@@BacklogBattle I'm going to go on a Limb and say this is the hardest boss in the entire game if you fight him on hard difficulty. Your way under powered and you don't have access to better healing items yet. I leveled up all my guys to level 20 and Rita's fireball ability, so that it shoots 4 fireballs at a time and it still took me 5 tries. I didn't even bother to revive Karol until the monster had only 15,000 HP left. I saved my life bottles to revive Yuri, Estelle, and Rita. I think their is an even harder difficulty that you can unlock after you beat the game called unknown. I couldn't even imagine beating him on a higher difficulty because the hard difficulty is really hard and used up most of my items. This boas had me cussing a lot.
Another thing that helps is to farm materials for Lemon Gels. It feels kind of cheap to spam higher-tier items this early in the game, but honor died on the hill.
I just started Vesperia today. Going in completely blind. Never even had a character get KOd until Gattuso. Got absolutely stomped for the next hour. Eventually managed to do it with a level 14-16 party by letting Repede go down and having Estelle stay the hell away, then juggling Gattuso's aggro between Rita and Yuri. He didn't stick with a target long enough to do too much damage.
I love rpgs, difficult games, and intricate battle systems. But, as someone new to this series, i almost quit the game over this. On normal. It scared me as to what the game entailed, because this fight is not fun and very cheap.
It’s definitely the definition of a sudden difficulty ramp. I’ve maybe only spoken to one person who said it wasn’t bad, but they’ve been playing games in the series since the PS1!
Even though i have played this game for years i still dread this boss everytime. He just does so much damage for when you fight him.(specially if you are like me and do bosses on hard of if on ng+ unknown.) I feel the 2 biggest issues with this fight is it really shows how bad the Ai can be cause Gattuso likes to run around and maul everyone (specially casters) you are also limited in your offence unless you are on ng+ with alot of carry over. My method of choice is to just quickly kill the adds then put the ai on defend and solo the boss with yuri well having estelles heals and some spells from rita set to shortcuts.
@@shirox11 Yes because like you said the ai will become hit or miss, one of the main gripes of this game, and everyone will end up alseep and dead quick. I am however really glad I didn't quit, this game gave me a huge appreciation for these tri-ace style rpgs. I ended up beating this game three times. And, currently, I'm going through an English translation of Star Ocean for the SNES and it's probably one of my favorite games I've ever played. (Another Tri Ace/Enix venture)

