I saw a tutorial from a model car builder that uses fine steel wool and white vinegar in a glass jar. It makes actual rust that you can the “paint” on with an old brush.
real rust, can't beat that lol.
@@MAJmufin nope, sure can’t.
@greywhizard that sounds interesting do you have a link?
@ it was in a modeling magazine, I think Fine Scale Modeler, a few years ago. I’m sorry, I don’t have a link. There’s also a possibility I watched it here on TH-cam…I consume a large amount of hobby content on here, Instagram and in print media.
Tried that a few years back. Very hard to use.
What the end result puts me in mind of is the effect I've seen historical modellers use, dabbing plastic putty onto tank plates then sanding it back slightly. The slightly lumpy texture looks like cast metal. Works here too.
I was thinking the same thing last night - thought I could stipple this stuff on and then basecoat over it with an airbrush to get that cast texture to it. Thanks for watching!
A really nice scale modelling trick that also uses plastic putty is this
Drill a small hole with a pin vince into the model. Don't go too deep, we don't want to go all the way through.
Fill the hole with plastic putty.
Take the rounded end of a brush and push it into the hole. This will create a domed indent with a small rim around the edge.
Congratulations, you've now got a realistic looking shell or bullet impact on the model.
This is an excellent method for a 'rust in place effect, where the surface corrosion remains at the point of corrosion, but it doesn't recreate the effect of rust streaking down from the point that is rusting. For that, the best effect seems to be oil dot streaking, where you put a small dot of the rust color at the point where the streak starts, then blend it down with a brush lightly dampened with mineral spirits.
I am right there with you, as I feel this part of our projects is the most fun. And that model looks fantastic!!! And funny story, since you mentioned patina effects on miniatures near the end of this video: the very time I ever saw one of your videos goes back about 7 years or so when I needed to paint oxidation effects on a GW miniature for our Adepticon team display. This was before GW made the technical paint we have now. You had an awesome tutorial of how to paint oxidation on the Imperial statue for 40K. Pachow! I watched and liked your videos ever since. Good show!
Great to see your painting skills aren't getting rusty, Unky Atom. Excellent video.
I see what you did there. Thanks for watching!
I like how it helps the parts look as if they still have texture from being cast metal ( as opposed to being made from rolled or stamped steel).
Exactly, that’s the hope. Thanks for watching!
That is probably the best rusted metal effect I've seen that didn't take forever to achieve! I am SO doing this on a tank next, thank you for the info!!!
Great tutorial - thank you!
That mini is B.A. love the stippling of texture paints. Tons of possibilitie. Really helpful.
I've been playing with Dirty Down (and really like the results I've gotten,) but I also like having different options, depending on the project. This looks really good for a "years of battle damage" as opposed to a "corroded from stagnant water exposure" look of Dirty Down. Just some observations.
Great video!
Excellent explanation and presentation Atom👍
I love doing this with bronze. Just start with a jade and turquois then do the bronze drybrush. BOOM, done.
Excellent video! I've been doing the silver metal color first with rust on top but I like how the opposite you did turned out
That is a great effect and a very simple application. Thank you!
Great tutorial. I love the finished cast metal look.
That looks awesome! Also so cool to see a DUST 1947/Tactics walker featured
That first model you showed was very good ! Look great
Thank you Uncle Atom! Very informative and I'm sold on this product now. I'm not too keen on Dirty Down Rust so recently I have been manually painting the rust colours but I've got terrain coming up soon so perfect time to try. The mini looks amazing too!
I always do something similar with the Vallejo rust effects set, by far my most used paints. It'll be nice to give the AP ones a try!
Came out lovely, it's a nice model too.
Now i don't have these snazzy rust paints (might change after seeing your impressive results) but doing similar things what i find really makes it pop is to mix in some dark blue/sea green (i think that's what its called, basically that dark turquoise colour) with your metallic of choice for the final drybrush. I don't know why but it just hits different.
Great Video, I also use a technique like this over the edges of decal, some times even most of the decal to just leave a little showing. I love the I still learn a thing or two when i watch videos of techniques that I already use. Thanks for making this.
