    I’ve often felt that it’s a little like coarse fishing. In that you enjoy the process. The challenge. The location. But the fish go back in and you (hopefully) head home happy. In photography much of the catch goes back into the hard drive. But every now and then there’s a “specimen”, and worth printing to be enjoyed long after the enjoyment of the fishing trip itself fades from the memory 🙂👍

      Spot on Dave, I’ve often thought of that comparison also and in fact I think we’ve discussed it before. Actually the following day to recording this, went to Holme and got a keep net full 😊

    Yayyy, he's back ...bit deep'n meaningful for a Sunday 😲😁
    So .....in answering one question you've posed another ...what will you do with the prints ? Being pessimistic you'll get 4 print worthy images per month ,so that's 48 prints in a year , how big's your house 🤔😁
    FWIW I feel we all do photography for the following ( hobbyists not pro's I'm talking about here ):
    To capture a moment in time giving you a permanent record /memory & confirming you were there .
    Recognition /praise / acknowledgement / affirmation from others that you are good at what you do . We all like to hear good things about ourselves .
    There are many other reasons : exercise , mental health, enjoyment ,a desire to spend money on stuff ,we enjoy the learning / creative process , gets us out of the house etc etc but in my mind these are secondary . No matter what we tell ourselves or others 😁
    Just my thoughts obviously .
    After listening to Darren's idea about prints as a lasting reminder for the family when he's shuffled off thus mortal coil , I'm going to do just that ,print at least 1 image from each trip out . Absolutely no idea what I'll do with them all though 😅 I'll use the print labs though as can't justify the cost of a printer currently 🥺

      Hey Lynne, great comment! Agree with all your points on ‘why’. To start with 4 walls designated to receive prints, some of my landscapes and some of my boys. It’s all part of the ‘grand plan’ though really but I’m hoping it just adds something extra to the creating process. Hopefully speak soon, take care

    I took up photography as an excuse to explore the countryside as i did when i was a youngster . Ive always been creative and the two just seem to fit together . Having survived 3 big heart attacks it helps me relax , the sound & smell of a woodland the sound & smell of the coast is a great medicine .

    Really enjoyed this video, Jamie I totally agree with you “ it’s all about catching that moment in time “ and how nature changes over time and of course storing that memory at that particular moment. Agree, print your favourite images hang them on your wall and be proud of them,they will also make other people happy too when they visit you.

    Lovely to see you back Jamie, especially as you chose Norfolk for your visit. I love the way the light makes things look and that’s what I love to photograph. I know that’s the essence of photography anyway but I think it makes us look at the world in a very special way too.
    I brought a very expensive printer when I was still working, for the same reasons as you said. What I hadn’t factored in was how expensive both the ink and the paper would be. It was costing me a small fortune to print my work, especially as there is a bit of an art to it. I did invest in a printing course with Epson but still had a few failures, which again is costly. So my printer sits unused in my study as it needs 3 cartridges to be replaced at a cost of £58 each at the last time I looked, which was some time ago now. I can’t even give away my printer let alone sell it. I’m just waiting for my husband to take it to the tip for me. I use loxley printers now for all my printing. They give a great service.

    • @JamieOverland
      @JamieOverland  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Sheila, hope you are well. I have the printer now and yes, the ink and paper is costly for sure. I’m hoping to stock up on paper at the The Photography Show as there are normally some good discounts on then. The inks aren’t cheap either, but the way I’m looking at it, it’s an extension of my photography and I have to accept the hobby isn’t a cheap one!!

  • @danhiggins8733
    @danhiggins8733 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So here is a thought. I, too, have done landscape photography for years. As with you, it is a hobby, not a profession. When I retired I began to spend time with a local non-profit. They happened to do work where a few large prints might be useful so I offered to make up a couple for them. They came back said they actually would like to sell them to raise funds. My response what, "What? No one is going to buy my images. I don't even know how to go about selling them." Yet over the past year they have offered various prints from my collection for significant donors. And just a week ago 3 of my prints (2'x3' acrylic as that is what they wanted to do) were sold during one of their fund raising events for hundreds of dollars each. The non-profit pays for the printing. Nothing comes back to me. It is my hobby, after hall, and I want to keep it that way. I don't attempt to cover my costs or get tax breaks. But simply being able to share my work in a way that helps others and then knowing that people who are similarly helping others will have one of my prints on their wall is quite gratifying. It adds a significant motivation to finding and creating a good image. Just throwing it out there.

    Hi Jamie, I tend to agree with Peter Fritz, as I've been in the same boat. I really enjoy what nature provides us and to capture this and view it whenever is good for the soul. At 75 I still enjoy that early morning sunrise at silly hour as you witness the dawning of a new day, make a book, share on social media as there are people that can't get out to see this so they view it through your images, surely this is enough motivation to keep taking images. ps: your image of the woodland at 12.20 was really worth printing. Thanks for the video.

    • @JamieOverland

  • @johnscratchley3288
    @johnscratchley3288 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I enjoyed your video (and the photos), as an amateur photographer, I have often asked myself the very questions you did and I come up with fact that I enjoyed the moment and captured a memory some of which goes to social media, the odd one gets printed or even finds its way into a photo-book. The book keeps those memories alive although after awhile, the book sits there in a bookcase. For me it's getting out, finding a challenge taking the shot and getting exercise. A great many images go into the trash bin but every once in awhile bingo! It's a hobby I love doing because I feel I'm creating as well as recording a special moment in time. I guess it amounts to the satisfaction of capturing something that impacted on me. Cheers!

