cut out, but not by human hands. It struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay and smashed them. Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver and the gold were all broken to pieces and became like chaff on a threshing floor in the summer. The wind swept them away without leaving a trace. But the rock that struck the statue became a huge mountain and filled the whole earth. [Daniel 2:34-35]*
Daniel interprets this portion of the dream as follows:
*In the time of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush all those kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure forever. This is the meaning of the vision of the rock cut out of a mountain, but not by human hands-a rock that broke the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver and the gold to pieces. The great God has shown the king what will take place in the future. The dream is true and its interpretation is trustworthy. [Daniel 2:44-45]*
We can see that the rock in Nebuchadnezzar’s dream is interpreted by Daniel to be a fifth kingdom. Note the key characteristics of this coming kingdom:
1. It will emerge “in the time of those kings”. The coming kingdom will not appear at some distant and far-off time in the future but rather during a time when the kingdom before it is still in power.
2. The kingdoms which preceded it will be “crushed and bought to an end”. The coming kingdom will emerge as the new ruling power in the world.
Historically it is only Islam which fulfils all these characteristics of the rock. As the the 7th century saw the emergence of Islam as a force to be reckoned with. In the words of Daniel, Islam “crushed and brought to an end” the world empires at the time including the mighty Romans and Persians. The early Muslims defeated them in war, capturing many of their lands which remain under Muslim rule to this day. The Muslim Empire spread rapidly throughout the world and went on to become the greatest that the world had ever seen.@@praise220

These people are not answering all the questions concerning Nebuchadnezzars dream and exactly how each and every code combine each clue, it cannot e er fit sequentually into the whole biblical model of history. Unless you put every detail of 7 heads and ten horns into the correct sequences of World history, it will break down and never complete the right out come of 666. The above video fails to get the job done.

Where was ISLAM or the Muslim Empire who conquered Jerusalem for nearly 450 years (637 to 1099 A.D.) and built the famous Dome of the Rock where the destroyed 2nd Temple was previously laid, in the Prophecy of Daniel? ... while the Roman Empire conquered Jerusalem for more than 500 years (27 B.C. to 476 A.D.), almost the same "Span of Time" with Muslim Empire.

Christ Jesus was born in BETHLEHEM... which means the "House of Bread"... Christ Jesus is the "BREAD OF LIFE".... HE is also the "MANNA" that comes down from Heaven every morning to feed the Israelites during their EXODUS to the Promise Land... in which the descendant of Ishmael which are the ARABS did not experience having the "MANNA" for breakfast in the Wilderness...
That is why the Apostles of Christ did not do FASTING while Christ was still around with them, but when Christ Jesus ascended back to Heaven, the Apostles started their fasting/abstinence.
Christians do fasting/abstinence too, but the teaching of Christ says, "Do not do as the HEATHEN (Pagan) do, they make a "SHOW-OF" from what they do in PUBLIC."... When Christians fasted, we try to keep it a SECRET as possible, so that only the Father God sees and knows it... It is like giving ALMS to the needy or poor... Christ said, "Let your Left-hand not see, what your Righ-hand does." (metaphorically speaking)... do not show your kindness publicly like the Heathens/Pagans do... but rather, DISCREETLY (secretly cautious)...
We do not show our FACES to the crowd, very tired and so weary from fasting... it is like doing our own Personal Prayers to God, Christ said, we must go to a room where nobody sees us praying, only the Father God sees and knows... We do not do HYPOCRICY by showing to the crowd how we personally pray to God...
There is a Gathering Prayer (Group Prayer done in Churches) with other Believers and there is also the Individual Personal Intension Prayer that must be kept secret between us and God only...
Why Christians do not fast for 40 days and nights?... The first reason is Christ has done it only once, in the wilderness to be tested by Satan, and Christ Jesus passed the test as a MAN (Flesh)... Satan tested HIM as a Human being (weakness of the flesh such as hunger, thirst, etc) and not as a God being... The Second logical reason, we Christians do not want to duplicate/replicate/copycat what Christ has done/accomplished in the wilderness, for we are not the SAVIOR (Messiah/Christ)... Lastly, we do fasting and abstinence but we SELDOM show them to the public like most Muslims do... why?... because that is how CHRIST taught us, written in the Bible... Amen.

