Earliest appearance of Raven was in the Yellow Trailer. She can be seen flying around outside before Yang enters the night club to, ironically, interrogate Junior about Raven's location lmao!

Did we ever get official confirmation on that? I always thought it was ambiguous whether it was Raven or Qrow watching out for her.

@@stephenford5661 The irl differences between the two are rather minor, so I would not assume most shows have the interest and skill to actually show which is which correctly, forget assuming I have the skill to correctly read what they show.
23:54 that is Ruby's character in a nutshell, "I gotta suppress and bottle up these negative emotions so that everyone around me can feel better and just more hopeful."
As an additional note, the writing very heavily implies that the last time Yang ever talked to Ruby was when Ruby said 'I love you' at the end of Volume 3 and Yang refused to say it back. From Ruby's rant right there, "I should've stayed, and I should've talked to you more! I'd-- I just... I wasn't sure if you wanted me around and--." Ruby would have been walking on eggshells around Yang for at least a month or two based on the changing seasons.
So when she left, she went months more with her sister's condition on the back of her mind, effectively wondering if their relationship would ever recover. So it is such a good touch on the writer's part where Yang's first line on their reunion is to finally tell Ruby that she does still love her, alleviating all the regret and uncertainty Ruby had been feeling about the way she left their relationship.
I understand why you see it that way but we do know that there was at least some amount of conversation in the couple of months because during Ruby's letter at the end of Volume 4 she talks about how "I know you said it wasn't a good idea" when referring to her decision to leave for Haven. Ruby definitely told Yang where she was going. We don't know what that conversation looked like, of course. But still know that at least some kind of conversation happened.
Plus its kind of just hard to believe that Ruby and Yang didn't talk for months considering the kind of characters they are. It's definitely feasible from Yang's side because of her state at the end of Volume 3 but I just can't see it with Ruby honestly. She would have at *least* tried to talk to her. I imagine they we're very sisterly though. Yang was probably very cold in any of their talks (kind of like the one we do get to see at the end of volume 3).
The implication for me personally is that Yang hasn't said it at all since though. And that she finally had the personal emotional strength to say it back now.
"I know people who can come back from the dead" is a line very carefully phrased. Raven's talking about Oz.
The plural would imply that Salem's ability to be killed and come back is included as well.
@@grantharriman284 It could imply anything. Pyrrha is an interesting thought for sure by them. Guess we'll have to find out in the future what Raven really meant by it all though since Yang (and Weiss) chose to leave rather than stay.
@@undeathghost5627 I would be just as happy to leave her entirely out of the story and never get that answer, personally. She's a terrible person and an even worse mother figure. She did Yang a favor when she left Summer and Tai to raise her.
Or Pyrrha, interesting thought, or any of the other characters we've seen die so far. So many possibilities, and of course we're all watching this together with the reactors and not theorizing too far ahead so as not to spoil their enjoyment.

Fun Facts
Fact 1: The episode's title comes from the phrase "A bird is known by its song, a man by his words". It means that, just like a person can recognize a bird by its call, a person can also recognize a man by the way he speaks. For example, a liar speaks lies.
Fact 2: One name from the mission boards of Huntsman and Huntresses is Caroline Teale. The name makes reference to Agent Carolina, from another popular Rooster Teeth webseries, Red vs. Blue. Teal is a kind of blue-green color, similar to cyan, the color of her armor.
Fact 3: Raven said that Professor Ozpin had a "great and terrible" secret, which references Oz being known as the "great and terrible" in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
back at the end of volume 3 ruby walks into yang's room while yang is dealing with what just happened at beacon and ruby leave saying "I love you" but yang never said it back. When they met up again I think she wanted to make sure she made up for it.

Raven and Qrow are so opposite from each other. Even their Semblances are opposite. Qrow: Wants to be with the people he cares about but can't because of his powers. Raven: always running away and yet she can create portals to the people who she bonded with.

