- On a busy week of news as MPs return to Parliament, Nish and Coco are joined by the Labour MP Jess Phillips. She gives her take on the investigation into Angela Rayner’s tax affairs, and reveals the toll it’s taking on her party’s deputy leader.
A discussion on Iran’s unprecedented attack on Israel leads Jess to reveal her family links to Iran, and there’s some rare praise for Rishi Sunak for his anti-smoking legislation. The clip of Truss on LBC reminded me so much of Philomena Cunk that I wondered if it wasn't Diane Morgan doing an impression of Liz Truss!
Philomena Cunk is intelligent, Liz Truss is batshit crazy.
She has become a complete parody of herself.
I miss being Jess's constituent (homemove) but hearing her being sweary and passionate has reminded me how much
I actually like the show to look again at the Cass report because it is important to note that as someone who literally just came from a Glasgow protest where the local gender clinic is now no longer offering treatment to under 18's off the back of this report the real harm it is already doing is not being covered. Trans people where not included in the research by design, no researcher out of the dozens were trans no trans patients were consulted no workers at gender clinics were asked about their lived reality within the system. The Cass Report is not advocating for trans people it is pushing an agender that it thinks they want even though they are screaming at them it isn't. It also dismissed the studies of over 200 papers for not being double blind tested even though that is not the standard for long term health care because it general cant be. Like how do you double blind test a treatment of a trans 14 year old ethically. Not a single labour MP who advocated for the Cass report had read the whole thing the day after cause it is 400 pages and so it is bullshit that they did. It included as a footnote a youtube channel as a source of information which aside from the fact this is a far right chat show, youtube channels are not peer reviewed and their evidence should not be being used in a report on UK Trans health policy.
Just a few things to add to that.
Cass has worked with Desantis on his anti trans bills.
On Twitter Cass follows anti trans groups.
The report leaned on the disproven theory of rapid onset gender dysphoria (social contagion)
1/3 of healthcare professionals in one of the surveys ticked the box to say they don't believe trans kids exist yet their views were accepted & included in the report including one who was quoted saying he hoped the report would protect him from non affirming treatment for trans patients (a flowery way of saying Conversion Therapy).
The Cass report recommends treating those up to 25 as minors
The Cass report very clearly had made its conclusion from the offset & then excluded research that didn't back up their predetermined view.

I've written a similar response and suggested not to give the report credibility without having knowledge of its shortcomings, and to interview a prominent trans journalist on Twitter, but my comment was deleted or repressed, I can't see it anymore.

She's also alleged to have orchestrated the removal of Dawn Butler from the Labour Women's group in Parliament and despite constantly saying how outspoken she is, has been silent about Apsana Begums treatment by the party... it could be a coincidence that these are all non-white mps, maybe it's just factional...
But then how will any politician ever act if they're constantly scared of offending one group or another. We'll end up with a bunch of tailor's dummies in parliament, nobody doing anything for fear of repudiation. In fact we're almost there.

What is being suggested is that generalized, ungrounded expressions of contempt should not be aimed at Black women in public, given that they represent two vulnerable demographics. Public figures should make their criticisms based on policy, words and actions, not mere likeability, because women and Black people consistently lose out in popularity contests.

Why is it always a policy of making it hard for people to do something? Why isn't the focus turned to companies making noxious products? Instead of banning smoking, ban the additives - tobacco only, and with filters. Ban disposable vapes, and ban all flavours - basic PG-VG mix with a bit of nicotine. Back to basic dull products, no additions, no marketing.
Because they're incredibly rich and powerful and have been sabotaging efforts at both research and regulation for decades? In any case, you seem to be in favour of the goal, so why does this particular method get up your nose?

Also a horrendous problem here in Australia, has always been but only in the last decade is it starting to get the appropriate public attention. The cass review is a deeply transphobic document that ignored almost all science on transition, written by someone who consulted with transphobic groups and even someone associated with ron f*cking desantis. The report recommends limiting even social transition! That’s just using a different name and wearing different clothes! It’s a total disgrace that anyone is treating it as a reasonable review, but especially a progressive podcast. Listen to what trans people are saying about it, and then try again.

I'm a stupid, idiotic smoker. I'm going to be sixty in October and, touch wood, my health so far is OK. I have stopped and started again so many times. I once stopped for 8 years and still started again! Yes, I know, I'm an arse. I would love a complete ban on smoking and the sale of cigarettes right now, let alone this gentle plan. I know I would be fine and just get on with it. One of the paths back into smoking is just being in an environment, most often the pub, where you are exposed to other people who are smoking. Maybe I should stop drinking too! 😂But one thing at a time hey? Yup, yup, and yup. I'm mid-40s and have been chuffing away for 30+ years. 100% behind banning cigarettes. It's not an addiction, it's a habit, and no one worthy loses out by them not being available. Zero benefit and a huge cost to both body and wallet.