    • @JamieOverland
      @JamieOverland  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a great perspective on it John, thanks for taking the time to comment. Others have related it to fishing i.e. that 'bingo' moment you mention is the same as landing a decent size fish every now and again. You never know what you will catch/capture until you get out!

    Well hello there Mr. Overland. I think summer time is the hardest time for landscape photographers. Sunrise at stupid o'clock and sunset so late. As for the question, why do we take pictures and what do we do with them is one that many are asking lately. For me, photography is what gets me out in nature, even if I don't get any images. I print and frame some and hang them around my house and I have made calendars for friends and family. Who knows what will happen to al the pictures over years and years of been stored on a hard drive when I'm gone??? Most won't mean anything to anyone but me. But I enjoy taking pictures so I will continue on.

I love them and we have had discussions about it and his answer I think resonates with me - he said I am making memories Al, simple as. I can relate that to the photography for sure. I, like yourself (and probably many others atm) am going through a slump - I don't even think it's a summer thing either. I am sure the urge to take images again will come back but I am not pushing it atm.

    I thought you were going to print for the newly decorated office/music room. Your good lady is still waiting then.................
    Memories, your son's graduation that has got to be the proudest moment. Print that image & the one you showed in the Pubcast. Then & now is a beginning & an end.

    Hi Jamie , i always struggle with motivation over the summer months , early sunrises late sunsets etc etc. Like you for me its a hobby and not something i am considering turning into a vocation. I like the ability to choose when i go out what i shoot when i want to produce the image and or video, i enjoy the whole process and dont want it to become a burden on having to produce to a deadline or constantly chasing the next customer etc that for me would take away the whole reason i love to get out with my camera. The freedom from your everyday worries when your out, seeing new places, looking at old places with different eyes and in years to come looking back on all your images and the memories they hopefully invoke , and i can watch some of it back here on youtube. I do have images printed into photo books and so have them to flick through when i want , maybe i need to do more of this and the framed print side is something i would like to dabble with . Look forward to seeing more from you and your journey into the world of print, take care mate .

    Jamie, Thanks for taking me along on your literal and philosophical travels. There are as you pointed out as many reasons for taking photos as there are people taking them. Markus from "Photography Online" pointed out that in the spectrum of images it is the ones at the opposite ends which we find most important... Snaps of family and personal events with little or no compositional value are some of the most emotional and meaningful images we will ever take. On the opposite end are those images we feel are the top 1 or 2 % which we share, print and hang on our walls.
    So why do I take the other 90% of the images? To practice and become better at what we love. My wife is a dancer and choreographer. She can't hear music without seeing dancers. Like her but as a photographer, I can't see light on a subject and not see images. Regardless of whether or not I have a camera, I still see and appreciate the beauty of everything around me. Combine that with a love of nature and being outdoors, the two give me an excuse/reason to take photos.

    • @JamieOverland
      @JamieOverland  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your thoughtful response. This is definitely one of the main reasons I go out, is to practice and hopefully improve the craft. I am looking forward to being able to take it to a new level with printing also

    Keeping the memories, so that your grandchildren can say 'Do you remember that Grandad?' and you can reply 'Where's the nurse ... I think I want the toilet !'
    I really like the shot of the trees leading down to the tiny windmill and on to the sea; mainly for the clouds above it all, very Constablesque.
    Printers .... mine died at the beginning of lockdown and I haven't bought a new one. In truth, I rarely printed my own work and it was more often used for printing text. Now I'm not against printing per se but if the result is you print a photo and you then stick it in a folder in a cupboard then how's that different from a hard drive ... except it takes up more space. If its occasional photo printing for specific purposes its probably financially cheaper to go talk to a local professional printer first rather than have a large plastic breezeblock taking up desk space, plus inks, plus multiple papers (buy frame and picture mount first as its easier to print to size than to find frame and insert to an odd sized photo. Buying a frame and insert at the printers is also expensive and you may have limited choice).
    I've got drawers of photo albums of prints from back in the day, do I ever look at them ... nope, I look at the scans on a computer.

      @JamieOverland  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ironically I manage print buying for a living so you would think I could get a decent deal on outsourcing it, but I guess it’s also about learning a new skill and giving me the flexibility to run off an A4 of a shot I’ve just edited to see whether it’s worth the effort and cost of putting a frame round it! Nice to hear from you Iain as always 👍

    I'm currently going through exactly this mindset myself at the moment......gear itself is getting more and more unaffordable for myself as I guess many others, so getting new is getting impossible. I have a nice little Z5 kit and X100V, but find myself looking at the old DSLR market and lenses...as thats all thats affordable to me now...and I actually miss the feel and shooting experience of a DSLR.....thats the gear side of it, but my images are shared on FLICKR, occasionally INSTA but have to crop for that...dont like it.....I've started printing again....thats helping.......just a small A4 printer, printing 6x4's which is a size I love.....but apart from that.....my images are sat on a HD. It does make you wonder....

    Good decision, BTW, to invest in a printer. It is tremendously satisfying to see your image in a physical print.

    Great location, sad to hear you didn’t want to shoot. But remember it doesn’t pay the bills it pays the heart and mind. Fill them walls with print x good to see you back. I was shouting at you saying shoot that coast. Shoot them trees, shoot that chap in the bunker. 🤣👍 I’ll send you some requests for print 👍

    Jamie, you do it because like all photographers you’re mad, bad & dangerous to know. Just look at Gary…