I absolutely love the reveals in this episode. Looking back, it should have been clear that the raven thing Qrow would do was very different from any semblance, but the outrageous stuff we've seen obscured it quite nicely. Very well played, I love it when a show can be clever like this.
Also, the sequence of Qrow looking for his friends, and finding them all missing, presumed dead is one of the saddest moments in the entire show. All of his friends, gone, and he never knew.
It also flies under the radar that we the viewers saw Qrow transform as he ran up to the fight with Tyrion, but none of the other characters witness that transformation. It's intentionally kept out of their knowledge and left ambiguous whether the bird is just a visual metaphor or literally how he arrived. When it suddenly all gets confirmed as literal the implications are big.
It's also well concealed by Qrow at first because for a long time the assumption is simply that it is his Semblance. The perceptive viewers of course realize something weird is going on when Qrow says his semblance is bad luck in volume 4... Thus when theory crafting starts and some think it could just be metaphorical. At least until this episode.
That's also an indication that SOMETHING is probably taking out every single hunstman in the city, which might imply corruption from the top, which we the audience are aware of. These guys were probably set up on suicide missions.
I always found the way Raven presented their bird transformation to be kinda strange. Like, "Look what Ozpin cursed us with!". Can you perfectly control it? Yes. Does it ever happen randomly without your control? No. Has it ever caused you any problems whatsoever, outside of the mission he asked you to undertake alongside it? No. You've ditched the mission, so what's the downside?
I personally believe that the transformation is extremely painful. Raven and Qrow are so used to it that they can ignore the pain a bit, and adrenaline (like when Qrow was trying to get to Ruby when Tyrian was attacking her last volume) can also lessen the pain by a tiny amount, but I think it still hurts A LOT
@@marieporter9488 That's a really good theory, actually, thank you! I'd still argue that, in that case, she can just... not use it, given she apparently has complete control over when it happens. Makes it a lot more understandable, though, why she's so pissed about it.

This chapter hit so many feelings, you couldn't take it without feeling something by the end of it!! Qrow's fruitless hunt for allies, Raven's idea of the truth of life, and the reunion of Yang & Ruby...... I remember how it wore my soul out the first time. 😅
And this Volume isn't half over yet.....
Now, they all will have to catching up to do. And some tales to tell, especially about Oscar!!!

Quite a performance from Raven. She gave out very little information we didn't know already, while carefully planting seeds of doubt and suspicion in the girls. Being able to turn into a bird is a power most people would love and give a great deal for, but she describes it as a bad thing. And she doesn't answer most of Yang's questions at all, not even the "why did you leave" one. Or maybe especially not that one.
Raven seems to be calculating that Salem probably won't destroy the entire world in her lifetime, and so the smart thing to do is to stay away from her. And yeah, that's cowardly....but it's what most of us do with our lives, if we're being honest. People willing to step in and be heroes like RWBYJNROQ are rare. I don't dislike Raven for deciding she doesn't want to save the world. I dislike her contempt for the people who do want to try.
16:37 The last interaction we got between the sisters was Ruby saying "i love you" and Yang didn't respond. I'm pretty sure that moment, and versions of this one she created now, have been looping in Yang's head for a very long time. Now that she's OK enough to say it back nothing could stop her.

13:08 You've seen that bird before, too. The beginning of the Yellow Trailer, the altercation with Winter and Qrow in Beacon, outside of Yang's window at the end of Volume 3, and a few other times I might have missed.
Qrow is one solid buddy. Debts are paid. (And his fight with Winter before the fall of Beacon. There was a Raven seen just before the duel.)
Thanks! People always seems to misinterpretate that scene, debts clear, imagine what the bartender was thinking "why would this guy come here and clear that idiot's deb... Oh... Oh no, he is probably dead, i was mad but now i feel sad for the idiot" something like that i think, its a very sad scene, we dont know that hunter, but we can tell that he was maybe silly or irresponsable, but a good pal, so much that Qrow and the bartender laments his loss.

Back towards the end of volume 4 Tai told Yang she reminded him of Raven: her strength, ambition, and dedication to whatever cause she felt was worth fighting for. The Raven Yang meets falls well short of that description. Either Tai has let nostalgia cloud his memory, or what Raven experienced while participating in Ozpin and Salem's shadow war broke her fighting spirit and caused her to retreat to a time in her life when she felt things were still in her control.

