  • This is a requested video showing how to configure a tarp into both an open front and a closed front tent using nylon, canvas or poly tarps. This tent design is especially great to use with a fire in front especially with a tarp made from canvas.

    Thanks.
    I camped out a lot as a kid and a teen, and tried to come up with a few simple and versatile ideas.
    This is probably the most simple and ingenious thing I have seen on shelters.
    Nice presentation style, too.
    Thanks again.

    I've watched this at least 6 times. Thanks for the time and effort. Your clothes add to the ambiance of the times when this would have been a typical canvas tent setup. (If you've got it, flaunt it!) Knowledge passed on is knowledge preserved. Beautifully done.

    Thank you for this video. My youngest grandson was visiting 2 weekends ago and decided he wanted to build a teepee. With adult supervision, he chose his poles from the woods, did the cutting and trimming to produce 3 poles. Keep in mind, he is only 8. He owns my heart. He draped an old tarp around his frame, but wasn't happy. We found a box of goat skin hides I been saving and now I am to sew together for a better fitting canvas. Your help with these videos are awesome.

    No problem, although a video would be nice. I particularly like your fringing, across the chest, the back, and down the sleeves. Just what I have been thinking so I will probably do something similar. Like you, I figured on creating my own pattern from a shirt and pants that seem to fit the design I have in mind. Canvas is a lot better in bad weather. It was all we had when I started camping in 50's. Most retail tents are only water resistent and not very good at that job. I just bought a good teepee tent and I love it. Really enjoyed your video. I just want to get back to the simple camping days.

    Thanks for doing this! I am definitely going to get me a tarp now, I am convinced! There's no doubt in my mind I want to try this out in the Spring. I have seen some of your videos before and I thought they were great. After all the knot and cordage skills I have learned it's time to try out a tarp instead of a tent and I'm a do it the way you taught in these videos. I love the fact that you can use stones to create extra tie-off points, and use toggles and stakes made out wood instead of lumping tent pegs around. Replacing the tent poles with wooden ones also cuts down on unnecessary bulk!

    Lon, thanks for taking time to make your vids. Spent 2 wks in Alaska 3 rs ago. U R a lucky man! I made a tarp tent per your previous vid. One problem I had when setup as shown here is that those corner flaps that are folded in at rear corners wick water into tent and soak anything placed on them. Just a problem using untreated cotton. I would roll those flaps up and leave outside the tent. (simulated HEAVY downpour w garden hose.) Also, my tarp faded noticeably after only 4 hrs in sun (cont)...

    Great idea Lonnie. Only, im going to use as a outhouse enclosure. Not at all meaning to insult your fine work. I have a spacious tipi tent turned to hot tent, was researching ways to make a potty tent/camping shower tent, us guy can just use a tree...but with your lady, better to prepare for her. Your great concept is perfect. Im 5'11 rather tall, those ive seen are small and the shower tarps that companies sell, are like a body bag, not very comfortable for a camp shower. Its actually a good idea to clean off when on the long camp trips. Also, there are many people who live off grid, out in the sticks, in tents or dug out or hobit houses, this would be a great idea for a shower house for them. This type of lifestyle is becoming more popular because our world is becoming very weird and bugging out kits are on the rise. Ive been camping since a small kid, its like ingrained, my wife and I camped all over the Rocky Mountains in the harshest of conditions, we have turned roughing it into glamping ... nice, easy, relaxing having a good time, even if the weather is bad, can still have a great camp trip. You and I know what to do out in the woods, but many people dont know, I think videos like yours will help people survive when shyte hits the fan..and that may just come.

Tho i use a 10x12 tarp when i set mine up this way, usually for two people.You can see the tarp i have set up in my intro vid with the chimney thru the door. Great job Lonny

  • @jonnyboat2
    @jonnyboat2 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like how you hung the tarp from the tripod. Seems like I could prefab a tent from a large plastic tarp by hanging it from such a tripod, staking the corners, folding the left over excess underneath and somehow seal the bottom edges to the floor with glue and tape to make it waterproof. Then, all you'd need to do is make a tripod each time. I don't know how well it would work, but you always give me ideas for making things. Now I have a new project.

    • @Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
      @Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +jonnyboat2 Yes a plastic tarp works fine. I did a 3 part series on making a tipi from poly tarps and I used Gorilla tape in the construction of the tipi. Gorilla tape has a better adhesive as well as being heavier duty tape itself than plain duct tape. The tipi series is here at the following link if you are interested and have not seen them already.