Enix, of Square Enix, and Tri Ace, make way better games *now a days* then the Square titles imo. Scathing take I know, there's definitely been some misses in the Tri Ace side. And of course Atlus (Sega) are now the turnbased kings now. By the way, wanna play a badass new turnbased game? Yakuza, Like A Dragon. Best jrpg I've played since the last DQ. If you want older games: -Tales of Symphonia, -Tales of Abyss, -Star Ocean 1 and 2, -All Persona games, (except P1, anything SMT, really.) -Shining Resonance, (finally got a modern hd release, it was a Sega rpg for PS2) -Resonance of Fate (Sega again) -And I'll give Square credit... Cause old Square"soft," were the best to ever do it. Trials of Mana for Switch. Or the o.g. Seiken Densetsu 3. The original 16 bit game never got an English release till recently, but it's widely regarded as one of the best games ever made. It's Chrono Trigger good. -Also play DQ 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, (7 if you're a hardcore gamer. It's the longest rpg of all time.) Happy grinding! :)
The only thing I'd add is that you don't need to hit the flower. Gattuso can hit it for you. Just bait a charge from it and it'll run into the flower, stunning it and letting you easily avoid getting stunned. You can more easily get behind to break its shield. Granted, I played this boss on Hard on the initial playthrough, so the strategy may not be necessary at lower difficulties
Also I think it would have been wise to tell people to make sure the equipment it up to date as well. Since that has always been my problem in games like this.
I always just made sure to map Rita's fireball to a right stick movement so I can just have her on full spam mode. Usually does the trick, but I like the idea of limiting Estelle's arts to healing. The funny thing is that after you beat him, in the cutscene, the party is like: "Wow he was weak"
I'm a Tales veteran and honestly thought that this was a unwinnable fight, but I managed to beat him in my first try! I'm finding the boss fights in this game very cheap in the way that bosses do TOO MUCH DAMAGE! If I had to compare with other Tales I would put a normal boss fight equal to a tainted monster in Zestiria.
Thanks for the tips, finally managed to beat him, stocked up on items, grinded to lvl 17, full charge strategy). It was a hassle and I might have quit without your guide but it actually made me understand that there is a minimum of strategy involved in some fights, gonna tackle future adversaries in a similar way :)
Stuck on Gattuso in Hard Mode. I find this video, anyway, the most useful and precise in this battle. Once I'm alone with the main antagonist, it gets easier and I feel like that, with Yuri and Rita at level 17, this is doable.
Just beat this boss now. Had to lower the difficulty to normal. In hard difficulty, he superarmors everything and specifically targets Yuri if you attempt to kill off one of the wolf cubs. He can also one-shot a 50% health Yuri easily. I set Rita to use overlimit herself since her fireballs seem to do the most damage.
I was lvl 14 when fighting him and didnt expect such a difficult boss. He almost made me ragequit but i somehow managed to beat him in the first go after using up literally all items i had. As for the tips, freerunning is definitely the way to go. At least i completed the secret mission. Now i need a break.
Zagi > 1 try Egg bear > 1 try Goliath > 3 tries Gattuso > 5 tires and counting. Not feeling confident at all. Also why is he lvl 26 with 26 k hp and not lvl 20 with 20k hp as everyone claims ?
I lost to this guy like 10 times and then somehow steamrolled him. Im not complaining, just confused. Your advice on turning off the arts was useful. I didnt know you could do that so thank you.

I nearly quit bc I’ve never lost so many times in a game and this was my first time playing tales of vesperia so I thought its just bc I suck at it. I probably do but I’m glad there are others who struggled at this too lol! Thanks for the tips!
Didn't take me long to beat him after watching this video and leveling my crew to 18. It wasn't easy, lots of running around for me, lots of potion use, but way smoother than trying to fight gattuso on level 16. Thanks a bunch 👍
Managed to beat it with a Lv 17 team on Hard the other day. I just refuse to play in a lower difficulty and boy, that took a while. Rita with Overlimit played a big part for sure.
For anyone playing on the Definitive Edition and used the item packs, but don't want to just use the free level up items to blitz the game, there's a couple All-Divides that help a lot. He loses a lot more damage than you do.
That Boss is Level 20?! No wonder I had a hard ass time defeating him at Level 14 ... >_< He's for sure a roadblock and an insane difficulty spike, makes me wonder why they chose to do that? :|

I’d chalk him up as some weird design choice in the previous gen. I know that long time Tales fans don’t find him that tough, but casual fans and newcomers all find this boss extremely challenging. I too attacked every single enemy leading to the boss and still couldn’t understand why I was underleveled for him!
As a newcomer to the series myself I finished the boss and went straight to the web to check if I am the only one with problems and even looked for other lps and guides talking about that beast and if the difficulty raises even more after that. And if I heard you correctly the next bosses will be easier - I look forward to that. :D
im not sure, since i started playing this game yesterday, but i think one recipe you obtain in the erea where rita is from boosts the attack of the whole group so you might wanna cook it right before you trigger the cutscene
Thanks for this. I did not know we can adjust the difficulty and did not know we could switch off Artes for characters. Did that and smashed it first go
Holy shit. I beat Gattuso first try on Hard with the secret mission too at level 17. He is very susceptible to manual cancel and kiting him in circles while the rest of the party wails on him. Make sure you bring TP restoring gels to keep the rest of the party useful.
Another thing you could try out is changing your strats to all out right before the fight! I had keep reserve (stop artes at 25% tp) set so my dps was being gimped, cooking the Atk up recipe is also useful
I finished him at level 15 and normal difficulty after 3 tries. Weirdly, the Zigo fight at the beginning of the game gave me much harder time, and I had to fight him like 10 times before even geting to the second stage of the fight. I thought I was missing something about the combat system but I don´ t know
So I got the definitive edition on the switch and I got up to this part..I was level 15 and I kept trying to beat this boss and I just couldn’t so I grinded out to level 18..tell me why I got so tired of dying I was just scrolling thru the character menus to realize I had booster that boost my characters 5 levels up..I was so shocked..I used it and that’s how I got to beat him..got my characters boosted to lvl 23-24
@@BacklogBattle I’d say they’re better for the endgame so you can gain a sudden mass of levels when you’re starting to notice that levels are taking a bit of time to gain. Early on they make the early game easier but aren’t as useful during the endgame.

