MTD used to make mowers and small lawn tractors for Montgomery Ward. Model numbers were prefixed with TMO. The ag tractors, big snowblowers and tillers were made by Gilson, prefixed by GIL.
Sometimes they standard the guts of the products, across all brands, but do they ever make them as well or better than the best product line was before the acquisition?
Very nice job Taryl. The simplest was is usually the best and using the adjustable wrench really makes it easy. I used a piece of firewood from my wood pile which had a vee that matched perfectly and just tapped and rolled the pulley for the proper fit. I HAVE had to throw a few of those cheap press pulleys on the roller lathe to open the pully sheath up a little bit wider so they wouldn't jump off when the belt is in slack mode excellent quick fix Taryl ! 😁👍
@@benjurqunov angles can vary on different types of pullies generally the belt has enough flex in it to conform to the pulley sheath after you open it up and the belt still hold up pretty well for most of your light duty applications
When Sears was dying they started having their hand tools made in China and switched their mowers from AYP Husqvarna to MTD. That should tell something about MTD's quality.
my ex girlfriend bought a simplicity zero turn. after three years the head gasket went out due to the fact they don't have a fire ring within the head gasket. Had to make up a total new head gasket that included a fire ring , three years later and it still works perfect. Never have to change a belt on that thing. Only other thing was the seat and the battery.
Some of the newer, cheaper MTD Craftsman's were real junk. They were basically using a flat washer as a belt guide on some models with the vary speeds and those belts came off constantly. I used a vice to bend those flat washers in half to keep the belt from jumping.
My Craftsman tractor is 14 years old this year. I replaced the idle pulley bracket this spring. Other than that just the 2 belts about 6 years ago and the PTO cable. It's been a GREAT tractor. The only thing I have to do to it now is fix a slow tire leak on the front left side.
I am on the 3rd season with my craftsman t100.....no belt problems as of yet....thanks for the tip on this....now I will know what to do if mine starts throwing the belt.
I just took the safety switch of the foot pedal and taped it up. Never have to mash the pedal and the belt never comes off! I have a Cub Cadet that I got off of the side of the road for free!
Good stuff. I laughed and learned something at the same time. The video also reinforces the fact that after 170 years of belts and pulleys we're so damned cheap we won't pay for a quality product anymore, thus junk pulleys.
I worked Gen'l Power Eqpt. in Harvard, IL. They made mowers & snowblowers, among other things. There's no reason that MTD couldn't have either modified the die to make the pully wider, or incorporated a spacer. A pulley is usually two halves spot welded together.
Unfortunately that doesn't work. They purposefully make the belt sizes strange and you'll have trouble finding anything but the OEM replacement that fits. Ask me how I know LOL
When I was in high school and college, I worked for a hardware store and we sold MTD made tractors. After ordering parts and doing service calls, I came to the realization that MTD must have run a special on springs and pulleys to run their equipment.

Sears model numbers always include a manufacturer code, which is the first three digits. 248.XXXXXX are MTD made tractors, 917.XXXXXX are Husqvarna (what used to be called AYP) made tractors for Sears. differing manufacturing codes are applied to the model numbers virtually any merchandise sold throughout Sears history. So i obviously have a hard time not hitting these rocks and stones while on my ride on mower and they're messing up my brand new blades !! How do you deal with a situation like this ? I can't walk around my whole property 24/7 looking for rocks. Especially under this killer Sun we have this summer. I don't wanna keep the blades up too high or I won't be able to see where i just mowed. HELP !!
Hire a landscape company to grade the property with a skid steer and a rock picker attachment. Although, if you've been picking rocks for years, that might be a waste of money. Idk .
I have a around 93 model cub, it has a 4" thick stack of service history, the gear box is a bit noisy in low gears, I think it could use grease, maybe some 80w90, with some Lucas will quiet it down a bit, would you object? Until I mowed over a vacuum type hose, with wire inside it, got it all tangled around the blades, it was fine, aside from the original tires on it, they were basically still holding air, I need to get it out and fix it, I have a ralley roper I'm thinking about pulling the deck,. And finding a 8-10 hp engine to build a pull behind mower to either pull behind the cub, to mow 2x the width, or pull behind a 4wheeler! I have a 1.5 acres of over grown land, and having a basically small bush hog, or brush hog, something that will cut saplings,. And briars , maybe after a couple years of mowing, it will eventually Grow grass, I also need a decent size generator, a belt drive unit would be nice! Any idea where I may find one, 120/220 25-30amps?
Taryl I'd like to see a video about placing a fuel shutoff on a mower or small engine. Should it be installed before or after the fuel pump etc. I like to run all the gas out of my mowers some with fuel pumps and some gravity feed.
It would be nice to see a chart of the better lawnmowers to buy listed by best bang for the buck to where we could head off future trouble by not buying junk.
Taryl I thought the above was you and contacted them on telegram which they asked me to do. They stated I had won a prize and wanted money for shipping. That felt off. When I came back to your channel the contact was instagram not telegram. I thought you should know what’s going on.
The more permanent fix as well as gratifying would be to just push it on the nearest train crossing and say it ran out of gas and don't forget to wave bye- bye to it as it reaches orbit.