    Wish I had spent more time in Alaska before the bones got old. Most of my time up there was on the north side working around Deadhorse. I love tipi style tents and they stay nice and toasty with a small fire inside. Posted a couple videos of my 21ft Tyvek tipi but plan another about the same size you posted here. Also working on a bivy tent combo for fast compact deployable situations. Thanks for posting videos with great views like this.

    • @Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
      @Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +onewyatt1 Alaska is indeed a great place to be. I grew up here and love it. That 21 foot tyvek tipi was impressive. It would be interesting to see your "bivy tent" when you get that done as well.

    • @onewyatt1
      @onewyatt1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Was thinking of using the 9ft wide Tyvek about 14ft long. Just double it over and Tyvek tape the ends together and one side. Stake the 2 closed corners down and the open end will be staked down on the bottom and tide to tree or pole. It would look something like a horizontal wedge on one end and a near vertical wedge on the other. Could be closed or propped open at the with mesh screen if open. Figure to just stuff the sleeping bag and pad in the end and roll it all up for bugout. Tyvek breaths like gortex and will keep you stuff dry. It is very thin and lite weight, something like cheap tarp but I think it is a little stronger. Over all, Tyvek will cost about 1/2 as much per square foot but without grommets. The Tyvek tape goes a long way to cover for lack of grommets though.

    • @triumphmanful
      @triumphmanful 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Far North Bushcraft And Survival : Tyvek is ok, but damn noisy, wind and rain make a real racket on it ! I just made a bivy sack from it. It is pretty warm and my surplus down bag fits in nicely and stays dry. I used double sided carpet tape attached to velcro strips to close it. Carpet tape is a bear to work with. Very sticky !

    • @onewyatt1
      @onewyatt1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      triumphmanful The Tyvek will be noisy unless it is worked soft. I twist the hell out of it in many directions, stomp on it twist the hell out of it a few more times and it gets almost as soft as cotton. Very thin but durable stuff, even when abused. Only thing I don't like is, its not heavy enough to stay down. It likes to act like a hot air balloon and tries to lift off unless I use some big ass stakes to hold it down. My 21ft does but I don't know if a smaller one would. I plan to build some smaller from 12 to 18 feet. I also plan to build some one pole versions.

    Hi Lonnie! You directed me to this video and it's a great video. Honestly, I think I get something from every video you do. Going to be doing some elk hunting in some remote country, these tarp tents and your long fires may just be the trick for reducing weight and staying warm. All I need is tarp, axe/saw/knife and probably get Paracord.

Having a Severely handicapped child I've never been anywhere in my life cuz I can't trust anyone to care for him properly. So this will be such a treat for me you have no idea !! I have a little 2 person tent but it got ruined in the yard during a storm. We've had 3 big noreaster STORMS in 2 weeks here recently so I haven't a tent anymore 😢. I had it set up cuz that's my dream to go camping, so I'd go outside and make a fire and just hangout by myself having fun LoL. I can't really afford another so this could be an option for us. Moneys a bit tight with my son and all so this may work. My ex can care for our boy and for once in many many years I can have 24 hours to myself 🙌. Anyhow as always thank you for teaching me something new !!! God bless you and yours 😇👍👍👍👍👍

      Awesome. I hope you do get the chance to go camping and fulfill your dream. I respect you for making the care of your son such a high priority. A relatively inexpensive poly tarp from WalMart should work just fine for this style of shelter. A tarp from an expensive material is not needed. A cheap material may not last as long as say a nylon tarp but will still keep the rain off and shelter an occupant just as well.

    Excellent idea Lonnie, works so well. Somehow missed this one as Michael Barton just showed his version. Looks like the 8x10 makes a nice open front tent and a 10x12 tarp is great for a closed front for 2 people but figure a 10x12 canvas tarp would be quite heavy to carry around. Keep 'em rollin' brother!

    This is great... been thinking about travelling australia on foot and it'd be good to know how to do it and get some kind of shelter happening

    Great idea for my self but the cost that I will spend for duck cloth will be well worth it to me I'll have to watch and re watch this video a few times to get it down but this is going to be a fun tent to use thanks for showing.

    I bought a 10x12 nylon tarp from Farm &Fleet. I'm just not that crazy about canvas, to much work waterproofing . Your setup works great. I like it better than the 'lean' setup as it gives more coverage on the sides. It will definatley be my 'it's going to rain/snow' setup from now on. Thanks for the knowledge.

    I thank you for showing us how to construct a tarp tent and I have two tarps which I have in my backpack and they are the length, and width of the one you used in this demonstration and I want to make a sleep system where I can have my sleeping pad and sleeping bag can go into it, and also have my backpack inside out of the elements as well.
