  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 18 ส.ค. 2024
  • I used rose clay, a gear tie, and a wooden skewer to create this simple rose clay feather swirl soap for Valentine's Day. Thanks for watching! :)
In case you’re interested, I have an affiliate store where I’ve listed all of the soap making supplies and materials that I purchase on Amazon: www.amazon.com/...
If you use those links to buy anything, it won’t cost you anything extra, but I will receive a very small percentage of the sale. Every little bit helps, though, so thank you very much if you do! :)
    ••• SAFETY INFO •••
Remember to always wear safety glasses and gloves when making soap. If you’d like more info on lye safety or basic soapmaking, check out these links:

Lovin’ Soap offers a free ebook on basic soapmaking called Basic Cold Process Soap Making Guide: bit.ly/2PlwB3s
Understanding Water Discounts & Lye Solutions by Modern Soapmaking: bit.ly/2Yvyq2m
    VIDEO TIMELINE:
    00:19 - measuring essential oils & clay
00:55 - preparing the rose clay
01:11 - adding the lye to the oils
01:33 - adding the essential oils & kaolin clay
01:53 - separating and coloring some soap for the swirl
    02:16 - pouring the soap
03:15 - feather swirl using a gear tie
03:40 - creating hearts on top of the soap
04:25 - unmolding and cutting the soap
06:22 - final photos of the cut soap
    RECIPE:
    Olive Oil - 30%
    Coconut Oil - 25%
    Shea Butter - 20%
    Cocoa Butter - 8%
    Avocado Oil - 6%
    Castor Oil - 6%
    Sunflower Oil - High Oleic - 5%
    Superfat - 6%
Lye & Water - use a soap calculator like the one at Majestic Mountain Sage:
    goo.gl/7hH5Vw
    I used a 33% lye solution (water = 2 x lye)
If you don’t want to discount your water, use a 31% lye solution (water = 2.2 x lye)
Kaolin Clay - 2 teaspoons per pound of oil in recipe
Rose Clay for Swirl - mix 3 teaspoons with distilled water (just enough to hydrate the clay). I use 1.5 teaspoons of the hydrated clay per cup of soap.
    Essential Oil Blend:
    Lavender - 2 parts
    Bergamot - 1 part
    Patchouli - 0.5 parts

DISCLAIMER: I make these videos to share my own personal methods and techniques for how I make cold process soap. These videos are not intended as tutorials for beginners. These videos are intended for those who already have an understanding of cold process soap making. Cold process soapmaking has many variables and involves working with sodium hydroxide (NaOH, also referred to as lye). Lye and raw soap can damage your eyes and burn your skin. When making soap, you should already know and practice lye safe handling procedures and always wear safety gear. While I hope you find watching my videos helpful or entertaining, so many variables go into making soap and even the smallest change can greatly affect the results; therefore, I am not liable or responsible for your results if you try any of the methods or techniques that I use in my videos.

Always such beautiful soap! So I tried this yesterday, I thought I was doing great up until it was too late when I realized I forgot to check how my fragrance oil preforms! So with literally 3-4 oz of soap on a spoon, I managed to get out of mold and let’s say the effort was great & all my kids will be mailed a slice! Lol

  • @almondtree2011

Lovely, delicate design. I also use (exclusively) natural colorants and essential oils in my soaps. I imagine you mixed kaolin clay with essential oils to anchor the scent - am I right? Do you find it makes a difference? I haven’t made side by side comparison so I find it hard to tell. Also, I never mixed clay straight into the essential oils, I’ve always added it to soap batter. But I tried your method today and I’m really looking forward to see what happens! Thank you for sharing, Holly. Joanna

    • @hollysoapmaking
      @hollysoapmaking  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Thank you, Jenifer! I add the rosemary oleoresin to the warmed oils. But only a very tiny amount - .08% of the total oils. So for a 1000g recipe, I’d only add .8 g. :)

Hi Holly! Your work is incredible! I was wondering can the cacao butter be substituted with mango butter? Also, is it necessary to anchor the EOs with kaolin clay? Thanks and your craft is awesome!!

    • @hollysoapmaking
      @hollysoapmaking  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Thank you! I’ve never used mango butter, but I have read that you can use it in place of either shea or cocoa butter. The SAP values will probably be different, so the new recipe would need to be run through a lye calculator. Regarding the kaolin, it’s not necessary at all. I’ve heard it helps anchor the scent, but I honestly don’t know. I should probably test that. 😊 I really just like how the soap feels when I include it. Thanks for asking!