Gattuso is a pretty chill dude after you get used to his antics, all you gotta do is do OVL 1 and spam your 9999 Final Gale/Meteor/etc with ur fell arm at 9999. The funny thing is I can't really explain the challenge though, because when I was trying it Rita with auto literally did it for me with 1 damage so it must be simple.
This one is somewhat difficult but for somw insight, there is a lot of complexity to the battle system. My hest way to beat him is by breaking the battle into acts act 1 you want every party member to avoid the boss and take out the underlings to do this go to strategy and adjust the AI so its. Avoid risk this makes the AI run away from eminies which is imparitve to have on estelle I also. Have estelle use little TP in this formation. But you can line up your fomration so every one is atracking different wolves and doing damage once all the wolves are defeated you can go to another command or what I call act to and get the secret mission I make sure that estelle is healing people as often as possilbe, and that rita is using fire attacks
I did notice a difficulty spike for sure, though I beat the fight on my first attempt. Didn't realize this fight was such a big issue. I'm mostly just looking to see how I csn improve my gameplay based on how others play. I always feel like I should be able to beat battles without taking damage if I'm good enough, though.
There's no shame in putting it on Easy! Everyone's had a rough time with this guy, and frankly, outside of Tales vets, this was an insane fight to put in so early!
Levelling up to 17 made the fight like night and day. I swear he was killing me instantly at level 16, when I hit 17 I could at least survive long enough to get some heals off.

Didn’t know you could go back. I just started this game in hard mode and got to to this boss at level 15. Took like 30 tries to beat him. All previous fights were so easy that I didn’t bother stock up gels so I couldn’t go level up because I needed the few gels to beat him. It was bearable with other fights, but this fight really show how stupid and clunky the control of this game is.

Here I had no idea he was at such a high level, while I was trying to figure out how to manually cast magic since Estelle seemed to heal more randomly and I was going to try and sit in a corner as her to take it over (dis noob cant figure the artes out somehow hahaaaa) Now I know to grind and assign specific abilities when the time comes. I only just got the game. I was really bloody enjoying it until this little encounter. I beat it at level 15 but it burned through all of my resources. (this was on normal btw). The thing that PISSED ME OFF was the way the characters said in the following cutscene that the thing was an easy push over that put up no fight. BITCH EXCUSE ME? I didn't realise I was under leveled. Is this likely to happen again in the playthrough? I want to know because if yes I'm putting this shit on easy mode.
Well thank christ, because otherwise I've been loving the game. Tbh it was largely on me for not noticing that I was 6 levels down from it, although that usually isn't a major issue.
This boss on hard is just some next level bullshit. It has literally almost three times as much health. I could never beat it at level 17. This boss should have been fixed on the the definitive edition.
I don't care what anyone says, that boss is bullshit. I had to lower the difficulty from normal just to stand a slight chance. I beat it on easy, but only after using almost every apple gel and life bottle I had.
I enjoyed Alexei but his Mystic Arte is something you need to watch out for. But while I don’t normally have to worry about not doing enough damage he has a strong healing skill.
If you're struggling with this do yourself a favor and put some music on and grind up to level 18+ I just beat him first try on hard and did the secret mission at level 18 when I couldn't when I was level 15-16
Lol I did the same on Estelle and Rita, but I was too underleved and I'd put the game on easy mode to have a chance.. I should have keep trying instead of doing that >

