I am a old man that has a weight problem. I am losing weight and my mind is thinking of things to do when i lose more weight I saw your video and now have bought a 9x12 Walmart painters canvas drop cloth and a poly tarp for a ground cover. I am going to go camp at lest one night to start soon. You did a good job on your video, you are a good teacher. Thank you.
well sir, I*I've been using tarps with the same purpose in mind for years. The big difference between you and me is that you are a man who clearly uses his head! I on the other had just took a tarp (canvass in the earlier years), stuck a short pole up in the front center and laid poles, rocks, whatever, on the sides. It sure does direct the heat, and especially in a quick camp in winter. I'm crowding eighty now and firmly believe that a man who can*t learn from another might just as well cut a hole in the ice and drop in! :o) I hope I've been able to subscribe alright, as I get the feeling I have a lot to learn from you, sir. Although a great deal of the application of what I learn will merely be added to my cache of memories. Many thanks. I do most kindly appreciate your videos and skill. Len Mc
As a Cub Scout leader I am always looking for new ideas to share with our Cubs. This tarp tent will be great to show the boys. Thanks for sharing this.
The marbles are an outstanding idea. I am amazed at the simplicity of it, & I don't understand why more people don't do it this way. Thank you so much.
I have heard of your method before but have not tried it. I still have not waterproofed any canvas articles yet but I have thought that if I do, I would probably use the silicone and mineral spirits combination recipe to brush on to the canvas. Once the mineral spirits evaporate the silicone will be impregnated throughout the canvas fabric and should be a long lasting and effective repellent.
Hallo Lonnie, I surprise my brother and my friends with this fastening as we was last weekend at fishing....It was amazing, thank you very much from germany thumb up
Searched for this exact video a thousand times! I can't stop watching it, it is beyond helpful and videos on this style are scarce. Plus, you added your own twist
This is another Fantastic video. Thank you for putting these "cheap & easy" solutions videos together. I'm beginning my youngest son's Bushcraft Ed this summer and will be overloading his 12 year old brain with ALL kinds of these "Think Outside the Box" solutions. Each of your videos is a reminder for me and a Q&A session for him. Thanks again and keep them coming.
Hey Lonnie, mate that's a great idea, we have a store in Australia called Bunnings its one of the biggest hard wear chains in Australia i bought a similar painters drop sheet and used your idea's works great mate. Lonnnie you should have a tv show on fox tell i bet it would be a great hit. great videos keep them coming. Thanks Neil from Austalia
As a buckskinner, I made this set-up over 30 yrs ago. I used lead round balls from my shooting bag instead of marbles. Use two facing each other for a nice camp!
Thanks so much! I used the canvas tarp to go camping 2 weekends ago, and with open front configuration we were able to sleep me, my friend and my dog. Neither of us are large guys, both under 6 feet about 150lbs, and the dog is a ausi sheph so not that big either. I used almost exactly your design from video. It was easy to set up, actually takes up less space than most modern tents when packed. It also created enough of a micro climate that when in you could feel heat radiate off dog. TY4idea!!
I prefer the marbles here due to the cleanliness and smoothness but yes there are many alternatives as you can see in my video at the link below. Tarps - Emergency Grommet Alternatives th-cam.com/video/oPKdEpa2MIg/w-d-xo.html
I really think I'm leaning towards this configuration... Possibly your "condo" style for my next trip out. I got several tarps, the combined weight is less than my tent and certainly much cheaper. Thinking if I put another tarp over the actual shelter, that creates a little air space and I stay warmer.
Good information as usual... BushcraftBartons (Mike and Josie Barton) mentioned you and your tarp tent approach (gave you credit too boot - as they went through their adaptation which also impressed me)... Thought I'd take a look - and now I'm a subscriber too. GREAT easy going style... and I like your common sense approach to doing things. All the VERY BEST!
Cool, we think alike :) I really like using the clear ones. They are also good for solar stills, water containers and ponchos etc. I also like that I can still see through it but in hot weather, it gets...hot lol.