I like how Nebuchadnezzar saw this image as a great man. He was seeing it through Man's eyes. That all looks amazing and wonderful.
Later he had two other dreams. He saw these same kingdoms from God's perspective. They were all wild beasts.

You were doing pretty well with your exegesis of Daniel chapter 2, --- until you came to the legs and toes, then your prophetic "Cart" lost a wheel - and went careening off to left field somewhere!
However, your conclusion of the dream, being "certain, and the true interpretation - sure," will soon be accurately revealed - as the approach of the Living Stone Mountain Kingdom of Daniel chapter 2 verses 34-35, and 44-45, is properly interpreted.

Christ Jesus had fulfilled (past tense) all the Law of Moses/Mosaic (Torah) while HE was still in HIS mortal body/flesh, but when HE died on the cross and was RESURRECTED from the dead by God and was Ascended back to Heaven with God and now seated at the right side of God...
(Matt. 28:18/paraphrased)... "God gave all the POWER and AUTHORITY in Heaven and on Earth to HIS Son (Christ Jesus)." ... Amen.
Hbrews 8:7/paraphrased..." For if the 1st (OLD) Covenant LAW given by God to Moses had been found without FAULT (Insufficient/lack thereof), there would be no need for God to sought for the 2nd (NEW) Covenant LAW that was given to HIS Son (Christ Jesus)." ... Amen.

The global theocracy known as Roman Catholicism
The Lord has an interesting way of framing things prophetically, in such a way it keeps your attention from your youth to your senior years if you've been in the word that long but regardless of tenure, it keeps your attention.
When you start using apocalyptic language such as beasts, And harlots… this starts to propagate into something much grander.
The prophetic timeline from the time of 476 AD which is something we have to pay attention because this is the start of the “ time, times and half a time” Conveyed to by the angel of the Lord to Daniel as what worked out to be the what? the memory serves 1,240 years? that would take us from 476 AD to 1798 - - though the two dates in the prophetic timeline are definite, the math is suspect, LOL as far as memories are concerned…
What happened? In 476 ad Romulus was deposed, this left a vacancy for the metastasizing apostasy that crept across the street from the third-century Christian church, where at that point the Nicene Council was held not just a spot and utter a bunch of words and draw a hard line, there was a real threat eminent.
remember, Constantine II was the Emperor who took pity on Christians and reversed Trajan's exile and abolished Christians from the empire… this started with Nero and was upheld by every Emperor up until Diocletian, who doubled down on it, but he died, Constantinus [Constantine's II’s father] - Oddly enough, for Nero's excuse blaming all of the wrongs in society on Christians, they weren't around in the Roman people knew it, so it was like “who are they blaming?”
It would take Constantine II’s to cut Christians some slack, Historians have uncovered observations of his over the Millennia or so that attribute the behavior of Christians by and large to why he reversed Trajan's edict.
“I am having problems in every corner of my kingdom, save for these Christians, what is it about these Christians?” [Constantine II {paraphrased}]
What Constantine observed, is what all Christians are supposed to evoke when people rightly observe our Behavior dedicated to living peaceably and humbly before kings, emperors, leadership, and government, especially if it's not your government with the exception of here in America where it is our government as Christians this is our government and we're not stepping up to defend it, but our day is coming, but I digress… he saw the humility and sacrificial attitude, and Mistakenly must have taken Christians for pushovers and lackeys… because he just thought he was going to present his army to the third Century church and just have them just dip them in water, using the symbolism of baptism under some claim that he had some Anointed vision, with a symbol in it, but then when you investigate the symbol it goes all the way back to ancient Ba-al worship where that symbol comes from.
So, clearly, Constantine was in a mode to try to use Christians to fuse the kingdom together using the Optics of piety but the Leverage of government… figuratively speaking there's your miry clay mixed with iron.
The third Century Church Elders or having none of it, having now become somewhat popular in the kingdom, populism was the taint, and it still is to this day - there were approximately a half dozen 3rd Century Church Elders who were booted out of the third Century church for wanting to appease Constantine desire to merge feudal paganism in with bibliocentric Doctrine, they were having none of it.
so here's where Savvy comes in, back then you didn't have digital recorders or cameras… so the only way that you could claim to be the original, is you need to do have documentation - these are where the scrolls come into play.
And this is a very important detail to note, in those days there was the innovator and the imitator, the innovator was out first, anyone that followed you was - apostate. and this is the reasoning why scripture was canonized, there would have been no rational or cultural need to just suddenly up and spontaneously codify all of the Scrolls under one bibliography… unless, save for a clear and present threat.
that is where we got the sharp rejection of all errant philosophy, precepts, false doctrines and the hard line of the Nicean Creed ends up being what it is, because they were battling Against Time because they knew heresies and Heretics would follow soon thereafter.
This is why we have a Bible codified the way we do, all Guided by the Holy Spirit.