So I know how to beat it, the boss still kicks my ass. Just bought the game yesterday-ish and this game is making me seriously regret it. Hate this boss. Maybe I need to equip posion wards. That might help but I feel like the boss will just wipe my party out anyway. Ugh

I have a friend who's a long time Tales fan who said that this boss wasn't a problem for him, so don't think you're alone in this! But yea, even in the game's original release, this boss has always been a problem!
When I asked if this game was grindy...they said no, but if you want to stand a chance against an early boss you'll have to grind up a few levels. Well at least the combat is fun and I needed the practice with it. Coming off a playthrough of FFXV
The first time I went against him I got crushed. I definitely wasn't expecting a boss in that field location, but I should've known because of the nearby save point. The 2nd time, I was more prepared. I beat him but it was my first time using items mid-battle. I really wish I would've known that the beast had weakness against fire. I neglected to used my fire attribute artes attack.
My impulse to grind so much helped me beat this boss in one try haha and a second just for the secret mission. Already got lvl 20 by the time I got to this boss.
I don't know what rock you're living under, but the most recent Tales game just happens to be the fastest selling game in the series and continues to sell a lot years after its launch.
So on normal the games waaaaaay too easy, so you crank It up. Then you run into this boss. Difficulty balance is FUBAR in what would be an amazing game.
I was first trying everything on normal difficulty until this boss. I hate when games put these random difficulty spikes early on but make the rest of the main game simple.
At least I know I’m not the only one having problems with this boss!

Holy shit. I beat Gattuso first try on Hard with the secret mission too at level 17. He is very susceptible to manual cancel and kiting him in circles while the rest of the party wails on him. Make sure you bring TP restoring gels to keep the rest of the party useful.
Another thing you could try out is changing your strats to all out right before the fight! I had keep reserve (stop artes at 25% tp) set so my dps was being gimped, cooking the Atk up recipe is also useful

I finished him at level 15 and normal difficulty after 3 tries. Weirdly, the Zigo fight at the beginning of the game gave me much harder time, and I had to fight him like 10 times before even geting to the second stage of the fight. I thought I was missing something about the combat system but I don´ t know

So I got the definitive edition on the switch and I got up to this part..I was level 15 and I kept trying to beat this boss and I just couldn’t so I grinded out to level 18..tell me why I got so tired of dying I was just scrolling thru the character menus to realize I had booster that boost my characters 5 levels up..I was so shocked..I used it and that’s how I got to beat him..got my characters boosted to lvl 23-24

@@BacklogBattle I’d say they’re better for the endgame so you can gain a sudden mass of levels when you’re starting to notice that levels are taking a bit of time to gain. Early on they make the early game easier but aren’t as useful during the endgame.

Gattuso is a pretty chill dude after you get used to his antics, all you gotta do is do OVL 1 and spam your 9999 Final Gale/Meteor/etc with ur fell arm at 9999. The funny thing is I can't really explain the challenge though, because when I was trying it Rita with auto literally did it for me with 1 damage so it must be simple.

This one is somewhat difficult but for somw insight, there is a lot of complexity to the battle system. My hest way to beat him is by breaking the battle into acts act 1 you want every party member to avoid the boss and take out the underlings to do this go to strategy and adjust the AI so its. Avoid risk this makes the AI run away from eminies which is imparitve to have on estelle I also. Have estelle use little TP in this formation. But you can line up your fomration so every one is atracking different wolves and doing damage once all the wolves are defeated you can go to another command or what I call act to and get the secret mission I make sure that estelle is healing people as often as possilbe, and that rita is using fire attacks
i died the first time grinded a little bit came back and bodied him he wasn't that tough for me luckily, i didnt know all if this tho

I did notice a difficulty spike for sure, though I beat the fight on my first attempt. Didn't realize this fight was such a big issue. I'm mostly just looking to see how I csn improve my gameplay based on how others play. I always feel like I should be able to beat battles without taking damage if I'm good enough, though.
I just couldn’t beat him and all my party were level 16. I had to admit defeat and lower difficulty to Easy to get past him.
There's no shame in putting it on Easy! Everyone's had a rough time with this guy, and frankly, outside of Tales vets, this was an insane fight to put in so early!
Levelling up to 17 made the fight like night and day. I swear he was killing me instantly at level 16, when I hit 17 I could at least survive long enough to get some heals off.

