    That “dating dungeon” thing was weird and at first I was like “well okay, bit odd but alright”. Then he drops down the age menu and my jaw actually dropped… Even their location is put in there, what does this have to do with gameplay besides being entirely creepy in every sense and actively looking for something predatory?

      honestly dating system was great, once you started chating with someone you can choose the level of the onsters in the dungeon and how much exp will every person get (from 0% to 100% ) I had high levels friends who would use one of their daily dates to "date me" just to help me level up. The weird size change thing and randomly calling a character a "pervert" didn't really get to me. What got to me was the fact that you can search for players by their age. The fact that the ages of players for a "child-friendly game" is exposed for all to see is really creepy and suspicious. Definately sounds like some kind of preditory shit is going on here.

      I honestly don't think it's supposed to be predatory, although it could be used as such. It was probably for people looking for someone with the same interests, around the same age and in the same state. So that people can easily make real life friendships and relationships out of it. Idk if it's just a difference of culture, but in America it's definitely a weird thing to have.

      Date dungeon moniker aside, I wouldn't mind a system that helped me meet more gamers who are out of school/college. Once you make the transition from schooling to working, scheduling changes a ton, and finding people 24+ish would make it so much easier to build lasting friendships online. I also imagine once I hit mid 30s in like, a decade, my ham ng habits will have changed a lot, and I will be looking for people in the same position. Allowing people to search for kids specifically is obviously fucked, but not age search in general.
      I think the problems here are the name, and being too specific. Time zone for location would be awesome because as an east coaster, it sucks to get along with people, then have to hop off 3 hours early because they're on west. My worst time playing an mmo was when I was doing week 1 Savage clears in ff14, building a team only based on skill, then ending up with a squad where I ended up screwing over my sleep too accommodate late time zones. Once I started to include time zone reqs of east or central, I was having a much better time. Age too I think is fine when you take out age ranges less than 18 or something like that. Calling it friend finder or any party system just makes it less creepy without doing much at all.

    I noticed there seems to be 3 types of MMOs that keep creeping up in the series:
    - Hardcore MMOs that don't want to railtoad the player, often by having experienced players take the job of teachers to their fresh bretheren, but without any population, thee is nobody to teach and the game feels empty and unguided.
    - MMOs that used to be fairly good, but ended up becoming a shell of themselves, getting patched with way to many unbalanced mtx with most of the retaining playerbase staying because they don't want to lose the money and time they invested.
    - MMOs that are genuinely bad from the start, but catch players with a gimmick, but unlike many "unique" MMOs, these ones failed with their gimmick.

    As someone who grew up playing the original Luna Online and Luna Plus, (it was my very first MMO) to hear the announcement that Suba Games would be bringing it back, was astounding not just to myself but to thousands of others.
    Then to see it be tarnished and spit on, was heartbreaking. I seriously didn't think that my very first MMO would make a pitiful come back like this and I curse Suba Games for it. They just did it for a quick buck and all of us original fans realized that. This isn't what I or anyone else wanted.

    My god, I actually played this as a kid and it was actually a lot of fun when it was official. I honest to God don't remember the cash shop (though I'm sure it existed off-site/out of game). The MMO itself died when gPotato went under, and since then, the fans kinda went wild with the source codes. The version in this video is actually moderated by fans as stated, and this means skills, exp, level-locked classes/races, etc was unlocked or modified manually by the fan who made themselves admin. The npc dialogue wasn't ever that bad, from what I remember, but the monster dialogue was added in as an April fools event or something back in official days, but I guess the fans never um, removed that. From what I remember, I had a lot of fun with this MMO back when it was run officially.