Jess is fully establishment, there is going to be no change while she's around, that boat has sailed. She said it's a whole waste of time at about 10 minutes.
She loves an election she says, and watches reruns of '97... Not 2017 where Labour had the largest share of the vote since Atlee, her response then was entirely different.
Maybe we just should wait and see, rather than make assumptions that nothing will change once Labour are in government. I prefer to be more optimistic.

@M2Mil7er Agree. I think in the fullness of time (Tardis territory again) we'll see how change was denied by others and democracy was (and still is) being subverted. Even within the Labour Party democracy has been truly subverted, which doesn't bode well for national democracy.

This has been such a crap week as an American who follows left(ish) British news sources. Watching people and organizations who I generally respect talk about the Cass report as if it isn’t a steaming pile of obvious transphobic garbage is so deeply disillusioning. The transphobia here isn’t better but it isn’t as omni-present and I can reasonably expect most left of center people to realize they are being fed bullshit. The repeated realization that that isn’t true in England makes me so sad for my trans siblings there.
It really is terrible. As a British trans person, i feel sick from anxiety most of the time now. It’s hard to live my life with all this constantly around me.

As a woman, I feel that women are strong enough to handle criticism by other women. To worry they can't and that "we girls need to stick together" seems condescending. Even if it's another woman doing the condescending.
As a POC, I feel that there's no need to jump on a bullying bandwagon for clout. Deriding Abbott for her many failings is perfectly fine. Showing off about a general, unsubstantiated contempt for her suggests Philips has no clue about how bad things can be for Black women in the UK, or perhaps that she just doesn't care. It's graceless and it's bullying.

Cass was very floored, she discounted a lot of valid research. Wes Streeting has turned his back on the trans community, so the trans community expect a rough time under Labour (so do I). I hoped this excellent podcast was going to drill into Cass report deeper. 🙏🏽

@@alice1374 I been thinking about this, a lot. If she was illogically LFI, then there’s no way she’d have resigned from the shadow front bench over calling for a ceasefire. My theory is, based on more thinking and trying finding logic behind this is that: LFI exaggerates how many people actually support them by adding names to their website, to represent themselves as if they have power and more power than they actually have. Again a theory but think there’s probably some merit in it.

There does seem to be some in progressive circles who view being left-wing as an 'us vs them' situation. I'm left-wing not because I want to make enemies, but because I want society to help everyone, not just small sections of society. There are many left-wing policies which are designed to bring down male su*cide rates. So it is a genuine shame if she does take this attitude of feminism being a 'men vs women' stance when in truth it's about finding solutions to benefit the majority of people in society.
Jess Phillips is simply awesome. An MP that actually does the job she was elected to do.

One side-effect of this may be to legalise cannabis. The loss of tax income from tobacco will have to be replaced (though long term it will save the NHS a fortune not treating smoking related diseases), so Amsterdam-style coffee shops would fill that gap nicely.

I thought the feminism point Coco was making was a little off, when the show itself has talked about the weird pressure they have felt as south east Asians to support Rishi and Suella.
That's not the point. The general view, which I find plausible, is that Philips was leveraging the widespread and vitriolic hatred suffered by Abbott to gain easy cred. In fact, I'm no Abbott fan, but the level of abuse and groundless attacks she has received constantly for decades is completely bananas. There is no doubt in my mind that a large proportion of it is racially motivated, which is why soft critics/near allies of Abbott should be *much* more circumspect. The intrinsic and historical failures of feminism vis-a-vis people of colour is very well documented.

Great response from Jess on Coco's absurd line of questioning. I was so surprised the conversation went there and Jess handled herself with poise.
How is it an absurd line of questioning to ask her about her treatment of Diane Abbott? Especially given the Labour parties history of anti-black racism and unwillingness to support POC members of their party, including Abbott, when they are dealing with racial abuse and systemic mistreatment?
There's nothing absurd about challenging white feminists about their behaviour towards people of colour.
Is Jess on the friends of Israel teet?
Eugene Mirman had a standup bit about his fraudulent LinkedIn accounts claiming to be top executives of various highly recognizable brands... and the cease and desist letters he has received. So, standup could be big on LinkedIn in its own way.

Glad other people buzz off watching election coverage. I've watched (or kept a keen eye) on those I was old enough to care about even when I really shouldn't have. For some reason it's invigorating even though the results are terrible. I'm not quite sad enough to watch old ones lmao but at least she actually is a politician.
Having said all that... oh god Jess Phillips, really? Ugh she's a hateful woman. It's hard to believe she genuinely didn't mean to brag in the press about saying F Off to Dianne Abbot when she has multiple bullying incidents, a lot of which she's doing publicly (twitter for instance).
She says it herself, "women feel like they need to be super tough" I'm sure she's speaking from experience, the problem is she's one of those who's done a full loop with it to now be the instigator. SHE'S the type of person people are probably afraid to look weak for.
It generally kind of annoys me how she acts like she doesn't understand how her demeaning behaviour towards relates to sexism and racism beyond "well it doesn't mean we all have to get along" but then relates war straight back to "manny" and if we had more women this might not be happening... tbh we've had some aggressive female leaders in the Uk alone and its much less linked to sexism than the dianne abbot stuff.

