For me hearing other creators stories always is more helpful than listening to tip videos on how to grow a channel. What is so special about TH-cam is that this is a community and we can all help each other and thrive! Here's another video with even more creators that goes through mistakes to avoid on your channel: th-cam.com/video/YtAY8OZcztw/w-d-xo.html
Excellent video - lots of great advice. I'm no expert, but I found your shift to the second camera angle a little jarring and distracting at times and totally not needed as you were cutting to the other creators.
Your videos have totally pushed me to upload my first video. I spent days watching these how to videos, until I realised that I needed to upload. I got my niche but I am worried that there are not many people doing this type of thing. But I feel confident, I am spending 90% of my time planning my content and no time editing because I am so keen to get stuff uploaded. But I want to thank you guys for all your awesome advice
Hello @Jeven Dovey your videos came across my way today and i'm hooked into it. I just started my youtube journey and im learning new things from you. Thank you for this video. I decided to come out and bring myself to the open. I will do my best to face the camera now and tell my story. Thank you for the inspiration.
Thanks for having me Jeven! Love the video. Another tip to anyone joining the filmmaking/tech community, it's gotta be one of the most supportive and awesome communities/niches on the internet.
Not getting started is a huge problem. Took me ages to take the plunge. Precisely because of perfectionism. So glad I did eventually decide to get on with it. Even though the videos were better than they could have been if I didn’t take the time to do the research, looking back they really weren’t great. But things have improved enormously, even in just 7 months. Do the research. But at some point just stop. And start making videos!
I think that not chasing perfection is good advice, but my problem is that I really do enjoy editing and pushing my skills as a filmmaker, even more than the cars and motorcycles that are my subject, so I find myself struggling to keep up with one video per week when I’m trying to learn new editing techniques and tricks along the way. I just had to tell myself to let it go and do what makes me happy. TH-cam is essentially my third job, so it needs to stay positive and fun because that gets communicated to the audience as well. 😎
I love this guy buy I can’t concentrate on what he is saying, all I can think about it is that there is waaaay too much cuts to different camera angles. :(
It has been a fashion at some point in time, seemingly. Today, about two years after the original comment, I’m glad that that style didn’t age well, and got out of fashion. Still good topic for a “ mistakes to avoid” video. 🙃
Started a month ago...this is great stuff. The psychology of getting started, so helpful, not the same old advice on every other channel. Really enjoyed it and gave me hope for a new channel start.
Great video, these are super useful tips for new youtubers! I feel like the hardest thing for me to do is STILL figuring out my niche. I'm interested in and want to do so many things, because I'm really passionate about all of them and I know there must be people like me out there but I think at the beginning, my channel will feel a bit messy or all over the place. The other thing I'm struggling with is retention. I heard a good retention rate is at least 40% but mine is around 30%.
I noticed that many TH-camrs feel the same and they mention not being themselves as their biggest mistake. I start thinking that perhaps ‘not being yourself’ is a part of the natural process of growing up as a TH-camr and maybe we all need to go through that phase.
I see the benefits of staying withing a single niche but as human beings we are all multi faceted and have multiple interests. If you do have two or three different niches or genres that really peak your interest then the way to go may be start multiple channels. This doesnt mean you are going to focus on them all equally, you could have a main channel that is your primary youtube channel and niche or genre then another channel that is more like a side or hobby channel, you may only post to the secondary channel once a month or maybe only once a quarter or something but sometimes you need a channel to exorcise those ideas for videos that may not be part of your main channel genre or niche from your brain's backlog. Also as a creative always doing one genre and niche can lead to stagnation, it's good for business and audience building but in terms of your growth as a creative artist and feeding your creative spirit variety is important.
Hey Jeven: I really appreciated the advice about from you and your guests about not regarding your gear (or lack there of) as a limitation, and also not getting bogged down on searching for perfection as a beginning channel.
I enjoy talking about tech but my friends say I dont make content people want to watch. Its hard to keep going when not many people are supporting . oh well I just privated my old videos and just started back up a few weeks ago lets see how it goes. Edit: forgot to mention how great this video is thanks.
We started our fishing channel about 2 years ago. We getting views but not subscribers. We love what we do. We are having a blast. We watch your videos and other content creators, but still feel like we are missing something. Thank you for what you do. You always have a lot of great tips 😊
Glad to hear! Make sure you check out the rest of the videos in this series. So much good info from so many awesome creators: th-cam.com/video/xOpJdHiIwhQ/w-d-xo.html
I love all these videos, guys theres NO time like now!!! I started and its starting to take off, i wish I didn’t wait so long! Lets go out there and get it 💪🏼💪🏼
I love these videos! I learn so much from all of these successful YT creators! Also, they give insightful information about being a YT. I hope one day to get that level of success where I can share my mistakes when I started through other YT'ers!
Great video man. My first year on TH-cam I thought I wanted to be a travel vlogger, I traveled a bunch and made vlogs. They did not do well at all. I threw in a few reviews and tutorials to my channel and that's what built my audience, it was surprising, I figured "if I'm vlogging from these awesome foreign countries why wouldn't people watch?" But alas I found out super quick people don't typically care, so now I'm expanding on my niche and hoping for the best! Thanks for the advice.
