*fellow young person here I am literally going to read war and peace this year because this musical got me so INVESTED IN THE STORY. Which I think is pretty amazing. Without great comet, I would have spent my whole life without giving war and peace a second thought.
Dear Evan Hansen isn't a bad show, but compared to this..?!? Gosh I get chills every time I watch this performance. There's just so much life in that stage. Even from behind our screens, I feel like you can feel the happiness and energy in that room. The music, staging, actors, and everything else about this show was incredible. It's so sad that it ended so early. Hoping the revival and/or national tour comes soon!! :D
Dear Evan Hansen won because it so intimately and accurately captured the human heart and its day-to-day personal struggles. There’s never been anything that made me feel so seen and heard, as it did for so many others all over the world. As the show itself says: You Will Be Found! Where was the message that people took from Great Comet? Hmm?? There’s a thousand pieces like Great Comet that present characters and their loves in this very elaborate and melodramatic way. You’d be lucky to find something that matches Dear Evan Hansen.
@@samosullivan1744 dear Evan Hansen won because it was more popular, because the songs are very poppy, relatable and digestible. The story is not a heartfelt one, but rather deceitful. It is about a kid that lies about being the best friend of someone who committed suicide, then gets everything he ever wanted, an the consequences of what he did are not even that harsh. I get that Evan may be relatable but the “you will be found” thing is honestly horrible in context, the suicide of Connor was used as a device to move the story forward and it is exploited because everything evan does is seen as he is a victim. Since the musical doesn’t really treat Alana and Jared seriously enough as fully fleshed out characters we don’t get to see how much of a jerk Evan is. We are forced to relate more with Evan since he is the protagonist, but it is actually a twisted tale that screams, oh poor thing, he’s got social anxiety and depression, and on top of that he is lonely, we should feel bad for him even if he destroys a family and betrays the trust of other people who don’t matter because they aren’t poor Evan who has a mental illness . I don’t think deh should be praised with best musical because it does not have an honest story nor I think it deserves to win a tony for best orchestrations, they are minimalistic, they are intimate and fit the mood, but really? Great comet was better in that category.
@@lorenasiu3113 It is an honest story, because it portrays modern-day people with all their flaws. Besides, the whole story leads up to the characters revealing the truths about themselves they don’t want to admit (Evan’s suicide attempt, for example), so I honestly don’t see how you can’t call it an honest story!
@@samosullivan1744 I love Dear Evan Hansen. It's one of my favorite musicals. But I have to agree that this one is better. To address your final point first: you say there's no piece that matches Evan Hansen? There absolutely is. Next to normal. It had the same director and the two shows are fairly easy to group together- they both portray a character's struggle with mental health, a family's struggle with loss, and they have some sort of hallucination-ghost person (Gabe in n2n and Connor in deh). But next to normal is easily better from an objective standpoint and, honestly, an emotional one. Everything means something. Every color (be it referenced in lighting, costumes, or even lyrics), every phrase, every note, everything. Every character is so well developed. Diana's struggle with mental health is real. Next to normal is probably the most effective musical I've ever seen, though I do think great comet is up there as well, I just haven't had as much time to analyze it (I'm not sure it'll top n2n for me, but it's definitely very strong). The reason I say it's better from an emotional standpoint is that it lacks the problematic parts of deh that many people have pointed out. Evan is a liar, and he's not a good person. I don't believe that every protagonist has to be good, or that everyone who acts poorly has to be punished. That's not how it is in real life, and this is more real. But if you want to have your fanbase be able to self insert them into your main character, he should probably not base all of the removal of his struggles on the lies that he tells a grieving family. And then there's the thing pointed out by many people struggling with Evan's issues- they're not realistic to what it's actually like to have social anxiety. Even ignoring the circumstances under which you will