+chris egnoto Using the clear plastic sheeting for a shelter was one of my first experiences of a home made shelter on a backpacking fishing trip with my dad many many years ago when I was a kid.
Thanks for sharing this. I just ran across your channel and saw your other video on this topic. My wife and i have been doing 18th century camping for a while time with a lodge and all the gear. It looks like she may not be going as often due to health reasons and I've been considering going to a diamond. A few friends have them and I haven't been impressed. This is an awesome alternative for setting up essentially the same type of tent but with more options. Thanks again! Liked & subbed!!!!
awesome. i saw this video and the video to make the closed front. i already have everything in my house so i know i do not have to buy new gear. thank you sir.
There are some rain proofing products you can use to water proof the painters canvas, after washing and drying it a couple of times to tighten/shrink the canvas weave. I'd leave a couple of forks (short branches) on your center pole to hang a candle lantern on, or a bag to put your eyeglasses in while sleeping, or other items. Have you tried a square piece of canvas to make a diamond shelter?
LOL! I THINK that this 2013 video is before you grew out the beard. I first saw one of your videos after you'd grown the beard. This is a decent 1-tarp design. I think I'd also wax that cotton tarp. Make it oilskin. Lay it out on any good flat spot that the sun's gonna make really hot, and slather on the otter wax or whatever. Drop cloth is a good combo of strength-vs-weight. Nice idea with the marbles. I'd look at something with maybe 2 fasteners instead of 3 in the middle of the short side of the tarp. In really nasty conditions, you could make a lower-profile, longer and narrower setup with more room for one person with lots of gear. Maybe not much narrower, depending on how far you space the fasteners from the end of the short side.
a bunch of my friends just went on a camping trip, after seeing this i figured i could make two, face to face together and make a decently enclosed tent. combined with my 50cal ammo box stove that has a chimney for the smoke, i could have a nice good sized tent going for less then 1/4th the price of a department store tent with a floor and all that EDIT: I just found your Make a condo tent video! thats almost exactly what i had in mind!
Brandon Fireking As I started reading your comment I was thinking of my "condo" tent video and I was going to tell you about it but then now I see that you already found it. I'll bet with a little stove in there that that would be pretty comfortable in the winter. Good luck with it
evenin folks - well my tarps finally came in and i fixed her up and its standin as we speak -- worked out pretty good - ran outta marbles ( i miss counted ) so jus got sum smooth rocks from the crik -- will be usin this after fly season fer sure - thanks agin fer sharin it - u2 take care
I saw another one of your videos on using a tarp tent and I enjoyed it and this one also. I have two tarps of 9' by 10' and have them in my backpack for campout's and wanted to learn how to tie knots so I could put them up as a shelter. I have looked at some videos on tying knots and that should help me.
Thanks Bro. What I have been looking for. Thinking about sewing a loop at the front top so I can hang from a ridge line. Cant cut anything living on National Forest Land where I do most of if not all my camping
Nice design you done a fantastic job, I do upholstery work and was trying to figure out what kind of econamical tarp to get I never thought of a painters tarp would keep out the rain and moster. Why cut up a tarp and sew it together in some other form your idea is great!
jedediahbc Yes, just a square tarp can be quite useful. If you are thinking of making a shelter from a tarp, and if you have not already done so, you might enjoy seeing the video listed below that shows how to make a tipi from a 12 X 16 foot inexpensive poly tarp. th-cam.com/video/wtLdMIaIIFw/w-d-xo.html
there was an simliar trick to this when I was watching a life hacks video on waterproofing the shoes for winter. I also knew that shinobi needed a quick shelter to set up using their cloth called furoshiki coated or treated with oil/wax. So I had an idea of what if we can make a canvas tarp using the same dimension such as a sarong or shemagh for the purpouse of traveling and a portable travel shelter.
