    Gretsch are making some amazing sounding resonators for the price point. I bought. One a couple of years ago and it plays and sounds better than most resonators twice the price. One of my favourite guitars.

    This a good comparative review. I first bought a Luna;it was very well built, but was designed mostly for amplification. So, I exchanged it for the "acoustic only" Gretsch "Honey-Dipper." That did the trick for me. I build acoustics, electrics, do repair and custom set-ups to thousandths of an inch. My other acoustic is a vintage Westerly Guild D 40. That is my second of that model. My first was a 3 digit serial numbered from Brooklyn, the truly first Guild luthierie shop before Newark. I learned to build while in law school and I sold that extra-vintage D 40 to buy the material for a full-on custom acoustic. Just the rosewood had been dried over 60 years. It was a spectacular OM size guitar, loaded with pearl and abalone, and my favorite fretboard wood, ebony. Sold for tuition for my daughter, but no bitterness ; she graduated cum laude as a certified Special Needs teacher, later got her Master's in same, and is now the Special Needs curriculum director for a whole nearby district, having also served as a principal for a special needs school.

    Very nicely played Sir and thank you for staying away from the usual cliched pieces people usually play when they pick up a resonator! For me the Gold Tone stood out a mile---the loudest and fullest sounding. Then I checked out the prices and can see why. Of the others I thought the Alligator had a very decent sound.

      I do as well! I actually like the "Boxcar" model that Gretsch makes a little more than the one in this video, which sounds a tad thin to me probably due to the use of the biscuit cone rather than the spider in the "Boxcar", but it's all about personal preference. Both I think sound a little better and are better constructed than the Epiphone-made Dobro "Hound Dog", which costs more only due to the brand name I think. Still a good reso guitar though!

    Nice comparison and great playing! I bought a Gretsch Alligator about 18 months ago and I am very happy with it. I think the value for money and build quality outweighed others I tried, such as the Dobro. That could be just luck.
    It has a warmer tone than the recording would suggest 😃. Thanks for the vid!

    Killer playing and demo my friend. I have a couple of questions if you don't mind. Firstly, can you say in your heart of hearts that you'd be able to discern the difference between a gold tone beard and a higher end beard if you were to hear each blindfolded? And even if you would be able to tell the difference [you may have heard both enough times to know], is this difference characterised by an objective inferiority/superiority in sound quality? Or let's say if you had never heard any Beard guitars before and were played samples of each, do you think you'd know which one was triple the price of the other? I'm just curious, cos I've been watching some blindfold challenge vids on the Andertons youtube channel lately and it's got me re-evaluating everything! When I first heard the beard odyssey demos for example, I felt certain that I was hearing a ''better'' more expensive sounding tone. And maybe I was right. But if I'm honest with myself I think a lot of it comes down to expectation too. And I personally don't think I'd be able to reliably guess correctly which guitar was 3k and which was 1k based purely off my ears. But perhaps that attests to my crap ears! Who knows, food for thought. Secondly- which of the four are your favourites? I'm torn between the gold tone and the steel bobtail.

    • @PeachGuitars

      There are obvious differences between these models and Nationals. This video is actually a follow up to a National Resonphonic Guitars overview, and knowing that those instruments aren't in everyone's budget, we wanted to show what else was available. The Nationals have their own, wonderful thing going on, and it's difficult to describe without playing one, but these instruments surprised everyone. Don't discount them because they don't say National on the headstock!

      Ander Suárez Martínez you’d probably have to change the orientation of the saddles. Looking at my Gretsch Boxcar right now and the saddles are higher on the bass side and a little shorter on the treble side. As for the nut, you might have to modify the string slots or just get a new nut and file/slot it yourself.

      @goodun2974 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@damienalvarez2957 , Ordinary acoustic guitars would have the top braced differently for the bass strings side of the guitar versus the treble strings, but that might not apply at all to a resonator guitar. In all honesty I really don't know.

    Gretsch Honey Dipper for me. Have one on order. Have had National resophonic and Republic resonators before. National was amazing, but I find the Honey Dippers sounding better than Republics. For the price, I think the Gretsch will do the job. The Nationals are just too pricy these days.

    The Paul Beard Gold Tone knocks all the others out. The best sounding by far. All the others lacked the warmth and "juiciness" of the Paul Beard.

      Not that much difference, truth be known. Having a National guitar is all about status

      The National steelbody resonators I've played cost about 4 to 10 times the guitars in this video and sound very different, though "better" is strictly about preference. To me, they are warmer sounding with a smoother tone than say, the comparable steelbody Gretsch in the video, which has a much more "twangy" sound. Both are great so it's really about the sound you're looking for. I know people that prefer some of the guitars in this video over Nationals, and vice-versa. In my opinion they all sound great!

      mark ewings - Thats nonsense . I own a Republic Reso and a National. There’s no way you can compare the two. The National is far superior in craftsmanship and tonal qualities to a cheaper resonator. The Republic is Chinese crap and I sold my Paul Beard because it sounded terrible. The old saying goes - You get what you pay for.
