Mondaine's watch Dial is ICONIC. It can be found in Art Museums in the US, London and Spain. In 2012 Apple was almost Sued by Mondaine, for using the Dial design without permission. A very underrated Brand...but certainly not a Fashion Brand Dave. Good content tho 👌🏽
Mondaine is such a cool quirky watch. I consder it a dress watch, but it's also fun. Simple design without being plain nor boring. Playful design. I believe the one with no date is nicer. I own the Evo 2, 35mm, no date. I love it. And I found it at half price, £120. Basically it is just like yours, but with no date and a leather band.
I'm Swiss. These are for the tourists and are sold in pretty much every souvenir shop but I've never seen it on a wrist ever here. The design is nice but when you see these watches daily in the train stations, you kind of want something else to look at on your own wrist.
Yeah, same here, although can be fun when out for a long trip. For me is that its movement is stop-and-go every second as opposed to the smooth run half a second stop go on the minute the SBB has to them.
I bought the Mondaine “Giant” (white dial with black hands) years ago. It is readable across a room. So, when I was in Switzerland a few years ago I was one of those tourists who bought another one at the airport. This time it wasn’t the “Giant” but the dial was nearly as big with the dial being in black and the hands in white. It is also readable across the room. I just like the look of the watch. And, I’ve actually seen one on the wrist of a Swiss railroad conductor while riding on a Swiss train.
Totally get what you are saying but gotta admit it’s a nice design so for us non Swiss these watches are attractive by themselves . I scored one for 80 usd in eBay brand new which I think was a good price as the same model was selling for at least 150 usd at the time.
Great video. Bought my Mondaine on sale since it is pricey. Keeps superb time and looks great with a black and red leather strap. Crown is a bit smooth, hard to grip; but, it's a simple, elegant and classic look with a second hand deliberately reminiscent of the red paddles Swiss rail conductors waved to signal train boarding and departure. Dial is very easy on my older eyes. One of my favorites. I did have to exchange it to get one where the second hand hit the markers precisely.. (really bugs me when they don't align!).
@@Strideo1 Because it has the super unique minute jump feature where the second hand pauses at the twelve and the minute hand jumps the minute forward instead of creeping
Beautiful watch. To me it's more of an everyday kind of watch than a fashion watch. I'd love having one as I very much like the clean design and the big date would be visible at a glance. Like someone else said in another comment, kudos to you sir for picking up what you think would please your audience and not just going for one of the more expensive onea just because you could.
I have two Mondaines: the sports version (with tritium) and the Stop2go. I would not call them a "fashion watch" or brand: because it has more design heritage. Also be aware that there are no other watches with this quartz movement: this is specific for them. I mean: can you name any other quartz movement that goes from 31st to 39th? So I think calling it a fashion brand is really, really selling them short! To me Mondaine is like a Bauhaus watch: you instantly recognize it. Also my Stop2go has a Unique quartz movement in the sense that it more sweeps than ticks and the 2 seconds pause at every whole minute!
My Cons - 30 m WR, day goes all the way to 40 (what's that for?) and as a result it came with 34 day on a calendar, seconds hand does not quite line up with minute markers, which makes a huge difference in comparison to a railway clock where the seconds hand glides very smoothly.
I understand one of their models does the "pause, shift" when the seconds hand gets to 12 and the minute hand moves - like the railway clock does. That would be a conversation starter. Good vid. Keep at it!
I like that version. I believe it is the Stop2Go version. The trick to the second hand is pretty cool to see and how it mimics the actual Swiss railway clocks.
@@greamespens1460 - Very true. As well as the "Stop2Go" version , is Only available in 42 mm. The Style is greatly suited to the Traveler. Visually nice but, I cannot unsee the fact that the second hand does not line up centered 🧐 on the minute markers... not even the "12" 🥺. Should have used an automatic movement to get around that.
You did a great job in selling the company. It's a quirky looking watch with some character but before the review I would never pay the RRP for this watch. Still a bit expensive for what it is in my eyes, but I think that you will have swayed a few people that were on the fence😊👍
Thanks for the review nice job! Have you seen the Stop2go? It's a lot more $ but has a lot more of a story.... Same look but the second hand sweeps around in 58 seconds and then stops at the 12 for 2 seconds while the hand advances one spot just like the Swiss rail clocks do when they sync up with the central clock ensuring all clocks are exactly in sync ever minute. Forgot about the lume on the underside of the hands which is trong enough to make out in the middle of the night!
