    Totally agree about removal and grave hate. I can't tell you how many times a Tormods Crypt has destroyed someone in my play group.
    I think sometimes folks don't add removal because they are afraid of picking on another player. People can get focused on "I want to do my thing and not mess with other people's stuff" a bit too much IMO.

      You don't need grave hate. Graveyard players like myself just want to raise a family in peace. They may be a little decayed by the time we raise then, and it may be so that we can cheat big, ugly, win-the-game creatures, but it'll be fine. We promise.

    • @abbygaleforcewind
      @abbygaleforcewind ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @hunter I totally agree. I've been struggling with adapting to a new playgroup at the only LGS I have because they all want to do their own thing without anyone interacting with them. They get frustrated when I disrupt them *and* they get frustrated if I win because I used a "broken creature" which wouldn't have been broken if anyone had used a single removal spell in the three full turn cycles they had a chance to do so!

      @Hunter Gilbertson Whenever people ask me for deck suggestions, usually they have almost zero removal or interaction. I recommend adding some interaction, and the most common response is, "That's not fun." That statement can be taken in many contexts, but I think one of those is that removal carries with it the anxiety and pressure of using it correctly. Most players end up either throwing it at the first viable target (which often makes no difference in games) or never using it at all (which definitely feels useless) because they're not sure when the correct target comes along. It's not that they don't want to mess with other people's stuff, it's that not using removal correctly feels like removal is worthless and not "fun." So rather than have cards that sometimes do something, they'd rather just do their own thing.
      Or, that's my theory anyway.
       @johnny elkins I've been down this road. I started a combo arms race by trying to show people, "Look, this is why removal is important." Instead, they just tried to race a fairly tuned Karador deck (circa 2012/2013) and lost almost every game I was part of. They just tried to do their own thing better instead of adding removal. It's really silly.

    In terms of upping interaction: I think if you are in a playgroup that has settled into a low-interaction meta, you need to be careful if you start upping yours. You don’t want to be the only person who is running a good amount of interaction (especially in the form of counter spells) because you might become “the guy who doesn’t let anyone else play magic” and that leads to salt and people targeting you

    • @NitpickingNerds
      @NitpickingNerds  ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I think that if people are getting upset with you interaction that it is on them honestly. Magic would suck without interaction

    • @MrJkwatson23
      @MrJkwatson23 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@NitpickingNerds Definitely agree here. If your meta is low interaction, it really is just a "hey, look at my deck" showcase kind of meta, where no one stops someone when they are popping off.

      @@MrJkwatson23 and that is just boring IMO.

    • @JamesELLYale
      @JamesELLYale ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@MrJkwatson23 This 100%. I'm the player in my friend play group that has the most experience playing EDH, and I try to use running out of removal as teachable moments. There's almost always a stage where someone's board is so developed that it's clear that they'll win within 2-3 turn cycles and I'm out of boardwipes, and it can be unfun for the players who know they're going to lose to spin their wheels for the last turn or two knowing that they don't have any outs. I'll just speak my mental process out loud for the last couple of turns like, "Alright, I'm digging for mass removal here," or "Dang I wish I had that Wrath I cast a couple of turns ago to get out of this."
      It's a fine line to walk because you have to avoid sounding salty, but I think it pays off in making the learning process more organic and intuitive. It helps that they actually ask for advice about their deckbuilding and are receptive to honest suggestions like reminding them about games like that and suggesting they add more removal. I think getting better at thinking about the game from experience makes future deckbuilding more rewarding than theory does. Obviously theory is way more practical from a time sense though. Good thing we all enjoy each others' company too! 😅

      Where ancients tread and Warstorm surge (dealing 5 damage or creature power to a target) and adding magma something creature that bolts 3 damage to a target every upkeep (not just mine) as extra removal because I'm running mayael the Anima who heavily relies on big creatures being cheated out so if I don't have it on creatures, I can miss it easily.
      A lot of my removal is on creatures but I also am putting a lot of protection for key players in my board so that they can't be removed and keep netting me more creatures that help to remove

    A friend of mine is playing Sefris, his decklist is amazing, brilliant commander who can use graveyard effects every turn and also protect the board effectively. He becomes the target 80% of the time and wins waayyy too often with this deck. Now, I try to play strictly 3 graveyard hate cards in each of my decks, and even if first I was just trying to counter my friend's deck, in every game you'll have someone who uses his grave one way or another. In fact, these graveyard hate cards never feels like dead cards, even against non reanimation-focused decks.
    For example, I recommand to every zombie player to put Entrails Feaster and Withered Wretch. I play mono black zombie so I put them both. And like the Nerds said, they're creatures in your tribal deck !