The painters drop cloth is a good idea Bro! I wonder how that would be to add a few pieces and make a canvas wall tent? Did it hold up in the rain good?
Good video, looked at the tarps after seeing this video, there was a 8oz and 10oz, which did u use. 8oz would save a little on weight but didn't know if that might be too light of material.
This is an amazing video. I've been looking at a canvas tarp but every one i see that seems durable is expensive as hell. This looks like a perfect option i could go with. My one concern is, would i have to do anything to the dropcloth to make it waterproof? is it already waterproof? semiwaterproof?
Very cool idea for a easy cover. So, I guess the goal with die is to let it set up for several days? What happens if you leave those back corners out in the sun? Will they loose their color still, or have they set long enough? Thanks for the videos!
+alaskankare. Well there are actually household chemicals that are said to "set" the dye in fabrics. The typical is salt and vinegar. Do a web search to learn the ratios to mix with the water soak. I have not tried them so don't know how well it works.
What's the coldest you would say this setup would be effective for? I want to do some winter camping here in the Smokies, and there are some places that do not allow for a fire, so it's just me and the wool blanket and whatever browse I can find to keep warm.
I have heard(not tried) if you heat the dye water and soak the cloth in hot dye, then rinse the cloth in cold water it will set the die in the cloth. I believe you have to change the cold water several times till the water remains clear.
Your videos are great. My wife picked up one of these drop cloths today while she was out so, I will be trying this out next weekend hopefully. Been wanting to do it for a while.. I read several comments where you mentioned spray on waterproofing.. I had thought about using a 50/50 mix of boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits but, if the spray on stuff works that would be a lot better. Do you have a video showing the effectiveness of the spray on waterproofing? If not, would you demonstrate it on your canvas drop cloth tent? Thank you.
Scott Mull Thank you Scott. To tell you the truth I have never waterproofed mine. I have heard of quite a few people who use mineral spirits and silicone mixed together for a waterproofer for canvas and even bed sheets used as tarps. I think that is probably what I would do if I were going to waterproof this tarp. I have never done a video on water proofing yet. If I end up doing such a video in the future I will probably do the silicone / mineral spirits method. Probably wont be anytime soon though.
Scot Unotee Thank you Scot. The vest was purchased several years ago from "Duluth trading". Last I looked though this exact model was no longer available. There was one that was similar though. This one is about wore out and I would get me another of the same or as close to the same as I can get from the same company. A little bird told me though that Christmas is coming and that just maybe santa knows about my wore out vest. :o)
You can search out the recipe for mineral spirits and silicone for fabric waterproofing as that would be my favorite waterproofing method to try right now.
hey, just subscribed to your channel. so far your vids are great. just so happens I have a drop cloth for another project, I think i'll combine the two if I can. your shelter, and a tube cot. only problem is, i've lost my marbles. lol.
PS I've used vinegar to set dye into fabric that is not color safe. Don't know if it will keep it from bleaching out, but it will keep it from washing out.
+John O' Connell Larks head knot works well. Anything that is fairly sturdy and that can be used as a cordage would work of course. You may find another video I did to be of interest. It is called "Tarps - Emergency Grommetless Options". th-cam.com/video/oPKdEpa2MIg/w-d-xo.html
Many have mistaken "Buck" my dog for a bear in the videos. He sometimes catches me unawares as well and gets my heart a thumping at times. He will go wandering off in one direct while we are out in the woods and all of a sudden will come trotting into the area from a different direction.
Happy holidays Lonney (sorry if I misspelled your name), great video. Great information. You have a lot of experience and knowledge. I really appreciate that you are sharing your knowledge and experience. I am just getting into backpacking camping and this is a valuable knowledge to learn. I look forward to practicing out here in San Diego County. Subbed to your channel. Thank you...Rocky :)
I did not end up using the tarp much as I now have an abundance of tents. However it is my belief that the marbles as a fastener system will be very durable and long lasting. The cordage would need to break or the canvas would have to rip there before the fastening system would fail. If your canvas rips, it is time to replace the canvas as it has become too weak over time. Using the proper cordage would eliminate problems in that department.
now did you waterproof this at all? I want to try a similar project but as a semi permanent wigwam, or bender style shelter. I'm currently researching installing the tarp on a frame and then painting with household paint.