Well Dave, as an update I took a risk on an eBay quartz model for sale at just under 45GBP. The photographs showed a watch in quite poor condition in need of some love. Anyway it turned out to be a mid size 35mm Evo 30300. It wasn't in very poor condition it just needed a clean, a polish and a battery. I did this and put on a new carbon fiber strap. Now it looks perfect except the mineral glass needs a polish to remove a scuff that isn't immediately obvious. I like that feeling when the ball is in the back of the net and you feel like you've scored the winner (except every vintage Favre Leuba I get is an own goal!). So that's the Mondaine checked off the list of wants.
Visually speaking, their HELVETICA line has more interesting and varied design. The rest of their "collection" is basically just one watch. I would categorize their style as modern minimalistic, like Ikea furniture. That's a compliment as Ikea furniture has great design.
Just recently found your channel. I just received my first Mondaine 40mm, Black grape band with white face, no logo to closer replicate the train station look. Most of my retired day is spent at computer distance without my contacts in, so this face is easy to read and as a plus, goes well with my G scale outdoor Swiss modeled railroad layout! Mondaine, USA did give me a customer service discount because when I ordered the watch, they were out of stock, so this came in at a wonderful price!
in hollannd they use this clocks to they are so awesome the real one stops every min and than it moves the min hand....i have a clock on the wall from Mondaine it runs for 20 years non stop !!!!
Hey, nice to see your channel developing. I remember when you were just starting. I like your style, I think editing department expnded in the right direction and I find your videos much more refined. Good luck!
Austria and Germany use a VERY similar design for their train station clocks and just like I wouldn't really want to have the dial of the local clock tower on my wrist I'm also not very enthusiatic about seeing more of this one, even if the price would be more reasonable.
Nice review! It really is fresh and very legible. I like that you would not be able to tell if the seconds hand is hitting all the markers! LOL always a pet peeve for me when choosing quartz watches.
I want the big wall clock! But the smaller wrist version is a great looking piece, too. Super legible. Very crisp. I think that seconds hand lends itself better to an automatic movement.
Price is definitely not the best. I’d expect better case finishing and a screw down case back with 50ATM at that price for a quartz. But a lovely watch nonetheless
Hey Dave, great review. I agree with you about the value/design aspect of it. It looks great yet simple. What other brand watches would you suggest that offers better value than Mondaine? Can't wait to read your feedback. Thanks ps, the 2 dates could be Month/Day? Just wondering.
Without a doubt an iconic design....it's a very clean and legible....but I still think it's heart over head....cracking well rounded review brother.... thoroughly enjoyed it....🏴⌚🏴⌚
Too bad you didn't mention Stop2Go feature in some models. This is main cool thing about Mondaine. Not mentioning that doesn't give the brand full justice. A bit of lost opportunity. You could choose any watch from their catalogue and you did not get most interesting and closest to the original Swiss railway clock. However love your work and your channel. All best from Norway😎❤️
Interesting to get a peek inside but no-one will be crying out for a case back window. Iconic Bauhaus design. Perhaps familiarity breeds contempt. A bit overpriced, certainly, compared to Far East imports but it is made in Switzerland and worth it if you like minimalism as there's nothing else quite like it. Apple had to pay quite hefty compensation for their copywrite theft and quite rightly so. The Stop2Go gimmick is fun but I wouldn't pay a lot extra for that party piece. The quartz version isn't massively overpriced, compared with fashion brands, but the automatic is very expensive.
It has a Swiss movement with sapphire, which are both great, but only 30 WR? I don't think I would pay more than $150 for a watch that couldn't survive an accidental dunking.
30m SHOULD survive that, but they certainly won't replace it under warranty if it doesn't, that's the deal. For that price you'd indeed expect far more.
I'd rather a swiss railroad clock I think. This watch has great legibility and huge date for those with bad eyes. It is interesting that the second hand does not come to a point, you don't have to worry about it hitting the markers.
I’ve just bought one and it’s going straight back, I cannot have the second hand not matching the numbers! It’s fractionally out and I’m afraid it’s doing my head in!!