be found is performed, it's most certainly problematic. Great comet may not have an underlying message, but it also doesn't have to to be a great or even original musical. What message does cats have? And yet, that held the title of longest running musical for years before phantom topped it (and what's the message of phantom? I dare you to find one that you can truly convince me is the message, there are plenty of great things that you can take away from it, but I don't think any of them are the overall purpose of the show, and I'm *quite* familiar with it. It's maybe not the biggest masterpiece ever, but it is generally well written. Not every great show needs a takeaway to be great.) And yes, of course there are lots of musicals similar to great comet. That's the beauty of inspiration. But I dare you to find one that does quite what great comet does with its staging and its audience. By far, the music in this show is better than deh- deh doesn't have bad music, and I quite like the way words fail is done (though I'd argue that's not exactly the only show that's done a song that way, see flowers from hadestown, also uses the non repetitive style to drive in how defeated they feel). But the music in this show is incredible. It's interesting. Dear Evan Hansen uses a more basic pop style, and while that isn't bad and it's also not like great comet reinvented the musical theater style, it's not nearly as unpredictable or unique. And it's well written. The little things that are included. And some of that can be attributed to the source material, I'm sure, but it also takes a great writer to adapt something effectively and include those details without it feeling forced. For example, Natasha saying 'I love him. I know him' about Andrey and 'I love him. I love him' about Anatole. It's a stark difference in their relationships. She knows Andrey. It's safe. She doesn't know Anatole, but she loves him. It's a blink and you miss it difference, but it drives in character. Or the similarities between Anatole and Helene being driven in by how they try to convince Natasha to come to the ball. They use the same phrase- you will be the prettiest there. It's those little things that make a musical truly amazing. I dare you to find more than a few in deh. I've noticed these, and I'm pretty sure I've seen more, in the week that I've been listening to great comet. And again, man, the staging! It's just incredible. I'm planning to be a director someday, and I'd kill to get to block something on a stage like that. The opportunities for audience interaction- and the way that they use them- and the three-dimensionality of it? It's exceptional! And it's used so well, too. The audience interaction is very well placed, used to drive in tension, give character to the show and to the characters themselves, it lets the people watching connect to it. Obviously I can't name every example of all of these things cause this is long enough as it is but much as I do love and enjoy deh, this show is just better. Imagine sitting in that theater while it's playing. As neat as it would be to see deh live, there's no way it could compare to great comet. Even if you're not in the middle of the stage or on the far sides, even watching from the normal seats, the way it's built makes it all so much more intimate. Which also allows you to connect to the story.
@@juliasings6131 Alright, challenge accepted! The message of Cats is about the dangers of tribalism (a very important one for these divided times) as the Jellicles learn to accept Grizabella back into their tribe. There are multiple messages in Phantom but I’d say the most recurrent one is to not hide yourself. We see it in Christine’s journey from nervous, led-by-the-nose chorus girl to Opera Star who takes matters into her own hands and in her endeavours to take off the Phantom’s mask. And by the end, he learns her message deciding to leave his underground hideout leaving his mask behind. “It’s over now, the music of the night” - He’s moving out of the dark and into the daylight. And at the very end, when Meg holds his mask up, it’s like she’s holding it out to the audience as if to say: What do we do now? Do we cover ourselves up out of fear of being shunned by the world or conceal our true loves for another? You’ve seen this story, what about yours?

the fact that they pull dave up onstage with them makes me tear up a little to this day the fact that this clip ends with best orchestrations going to DEH... oof.
I don't know how the Tonys' politics work exactly, but I really feel like they awarded the name more than the work. If Lac hadn't arranged for Hamilton, or if the DEH arranger had been anyone else, I doubt they would've considered DEH Best Orchestration material.