If that replacement belt is a Stens 265-621 they are mis-cut junk made in India. They have the wrong profile and will jump off and drive you nuts!!! The OEM belt is a Gates 6941, which is a 5L410K I put two of those junk belts on a Cub Cadet for a customer before I realized the problem. Get your hand on The Gates belt. The Gates info was taken directly off the OEM belt which had nothing wrong with it. I only replaced it because I had to replace the long drive belt. So I figured, While I'm in here I might as well replace both. No good deed goes unpunished!! Made in India P.O.S. Have a great day.......... I hope this helps, as your sharing has always helped me!
What is the fix for the crappy deck engagement cable for MTD-produced lawn tractors? Have had several break on my Troy-Bilt Horse XP (I know...condolences).
Hey Taryl, could you recommend a high frequency parts washer for my home shop? Oh yeah, I like the way you fixed the crapsman pulley, simple and effective and low cost! Keep the info coming!
Check out youtuber '' Project Farm'' . this guy, tests/compares all kinds of stuff/things/tools/degreasers/drill bits/etc etc. HE should have one, on ultrasonic cleaners.
If you're doing this a lot, find a rod the correct size needed to spread it enough Then use the rods diameter to and push it into opening and it will evenly spread both flanges at same time
or just get a narrow and a bit shorter of a belt and it'll fit right in the groove perfectly. my dad has a hydrostatic craftsman and never cleaned out the mowing deck , plugged it up and the center blade stop turning and he burnt the belt. he decided to make a wider belt fit thinking the narrow belt was the problem. the wider belt liked to flip in the pulley thus causing damage to the belt. they come factory with a narrow belt an certain fools decide to put a wider belt on.
Hell, I thought you were gonna give us a replacement pulley. That kind of jerry-rig pulley tweak is the kind of thing I'd do(I'm a cheap SOB)--it's nice to see my "technique" validated by someone who knows what they're doing! Now, I wonder if there's a way to chuck this up in the lathe and roll it out to smoothly widen the gap. Probably would cost more to build a rig than find a replacement pulley!
You can easily see that that original pulley was made for a standard "V" belt. What were they thinking. So glad they tested everything before releasing it to the public. MTD makes most models/brands of so called "Garden Tractors / Riding Mowers". They get worse every year for more money.

Until I mowed over a vacuum type hose, with wire inside it, got it all tangled around the blades, it was fine, aside from the original tires on it, they were basically still holding air, I need to get it out and fix it,
I have a ralley roper I'm thinking about pulling the deck,.
Yeah, that's a good question, I want to do the same thing and was wondering where to install it
It would be nice to see a chart of the better lawnmowers to buy listed by best bang for the buck to where we could head off future trouble by not buying junk.
Taryl I thought the above was you and contacted them on telegram which they asked me to do. They stated I had won a prize and wanted money for shipping. That felt off. When I came back to your channel the contact was instagram not telegram. I thought you should know what’s going on.
The more permanent fix as well as gratifying would be to just push it on the nearest train crossing and say it ran out of gas and don't forget to wave bye- bye to it as it reaches orbit.
or just be nice and donated to someone. A few minor fix issues and those machines are pretty good
Don't you mean adjustable spanner.. lol looks a little wonky to me bahahah
That wrench is called a "nut rounder".
@@michaellipke3374 lol
lol with all due respect teryll lol I belive it’s because belt stretch now Adays is brutal , simple belt guide would fix this also but belts gonna wear in regardless.
Toss a one piece belt guide and send it lol
Love your channel man we’re a lot alike 😂🤝 straight shooter make it work 🔥🔥🔥 got my sub man
Thanks for calling out crap when you see it.
Thank you my teacher pending the pulley will be a nice easy fix I rather have an MTD then STDs
I have a Greenfield. They made them good about 40 years ago.
@@petersack5074 I will do it!
Common sense fix for a "Moronic Tractor Design". Very nice Taryl !!!
You should consider a flat washers slightly larger diameter then the pully on top .just a piece of sheet metal drilled and cut round .
Now nowTaryl, MTD has a long rich history of designing cheap junk. At least they are consistent. 😂😉
If you're doing this a lot, find a rod the correct size needed to spread it enough
Then use the rods diameter to and push it into opening and it will evenly spread both flanges at same time
or just get a narrow and a bit shorter of a belt and it'll fit right in the groove perfectly. my dad has a hydrostatic craftsman and never cleaned out the mowing deck , plugged it up and the center blade stop turning and he burnt the belt. he decided to make a wider belt fit thinking the narrow belt was the problem. the wider belt liked to flip in the pulley thus causing damage to the belt. they come factory with a narrow belt an certain fools decide to put a wider belt on.
Excellent!
I recently had a 1992 Craftsman 36" tractor, belt would always slip off of the large pulley on top of the transmission. Opposite problem!
I worked at MTD in the late 70's we made good mowers back then in Cleveland Ohio...
that was then. and i will say one thing mtd 990 garden tractors are beasts
You can easily see that that original pulley was made for a standard "V" belt. What were they thinking. So glad they tested everything before releasing it to the public. MTD makes most models/brands of so called "Garden Tractors / Riding Mowers". They get worse every year for more money.
I have a 20+ year old John Deere lawn tractor that still runs fine but if I had to buy a new riding tractor what would y’all recommend?
Thanks RATS ! !
What is that a half inch pulley for a 5/8 belt?
Looks like that is a special super strong belt. It isn't a standard V belt.
If MTD is junk, what manufacturers do you recommend?
Thank you
How bout changing the belt to a V belt? Although that fix this is simple!!!!
If a V belt would work, they would have used one at the factory to save a few dollars. The super belt is needed in that application.
The pulley is missing a retainer stud.
I've see ln where u need to bend the post towards the pulley to keep belt on.