Great review, Dave! 👏 As a big railway and trains nerd since childhood, I of course also became a fan of Mondaine timepieces - but only once I've discovered them which was unfortunately as late as 2019 🤨 However, I do now already own one of their wall clocks and three watches, one of which is precisely the model you reviewed here (MSE.40210), only that mine is on leather strap. I dream of course of getting the automatic and Stop2Go versions someday but I doubt I'll be able to, due to their (too) high prices. 😒 It would however be great if you ever reviewed another Mondaine; as a budget watch channel, I think their environment-friendly line Essence would be right up your alley. 😉
Over all this is just not a watch for me. The case design, the finish the dial, none of it is my type of watch. And unfortunately it just looks cheap especially how the end link is crimped onto the bracelet, no other way to say it. As always you do a great review on it and your video production quality is great. Thank you.
I enjoyed that review Dave. I would say that it is fashionable rather than a fashion watch. I don't think that it's a fashion brand. However it does put seem to put style over substance in that its kind of simple and minimalistic so I think that you would be paying for that kind of exclusivity in design rather than the construction and whatever bells and whistles it has. I'd really like one but I don't think that I could justify that kind of price for me. I'd be expecting more. I did check out the Berny homage on AliExpress. It looks nice but lacks the lollipop second hand and for me that's the deal breaker in the negative sense and why I don't think that I will buy one. It's only 22 GBP for the quartz though. There is also less heft to the markers and hands. They seem slimmer somehow. It was nice to see the small child's face and the hymn book too. 👍⌚🙏
Most fashion watches I know have very small cheap quartz movements in them, and you know - are made by fashion brands. So, this didn't seem to strike me as something that could be described as such.
It is iconic design but that alone doesn’t justify the cost. Also, I suspect horological engineering may have adequately addressed date complications, my ten pound quartz watch knows there isn’t a 34th day of any month particularly if the argument is about accuracy for train timetables (no trains on the 34th either)
It's a big date complication, which means that they have to use two wheels, one for each numeral. So there's one wheel with blank-3 on it and one with 0-9. So at the end of the month you have to cycle the second wheel back to 0 to reset it. Normal date complications by contrast have a single wheel that goes from 1-31.
I wanted the automatic version but it is too expensive. I finally got one pre-owned exactly like the watch in the video but with mineral cristal ($100 USD). Enough for me.
This is a pretty common gripe about quartz watches that's mostly a misconception. The alignment of the seconds hand with the indexes doesn't really tell you much about the quality of the timepiece. In fact quartz watches assembled by hand are more likely to have misaligned seconds hands than mass produced machine assembled watches. Even Omega's quartz watches are known to have seconds hands that don't precisely hit the indexes.
@@Strideo1 didn't know that, still that's one of those little things that for some reason really bother me more then they should, I just like everything to align perfectly. Also now I know I probably will never own a quartz Omega :-)
I understand why people buy these but not a big fan of the aesthetics personally. That 'pizza pan' face just doesn't appeal to me although the legibility and general usability are definitely plus points. Considering the price and specs I'd pass on this and go with Seiko or Tissot. If I saw a Mondaine I liked at a really low price I might be tempted but then again the money could be put towards something better. Strangely enough that happened to me last summer when I passed on a 1/2 price Mondaine with a deckchair stripe fabric strap. Agree about the packaging though, the Tissot boxes for example are ridiculously OTT for an everyday watch.
I have a watch with a big date complication, and it resets after the 31st. This one is a little strange and quirky. I don't know that I would be satisfied with it running all the way to 39. I do like the look of this watch, but I definitely think they are overpriced for what they are, especially the automatic.
The RONDA movement is a bottom of the range, one jewel piece of Meh, so $20 worth. A significant proportion of the Mondaine range is glass not saphire and only a questinable 30m depth, which is basically splash proof. At least on the Giant and a few others they have lume on the back of the hands which is a nice touch. They should be considered a novelty dress watch only. Not worth the money, but nice on the wrist. The battery may outlast the movement, and the date is prone to being off-centre or just not working. Date needs adjustment every month. The Mondaine stop2go range are a different watch all together.