Didn’t know you could go back. I just started this game in hard mode and got to to this boss at level 15. Took like 30 tries to beat him. All previous fights were so easy that I didn’t bother stock up gels so I couldn’t go level up because I needed the few gels to beat him.
It was bearable with other fights, but this fight really show how stupid and clunky the control of this game is.
I didn't know that I could go back either! The way they designed the environments was tricky!

Here I had no idea he was at such a high level, while I was trying to figure out how to manually cast magic since Estelle seemed to heal more randomly and I was going to try and sit in a corner as her to take it over (dis noob cant figure the artes out somehow hahaaaa) Now I know to grind and assign specific abilities when the time comes. Not sure I'd have known the level spike. Thank you
I only just got the game. I was really bloody enjoying it until this little encounter. I beat it at level 15 but it burned through all of my resources. (this was on normal btw). The thing that PISSED ME OFF was the way the characters said in the following cutscene that the thing was an easy push over that put up no fight. BITCH EXCUSE ME? I didn't realise I was under leveled. Is this likely to happen again in the playthrough? I want to know because if yes I'm putting this shit on easy mode.
I felt the exact same way LOL. As far as the rest of the game, I didn’t find the same problem elsewhere. This truly was a unique case
Well thank christ, because otherwise I've been loving the game. Tbh it was largely on me for not noticing that I was 6 levels down from it, although that usually isn't a major issue.
Ironically I ran from the save point all the back to Halure to buy a bunch of gels and fought monsters on the way there and somehow got to lvl 17

This boss on hard is just some next level bullshit. It has literally almost three times as much health. I could never beat it at level 17. This boss should have been fixed on the the definitive edition.
I don't care what anyone says, that boss is bullshit. I had to lower the difficulty from normal just to stand a slight chance. I beat it on easy, but only after using almost every apple gel and life bottle I had.

I think he’s the worst boss of the game…but to be honest, he gave me a pretty decent reward. And he is weak to fire, I’ll give him that.
I enjoyed Alexei but his Mystic Arte is something you need to watch out for. But while I don’t normally have to worry about not doing enough damage he has a strong healing skill.

If you're struggling with this do yourself a favor and put some music on and grind up to level 18+ I just beat him first try on hard and did the secret mission at level 18 when I couldn't when I was level 15-16

I have a friend who's a long time Tales fan who said that this boss wasn't a problem for him, so don't think you're alone in this! But yea, even in the game's original release, this boss has always been a problem!

When I asked if this game was grindy...they said no, but if you want to stand a chance against an early boss you'll have to grind up a few levels. Well at least the combat is fun and I needed the practice with it. Coming off a playthrough of FFXV
The first time I went against him I got crushed. I definitely wasn't expecting a boss in that field location, but I should've known because of the nearby save point. The 2nd time, I was more prepared. I beat him but it was my first time using items mid-battle. I really wish I would've known that the beast had weakness against fire. I neglected to used my fire attribute artes attack.
I seldom use elemental weaknesses in this game. This is the one situation that it’s a must.
I've yet to complete the game but that one beast in the lower level of the forest was the most difficult boss

The most absurd boss I’ve ever fought in a game. What a failure on part of the dev team, it’s not surprising this series failed.
I don't know what rock you're living under, but the most recent Tales game just happens to be the fastest selling game in the series and continues to sell a lot years after its launch.

So on normal the games waaaaaay too easy, so you crank It up. Then you run into this boss. Difficulty balance is FUBAR in what would be an amazing game.
I was first trying everything on normal difficulty until this boss. I hate when games put these random difficulty spikes early on but make the rest of the main game simple.