The like button has been depressmented.
That looks excellent.
Nightshift here on the tube of Us has a texturing technique with diluted tamiya putty that I am going to try out on a titan that's in the mail. This rust technique would go very nicely over that texture.
Based on this video I got my hands on the Anchorite, and an STL for an alternative look (female face). Once the parts have cured and I have painted it I can share an image if you are interested and have a suggestion as to how (not sure links work particularly well on TH-cam. Mind, my paint job won't be as good as yours.
Appreciated you taking time for my son and I at LVO.
That’s a big reason that I like to go to conventions - to talk with viewers. Thanks for coming to talk with me, and thanks for watching!
Hey adam! I am running a Trench Crusade campaign in the Wausau area this April! Also will be running a larger full campaign weekend event in the summer!
Excellent effect! Thanks for sharing!
I been messing around to try and get a good rust lately and this looks like a super fun and easy technique! Thank you for sharing I can't wait to give it a try.
Currently building my own Anchorite Shrine, super helpful video, thanks!
Amazing work Atom! Will be using this for my Anchorite for sure!
Try adding a bit of green to your rust effects. It’s a very organic grimy look I use for prop making!
I used a similar technique for my Gasland's cars. I used cheap paint and baking soda for the texture. I stippled in stages from brown to orange with some gun metal mixed in. For scorched areas I added some black, it gave a convincing blistered look.
I'm 10 second in and .... I need that shirt.
Head to the Tabletop Minions website - use Google or check in the video description (putting links in TH-cam comments makes TH-cam angry for some reason) and then hit ‘merch’ in the menu. You’ll find all the shirts and other stuff there. Thanks for watching!
I've 3D printed an entire proxy 40k Knight army as "Ork Knights." I'm testing some painting techniques on some of the failed prints at the moment. I really want them to look like they were assembled in a rusty junkyard. This video came at the perfect time for me 😁
Looks super close to movie level details on the base colors. Will probably be copying this method.
I love those army painter brushes. Game changer for my painting
Lovely paint job! Lovely army painter advert 😜
It’s the stuff I love to use. Thanks for watching!
This is an excellent tip. Im a car modeler and this technique would work great for chassis detailing
Do we simply glance over the shirt that Uncle Adam is wearing? Merch in the future?
Merch now - go to the Tabletop Minions website and hit ‘merch’ in the menu there to find it and many others. Thanks for watching!
9:30 its like if you've ever seen a very very dirty light switch. Over time the whole face of the switch gets dirty, but once it reaches a tipping point where it can't get any more dirty then the dirt starts to get worn away so you end up with a clean spot where it gets used the most. It would be the same with an object thats completely rusted, when its made of metal thats so thick it wont rust through to the point it falls apart like say most cars do, instead over time it gets completely rusted over and that acts as a protective layer, but eventually if it keeps getting "used" some of that rust will get worn off. So this definitely helps sell the scale of these models, as only something made of extremely thick metal can become completely covered in rust and not fall apart. I'd say you could get away with doing a lot more harsh metallic sections, so long as they are made to look like weapons have hit them and made gouges through the rust.
Great Video! Thanks for this. I love rusty models.
That T shirt is bonkers in all the best ways
I'm reminded of 80s B horror film posters in, as you said, all the best ways.
Drawn by Will Kirkby, who did the art for Space Station Zero. It came out great! And it’s available in the merch store. Thanks for watching!
Great tutorial I have seen it done before but this time I understand it better
Considering this technique to make some Necrons
The sculpts they have make them perfect as an undead shambling horde with the overlords and crypteks serving as the more put together Lych, reanimating their foot soldiers.
Have you seen NightShift on youtube? He does some really lovely rust and mud effects. They're more historical diorama things, but has some really nice techniques similar to this that got me thinking the same. Great for rust, great for mud and grime. Any texture, really.
probably nothing new to you, but you never know!
This turned out very well indeed. Thank you for sharing this tutorial!