I started as a travel vlogger. Shot over 200 vlogs. It was fun and learned a lot but it wasn’t long term. Found a niche that works better for me and that’s when my channel took off
yeah i also watch Aldryn's channel. on the other hand, i can relate to Kevin... but for my case, i have been remotely directing talents in the U.S from the Philippines for over ten years now. and until now i am still learning. it's an endless curve. thanks for the insight guys.
Gear doesn't limit me. I try do everything off my phone. But what is holding me back is depression. Any tips on dealing with depression so the content doesn't portray that way and is actually enjoyable?
I have an issue with exposure , so I think slow growth is key.We all want 1 million subs .I just want 1k loyal fans and that’s success for me in tube as I love commenting on my subs questions
This is extremely helpful! I'm stuck myself in picking my niche. I started my channel with beauty, tutorials etc. I did a few videos on weight loss, and those took off. I gained most of my subs from those videos. I've continued to make other videos in my niche, and not getting many views. So, does this mean my channel is in the weight loss algorithm?? :(
I’ve always tried to not focus too hard on my mistakes and learn from them 🙏🏾🙏🏾 As long as every video is better than the last, you’re on the right track!
Thanks for posting Jeven! I really appreciate the insight provided in this video and am gonna put into practice the lessons you and the other creators learned the hard way.
This is a good share. It’s so true that we need to learned from our mistakes and continue doing what your hearts desire to share information and learning while entertaining. Cheers for this one.
Love this dude, great advice here!! There's alot I should have learnt along time ago 😆 I'm unfortunately a stubborn mule so still making mistakes to this day but, learning and growing so it's all good. If you do another of those, I'd love it if you considered allowing me to be a part of it. Cheers dude 🙂👍
Thank you Jeven this really helps me. I'm sure gonna consider all these points for my content and channel. You do so hardwork really appreciated 👍🏻 Vlogger from Bahrain 🇧🇭
This is a great video!!! Could you do a video on how to get your audience to interact more? Because I ask all the time what people want to see from me and no one says anything! It gets a bit frustrating because as a content creator you want to make good videos that gets people’s attention but how would you know what to make if nobody ever responds to your questions? Anyways love the video, very educational!
I think that’s my issue. I feel everything needs to be perfect before I can record. I feel it comes from watching to much TH-cam. When I watch videos everything is nice neat decorated to the nines etc. It feels like in order to grow or be watched you have to have the nice studio background. You have to have the nice home. I mean that’s all you see. You don’t see anyone with all of those things being shared, recommended etc.
If you wait to have everything in perfect order before you start, you have a life of preparing and waiting, never to be creating or growing. If people judge your videos based on what’s in the background... they aren’t there for your content anyway. Delete comments and block them. If you only focus on other people’s background, are you actually there for the content? You can green screen or set up a little corner of your house/apartment/garage, closet.... kitchen. Go look at the first videos of many TH-camrs. Everyone evolves. Go. Create!
At first I thought exactly the same, that I need a nicer venue. And then I understood that my home for sure will not look any better within the next couple of months. And of course I have no chance for any sort of studio...so, I thought I would try and start with what I have. Though, would love to have a studio one day.
Awesome video and good advices! Love you new camera angel changes but it’s sometimes to fast changing the angels and gets a little bit distracting. Just my little opinion ;-) keep up your content I always learn so much from you ❤️
This is great. Thank you. I have followed Luria from when she was known as her alias. I still follow her. I'm sad so many unfollowed her. She's great. All of the creators really shared useful advice. Thank you to them and to you for pulling them together.
Good stuff, lots of great mistakes, all very good points! Those two points of view on sliders, that was some crazy CNN news anchor style shizzle Jeven!
This is Awesome!! Learning from others mistakes can really shorten your learning curve!!! Thank you so much for the tips Jeven And all the crew gathered up for this Video!!!!
I am concerned that I have healthy Nd lifestyle. I wonder if it’s niched down enough?? I’m also wondering if there is a way to find out what topics are trending on TH-cam

I totally prefer the ‘film’ edit look rather than the quick fire, teleshopping look
Good advice thanks 🙏
I really enjoy well-edited videos! And I do not like to much crazy improvisation. I think you have the right approach.
How to be a good youtuber
1. Have a beard
2. A deep voice
3. EXAGGERATED ARM GESTURES !
4. Be colorful crazy hair or face
also have a dslr camera, have sony vegas or premier pro, overexaggerate everything, and make sure to use clickbait titles
@The Prospectors lol
You forgot 'slow-mo coffee b-roll sequence' 😆
sweeeeeet, just gotta work on those arm gestures and I'll be a star
as a female...does the beard still help? lol...
No better video to watch right now! The days where mentors have to be right in front of you are long over - Take me to creator school! lets go!
I love this guy buy I can’t concentrate on what he is saying, all I can think about it is that there is waaaay too much cuts to different camera angles. :(
I was thinking the exact same thing. I prefer his older style of videos. The new background is cool though.
I thought that too. It’s a great video but the constant switch between camera angles is distracting.
To be honest, I actually like this new approach better. It seems more dynamic to me.
It has been a fashion at some point in time, seemingly.
Today, about two years after the original comment, I’m glad that that style didn’t age well, and got out of fashion.
Still good topic for a “ mistakes to avoid” video. 🙃
Same. It’s so distracting, it’s like he’s trying too hard 😂