Everything about this performance was so iconic like?? The cast? Iconic? The audience being confused but loving it? Iconic. Josh Groban bringing Dave Malloy to the stage? Iconic. This musical deserved so much better
And the fact that best orchestrations and best score went to DEH... there's like 3 chords in that whole show. How is that better music than something like comet? Like I enjoy the music of DEH, but there is no doubting that comets music is superior to everything on that year. The Tony committee is so freakin corrupt. We saw that with Finding Neverland not getting a single nom just because some of its salty former creative team was on the tony committee that year and wanted to be petty. Like, come on. Why have an award show for the most outstanding work when the most outstanding shows don't get awards? Still watch it every year though😂
Some girl I know who's a musical theatre major claimed the transition between the electropop and folk music in Great Comet was "jarring." IBut that's what makes the musical SO AMAZING! It's unconventional! It sounds different from EVERY OTHER SHOW on Broadway. It ropes you into the world and tells a story using music that infiltrates your soul and makes it unforgettable
I knew nothing about GC when I watched the Tony’s, but when I saw this performance I thought for sure it was going to win Best Musical. I loved DEH but I didn’t think there was any way it could compete with GC. I was absolutely fucking baffled when DEH won.
I was sure that DEH would win best musical just because of how popular it became, and when it won I was ok with that. But when it won best score and composition over Comet I was pissed. DEH has like three or four chords and boring instrumentals. Comet has such a new and interesting set of chords and instruments it's insane. Sadly there'll never be another musical like Comet due to the treatment of the show
This show just made its Canadian premier in Toronto. I was luckily enough to just recently see it. It is one of the most underrated and unforgettable musical productions I have ever seen. It’s one of my new musical obsessions. I will never forgive the Tony’s knowing that this lost to Dear, Evan Hanson.
Dust and Ashes rivals songs like Defying Gravity. The Great Comet Of 1812 should have made it big like Hamilton. There is no content there is no nothing for this amazing musical.
Stacey Varos Isn’t it? Too bad people could relate more to the American Revolution and hip-hop rap than War & Peace set in half-folkish electropopera. It really should have gotten as popular and been as long-lasting. You’ll find many gems off-Broadway, though. Try Hadestown for a start.
Madeline Adair It is??????? Oh my god!!! Now I’m so ready for both Hadestown to hit Broadway and Dave Malloy’s up-and-coming four-hour off-Broadway Moby Dick musical. And did you hear? Denee Benton is gonna join Hamilton as Eliza!! Now three of the most known Natasha actors (Pippa, Shoba) have also gotten Eliza roles!!
Okay no shade to Dear Evan Hansen, I understand that it is a very important musical to a lot of people, and that it is more appealing in a conventional modern stand point, but it breaks my heart NP&TCO1812 didn’t win, because I feel like it brought a lot more to the table and honestly, was simply better than DEH.
Alex S. Lol okay, I also call it Npatco1812 and the great comet, but I see plenty of people do it. also I would imagine any of this is more initalism than it is abbreviation but yeah
you're right & I am surprised I haven't seen anyone else do it before considering the amount of time i spend browsing the broadway corner of the internet
@@AnneBarschall Natasha and Pierre is unique, but i dont know if i would call it revolutionary exactly. Immersive theatre has existed in shows around the world, and even off Broadway with pieces like Sleep No More, long before Natasha and Pierre came around. NandP is really just the first example of something like this on Broadway. Im not saying its bad or anything by any stretch of the imagination, but I'd hesitate to call it revolutionary.
I will forever be salty that this show only one 2 Tony’s! What an absolutely stunning show that deserved to be on Broadway for so much longer! I wish I could have seen this show. ❤️
I've never found myself NOT smiling while watching these recordings. I'm so sad that I got into the Great Comet a month before it's closing & Really hope they bring it back because God the happiness that their performances transmit, even through a screen, is absolutely show-stopping.
Watching this for the umpteenth time, I've realized you can't tell where the ensemble stops and the audience begins. This show is what theatre is all about.
It was freaking robbed, I'm still angry, Jesus help me. All I hope is that The Great Comet will come back one day with the most successful revival in the history of Broadway!
I will never stop being pissed off that this show didn't win best orchestrations or best original score. Like giving those awards to Dear Evan Hansen is sick and twisted. Dave Malloy was ROBBED. The Great Comet was nominated for 12 Tonys and only got 2, they gave this performance and came away with just 2 from 12. If I try and comprehend how that was the case I lose brain cells. So sad I'll never see this show live.