In all the best places this model now looks like very old castings, left outside and surface pitted with rust. The texture once drybrushed metal becomes the new original surface and being raised looks very much like the rust that remains on the panels is pitted into them. You could do the same with very, very old bronze castings just using very dark browns in place of rust paint.
After seeing this im so excited to get my hands on this model and get it painted
Awesome video uncle atom👍
That is a nice video I wish we had à community of that game at my place. The only game played is AOS or 40K.
The intro changed!
I don't like change...
Great video.
That model fricking ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I never noticed the biblically accurate angel on the chest plate before
Yeah, I tried to make it look like they would put gold leaf on it from time to time. Thanks for watching!
Eating breakfast while watching Uncle Atom is such a great time of the day
My favorite thing I ever did with rust is my Rusted Host Plague Marine Kill team where they are just COVERED in Fresh rust (Not made with this paint mind you) and old Rust in the recesses Fluf being that they have a condition that causes them to constantly exude rust from themselves onto anything they come in contact with.
I swear I had a moment of dread when I took those Green primed Marines that I had bronzed the trim on and stippled Browns and oranges across the whole thing... I went "Oh god I've ruined them" but then in the end once I picked out the non rust parts with the greens and fabric colours etc etc I went "Wow Damn, this looks super awesome"
Looks like pitted cast iron now. Great stuff and thanks for sharing
Excellent, painting rust is something that I have been trying to work out recently!
You can use a normal pencil to highlight the edges. Just varnish afterwards or it will rub off.
This looks awesome!!
I had a rusty necron army once. What I did was I used a rust colored primer from Rustolium as my base coat, and then I kind of drybrushed and splotched on metal around the models, and also some oranges for brighter rust spots, and then slathered nuln oil all over everything. It was quick and dirty and looked good.
Another amazing video sir.
Umm where do we get that Tshirt!
From the Tabletop Minions merch store - just go to the Tabletop Minions website (use a search engine - TH-cam doesn’t like links in comments) and hit ‘merch’ in the menu. Thanks for watching!
I don't know if this has been addressed, but how do we clean dry brushes and makeup brushes? I can clean them normally, but they are out of the picture until they dry. I'd like to use them more than once at a time. Great techniques and video!
I keep multiple brushes around for just that issue - they take some time to dry. Thanks for watching!
Nice effect! Careful tshirt guy, plasma guns overflow.
Ooh... Looks great!
This is much easier then leaving my my metal mini out side for 25 years! 😂 I have misakingly purchased a lot of metalic paint, so this should be easy to find the colors. The hobby store smelled bad and I was asked if I needed help and I just grabbed a box and got out. It was an all metalic paint set.
Was that shrine away from the battlefield for a while, so now he's a little rusty? 😂....... Thanks for the useful technique. Simple and effective
That looks fantastic. Reminds me a lot of using typhus corrosion and ryza rust way back in the day. This looks simpler. I wonder if the dirty down rust could be stippled on this way too.
Dirty Down is thinner, and I don’t know how it would take stippling. Last I looked, it was like $20 per small bottle, too. Thanks for watching!
@@tabletopminions Oh yeah, not going to go buy a bottle to test with but I have this old one just sitting around. For sure going to get the Army Painter rust bundle when it runs out. I keep find I replace my old items with their products as I run out of the others.
That turned out so awesome!
The Anchorite Shrine miniature has some details for painting rust effects.
I'll look forward to seeing your Imperial Knight project in the near grimdark future.
9:30 Amazing! Thank you!
GW is played out, Trench crusade ftw!!!
This was great fuel for the hobby forges
That looks awesome and I'll be using that technique on my current Trench Crusade build.
And I know you have nothing to do with this - I was going to order the rust bundle but the shipping cost was six bucks more than the actual product. Yikes!
just in time for the rainy season
Looks awesome!