Looks like your in a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saint hurch building. By the way your kid opening the door mid shot in the video was cute and hilarious.
I just sold my limited edition"Day date" from 2004 The second hand never hit the markers. I only buy Japanese Quartz if I have to. I found out that I did not want a station clock on my wrist anymore. Not very well made. More of a status watch from the nineties.
They are fashion watches as the leather strap degrades very quickly. Also after a year of intermittent use the hands warped and got stuck on each other causing the watch to stop. For a Swiss Ronda movement, I am not impressed with them.
i can understand, why people like these watches, but for me, there just noting special and kinda boring. BUT, i think, the reason for this is, because i was grown up in switzerland and i saw this design everyday (multible times) and now, im living in germany and the german railwail clocks are literaly just a rip-off of the swiss railway clocks (even with the 1,5 second secondhandstop every minute), so if i want to see this design, i don't have to look down on my wrist, i have to look up on the trainstation, literaly every day, since i can think ;)
A few good specs. Horrible and goofy looking. Looks like a blast from the 90’s. Would look perfect with Vuarnet sunglasses, kangol hat and white linen pants with a mint green shirt
Never heard of them. Thanks for the intro. I didn't realize it was March 34th already!

And unfortunately it just looks cheap especially how the end link is crimped onto the bracelet, no other way to say it. As always you do a great review on it and your video production quality is great. Thank you.
That date change was interesting lol.
Kind of a funky watch.
A swiss Ronda quartz movement is roughly $15 USD.
How does it say 34 for the day of the month?
I've thought about getting the auto version but they are expensive!
40 days on the date complication? Why? I don't get it. Please explain, if you can.
Hence the name Big Date cause lots of em' lol 🥂👍
The second hand seemed to me like it's hitting exactly between the markers, for this price it should be better than that.
At first I heard this was the "Mundane Evil Big Date 40mm watch".
I have a watch with a big date complication, and it resets after the 31st. This one is a little strange and quirky. I don't know that I would be satisfied with it running all the way to 39. I do like the look of this watch, but I definitely think they are overpriced for what they are, especially the automatic.
☝🏼good pick👍🏼
I picked up the Black Dial 35mm version for £65. 😂
Like the watch, but the strap doesn't work for me.
Hey Dave, what kind of winder is on your desk?
The RONDA movement is a bottom of the range, one jewel piece of Meh, so $20 worth. A significant proportion of the Mondaine range is glass not saphire and only a questinable 30m depth, which is basically splash proof. At least on the Giant and a few others they have lume on the back of the hands which is a nice touch. They should be considered a novelty dress watch only. Not worth the money, but nice on the wrist. The battery may outlast the movement, and the date is prone to being off-centre or just not working. Date needs adjustment every month. The Mondaine stop2go range are a different watch all together.
Have i missed something but why is it showing the 34th
What was 34?
“After 40 it resets to 1.” Why the 40 day month?
Opens watch... and it's the 34th of the month.
What planet is this for? it is the 34th day of 40. To me, its really no different than a $50 quartz watch with sapphire crystal...so, $100?
Is it just me or the second hand doesn't hit the indices?
How is the date showing 34...? 😂
Swiss State Railway ticker.
"Swiss made" doesn't mean anything to me.
Japanese watches are vastly better in quality, functionality, accuracy, price, longevity.
With the QC of Seiko, I´m not so sure about that.
@@MrPleers Seiko is Japanese for shovel, as in 'assembled with a'.
Looks like your in a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saint hurch building. By the way your kid opening the door mid shot in the video was cute and hilarious.
Ha! No, thats just our Japanese home, where we're meeting for now. We're a Baptist Church.
34?!
They should have skip the date, will be even more striking.
I just sold my limited edition"Day date" from 2004 The second hand never hit the markers. I only buy Japanese Quartz if I have to. I found out that I did not want a station clock on my wrist anymore. Not very well made. More of a status watch from the nineties.
The date says 34???
Four minutes in and that misaligned seconds hand is driving me nuts.
The Dutch ones look very much the same.
Perhaps it's a Mundane watch?
Is the red crown a sticker?
A few good specs. Horrible and goofy looking. Looks like a blast from the 90’s. Would look perfect with Vuarnet sunglasses, kangol hat and white linen pants with a mint green shirt