It''s cos DEH was super over-hyped and this show sadly didn't receive anywhere near the widespread attention it deserved, plus shows with actual orchestras rather than bands these days tend to get overlooked, in spite of the fact that it's MUCH harder to properly orchestrate than it is to write for a 5 or 6 piece band. Don't get me wrong, DEH has some fab music, but it's all very "pop" and panders to a wider demographic, whereas the Great Comet score and songs are far better crafted and display a great deal more intelligence, elegance and subtlety of composition than the overtly heartstring-tugging, ostentatiously uplifting nature of Pasek and Paul's music.
I feel bad because there are so many great musicals and when one wins you feel like the rest were robbed. I love Dear Evan Hansen but I also love The Great Comet and I feel like they should bring it back :))
I agree, it's hard to choose, but great comet was honestly superior to deh in so many ways. They should have at least have great comet best orchestration or score...
I honestly think Great Comet was underrated it’s truly spectacular. The problem was that it wasn’t hyped up like Dear Evan Hansen and the others and I think it’s box office suffered after Josh Groban’s departure.
I was rooting for DEH and come from away and then I saw this performance and I got pissed about the awards DEH won Dx gah I wish I could still see this show 😭
i have revisited this performance at least 3 times this week. i havent thought about dear evan hansen in at least 7 months up until im writing this. this show was robbed so fckin badly
This performance is one of my favorite clips of all time of musical theater because of the sheer joy you can see on the performers’ faces. They are so happy to be performing
Dear Evan Hansen is *quacking.* (Jk, jk, DEH is cool) I didn't know how much I needed to see Marya and Hélène make out in HD until now, holy cricket. I've been waiting for this version to be uploaded for way too long, so thank you very much!
seeing this pop up on my youtube feed totally took me back to when I was excitedly sitting on my parents bed watching the tonys for hamilton, but completely falling in love with this show instead. its so damn good :'). i wish i could have seen this show in person though
I have never seen this beautiful show, but I have been listening to the album for well over a year. Like everybody says, it deserves a lot more credit. This show is tied with Rent as my favorite and best Broadway show ever. I even made my senior quote a couple of lines from "Pierre". Also, this is one of the best and most revolutionary shows of the past few years, and of all time. (A lot better than, Hamilton, among others, even though I am still a big fan). Also, thanks for uploading this!

I've seen two different local productions of Great Comet and even from that I can honestly say that Balaga/The Abduction is the best experience I've ever had in a theater audience. If it had been close to me I would have gone broke seeing it every week.
When they announced the nominees for Choreography I was really hoping this or Bandstand would win. As much as I’m sad this didn’t win I’m so happy about Bandstand winning because that story was so important to me as a granddaughter of World War II veterans. Why have an award show for the most outstanding work when the most outstanding shows don't get awards? Still watch it every year though😂
Agreed about DEH, but honestly I think Finding Neverland was a pretty weak show that wouldn't have gotten nominated anyway.
AGREE 100% ABOUT THE ORCHESTRATION
@@evah1928 yes I totally second that
Some girl I know who's a musical theatre major claimed the transition between the electropop and folk music in Great Comet was "jarring."
IBut that's what makes the musical SO AMAZING! It's unconventional! It sounds different from EVERY OTHER SHOW on Broadway. It ropes you into the world and tells a story using music that infiltrates your soul and makes it unforgettable
@@rachelf5466 Oh my gosh I can not agree more.
The Tony for Best Musical almost always goes to the safest show, rather than the greatest show.
Sadly there'll never be another musical like Comet due to the treatment of the show
*REVIVE THE GREAT COMET*
This show just made its Canadian premier in Toronto. I was luckily enough to just recently see it. It is one of the most underrated and unforgettable musical productions I have ever seen. It’s one of my new musical obsessions. I will never forgive the Tony’s knowing that this lost to Dear, Evan Hanson.
