Ten years ago when I was in college, I was made to watch a lecture about how Al Ghazali destroyed science in the Islamic World. That was in a dominantly muslim country. I already knew the western Paradigm was shifting and that was a nabsolute falsehood, yet there was before me an aged professor telling a room full of people of the old nonsense. I couldnt do anything back then, and thank you heartily for bringing this topic up.
Sadly not only western Lahhabists but also anti islamic elements in the Islamic world also make use of such claims to try turn people against the faith. Thank you and keep up the good work!

As a muslim we need to bring Imam Al Ghazali's discourse back to our academia. Al Ghazali has been represented as a person againts science by the Western and some liberal/ex muslims because there is a secret agenda wich is to divorce muslim from their faith. Al-Ghazali's was the intellectual that invigorated the Muslims world, people and rulers, against the crusades. Orientalists have been studying the Islamic world at the turning points and they knew that someone like Saladin was avid reader and follower of Al-Ghazali.

Al Ghazali literally stopped the best human evolution of academics by claiming numbers and science is the "Devil's writing"
I've listened to Neil Degrasse Tyson and he was right, why did the Islamic knowledge suddenly stopped? Something must have happen.
A history written by Muslim will try to make Ghazali as the good guy whole the truth he isn't. He was the man responsible for the worst decline in human academics. Sad really. You guys still haven't heal

@Yo D Yes, the Quran has been revealed in endorsement of other books, only the parts that weren't tampered by the priests, Allah says in the Quran: "48. And We revealed to you the Book, with truth, confirming the Scripture that preceded it, and superseding it. So judge between them according to what God revealed, and do not follow their desires if they differ from the truth that has come to you. For each of you We have assigned a law and a method. Had God willed, He could have made you a single nation, but He tests you through what He has given you. So compete in righteousness. To God is your return, all of you; then He will inform you of what you had disputed." [Quran 5:48]

This was a delightful conversation! I remember discussing Ghazali with a few people who'd have the same negative views of him, and I'd try to explain that we can't charge one man with the downfall of an entire creed. If you look at it closely, I'd be more critical of the Nizamiya education system that replaced the golden era of Islamic enlightenment. Thankyou for sharing this! Can't wait for the second part!

@Schorpi Oen it indeed was but they focused more religious education than the sciences. In baghdad, religious education and sciences werent mainly seen as opposition to one another. Of course, the wars and burning of libraries in Islamic territory certainly did adversely affect the progression of Muslims in all fields of education.

Salams, dear Paul and Shoaib. Your video was recommended by a dear friend. The presentation was clear and informative and I think Shoaib has more to say about Islamic Philosophy. I, personally, would like to hear more about the modern applications of the topic; in the contemporary context of the Muslim World.
The best part was when you mentioned St. Augustin, my compatriot and "neighbor" for years., even though Aquinas, in general, may be closer to Al Ghazali.
I love a quote from Abu Bakr Ibn Al 'Arabi Al Maliki, an Andalusian jurist, and theologian who met Al Ghazali, praised him and criticised him at least in two books. He said: "Our Shaykh Abu Hamid (Al Ghazali), swallowed the philosophers and wanted to throw up, but he couldn't." (Can be found in Siyar Aa'laam An-Nubalaa by Shams Ad-Dhahabi.) This may support bro. Shoaib's perspective.
Finally, I wouldn't use the opponents' way to prove them wrong; "Atheists didn't read", or "Orientalists didn't understand...," especially when the historical text welcomes many interpretations.
Thank you again for sharing this beneficial video. Peace and Blessings ♥

Not surprising . Abu Hamid Al Ghazali was such a phenomenal person who is reputed to have left his scholarly post in Baghdad and spent 12 years in search of Sufi realities in Syria ? before returning back to Baghdad and his family ( according to Idris Shah ) . His influence on the Muslim world remains to this day through his book " The Revival of the Religious Sciences ".

As a layman in Indonesia, I have heard that Al Ghazali was going to establish the fifth school of thought after the Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanafi and Hanbali schools, but did not get permission from the Prophet's majesty (through true dream visions). However, he was given the title Hujjatul Islam, because of his ability to fend off attacks from philosophy and science and technology on Islamic concepts. By the way, most Indonesian people take concepts from Imam Ash'ari and Al Maturidi in Aqidah or Theology, take one of the Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanafi or Hanbali Schools in law or fiqh and take from Shaykh Abdul qodir Al Jailani or from Imam Abu Hamid Ghazali in tasawwuf (ethics/akhlaq).

Dear @BloggingTheology, I kindly suggest conveying to Shoaib Malik that exploring Ibn Taymiyyah's works could offer valuable perspectives, especially concerning the debate on evolution. While Ghazali's contributions are undeniably significant, Ibn Taymiyyah's arguments present compelling insights that might provide a more conclusive stance on the matter. It could be enriching to compare both scholars' viewpoints for a broader understanding. Thank you for considering this suggestion.

