I know probably not as common as the Post Office or UPS store, but another option could be Fed Ex to one of their stores. I usually like to do “2 Day Ship”; I’m kind of impatient. 😉 Good informative info for those who are fortunate enough to be full time campers. 😏 Ram
Not just full-timers Ram, but anyone who needs a package delivered while traveling. We weren't full-timers when we started to need stuff on the road. We've had so little experience with FedEx that we didn't bring it up here; however, you're right that it works just like UPS explained here.
We appreciate the suggestion. Given that we're not retired or of retirement age, however, we really don't feel qualified to do a video on that subject.
Our pleasure. Thanks for watching! Some other commenters have told us that the local post office required them to fill out a form for general delivery; We have not had that experience ourselves.
I have been lucky as I have shipped packages to Family and friends on my route. I have also shipped to RV park offices. I called ahead and asked if they would receive and hold my package till I got there. Just an aside. I once called a place we had reservations and asked if they would receive a package and they declined. So I canceled my reservation and went anouther place that would receive my package. Good subject and good video as always.
@@GrandAdventure I've narrowed down my rv channels to GA. Over the past 3 years I've watched lots of channels but your quality and information are tops. Rv channels should be about destination not people.
Some post offices want you to sign a paper before you can do general delivery. I'm always in extreme rural areas; the closest Amazon locker (or Walmart) is 50 miles away. And for me, that's close!
Thanks for that very useful information!! Now I've got to figure out how to solve obtaining prescription drugs while on the road for an extended trip and still have insurance pay for it.
John, we do it through Walgreens as they're nationwide. We use their smartphone app to order refills and it allows you to send the refill order to any Walgreens location.
@@GrandAdventure Thanks for the response Mark. Unfortunately, for extended trips anyway, we use a small independent, local pharmacy. I've got to have a conversation with them.
That's great info Marc. I didn't know about the zip+9999 for general delivery. Nice. One option is to ship to your campground, if you're at an RV park with a manned office during business hours. Some campgrounds take deliveries for their camping customers, and others don't. Some charge a fee for forwarding to your campsite, others don't. And some campgrounds will kick you out of their campground if you receive a package at their campground without permission (IE: San Juan RV Resort, Montrose, CO) . So you absolutely need to ask the campground management about their policy, and get permission to have a package shipped to you at a campground.
Great topic for this week. We had to order a new camera while on the road last summer and were used to 1-2 day delivery from Amazon at home. Well we had to plan for a 5 day delivery in Island Park, ID and Henry’s Lake State Park was awesome with taking the delivery for us. Some parks don’t accept deliveries and it’s always best to call ahead and ask. Thanks Grand Adventure!
You bet! Yes, those of us who are used to two-day, one-day or even same-day Amazon delivery in more urban areas need to adjust our expectations for rural delivery addresses.
great tips -- thanks so much! ! I'l be in travelling in Colorado this year in a camper so now after watching this video it's time for a spreadsheet to add the different locations for USPS and UPS for the several counties I'll be camping over the summer!
@@WILDEBILL308 yes I am aware... I prefer spreadsheets for some things... I have all the apps for finding things etc. .. this is just MY way to easily visualize things, sort, arrange quickly and easily...
Clarification on pack-n-ship store. If we don't know how the retailer/shipper will be sending something, how do we utilize the pack n ship store? Do we provide that address to the retailer?
Yes, provide the address to the retailer when placing your order. If in doubt we always contact the retailer to determine which shipping carrier they use.
Valueable information right here!! Being prepared is important to enjoy your Grand Adventure. I feel better prepared after each of your videos. Keep up the great work.
That all depends. Obviously you can get the post office to hold mail for up to 30 days, or put a temporary forward on your mail to a single location. If you are a full-time traveler or need mail forwarded to different locations, there are services like America's Mailbox that will do that for you.
Mostly good info with some exceptions - #1 - Most if not all UPS Stores are privately own. They have all charged me 5 to 10 dollars to receive packages so I avoid them. The UPS website is the worst , it is focused on shipping and selling, when it comes to receiving, it sucks. I have never been able to get support in changing info for delivery, they force you to go to the shipper to reroute. #2 - The USPS list General Delivery for every post office I have researched. I've had many packages returned or redirected to another post office for pickup. This is more of a problem in cities with more than one post office, usually only the main Post Office downtown handles General Delivery. I go to the actual Post Office and confirm they will provide General Delivery, this has been my experience. #3 - FedEx stores seem to be company stores and have always provided excellent service. you failed to mention them.
I agree with your 3 points above. Plus, most Amazon drop boxes & hubs only take small and non-hazardous (no lithium batteries) packages. With Amazon, you never how they will ship: Amazon delivery, UPS or USPS. I have learned the hard way that UPS & Fedex won't deliver to a General Delivery address without the PO's street address. With the street address added, they will. If you know that it's coming UPS or Fedex, you can also have it shipped to their local distribution hub and pick it at no charge
@@saltyturtle5294 I can’t imagine that the Post Office would accept a package from FedEx or UPS for you! Am I missing something? I have UPS deliver to their distribution center instead of a UPS store to avoid fees charged at stores so that’s a good tip for people!
@@ROLLMEAWAY I just had it happen in Ft. Smith, AR. I forgot to add the street on a package to General Delivery via UPS and one via Fedex. Neither would deliver them until I added the street. The problem is not the PO accepting it, it is UPS or Fedex delivering. Once the street was added, both were delivered. In a town with multiple PO's, you MUST CALL to find out which one will accept General Delivery. Many PO's don't, even though the USPS website says they do. In a couple of small town PO's in AR, I had to explain to them what General Delivery was and then they did it. The USPS, being a typical bureaucracy, has a form to fill out to receive General Delivery -- many PO's will do it anyway without the form. As I said previously, when I know that it is UPS or Fedex, I have it sent to their distribution hub.
@@saltyturtle5294 I guess my confusion here is the term "General Delivery". In my experience it is used ONLY in the context of the USPS. It's not required for UPS or FedEx. All they need is the street address, they probably don't care who you are or if you are there. You, and possible the campground or whoever is receiving the package on your behalf, need your name and possibly the site number so they can find you or you can find your package among others.
@@ROLLMEAWAY The street address is required by Fedex & UPS to know where to deliver it, they won't go by only Zip Code. "GENERAL DELIVERY" is for the PO to know what to do with it once it is delivered to them. You are trying to apply logic to illogical entities. Maybe your experience will differ, I'm just relaying our experiences. Try it without the street address and see what happens. We have been cruising or RVing for several years and this works for us. Amazon is the main problem as you never know how they will ship and you can't specify. We have had single orders shipped 3 different ways in one order.
I’ve only used Amazon once on the road. Getting them to verify the address was the hard part. I’ve read that many campgrounds and parks won’t accept deliveries. I guess we lucked out.
That's always an option where permitted by the management, Rabbi, and we've done that ourselves -- like when my kayak paddle got stolen near Nashville and I had a new one shipped to Honeysuckle Meadows RV Park near Great Smoky Mountains National Park this summer because I didn't want some junk paddle from Dick's Sporting Goods. My concern has always been what if the shipment is delayed, and doesn't arrive until after we've left. That leaves the RV park responsible for returning the item. It also doesn't do anything to help if we're boondocking.
I know probably not as common as the Post Office or UPS store, but another option could be Fed Ex to one of their stores.