Omg seriously!!! Holy shit that sounds so exciting. Had no clue they were opening again. Do you think they’ll do the same in America?
I just saw it this week! God I was reminded how snubbed this musical was. Also they just got moved to mirvish next summer! Exciting stuff
the abduction literally has chaotic energy and i love it
Seeing Brandon Uranowitz and Balaga together was something I didn’t know I needed until now
Best crossover.
Zoe Daisy when?
3:07
Damn now I’m even more sad about that fact that both this AND Falsettos were robbed that year
i love how its
“lucas steele
josh groban”
and the balaga is simply *balaga*
Dust and Ashes rivals songs like Defying Gravity. The Great Comet Of 1812 should have made it big like Hamilton. There is no content there is no nothing for this amazing musical.
Stacey Varos Isn’t it? Too bad people could relate more to the American Revolution and hip-hop rap than War & Peace set in half-folkish electropopera. It really should have gotten as popular and been as long-lasting.
You’ll find many gems off-Broadway, though. Try Hadestown for a start.
@@laurelcrown9293 Hadestown is wonderful. It's coming to Broadway in 2019!
Okay no shade to Dear Evan Hansen, I understand that it is a very important musical to a lot of people, and that it is more appealing in a conventional modern stand point, but it breaks my heart NP&TCO1812 didn’t win, because I feel like it brought a lot more to the table and honestly, was simply better than DEH.
this is the first time i have ever seen the show abbreviated in that way
They went with safe and dumbed down rather than the show that was revolutionary in many respects.
This is such an iconic performance they deserved the Tony for this alone!
Josh Groban singing "Всего хорошего, на посошок, поехали" is my new aesthetic
I will forever be salty that this show only one 2 Tony’s! What an absolutely stunning show that deserved to be on Broadway for so much longer! I wish I could have seen this show. ❤️
Cobert looks thrilled and flustered to have both amber and grace there and honestly SAME DUDE
It is a DESGRACE to the world that Lucas Steele didn't win the tony for Anatole (yes I'm still salty)
Everyone is still salty
Chloe Eagan Except bland, unseasoned DEH lol
Steph Piano Deh didn’t even win the best featured actor award
STAY SALTY
I've never found myself NOT smiling while watching these recordings. I'm so sad that I got into the Great Comet a month before it's closing & Really hope they bring it back because God the happiness that their performances transmit, even through a screen, is absolutely show-stopping.
I really sad I got into just a months ago 😭😭
revival needs to happen bro
Watching this for the umpteenth time, I've realized you can't tell where the ensemble stops and the audience begins. This show is what theatre is all about.
Remember when this aired and it was the best thing to happen at the tonys that year and, for a brief shining moment, we were all happy? :’)
It was freaking robbed, I'm still angry, Jesus help me.
All I hope is that The Great Comet will come back one day with the most successful revival in the history of Broadway!
Anatole rocking out on the violin is everything
Also great comet was robbed of the tonies it deserved
You're👏user👏name👏is👏eve👏ry👏thing👏
I honestly think Great Comet was underrated it’s truly spectacular. The problem was that it wasn’t hyped up like Dear Evan Hansen and the others and I think it’s box office suffered after Josh Groban’s departure.
this musical will always have such an impact on me. it deserved so much better and deserved much more praise
I was rooting for DEH and come from away and then I saw this performance and I got pissed about the awards DEH won Dx gah I wish I could still see this show 😭
i have revisited this performance at least 3 times this week. i havent thought about dear evan hansen in at least 7 months up until im writing this. this show was robbed so fckin badly
same here, you said it exactly right.
and can i just say, i absolutely love your profile pic of chuu? you seem to have great taste in music lmao
the amount of energy in this preformance is insane
This performance is one of my favorite clips of all time of musical theater because of the sheer joy you can see on the performers’ faces. They are so happy to be performing
After loving this musical for years this is the first time I realized anatole literally says live laugh love
Dear Evan Hansen is *quacking.*
(Jk, jk, DEH is cool)
I didn't know how much I needed to see Marya and Hélène make out in HD until now, holy cricket.