Every time I go to build a deck I start with a strict assignment of how many slots Im willing to dedicate to each theme or category or whatever that's in the deck. One of my things is I always want 10 to 13 pieces of targeted removal/mass removal that doesn't affect me. And at least 2 boardwipe type of effects. It seems to be a pretty decent spot for me cuz even on games with bad draws, I can usually drag it out enough to get where I need to be to come back and be a real contender again.

    Good amounts of removal isn’t hard to achieve anymore. Obviously there are the gold standards like Beast Within or Swords, but just about every archetype has at least a couple removal spells that either 1) do something else for your gameplan or 2) have another function.
    Aura/Artifact Mutation (1) are removal and token generators. Bosieju and MDFCs (2) are either removal or a land. Rite of Oblivion (1) is an efficient removal and a sac outlet. Slip out the Back and March of Swirling Mists (2) are either temporary removal or protection for your own stuff.

    Scavenger Grounds is substantially different than Bojuka Bog, which enters tapped and uses an ETB to exile a graveyard, and Scavenger Grounds clears EVERYONES out, for good or ill. Also, if you've got Deserts going on (never know!) you can sacrifice ANY Desert. This is what I call a sneaky card, Bojuka Bog is an easy button card. Throw in the Black mana on Bojuka Bog and there are very good reasons to be running Scavenger Grounds.

    For enchantment-based removal, Out of Time is just amazing - 3 mana creature wipe that gets around nearly all forms of protection. It can be removed and the creatures come back, but often people won't want to do that because it'll bring back all their opponents' things too. If you have any synergy with enchantments or devotion to white, it's just so good! Oh, and the cherry on top is people can't command zone their commanders because they phase (don't change zones).

    I chose the choices that had the highest percentage which felt right based on the wording since I read “Spells”. If I had read Interactive “Cards” then I think my number would go up because of the amount of permanents that have interactions. For example I would consider Deadly Dispute, Doom Blade and board wipes interactive spells since they do something on cast and/or resolution. I wouldn’t have thought of Phyrexian Altar, Massacre Girl or any etb effects as spells in this context since their effects activate when they are already permanents. Understanding what you mean now I would agree that 16+ is good to have

    I play cards that aren't considered boardwipes but ultimately wipe the board. Interaction doesn't have to be instant and sorcery only. It can be on any card. That being said I am in the upper limits of interaction with my decks and I can confirm, interaction wins games. I can't tell you how many games I've won off a timely Fiend Hunter or a channeled Otawara. It is imperative that ever deck run interaction. If you are playing a heavy creature deck and have the colors Aura Shards is the best you can play. If you are playing an aristocrat theme Dictate of Erebos will make short work of your opponents creatures. No matter what color you play, even colorless, there is options for great interaction pieces that to many people overlook. This was a fantastic topic to cover and hopefully people will watch this and improve their decks and winrate as a result.
    Btw I play an average of 20.88 interaction pieces among my 9 decks.

    Honored Heirloom is one of my new favourite cards to play, 3mana mana rock which are everywhere in lower power decks anyway but again exile cards from grave . You can wait for them to target something with reanimate and then instant speed exile it. Great card for people that don't think grave hate is important because worst case it's a manalith yeah bad but playable for the times you need at and it's there

    Can confirm any black deck might as well have stuff like Entomb and Exhume or stuff that takes cards from the grave into your hand as it is too easy to basically tutor to send cards to the grave to then get them into your hand. Granted very few gets non creatures into your hand from the grave but often times it is worth running the Pseudo tutors if you are in a Black deck especially say if you wanted to cheat the commander tax so they would be forced to have some graveyard hate to force you to get your commander back into the command zone so unless you had a way to retrieve from exile and use that as an additional virtual card advantage you would opt to send it back to the command zone

