Not abandoned, repurposed for many local community activities. Airfield is still used as a transportation hub. The old base hospital and housing are used for training for military, law enforcement and fire service. They even rent it out to reenactors and airsoft. Used it many times, even slept in the structures after a bit of a clean out.

I lived there when I was in the 6th and 7th grade, in 1966 to 1968. My house is shown at minute 1:09. All of the homes I lived in during my childhood are now gone. Sad.

It would be nice to be able to pass taxpayers money away like this. And if anyone questions it
They are told “pay your fair share”

I worked law enforcement in 1969 thru 1072. Gate shack duty and perimeter & flight line patrolling were my biggest memories of that time.

I worked here in 1978 and 1979 remodeling the houses and barracks. R.G.Metz had the contract and I worked for them. What a huge waste.

Seems to be standard practice when shutting down a site or facility to let it go to shit. Sure sometimes a local community will come in and repurpose some of the facilities, but mostly they're left to the elements and the vandals and looters.

We should be ashamed of all that wasted housing and infrastructure. How many veterans could have been housed, lives saved, hope revived and new careers started. Historians won't be kind to us.

Cool vid. Checked out that place the other day. I was thinking to myself how cool it would be to get some drone footage of the place then saw how close it was to an active airfeild, then kicked the thought out of my mind. I'm glad some had the balls to do it. The footage you took is pretty cool. It captures the enormity of the place.👍

I was stationed at GAFB from 1990-1992. I lived in base housing on the corner of George Blvd and W. Sheppard St. I was really sad to see the base close. It was a great place to be assigned to.

Could have gone a long way to address the homeless problem -- add some training and a free clinic and you would improve the lives of many. Not just the homeless but also the people that have to deal with the uncontrolled homeless issue. The people around San Francisco would be better off not having so many homeless people and the homeless would have safer housing and training to get them back on their feet.

I lived in base housing 1990-1992. I heard that one plan when the base closed was to use the base housing for low income housing. I also heard that that plan was rejected because the housing facilities were sub-standard. Good enough for our military, but not good enough for an6one who just needs a roof over their head.

Finished my term there in June 1973. Was there for two years in the MMS squadron. Loved the F-4's.

Thanks for posting, I was stationed there in 1973-74 and the best thing I can say about the place was my son was born there. I'm pretty sure your drone flew over my old house on base in the first few seconds.

I filmed this a few years ago but I was going through some of the houses and started collecting a bunch of little trinkets I found and piled them in one of the garages. I never took anything, at the time I figured everything was haunted lol, but I do remember finding some WrestleMania posters, a hukkah, some gi joes, half torn California flag, a collection of spoons and forks. Again that was a few years ago I forgot the rest, but maybe it was your garage I was piling it in or maybe some of your stuff haha. Apparently once or twice a year there is a giant paintball game there but when I remember it I always seem to miss it.

you would be surprised how much stuff people left even after all these years of people exploring it. I had gathered a little pile of stuff like a bong, a wwf wrestling blanket, a stretch Armstrong and some random stuff. I was gonna take it but figured its junk and don't want any curses or anything lol. I've watched some TH-cam videos of people exploring the old hospital there and freaking out but im not that brave.

Real talk. 909 adventures found a hidden ,key card access only command center. In the movie house!!! Looks like something straight out of a 80s war drama .
I was told by 2 different old employees this was a nuke ready instillation.
it had the top "trainers" for AF (weasels). They also "taught " people to fly the stealth (a nuke loadable air craft) .
I believe because it had high raking government officials on it at that time (70s-late80s) .it HAS a big underground fall out base....
Just saying There is more to this site!!!

    Hello Mexishark,
i was wondering if i could use a snippet of your video to showcase GEORGE AFB in one of my videos for my airsoft friends, since we played there.
Let me know, thanks in advance.

It is in the middle of nowhere, however it is a wasted situation when you can house some of L.A.'s homeless community there.
