This guy has played to 184,000 people in Rio de Janeiro with Paul McCartney. For over 30 years, he's stood beside artists including Chrissie Hynde, Norah Jones, Mark Knopfler and John Mayer, chosen for his innate musicality, versatility as a player and of course, genuine nice-guy persona. When he's not on the road or in the studio with the glitterati, however, you'll find him at home in the rolling hills of Dorset, writing and recording his own, solo and band material.
Robbie McIntosh's latest release is Turn Up For The Books, a collection of songs that brings together his predominantly blues and country influences on electric and acoustic six-string. "A song might present itself, y'know, mucking about with different guitars," he says in typically unguarded fashion as we go over the motivation and inspiration for the record. "Guitars inspire songs, they absolutely do - they usually come from the tone of the guitar."
Here, Robbie shows us the acoustic guitar and resonators that feature on Turn Up For The Books.
See him talk and play through the electric guitars on the album here: • Robbie McIntosh talks ...

I LOVE resonated guitars/dobro. Its amazing how full of a sound you can get from it. It just enhances the sound of a player trying to put an emotion into their song so well.

I meet Robbie, a few years ago he was doing a slide guitars course in Bath, he was a real gentleman and an inspiration, what I feel really sick about is I also owned a Mike Lewis maple guitar like Robbie's and like a fool I sold it, I've been kicking myself ever since

Did something similar meself when I was going bad many yrs ago- imagine a '58 335 in suitably worn condition with StarClub Hamburg stencilled on the bashedup case. Acquired from a fella 10 yrs prior in similar plight. Told me it was a Lennon backup. Oh my that gat played so well...

I was lucky enough to be shown how to play the intro to The Pretenders song; '2000 Miles' by Robbie back in 2019 when he did a masterclass in Pocklington. My ham-fisted efforts are so funny to watch now and it's the most unintuitive riff I've ever learnt!. Robbie was so generous with his time and to be shown this by the guy that played with The Pretenders on the USA Live Aid was something special. Thanks Robbie!

Robbie McIntosh is huge, but he's mistaken about the Triolians. They were NOT wood bodied in the thirties as he claims. There was a brief period of a year and a half when National put out the first single cones in which they were wood bodies. This was from 1928 to half way through 1929. By mid 1929 until they stopped production of the Triolian they were all metal bodied.
