This is one of the best interviews I've ever heard with any musician. Marcus is such an engaging speaker, he always seems to find the right examples to illustrate his key points and concepts. I don't know if he teaches, he would be the most amazing teacher.
THIS is the best interview of a great musical talent , filled with wisdom , i've ever heard. the only other interview that is quite different but recommended is "The Universal Mind of Bill Evans" But i've never heard so much depth coming from a musician.

Marcus is my all time bassist and favorite musician. Been a fan for almost 30yrs. His tone and style is legendary. However Marcus is extremely modest...hes definitely apart to the contemporary 80s jazz movement considering his contribution thru bass, producing, composing played a critical role in David Sanborns success and helped reinvent Miles Davis sound introducing him to the younger generation of the 80s.
I could relate to his comments about growing up in a house with a basement. My friends, numerous bands and countless hours of practicing my drums in my parents basement. My parents new where I was most of the time and the neighbors didn’t mind when I had my jazz musician friends over. Great interview
No, he's not a legend. He's mediocre at best. Anyone with an IQ over 100 and a decent understanding could follow the arc of his life and realise that he's a failure and a loser.

Sadly, this interview started with just that. Marcus asks how Dave is doing and he just rolls with the questions and didn't answer. and the look on Marcus' face was telling.
Have liked Marcus Miller since the eighties, never seen him without playing the bass. Great to see the man behind the bass in this clip, and realize that I like him even more now. What a nice guy with a great attitude. Exciting to listen to Marcus Miller's wisdom. You have great content and it would be delivered better if a video editor can clean up your video saturation problem and an audio engineer with Izotope RX 7 to clean up the background noise, compression problem and tonal curve. Interview would be MUCH more engaging!
There was a moment when Marcus told David that when he wants to tell you about his life he's going to pick up an [electric] bass and David paused and changed the topic and what a missed opportunity. Marcus was ready to open up big time and looked perplexed and disappointed with David switched topics.
Now that's a proper musician right there! Sharing his great knowledge and wisdom. Respect! But the sound on your interviews needs to be sorted @NYU. The story about Steve Gadd in the studio is just the best!
Interesting to hear him talking about electric bass in jazz. I love upright but electric bass deserves to have a place in jazz. I think it got a bad reputation during the jazz funk era, where those that played electric headed away from straight-ahead jazz and more towards new sub-genres, and those that played straight-ahead on electric decided to go back to the upright. Electric bass just got associated with the Jaco / jazz funk sound, but just because you don't hear electric bass on many straight jazz recordings doesn't mean it can't be done. It doesn't have to sound 'modern' or 'contemporary', it's a versatile instrument. Listen to Tommy Warrington with Buddy Rich, he played 100% legit jazz on a fretless Precision without ever going down the jazz-funk route.
Maybe . . . just maybe , one could play"straight" jazz and swing styles on guitar bass but why. Can't be denied that upright has a percussive physicality that is so dancing. . . pushes so hard. And the guitar bass is the premier instrument for other styles.
As a musician, I can’t remember a single interview with Marcus where I didn’t learn something or benefit from his insight. I truly love this man.

We also had basements in Manhattan. My folks had a Brownstone in Harlem on 124th street. Had a nice basement!!

Mr. Steve Swallow is a great example for electric bass in Jazz.
Wilton Felder played on most of the jackson 5 recordings- most of the hits, at least.
He played on I want You Back and The Love You Save, every bassist on Motown after Jamerson in the 60s and 70s, pretty much emulated his style.

Also every bassist now days tries to sound like Marcus. But he doesn't let that stop him from playing. No one can arrange music like him.