+Outdoor Adventurecraft No I have never waterproofed it. If I ever do, it will probably be silicone and mineral spirits. If you are not familiar with that, do a web search for "silicone mineral spirits canvas" without the quotes.
Hi there is it possible to add a stove jack to these for a stove or do you not recommend that? I am trying to make a hot tarp but would rather canvas however, I am conflicted because to waterproof it would mean using highly flammable chemicals and I just want the opinion of someone who has been doing this a long time as I am a beginner.
Yes you could add a stove jack to canvas. You could even make teh stove jack if you desired to. In one of my video I show how I made a stove jack and how I put it in a homemade tent made form poly tarps. Might have some info that would help you out. Turn Your Tarp Tent Into a Hot Tent - Stove Installation th-cam.com/video/HfiUgGhTe1k/w-d-xo.html
+Maplehouse Knives and Bushcraft another way was what native indians did with their wigwams was smoking them the resins made it brown and waterproofed it may smell though lol
Hi There. Thanks for the video. I am allergic to latex and plastic and am looking at canvas for tenting full time for two months this summer. I am on a very tight budget, so painter's tarps are a great idea! Obviously I'd need a bottom and enclosed/door option. Do you have any ideas or links for that kind of thing?
hiraethchild Yes I just happen to have a video that demos just what you may be looking for. The video is here th-cam.com/video/bRBtof2pAqI/w-d-xo.html This layout though uses up a lot of your tarp to give you a floor. In other words, if you could do with a floor, or if you used a seperate floor, you could end up with a lot more space in your tent. You might also be able to use a different tarp layout which I demo in a different video whis is basically the same as the tarp layout in this video except it has closable doors for privacy. I will post the link to that video in another reply to follow this one.
hiraethchild Here is the video I was telling you about . th-cam.com/video/GNUYFViOoUo/w-d-xo.html here is another layout that you may like as well. this uses 2 tarps face to face to make one large "condo" tent.
hiraethchild sorry about the multiple posts but my android keyboard and tablet combo does not play well with copy and paste such as the links. This is the condo tent. You would add your own seperate floor to thisif you wanted a floor th-cam.com/video/lLqBaiFEllM/w-d-xo.html.
I've been trying to decide the cheapest and easiest way to replace my current tarp with something that will 'disappear' in the forest. This would work. I could pain the canvas with some camo colours, then cut it down to my desired size, hem the edges and install some tie outs. I will have to price compare this vs camo fabrics. Thanks ~Flinton Steele
Boiled linseed oil mixed with beeswax is a time proven method of waterproofing natural absorbent type fabrics. However i think my personal choice would be to use a mix of mineral spirits and silicone. If you are not familiar with this waterproofing, do a web search for "mineral spirits silicone fabric waterproof" without the quotes.
evenin folks - thot id update ya's - i dyed the tent 2 days ago using the hot bath method and used the salt and vinegar rinse -- its bin up fer 2 days now in hi winds and 70 deg sun and is holding good - havent had any rain yet so thats the next test -- sure happy with it - id send u a photo if i cud -- thanks agin and you folks take care

Very well done video. I'm so disillusioned with the high cost of canvas tents, it really makes you think of building your own.
yes, I do agree with you. Maybe we can made one DIY
A couple coats of Thompsons water seal in a pump sprayer works great for waterproofing canvas.
I have heard of your method before but have not tried it. to set the color dye you have to rinse the canvas in salt (1 cup)/vinegar (4cups) then try it in the dryer

Probably wont be anytime soon though.
awesome video. functional and light and cheap. what kind of vest are you wearing in the video....lol looks more user friendly then my Carhartt vest.
lol. thanks for the reply and hope Santa brings you your new vest and maybe he will bring me one as well.