🔥🤘 keep up the amazing work brother ❤️👍
Pastels or even crazier enough, those cheap watercolor paint crushed up (yes the ones most of us used as children)
I am wondering do any wargame figure painters ever look at the paints and paint effects used by model and diorama makers. I'm thinking they don't as as up to now I only see paint ranges from gw, army painter and two thin coats ect being used. There's a world of paint ranges and effects already out there. Enjoy the hobby 👍
rad shirt!!!
Really cool. 🖌
I appreciate that “depressmentation” has turned a one syllable word into 5 syllables, but there’s so many prefixes and suffixes… I feel like it can be even more. Paradepressimentazationism? English is a monster, might as well be our monster.
Great video, awesome paint job! Where did you get your Anchorite printed, Atom? Or who do you recommend to print Trench Crusade minis?
I paid my friend Dave to print it. Thanks for watching!
Have you tried Dirty Down products? How do they compare to these you are promoting?
Kind regards and congratulations for the channel. I really enjoy your content, particularly your Friday videos. Congratulations! 👍
I have some of the Dirty Down products. I’ve not had great luck with them - shaking them isn’t enough, you have to actually mix them, like with a toothpick or a wire. They give a more subtle texture compared to these paints, too. And they’re like $20 a bottle last time I bought some. Thanks for watching!
Do you think this worked as well with bronze patina? Rather with teal and a bright turquoise?
It would, you can do a nice verdigris building off of watered down turquoise paint. Add a little green or white as needed.
If you wanted the original metal to be bronze, then you’d probably use verdigris instead of rust. I made a video years ago called “How to Paint a Bronze Statue” that would cover this. However, I wanted this model to look like it was iron or steel instead of bronze. Thanks for watching!
See you next Friday! Or maybe Sunday! 😊
Great video! 👍
How would AP's Death Metal look?🤔
Generally darker, if that’s the look you’re looking for. Thanks for watching!
@@tabletopminions Thanks, I've got a horde of Ork Dreadnoughts that need painting.👍
Trench Crusade seems like what an AI would come up with if you told it to generate the most religious, grimdark setting possible for a TT war game.
Great tutorial, I need to break out my dry brush
Eat the rust paint for amazing results. Seems unorthodox, but I'll try it.
I used ketchup once as a masking material on a actual motorcycle. Lol. We do what we have to.
First!
But also, ty I've been looking for some good advice for my TC stuff. It's just a different kind of grim dark imo
Do that all the time for my Orks. But I start with the metall then rust
What do you 3d print on that looks ao good
My friend Dave printed it on a resin printer - I’m not sure which one. Thanks for watching!
I've had good luck with pastels and chalks.
This looks great. Not taken anything way from it. But all I can say is no one would ever send a warmachine into the battlefield bare metal. Yea, there is stainless steel and the like, but rarely do you make a whole machine out of stainless. When it comes to ships or tanks or anything else like it, you need to coat it. Rust is the devil it will destroy your equipment. I would say, paint the thing, but add patches of rust where there was damage for a slightly more grounded look. Still a nice job.
I’d agree with you generally, but in the world of Trench Crusade where there’s a literal opening to Hell and you’re fighting actual demons… things might be different. 😀 Plus, it looks cool. Thanks for watching!
@@tabletopminions been watching for years. Keep up the good work.
Were you able to print this model on your Bambu? Was thinking of getting a .2 nozzle for this purpose.
I didn’t try - I paid my friend Dave to resin print it for me. Thanks for watching!
Well this will be fantastic for my trench pilgrims as well!
9:05 damn, is that not available yet? I can't find it anywhere online
not yet, but VERY soon, like next week I think
The John Blanche sets should hit stores on February 22. I think you can still pre-order the sets on The Army Painter website, though. Thanks for watching!
@ ah yes, I stand corrected. Thank you Uncle Atom
Hey Uncle Atom, I'm in europe and in dire need of some Trench Crusade proxies. Any tips? (Non UK stuff because we'd have to pay for customs)
Or maybe one of you people could pinch-in in the pinch jar aswell?
Thanks, whoever doesn't respond to this is into elves.
Tip* jar
Link for the rust effects set returns a 404 error on the AP site.
