It was the first Multimedia Project before the Prequels, with a game, toy line, novel, comics, etc. It's actually a good book, and Lucas was pretty involved in the project. He even included Dash Rendar's ship in the Special Edition of A New Hope.

To be honest zero idea. The mods just put these two factions to fight during the CSA conflict is all I know xD.