I've been waiting for this version to be uploaded for way too long, so thank you very much!
quacking
Same! Cuz CBS had it uploaded last year but they took it down after like 2 months
I've seen over 200 musicals and plays in my life and this is the most entertaining and interactive show I've even seen in my life
utterly, utterly, UTTERLY robbed. love this show
#justiceforgreatcomet Lets make this trending everyboby
*How the fuck did this not win Best Musical*
the hug josh gives dave
Great Comet deserved better. I'm still devastated that it's just gone.
2:05 Lucas knows how to properly swoosh his coat
was that marya and helene making out?
Yes
Yes
Yes, yes it was.
Yes :)
Tea👏
seeing this pop up on my youtube feed totally took me back to when I was excitedly sitting on my parents bed watching the tonys for hamilton, but completely falling in love with this show instead. its so damn good :'). i wish i could have seen this show in person though
Its been years and I'm still not over this
What I would give to see this show on Broadway just once
I loved how, halfway through, Josh pulled Dave onto the stage to join them
I have never seen this beautiful show, but I have been listening to the album for well over a year.
Also, thanks for uploading this!
which lines did you use?
@@alexs.3383 "There's a sickness in the world, and everyone knows". I used it because it heavily relates to the way the world is today, that is part of what makes this show great.
love that & agree
I got to see this as my first ever broadway show and it was INCREDIBLE they were robbed at the Tony's 😢
Saw the DEH movie trailer and I just need to rewatch this. Great Comet deserves the world.
Denee's smile is so infectious ⛦◜▿◝
josh groban dancing and hugging with dave malloy 😢 awww
thank you for posting!!!! never forget the great robbery of the great comet of 2017
I've seen two different local productions of Great Comet and even from that I can honestly say that Balaga/The Abduction is the best experience I've ever had in a theater audience. If it had been close to me I would have gone broke seeing it every week.
Probably the Tony performance that has most sold me on seeing the show live. I really wish I was able to visit NYC during the year it was open T_T
7 years later and I’m still salty
real 😭😭
I’m crying
Balaga just vibin as always :)
it's been four years and I'm still salty
This was one of the best shows I have ever seen and am very sad of it being gone ..
hell yeah that's how you do an introduction speech
Literal chills when watching this
This is a theatrical masterpiece
Marvelous great show and Josh groban at his best.
GOD BLESS YOUUUUUUUUU
It is crazy how they didnt get the tony, they blew dear evan Hansen out of the park
More than a year ago and I'm still salty
3:49 I will never not be concerned for this man’s pants
wow how did this not win best choreography ??????
sophie lee you are doing the lords work
When they announced the nominees for Choreography I was really hoping this or Bandstand would win. As much as I’m sad this didn’t win I’m so happy about Bandstand winning because that story was so important to me as a granddaughter of World War II veterans. I wish it was a tie between Great Comet and Bandstand like way back when for Best Musical.
I MISS THIS SHOW SO DAMN MUCH
TGC DESERVED BETTER AND THATS THE TEA
I miss this show more than I can put into words
I'll never get over how dirty this show was done. Never.
you've done the lord's work by posting this here, thank you and bless your soul
god this is so beautiful ohfg
Still the best performance by FAR
I only knew of this musical since January 2018 but this is giving me so much nostalgia 😭😭
Been almost six years and I'm still mad.
Thank you so much!!! I LOVE YOU!
Love this!!!
This show is so much better than Dear Evan Hansen. It deserved to win more Tonys, and easily deserved Best Musical. It also should have ran longer.
This performance shook me to my core. I will remember seeing it for the first time for forever
Incredible performance
I love how uncomfortable the actors feel when they are a part of the show
*sheds tear* bless you for posting this
3:04 looks like andrei was there the entire time lmao (in the back with his lil' guitar)
EVen at the Tony's, the audience claps off beat... FIGURES