    My favorite deck called Heroes of the Multiverse. The commander is Esika and the theme is she recruits the heroes of MTG and from around the multiverse. Prismatic Bridge is the portal she opens up to send our heroes to stop evil from destroying or conquering things. So I run the universe beyond cards like Rick, Eleven, Abraham Van Helsing, Godzilla, and will keep adding things like Transformers, Lord of the Rings, Doctor Who, etc.
    Going to do a deep dive with this advice see where I can add more interaction/graveyard hate on bodies that have some sense of synergy. If anyone has recommendations please let me know 🙏🏽

    So, the explanation for why people don't run enough is quite simple. A huge amount of playgroups like to play the, "build a big board state and clash armies" type decks, battle cruiser, etc. Very very VERY few groups like ANY kind of infinite combos or decks that don't require the combat step. People also don't like playing against Voltron builds since they can take out an individual player really quickly. The format is still highly casual, but YT creators are telling them to play more competitively. And this is where all the feel bads come in. People just want to play their deck and eventually interact in their way specifically. Personally, I just want to play and see everyone's decks do what they want to do. I run a lot of interaction and target what will end the game before everyone came to do what they want!

    At which point do you count it as interaction? I had the least in a morophon dragon tribal deck which had like 10 dragons with strong enter the battlefield effects and 6 instants/sorceries for boardwipes/single target removal. And thats the lowest number of "interaction" in my decks (that do not steal cards).
    For me commander is something I play with my friends. After having seen one person not being able to play his graveyard deck twice in a row because of one artifact someone else played, I honestly don't want to include exclusive graveyard hate. It's as unfun as building a deck around your commander who then gets countered every time you try to play him.

    I tend to run less removal and interaction, just because i feel it's less fun overall
    If my goal is to win, sure. run a ton. i'll try to make this the case with a couple of my stronger decks
    but with all the rest, i would rather include more tools to make my gameplan work, than to make an opponent's deck harder to work

    • @JohnnyYeTaecanUktena
      @JohnnyYeTaecanUktena ปีที่แล้ว

      A lot of times interaction can be seen as protecting your gameplan not just seen as making sure theirs don't work. For example running artifact removal or counter spells/cards to make them discard to protect your graveyard gameplan as black has very few artifact removal usually you would have to ty and turn them into creatures so you can murder or doomblade but you don't see people running Toymaker or anything to turn artifacts into creatures. Gate to Phyrexia is a really good black card sure you have to sac a creature or two per activation but it is a Enchantment that allows you to destroy target artifact and if you are in a black deck or grave based deck anyways it is well worth having just like Phyrexian Tribute which are the two ONLY black cards to be artifact removal unless it is your own artifacts you ran to rid yourself of then you have Priest of Yawgmoth which gives you black mana equal to the artifacts cost while sacing it, so you can just turn your useless dead cards like stuffy doll into mana instead of it just sitting there like a rock especially if they Karn, the Great Creator making you not able to use your mana rocks.
      What a lot of higher power level decks do is add hate cards that serve more than 1 purpose example being Shred Memory you can use it as Graveyard hate or for 1 and two black use it as a better Diabolic Tutor as in, it costs 1 less and it is instant speed with the added benefit of exiling a graveyard for 1 and a Black if the need ever arose. Here is another example say you unfortunately needed to play a Torpor Orb because you did not get a Command Beacon or Netherborn Alter to cast your commander Phage the Untouchable without dying but you done had your combo set up Endless Whispers, Witchbane Orb, Pithing Needle, Lethal Vapors and playing Phage was the last piece to win at your End Step now you somehow need to get rid of your Torpor Orb otherwise the game ends in a draw as her ETB will not work and she would just keep bouncing around the enemies boards as they can't target you since Witchbane Orb gives you hexproof so you use your Ratchet Bomb with two charge counters on it to destroy your Torpor Orb as you realize this was the only play you had since you unfortunately had your Priest of Yawgmoth exiled and your Phyrexian Tribute into the grave. Ratchet Bomb originally was for stuff like Karn's Sylex which just shuts down K'rrik and only required 3 charge counters to get rid of and K'rrik makes any black mana pip into Phyrexian mana so mono black storm was strong with him. Hell Karn's Sylex even shuts down Necropotence the best draw spell in the game without actually being a draw spell and gets around stuff like Hull Breacher