Coco is dead right on the Philips-Abbott story. Personal insults should not be thrown against women of colour in public, precisely because they *already* get a raw deal from open and closet racists. Philips concludes by saying she didn't intentionally do so, and this is credible. Implicitly, she recognises that she stoked an already unfair situation, and this is why she should have apologised as soon as the story came out. She didn't commit a mortal sin, but her comment was graceless, unfair and ignorant.

Not a fan of Coco's oblique accusations of racism. Telling someone you don't like to fuck off isn't racism or misogyny. Laughing at an impressionist who's done a bunch of voices including yours and your disliked coworker's isn't racism or a betrayal of feminism or whatever Coco was on about. Jess has it exactly right - feminism is all about _treating people equally_ and that includes disliking people you dislike and not having to pretend just because she's a woman.
As a progressive _(in America, not the UK, so maybe this isn't as true there)_ I get tired of other progressives attacking the bona fides of someone they know for absolute certain is an ally. Don't obliquely accuse Jess Phillips of racism and anti-feminism just because she doesn't get on with Diane Abbott. If they both take potshots at each other in the press don't just reflexively side with the black woman and accuse her opponent of racism and/or misogyny, even if Diane has been the target of racism and misogyny in the past. If you think the attacks on Diane Abbott smack of racism and/or misogyny, maybe ask about the context or reasoning instead of trying to push someone never to criticize her for fear of reciprocal attacks.
I really like Jess Phillips' style of PR. You hear so often about two people who clearly hate each other but go on in the press about how they "get along fine" and "have a good working relationship" or whatever, even while everyone knows it's false. Jess just says "We don't get on" but "we're not fighting in the halls". We've all had coworkers we don't like but can work with. "We don't like each other but we're all adults here" is about the most relatable thing someone can say, and gives me more respect for the speaker.
No, it's not about "treating all people equally" for the very obvious reason that people do not all start from the same position of advantage. Feminism, like any humanism, is about treating people *justly*, in order to correct historical inequalities. Diane Abbott has been a punching bag for racists for decades, and Philips should be mindful of this, restricting her public criticisms to substantive and specific disagreements, rather than popularising the idea that it's ok to be unpleasant and abusive to people just because you "don't like them". This "Mean Girls" model of civic discourse is intrinsically racist and sexist because in a society where racism and sexism still exist, POC and women will always be easy targets.

Your contention that, because Diane Abbott has been a target for years, she should get special treatment from everyone, is idiotic.
It is _disempowering_ to treat someone with kid gloves. It _engenders_ attacks to treat someone differently than everyone else _even if that treatment is better._ The way you treat an MP fairly _is by holding them to the same standards you would hold any MP to._ You don't pretend to like them, you don't act like they're special, you don't treat them differently, good or bad.
It is insulting to Jess Phillips, a lifelong progressive feminist, to say that her statements are equivalent to some asshole misogynist's dog whistles. Bollocks I'm sure there's plenty of people who Jess doesn't get along with, you don't go round swearing at people and even encouraging others to do so. It's also far from the only time Jess has been seen to be making targeted comments against women of colour. With these things you start to notice a pattern, she's obviously not just gonna flat out go "Yeah anyway I hate all women of colour and think they're beneath me".
What's even weirder about the "fuck off" story is that it quite probably didn't even happen, its even weirder for that to be a fictional flex.
@@Sophiex2024 Perhaps she _doesn't_ hate women of color generally or think they're beneath her. Maybe she's just a disagreeable or blunt person and the only comments you hear about are the ones against women of color. And that's kind of what I'm talking about - if she treats everyone equally badly that's not racism or misogyny, that's just a person who swears a lot and isn't very polite.
Now, I don't follow British politics closely and haven't heard much about Jess Phillips, so maybe I'm wrong and she's just a horrible closet racist, but I've heard _(and known)_ so many progressives with double standards for how to treat men, women, white people, and non-white people that I'm always suspicious. At least here in the US, incidents like that would certainly engender more criticism and notice among progressives if such comments were directed at a non-white person or a woman _(among conservatives it's just the opposite; they tend to get outraged when it's white men being sworn at)._ It's one of the things that annoys me the most about my ideological brethren.
@jgray2718 well there's 2 issues here, one is her very rude and unprofessional behaviour that personally I would say frequently tips into bullying. Even if you could honestly prove its not racist it's still vile.
Secondly it just seems like a weird coincidence if there's no correlation but the majority of events that are made public are those involving women of colour. The only other person she's made an explicit target of to my knowledge is Jeremy Corbyn, and he was the party leader. Bullies traditionally pick on people they perceive as "lower down the ladder" than themselves, there's an almighty amount of racism in the UK parliament, it seems to me that it's not the more likely option that this her behaviour is completely race blind but just by chance seems quite racist.
If we were like "charging" her with racism (obviously that's not a real charge), you'd have a point but it's entirely fair for her to be challenged on patterns of behaviour we can literally see. She's an MP for God's sake, they come on these things for publicity, they can handle a bit of scrutiny.