Now if you add the time, times, and half a Time that'll take you from 476 AD to 1798
there is something very unique that happened here, Napoleon had one of his generals March through Rome, and arrest the Pope and he put them in Exile until I believe 1806? This was “the deadly wound” because after this, the world changed, all of the European Empire bashing that was going on, the United States was growing, it was still in its infancy - the power to merely ad hominem legislate from the papal chair ended… and to a large extent it is still neutered to this day it's time is coming again - The Bible does repeat itself throughout history, Bible scholars and theologians Have debated for centuries nitpicking this or that, but what they always come to a conclusion on is the knowledge that the Roman Catholic theocracy is the subject of the little horn…

Only one future kingdom is mentioned in the book of Daniel, the kingdom of Greece. The word "Rome" or "Roman" is never mentioned. Why? It is a future kingdom too. Perhaps, the kingdom of legs of Iron and feet part of iron and part of clay IS NOT "Rome". If Rome was so important, it should have been mentioned in Daniel as one of the future kingdoms just like Greece was.

I have a question about verse 45 that I've not been able to find an answer to. When the composition of the statue is restated the materials are listed in a different order clay being moved over near silver and gold. This stood out to me as being significant especially seeing as how every word of God is pure. I've asked many people and search for an explanation but have not come up with anything. Any thoughts on the significance?

I'm not so sure of the common view that the iron is the Roman Empire. I believe it could very well be the Ottoman Empire. It ruled 900 years and recieved a deadly wound at the end of the first world war. Since then, Islam has made a miraculous recovery, with 10 countries (horns) in the middle east now. Their flags also happen to be white, black, red and green which also matches the colors of the 4 horseman in the first 4 seals. These countries also have kings. I could go on but you get the idea. From 7:00 onwards this interpretation falters. The 10 horns on the beast in Dan7:7 KJV do NOT represent 10 successive kingdoms. The 10 horns equate with the 10 toes in Dan2 and the 10 horns in Rev12 and Rev13 and the 10 kings in Rev17. And Dan2:44-45 KJV says “And in the days if these kings” is when Jesus shall return.

I very much like your creative imagery. However I would disagree with your four kingdoms. Daniel seem to reveal these four kingdoms as Babylon, Median, Persia and Greece. Having this little horn from chapters 7 and 8 interpretation as the one who made the abomination that cause desolate. This shown the little horn as Antiochus IV which stopped the daily sacrifice.
If the reader would follow consistently the book of Daniel reveals in chapters 2, 7,8,9,11and 12 all about the troubled time by Antiochus IV. Rome isnt in the vision here.

1.) The stone destroyed the whole statue in the latter days (Daniel 2:28).
2.) Jesus came in the last days (latter days) (Hebrews 1:1-2, Acts 2:16, Romans 13:11-12, 1 Corinthians 10:11, 1 Peter 4:7, James 5:7-9, 1 John 2:18, and Revelation 1:1-3)
3.) The fourth Beast was the Roman empire which just happens to be the time that the Messiah would come an establish his never-ending kingdom (no last days of a never-ending kingdom).
4.) Jesus himself confirmed that he was the stone that would destroy the statue (in the last days). Mathew 21:42-46 confirms that the Jews of Jesus’s day were the ones who be crushed by the stone.
If you Daniel foretold that the Messiah was to come during the Roman empire and:
the Messiah came during the Roman empire and taught that the end of the age (second coming) would be in the generation of his disciples. And:
All the apostles taught that the second coming would be in their lifetime (including the writer of Hebrews). Then I think we would be wise to believe them over the teachings of uninspired man.
The last days were the last days of the old covenant. There is not a single passage in the Bible that speaks of an end of time.
