- I build a sawmill shed out of lumber from the forest! I try to keep costs for the shed super cheap by re-using as much materials as I can, and sourcing materials from the forest around me. I use both milled woods, and many dead standing trees to make a structure that will keep my portable sawmill free of snow, ice, and rain. That way, I can use my sawmill year round without having to worry about the weather.

Many people ask me where I am from and where I film my projects. I am from Northern Ontario, Canada, and live in an area where off-grinding is easy because I have lots of land to build on and experiment with different buildings and materials. Everything I do is to try to be more self reliant, and to depend less on others. But that doesn't mean I don't like working together with other people on projects. I read the entire Ryan’s th-cam.com/users/postUgkxGqOCINHE0Z0E5gxzSdNi9NWGugRY5Hm2 Plans and was able to make a shed plan. Using Ryan’s Shed Plans alone, the shed itself is great. Where I wish I knew more is with respect to ground preparation and foundations. Maybe that's beyond the scope of Ryan’s Shed Plans.
There was a Canadian man named Kevin who lived in a cozy log cabin in the heart of a dense forest. He was a lumberjack by profession and had been working in the forest for many years.
Over time, he had accumulated a lot of wood and had decided to build a barn to store his wood mill and other woodworking tools.
Kevin knew that building a barn in the forest would not be an easy task, but he was determined to do it. He called his best friend, Don, to help him with the task.
Don was an expert carpenter, and he was more than happy to help his friend.
The two friends worked tirelessly for weeks to build the barn. They cut down trees, sawed them into planks, and nailed them together to create the frame of the barn. They worked from dawn to dusk, taking breaks only to sip on hot coffee and enjoy some delicious maple syrup.
Kevin and Don loved maple syrup, and they made sure to have a fresh supply at all times. They would often tap maple trees in the forest and collect the sap to make syrup. They loved the rich, sweet taste of maple syrup and would pour it over everything from pancakes to fried eggs.
As the barn began to take shape, Jack and Don decided that they did not want any barn doors inside their houses. They wanted to keep their homes clean and free of sawdust and wood chips. So, they designed the barn with large sliding doors that could be opened and closed easily.
Finally, after weeks of hard work, the barn was complete. It was a beautiful structure that blended in perfectly with the forest surroundings. Kevin and Don were proud of their creation and spent many happy hours in the barn, working on their woodworking projects and enjoying the sweet taste of maple syrup.
The barn became a symbol of their friendship, and they both knew that it would stand the test of time, just like their friendship. Whenever they looked at the barn, they were reminded of the hard work, dedication, and love that went into building it.

You wet the wood to encourage a capillary reaction. Basically the liquid will sink into the wood deeper, giving the adhesive a deeper foothold to bind the joint together.

You need a shaker box to put your screen in it helps to sort out the rock from the dirt. I work one in a lager scale

30:45 Instead of changing its function, clean it up, replace the wood as it was meant to be (ribbon connectors and all) and see if you can clean up/patch the steel pieces, give it a nice paint job and let that become your cement mixer. Since it's belt-driven, you can modify it a bit so you can have a little gas motor mounted on there to turn it. Think about your future projects where you need cement... You roll out that thing and it looks old yet brand new and you're going to have TONS of people saying 'Whoa! Where'd you get that? Where can I get one?!' because a lot of people like the old-timey aesthetic.
Remember that the wood structure needs restoration.
I've been told by my grandmother that Alum works wonders on canker sores. Put a little on your finger and place it on the sore. Within a day the Alum will dry the sore out. Alum is used to keep canned pickles crisp in the jar. Using Alum for cankers sores is an old remedy handed down for generations. Also, cut back on eating too much acidic fruits that can cause canker sores. Grandmothers born in the late 1800's were truly self-reliant and they had to be tough as nails. Remember, just a little Alum once to dry the sore.
Don is always there to help you every project. He is a good friend! I think he deserves more than a little bottle of maple syrup!!
L-shaped bench in the corner under the windows, with shelves underneath. To the right of that on the solid wall, an adjustable French cleat system for hanging items, tools, rope, chain, and shelf brackets/shelves for smaller items to keep them off the floor!

Kevin, if you take a horse shoers hoof nipper and weld a bodywork slide hammer to it, you can grab the nails in the metal and a couple slides of the slide hammer takes out even the most stubborn nails in metal roofing and siding.

My grandmother kept a gallon drum of maple syrup under her kitchen sink. After dinner she would pour us each a teacup of syrup to sip with our cookies. Thanks for bringing back this memory. Love this channel.

I was thinking like a project table and you have to have a whiteboard up on one of the walls. And this could become your home base where you introduce us to your new projects and take us through your plans and then you have your woodmill and possibly a welding area.

Kevin, maple syrup is only 52 calories per tablespoon, so everyone can eat (drink?) more maple syrup! I'm blessed to have two sons-in-law who both make their own maple syrup every spring, so I usually get some for Christmas. 🙂 I love that you said barn doors should be outside on barns. I agree! And that giant window in your sawmill shed's barn door is awesome.