Actually Raven was there all along because there are scenes where you can see a raven and that raven is actually Raven and like Yang said she has seen her mother in raven form before
In this episode, I love everything that's not said. Qrow searching for huntsmen, and looking at the mission boards. The bar payment scene. Raven hinting and teasing endlessly. But for what is said, "I love you" from Yang is perfect. When we saw Ruby last speak to Yang, she said she loves her, and Yang didn't respond. And now we get it. :)
As for Raven, the value she offers is that she's an incredible fighter, a leader, and a killer too. Qrow mentioned her strength when she met him in the inn in season 4. And Lionheart said that only Qrow would be an even match for Raven, and that he couldn't take her (although no surprise there). Neo ran from her. This is someone you can trust to fight. You just can't trust what or who they'll fight for.

Fun fact: Crows and Ravens are essentially the same exact species, one is just a subspecies of the other. There’s almost no difference which is great since Qrow and Raven are twins.
Also I love how Ruby reacted when she saw Yang, however when she said “I should have stayed…” she was coping in that moment for abandoning her sister in her mind. It’s actually good she left when they did because that way the village they helped on the way wouldn’t have been terrorized or worse by that Geist Grimm that used the Trees and Boulders as body parts.❤
That makes us feel better because we always confuse a Raven and a crow 😂🤗
I know people give Vol 4&5 a hard time saying these volumes are the weakest but the story telling and the set ups in these volumes are so good
Tbh if these two volumes then volume 6 and learning t”he truth” would not have hit as hard as they do neither would 7 and 8. These volume truly solidified ruby as the leader of the entire group and the pressures she felt throughout. I think of volumes 4-6 as a soda. 4 and 5 are the soda being shaken and volume 6 “the fable” is when the soda was opened and everything after is the explosion. Yang meeting raven was the starting point of a wedge being built between the group and ozpin and the fable is that wedge, which was hidden, being removed and put under a spotlight. 4-5 aren’t action oriented in the way the other volumes were and people didn’t like that. Truly ruby has much more exceptional story telling then people care for because they showed up expecting the action to carry the show. Also thank you for reading my reply I know it’s long lol
The thing about Oz, is he is old, like really, really old. And he is "fighting" (if you can call it that) Salem for a long, long time. Without any doubt, he had numeros followers, especially huntsmen and huntresses, but where are all of them now? Most likely died in line of duty.
So yeah, i can totally understand Raven's desire to stay away from him and his "war" (she is a terrible person still).
- Hell hath no fury like a tavern keep you owe a hefty tab to. Still, his reaction when Qrow paid that tab and said "His name is clear"...
- You nailed it - Raven is still withholding a lot of secrets herself. She could've told more to earn Yang's trust, but instead she just hid it behind an ultimatum.
- Yang finally returns the "I love you" that Ruby gave so many months ago...! Awww, and Weiss realizes how much further her own family reaches~

The thing about Ruby standing awkward is Ruby knows that she abandoned Yang and she's aware of Yang's abandonment issues so she felt guilty about adding to Yang's issues. But Yang didn't hold it against Ruby and had forgiven her a long time ago knowing that Ruby didn't intend to abandon her out of malicious or selfish intent. Plus it's another theme that Monty's story plays with which is the themes of forgiveness and moving forward.
For Raven, both her and Qrow are modeled after Odin's Ravens named Munin (Qrow) and Hugin (Raven). In that mythology, both birds were Odin's spies in which Raven and Qrow have similar roles. There's theories that Raven and Qrow are keeping more secrets that Ozpin has and are continuing to play the spy roles because of Salem's ability to be the eyes and ears of Remnant and know all of Ozpins comrades. And since this story is a slow burn, we probably won't find out until at least V10.
Oh and Weiss. It's amazing because she goes between the forefront of character plot and arcs and the background so quickly and so frequently. She slingshots in and out of the spotlight, however I think from this season onwards she plays both roles really well. Love her partnering with Yang, fire and ice incarnate! But both very mature and level-headed people.
I'm sure you'll get a ton of information about the episode or the fact that a raven can be seen alongside Yang for a while like in her very first trailer. But I'll focus on Weiss.
Already in relation to the fact that she does not believe everything that Raven told her but thinks that there is an element of truth, we must remember that for a long time she only believed what her father told her, before to realize that it was false, but also that she had preconceived ideas about the Faunus, before hearing Blake. She went through the process of questioning the truth and preferring to hear what everyone has to say before forming her own opinion.
But my favorite part is when she's on the bike with Yang and Raven gives her "maybe I won't be so nice next time" speech. We see Weiss roll her eyes, because she perfectly recognizes Raven's attempt, since her father must have probably made this kind of speech more than once.
I really like the Yang/Ruby scene in that it is a direct callback to the Volume 3 finale when Ruby told Yang that she loved her and Yang didn't answer back. Since Yang is the first one to say it here, that makes it a reply to the last thing Ruby said to her on-screen and it was really satisfying when we first watched this scene as we had been waiting almost two years for that reply.
The little girl (Heather's daughter) is about the age Ruby would've been when Summer Rose left and never returned.
I can imagine youll make a drink soon called Qrow's Night Out and its just cask of all the liquor top to bottom shelf in one bag because thats Qrows sadness. Man is legit Dante if Dante never had pizza and ice cream to fill the depression void.
I always liked the small musical reprises we get these volumes, the piano version of 'Gold' that plays when Yang and Ruby reunite is such a nice touch.