Buen video, ideas para acondicionar el tarp
You can search out the recipe for mineral spirits and silicone for fabric waterproofing as that would be my favorite waterproofing method to try right now.
hey, just subscribed to your channel. so far your vids are great. just so happens I have a drop cloth for another project, I think i'll combine the two if I can. your shelter, and a tube cot. only problem is, i've lost my marbles. lol.
Lonnie, I must have missed it. What size is that tarp? Very inventive and creative.
9 feet by 12 feet
My man is a painter gotta show him this one
Hey great idea with the drop cloth! Did you take the plastic liner out of the inside? It sounded quiet when you moved the canvas around.
+Trevor McPhee Thank you. There is no plastic in it or on it. It is just cotton canvas
Thank you for sharing this! 👍🏻
PS I've used vinegar to set dye into fabric that is not color safe. Don't know if it will keep it from bleaching out, but it will keep it from washing out.
Can you tell me what weight of painter's canvas I should get? There's cheap and there's cheap.
How do you keep the mosquitos off ya w/no door flaps?
can you use a regular tarp for this
how much did the canvas drop cloth cost?
What type of knots did you use? Do you think a vine would work ? What about stones in place of marbles?
+John O' Connell Larks head knot works well. Anything that is fairly sturdy and that can be used as a cordage would work of course. You may find another video I did to be of interest. It is called "Tarps - Emergency Grommetless Options". th-cam.com/video/oPKdEpa2MIg/w-d-xo.html
Okay, thanks. I'll check out that video.
great video
15 seconds into this video I thought a bear was walking thru! HA!!
Me also
0:16 yeow! thought the dog was a griz for a second there ;p
Am I the only one , for just a second, that thought a bear walked in scene behind him? LOL
What is your tie-off line made of?
Whats a proper size canvas tarp shelter size for a guy thats 6 feet 2 inches tall?
Pretty intelligent bud. Nice!
Most Excellent!
great video, thanks
Not real sure you'll see this comment, but how long did those fasteners last until they tore? Love your videos btw.
@phreshayr thank you and hope to see more of your videos in the future! God bless Connie and yourself!
now did you waterproof this at all? I want to try a similar project but as a semi permanent wigwam, or bender style shelter. I'm currently researching installing the tarp on a frame and then painting with household paint.
+Outdoor Adventurecraft No I have never waterproofed it. If I ever do, it will probably be silicone and mineral spirits. If you are not familiar with that, do a web search for "silicone mineral spirits canvas" without the quotes.
+Far North Bushcraft And Survival thanks for quick reply and yes I have heard of it but havnt looked into it. I now plan to look into it.

In your experience, what would be the best waterproofer for canvas?
Thanks Lonnie and greetings from Germany
make your own, 16oz beeswax, 8oz turpintine, 8oz boiled linseed oil, heat together turns into a paste.
+YpsiFrog i did see some one using a large wax candle rubbing it on and then using an iron on a low heat to push it in to the fabric
***** Ok thanks a lot for getting back to me. Cheers!
Brilliant!
Holy cow! Dolphin Smooth
Thanks

S.F. Outdoors Club Whatever route you decide to go I wish you luck with your new project.
Can this be waterproofed? I seem to recall hearing the old timers would soak canvas in some type of oil to help with water. Any thoughts?
Thanks for letting me know about your results on your project.
How heavy is the canvas 8 or 10 once? I am planning to use one as well it is 8 oz and I am told it does take to waterproofing as well as the 10 oz.
I forget now but I believe the canvas is either 10 or 12 Ounce.
Do you ever have an issue with the ties down cordage popping off the marbles when pulling the tarp tight.
No I have never had it pop off.
Far North Bushcraft And Survival thanks!
Very nicely done .. Gave me some great ideas .. Thanks and you also have a new sub ..
Welcome to the channel Anthony and thank you