Subhanallah! Imam Al-Ghazali, the ultimate genius of Islamic quantum mechanics and spiritual science (Tasawwuf), he's like a 'Tony Stark' of 1,000AD (minus the flamboyance).
My summaries of Imam Al-Ghazali's contribution:
    - Golden Age of Islam happened all thanks to his leap of faith.
    - A whole new level of Islamic education syllabus that are future proof. Without him, we may not have the Al-Azhar University standards we have today.
    - Authored tonnes of kitabul about Islamic science.
    - Ijtihad of the use of musical instruments for nasheed (including strings), which then ruled as Mustahhab by all 4 Mazhab, thx to Imam Al-Ghazali.
In a nutshell, all Islamic Academia which emerged from Imam Al-Ghazali is meant to ADVANCE mankind and this world THE MOST HALAL & MUSTAHHAB & FISABILILLAH Way, not like how the 'Sunnah-junkies' Wahhabi & Salafi's opinions, which explains why they can't move on. May Allah ﷻ guides them.

Jazakallahu khairan! I would greatly appreciate any points of clarification from Dr Shoaib regarding the “Intentions of the Philosophers” (Maqasid al Filasifah) and its place in the teachings of the Imam please. Thank you brother Paul for this excellent channel. One comment about this video is that Brother Shoaib had his own idiosyncratic defence of Evolution from a presumed 'ghazalian' perspective - I am inclined to say that Brother Shoaib is at most trying to hijack Al Ghazali. No matter, what frustrated me is that is Brother Shoaib told us that he's writing a textbook to teach evolution to Muslim. One thing is to write a scholarly book expressing your antitraditional views on that matter - and yes Shoaib's are antitraditional, but it's a whole different beast to write a textbook to teach future generations of Muslim your antitraditional views. I fear that Brother Shoaib with his current pursuit may be placing himself amongst those whose striving in this world go astray, while they think that what they are doing are good deeds.
    May Allah guide us all.

It would be amazing if the author add relevant citations (with page) and comparing them with the abridged Arabic text. Since when you use English translation, there will be confusion with modern term e.g. "Atheists". When you return to its arabic term, you will find the exact meaning that Al-Ghazzali meant. And it would be interesting to see the continuation of discussion about Al-Ghazzali and logic towards Causality. I would recommend a thesis by Indonesian Scholar, by Dr. Hamid Fahmy Zarkasyi, studied under modern Islamic Philosopher, Dr. Syed Muhammad Naquib Al-Attas, which discuss extensively how Al-Ghazzali viewed Causality.

Paul you asked a question about "where did the idea came from that AlGhazali caused Islamic Philosophy to stop?" and I remember a while back I was watching a "Talks at Google" lecture about Islamic Philosophy by Prof. Peter Adamson (whom you interviewed a couple of time) and if I remember correctly he said in the talk that the idea that Islamic philosophy stopped in the twelfth century became dominant in the west because of the fact that the west knowledge of islamic philosophy came only from the translations done after the fall of Andalusia (where famous philosophers names such as Ibn Sina and Ibn Rushd became known to the west) but it wasn't that the Islamic Philosophy stopped, it was the translations of muslims works of philosophy to western languages that stopped (and he sighted in that lecture the names and works of many muslim philosophers who were influential in the muslim world from the twelfth century to the twentieth century) and his point was that obviously muslim philosophers kept going but it was the west that was ignorant of this body of work of muslim philosophers.
Maybe you can have a third conversation with Prof. Peter Adamson about this topic and find out why people in the west are blaming AlGhazali for something that never even happened.
    That would be interesting

The “ mystery “ of an anti ghazalian rhetoric can be explained on two grounds
    a) it is borne out of simple polemics
    b) it’s emanates (no pun intended ) from the stance of Neoplatonist against ghazali. A large group of Muslims (orthodox literalist and Neoplatonist) have an axe to grind in regards of his position as a sufi and as an staunch anti Neoplatonist. These groups ignore his overall message and focus on his position on these issues painting him in a bad picture.

The people who say Al-Ghazali caused the decline of science in the Islamic world need to explain why MAJOR Muslim scientists who contributed to science in MAJOR ways kept appearing all over the Islamic world well into the 15th and 16th centuries. People like al-Bitruji, Mu'ayyad al-Din al-Urdi, Ibn al nafis, Nasir al-Din Tusi, Taqi al-Din, Ulugh Beg, Muhiddin Pīrī Reīs. All of these people contributer greatly to natural and social sciences and lived long after Alghazali died.
The reason for the decline was much more complex and it was more political/economical. It happened around the Europeans discovering the Americas.

From what I've gathered from Imam Al Ghazali is that it is not that science is inferior, but it isn't enough. What struck me as funny is that the Christians and some Muslims like to use the Kalam Argument yet it was the Kalam theology itself that Al Ghazali left, along with other schools of theology, seeing Sufism as the only thing adequate for him. There is a really interesting legacy of Al Ghazali, one especially in connection with Descartes and him being 500 years earlier than Descartes in the idea of doubt.