Qrow's semblance is bad luck. He has known different ways to deal with a bad hand his whole life. He's familiar with it so he still feels it but knows something is up.
Ozpins is based on both the wizard of Oz and loosely odin so turning raven and qrow into black birds was fitting due to odin had 2 ravens Huginn and Muninn

Dang, Ken! You sure got a read on Raven. I think I didn't realize that about her until my third or fourth viewing.
After i watched this chapter for the first time i went back and re watched the whole series and omg crow and raven are everywhere, as back as the trailers , and kind of made me even more angry at raven, like she saw, knew and CHOSE to don't be with her blood family but her chosen one, the gang of thieves , whatever, whats important is that team RWBY is just missing one letter
Raven knew about Yang's arm because she was the black bird outside Yang's bedroom window at the end of Volume 3.
Yang's "I love you" is her finally answering Ruby's "I love you" from Volume 3 as she left Yang's bedroom.
They left on uneasy terms, and Ruby had surprised her Dad & Yang by ghosting them and leaving just a note....Ruby was unsure how Yang was feeling and almost expecting a scolding....she needed that reassurance from her big sister that she still loves her, etc. Weiss is happy for them but clearly missing Winter...so Ruby & Yang offer their group hug for Weiss. Yay for found family.
Is it just me or does The bartender in the beginning of this episode sound like DBZA Piccolo. Probably the same voice actor but I'm too lazy to look 😅

So Much good stuff in this episode! The Build up is great, and we’re slowing seeing the plot threads starting to form for this season as each of the characters are starting to learn more about their world.
But what Got me this episode was definitely Qrow’s search, which started out funny but got dark real quick when you start to realize that everyone he wants to recruit is gone, disappeared…. And there’s only a few thoughts that form as to who is responsible.
Raven has the best semblance in all the entire show. create a portal
Mistral and Atlas are neighbours, and they were allies in the war. It's no surprise that racism has spread back and forth between them. It's team STRQ... Summer was the leader.

Great reaction, looking forwards to your next one! Raven is an interesting character, in a lot of ways, and I hope we see more of her in the future. Poor Qrow though....
once you discover Ozpin's background i would suggest having another listen to the lyrics in the music from seasons 1 and 2,.. but don't expect to figure out his background just yet, that is going to wait until season 5

More TFS Lani Fact: He voices the Bartender Qrow went to look for Shiro. When I watched this when it came out, I thought Chris Sabat was the Voice of the guy and boy am I glad I was wrong.
Lani also did the voice of one of the rich guests from the charity event in Volume 4 where Weiss sings, I believe

I have a rule with most people. Not cemented, but general observation. Those who have a good sense of humor and also get hit in the feels (visually and audibly react) when emotional scenes happen in shows and videos, tend to be the best kind of people.
The amount of reactors who are just "shut down" going through the motions or exaggerated to the point it's clearly a persona meant for the camera makes me instantly not be able to enjoy it.
You two have seemed genuine since the first video I'd seen of yours. I wouldn't be here otherwise.