Tip for cleaning up mixers.... put some brick cleaning acid and stones of various sizes in... if acid is concentrated add some water... set it off running and come back a few hours later
One idea...build a couple of steps to a pedestal in the corner so you can enjoy your seat while looking out the window.

Don’t forget to put in a big wood stove to burn all your scraps maybe use one of your fuel oil barrels and use it for a kiln to dry your lumber plus keep your shop area warm when sharpening blades and chains

Those mixers could be used for multiple things, rock washer, metal parts finisher, clothes washer, composter, meat mixer. part of a dehydrator / spice dryer or kiln. Oh and maybe even to mix cement!
NEW YORK STATE also makes fine MAPLE SYRUP, much of it relabeled in Vermont for sale in the New York City Metro area. For 48 years, no matter where we have lived, we have purchased our syrup from a family farm in Jefferson, NY, in the Catskill Mountains. The 'real deal' is well worth the price. A little goes a long way. I do NOT drink it straight, despite its having so many concentrated minerals and 'life substances' from the trees. CEMENT MIXER drive straps: I am 78 years old and we had straps like those from my father's young years. He and his father used them to drive hammer mills for milling grain and for powering stationary thrashing machines. I watched them as a child.
You may wish to consider using the other part of the shed to store milled lumber in differing lengths / sizes for ready use on future projects. Especially when you have surplus or gather reclaimed lumber.

Hi Kevin. Really enjoy your videos. I am a little concerned about running a gas sawmill for extended periods in an enclosed space. Not a good idea so hope you have a plan for exhaust and ventilation.

Try mixing 1 oz maple syrup with 1 oz cream, and 1 oz of brandy. Or mix syrup with brandy, put it in the freezer overnight. Put in blender with ice cream. FULL STOP!

Love the idea of a sharpening station and a work bench. Maybe you can figure something out like maybe a trough to go on the other side to collect the sawdust so it doesn't build up and make it easier to clean up just a thought. Great build though.
I think your plans for the shop sound great! I'd include a good bench and an emergency medical supply cabinet/shelf in there, since it's a somewhat dangerous area. Having a place to collapse if you ever pull a muscle or get a bad cut? Where you can easily reach at least some basic bandages and painkillers, and maybe keep some bottled water there to wash down the painkillers/clean out a wound? I mean, seriously hope you never have need for that, obviously.

Put powered alum on the canker sore used for pickles in spice section of stores. Grandma taught us that, should heal up in a day . usually only have to do it once or twice.

Blacksmith Shop? Also make a Summer Kitchen with a wood burning Oven/Range/Stove, mouse proof cabinets, Loft storage or bunk area.
Sears Kenmore (1940s?) made one that looked like a modern white enamel range.
That's pretty amazing, 50' bucks to build a sawmill shed, of that size. btw kevin, you could also build an overhang shelter over that barn door opening to keep the ice from building up over that area. Shed is indeed shaping up! looks awesome.
BTW I've always just rinsed my mouth with peroxide for cankers its works well..

Some of the old tractors had a PTO wheel that would use those belts to power a sawmill and other items. I'll bet that's how that cement mixer was powered.
Great job on the Saws-ma-hall... yes benches around the windows, plus a floating movable bench... of course a floor would be nice but not wood but pavers right up to the saw mill. That would make it so much easier to clean...got one more idea 💡 sliding wall between the shop and saw mill,,, 😏the wall would have a door and windows.... Ah 😳

I think you should sink a ceder log in the ground 3-4 feet somewhere you can walk around it and mount you vise to to top of it to do you chainsaw sharpening. As for you rock washer how about cut larger holes in the tub a then bend or roll the smaller grating around it but leaving as much room as possible between drum and grating so it will still turn that way you will get 3 different sizes of washed rocks.
I really enjoy your work. I also totally respect your work ethic and the fact that you take such good care and maintain your equipment and tools...

Canker advice, I get them all the time. Keep a bottle of mouthwash handy, swish it in your mouth at least once an hour, it will heal in 2 days or less.
Cool barn, I would just put a wooden floor in there even if it’s just floating so you’re not walking around on mud I would also put maybe some rolled down tarps or something in the front when you’re not using it just to keep snow rain or whatever out other than that. Damn impressive.😊

That old mixer is driven by a Hit n Miss engine and is likely a very early machine.
Would love to see you get and restore a Hit n Miss engine to run that mixer with.
Or even a big old tractor you can drive it off the flywheel of
Regarding the super mixer...
I think, it would be super cool to convert it into your rock washer.
But whichever one you convert, small or large, I think it would be cool if you hook the crank up to your solar.
Also, if you are washing dirty Sandy rocks,
If you collect the screened dirt/sand that washes off, you have screened gravel/sand
As well as the rocks.

Hmm, What do I think what you should do with the extra s[ace in your sawmill? Take your tape measure and pull it out as far as you can and ask yourself how long have you've been here! Wile you're at it, make some storage space for your cordless extension cords! I miss Bean the dog.
I can’t wait to I see your sawmill barn done are you going to insulate it to stay warm when you’re cutting board in winter I think you should insulate it and put the heating system that so you don’t get sick