I've seen a lot of people react to this show, and a *lot* of people get very annoyed with this episode, as soon as Raven starts telling Yang and Weiss about "the truth." I think a lot of people go in expecting that she's gona drop some massive world altering exposition, and she does, but not for the audience. The world changing exposition is for Yang and Weiss, who, remember, have been completely out of the loop on damn near everything until now. They don't know about magical maiden powers, they don't know about Salem, they don't know about Ozpins reincarnation ability, nothing.
And Raven is using that. She's using it to try and paint her own "truth," with which to get Yang on her side. She paints Oz as the villain, she paints Qrow and Tai as fools for following him, she paints Salem as an unstoppable force and Oz's war against her as a pointless waste, and she paints herself as the one who was clever enough to break away, to see "the truth" and get the hell out of there. She's the savvy survivor, who wasn't duped into a pointless war (a war that has been going on for who knows how long and still hasn't resulted in any side clearly coming out ahead). She's the hero of her own little story. As I said on an earlier episode, Raven is... complicated. And the worst part is, she kinda has a point. Still a terrible mother/person, but she's not wrong about some things.
Course, we did learn more about what's up with those bird powers we've seen from Qrow. You guys never mentioned it, but did you never find it odd how Qrow has both a semblance AND a shapeshifting ability? Nobody else had that, until now. And on that note, if you go back through the series, you can see Raven turn up A LOT in bird form. She was never really that far away.
Also, fyi, the "I know people who can come back from the dead" line was just referring to Oz. In case you were getting your hopes up.

Raven is definitely imo a very interesting character and i know alot hate her but me personally i don't hate her, i dislike heavly that she abandoned everyone, her husband/lover, her daughter and even her brother ofc but i really do like her character it's hard to explain.
But other than that poor qrow not finding anyone 😢 poor man never catches a break and it was nice of him to pay of his old friends tab.
The reunion in this one ofc as always is another good one that i love, poor weiss didnt know what to do when ruby and yang were hugging, but luckily her family was there to let her know she was home and welcomed her with arms wide open literally lol. 3/4 members of the rwby fam are back together we just need the kitty cat 🐈⬛🖤. The family needs to be whole again! ❤🤍 🖤 💛.
Also random but i dont know how many people noticed this when watching but when yang gets mad at what raven says around 11:07-11:09 something around there weiss flinches i thought that was a cool yet very sad detail that i also noticed in the episode where jaque points at her when he was trying to punish her after the party she also flinches, just man the little details we miss sometimes or i miss sometimes anyways it could be obvious lol.

raven isnt making her own group, its where qrow and her were born and grew up and she doesnt want to leave that. think of it this way why dont the people of the smaller towns that live outside of the big kingdoms not move to the safety of the big citys? maybe cause it is where they are from and thats what they know. they understand theres danger out there but this is their life. yea raven has more info but she is just like those people in those small towns. "this is my home and im staying here".
I have a feeling they were abused as a child and maybe this is some kind of Stockholm syndrome in a way (or was in the past)
@@sqxbarto9229 raven even says it in this episode they are part of that "clan". she even says she there cause she wants to protect her clan (cant remember what episode she says that in but i think its more than once. once when her and qrow are talking at the bar and if i remember right she says it in a heated moment. i find it so funny how many people miss details like this but then argue they are right on other stuff (not you here). its like if you cant remember this how can i trust you on other things?
I mean, “question everything” is good advice, regardless of its source. The kids have just kind of listening to whatever the adults tell them. Qrow himself doesn’t question Oz. There’s loyalty, and then there’s just blind faith.
Man. Raven, why are you like this (affectionate)? It’s so interesting because Raven clearly wants Yang to stay, to not get wrapped up in what she sees as a losing battle. But she’s also still very much in this mindset that’s just proven to push her family away. Worst Mom is just so fascinating to me.

This episode brings up something that the show doesn't really address much. Sometimes people just go missing because of things like Grimm and bandits.
And yeah, the whole thing about magic being unbelievable in a world where some people can just make portals. Honestly one of the weakest points in the whole show.
Is not weak at all. Semblance and magic are 2 completly different things in this world, they are not the smae thing and don't fuction the same way. Just because the story have multiple stuff that are not real, doesn't mean they will fallow the same rules in the world and by extension, doesn't mean at all that the characters will just beliefs everything that comes to powers. Thats their world, having semblances in their world is completly normal. Using magic without dust is not.