    So I played this back in 2009/2010 when it launched and the rabbit hole goes a looot deeper...
    For starters, this current iterarion of Luna online is like the 5th attempt to revive the game after its official servers closed in NA (it had an orinigal Korean version wich held strong for a while), suba games seems to only buy rights to dead games to try and profit from nostalgia, they developed 0% of the original game..
    And before i go any further, let me declare my bias with this game, I met my first Online friends in this game and even went to some anime conventions with a few, so i have very fond memories of the original and spent good times in each iteration´s forums/guilds so suffice to say i see this with a midl- to high rose tint lol
    I did not notice how sketchy the date dungeon seemed to outsiders until you mentioned it , but we´ll talk about that one in a bit, i no longer play this game but i had a lot of experience with it in my younger years
    The game was oficially ported to america by Gpotato (where i met my friends) and it did its best to hold strong triying to localize what the original Korean Devs made, but alas , like any meh-decent 2010´s mmorpg it didnt last more than 2-ish years , but before it closed it spawned many "private" severs hosting altered rates , events and cosmetics wich really fixed some of the worse parts IMO , making it a decent fun game to play !
    I moved a lot inbetween these as some managed to fund their server hostings and others failed, a lot of experimentation with the game source code happened among these people and some trully creative stuff has made adapting what the Korean Devs kept making, im not too sure when those closed but thats around the time it all started to fall apart, with no more content to add a lot more servers fell and some managed stable populations until a few years ago, I no longer know if they are active but the pages are still up
    At this point id talk about suba games´s ploy to cashgrab , but you might think Im still awfully quiet about that date dungeon thing, lets talk about that one first:
    Date Dungeons where a feature even when I first played Luna, and i dont have super clear memories of how it worked in there but the original idea never changed too much, you put some data In, add some likes and dislikes and look for matches, then you complete a small dungeon instance with a partner and win a good chunk of XP, In hindsight Id be suprised if something sketchy wasnt going on within some communities and yet;
    It was most dedicated players´s understanding that you only used it for leveling and mayybe meeting friends at best, the gender was linked to your characters gender and you could originally only "Date" the opposite gender so guilds would organize to level in pairs and boost eachother up until the weekly "DD limit" of each character, "mules" where very popular for this reason too, you could also raise the dungeons level and earn eve more exp for beating tougher monsters, so yo could boost a low lvl character with a hight level friend in one or two dungeons, so these leveling functionalities where most likely why it stayed in the game up until now, it was one of the best leveling methods, especially for alt characters
    The UI was never changed much even on the privater servers except for enabling any gender matches for easier leveling and just flat out removing the likes and dislikes, wich btw gave you a match % with anyone depending on the options picked, online dating functions where a bit more common back then i think, doesnt make them any less excusable now in hindsight however, you even had PUBLICLY displayed hearts between you and someone close to you with a high %match you could disable these and if i remember well the system was moderated often and they had people monitoring it in the official release so it didnt become too big of a festering ground for gpotato to manage
    It was not monitored that strongly on the private servers but most people in them where already veterans from gpotato or friends of them since it was a bit complicated to install the private clients, so Im assuming the idea of them used as just weekly exp dungeons held within most sub-communities after gpotato closed , in fact if my memories dont fail me i think the community asked for the date dungeons to stay when suba online wanted to flat out remove them in their own release , since they wehere such a good source of exp, same thing happened on some previous clients too
    Now to close out, the suba games situation, long story short, they promised the Luna online communities the world and took our money while we still believed them , they went as far as to close one of the most popular private servers after their advertisement campains WITHIN those same servers didnt give them enough money for their CRWODFUND campaign, so the Luna fandom even FUNDED their launch and steam greenlight , but when they had all they needed they just went silent and never followed up on promises and suggestions by the community, so the luna online you see in this video Is but the shadow of the shadow of what it once was on NA , i think some servers survive until today and there was a Luna Online 2 rebranded to some other name by the same Korean Devs, but its also pretty much forgotten for the NA community (that i know)
    Its a sad story for me because the game felt like it could ve been great but many circumstances prevented it from growing properly and its community was spread out, some of us never lost hope but i think Suba killed most of it , sadly,
    Oh and the game now has a bot feature wich never existed, so you can now program a bot for your character and letting it roam the wolrd , making it look like the game still has active players, wich is most likely what Josh found while playing, a lot of the good stuff invented by the private servers was never put in this version too, so its not even a good luna online version to play for nostalgia.

    • @JoNarDLoLz
      @JoNarDLoLz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      You were definitely right about the private servers one. Actually, the private servers of these bad MMOs were exponentially better because they understood the flaws and strengths of the game and developed systems that help make the game better to play. I used to hop on private servers around back then, but the one that stuck with me was Celestia Luna, it reduced the pay-to-win aspect of the game, though it still remained, it was more so minor advantages, while simple tools like fast travelling, stat potions, materials, and leveling were made available to everyone.
      In regards with Date Dungeon, same thing I felt, I never really thought too much about the matching system, but all I know is that it was the best leveling method you could do in this game, especially when you reach around 60-90, it becomes painful to level up chars that barely has any gear when mobs hit like a truck.

    • @Rylatar
      @Rylatar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Celestia Luna also used the pre-Plus version of Luna which was more polished and I've heard it was quite preferred by many people as Plus removed a lot of beloved skills for example. I played on Aeterna Luna for a pretty good amount of time which unfortunately was decently P2W (you could earn some premium currency with votes but there was stuff like stat-boosting costumes) but also did a good mix of Plus and vanilla like restoring many of the old skills.
      Celestia is still going strong surprisingly enough from what I've found out. I sometimes feel like diving into Celestia for nostalgia reasons but I know I'd get easily bored, played too many more enticing games at this point and it lacks things I like doing in MMOs.

    Back when this game first released for a western audience, I was absolutely hooked. The cute anime style definitely helped lure me in as a child, though it being "kid friendly" is the fattest lie I've ever seen. If my memory serves right, the patcher would change its background wallpaper randomly, and 2 of them were very sus and overly sexual for a supposed kid friendly game. I think they can be found online, they were official arts after all. One of them had the elf and human girl in provocative outfits with their breasts nearly spilling out of their dress, the other was them in their cutesy, kid-like chibi forms kissing on a bench...
    Needless to say, I had to be really careful hiding this game from my parents lol.

      On top of that, I remember how 80% of the community would engage in very deplorable behavior. I used to see a bunch of players hang out in the starter area wearing nothing but their underwear and start sexting beginners. Age wasn't a matter of concern, I was 11 at the time and a lot of grown men tried to bribe me into becoming their girlfriends in exchange for some cash shop items. Another guy I thought was decent at first, went the extra mile when he found out I played tales runner and said he'd buy me one of the premium characters if I gave him a skype call.
      I dismissed it back then because it wasn't uncommon for mmorpgs to have weirdos. But now that I think about it, Luna Online made it easier for them.

      I dont ever remember anyone saying it was ever kid friendly thats really my only problem with this whole thing. The box art literally has 2 elf girls with their tids falling out of their tops. Like I get waht everyone's saying in general but I don't get how it suddenly 20 years later became a kids game when it never was one. That's just a perception that frankly seems very shallow to me. It has a chibi art style, therefore its for kids? But it never was so that's wrong. I dunno makes no sense and then suddenly everything is a fetish for kids thing idk how this video got to this point but its creepier than the game to just randomly assume everything was made by pedos in order to attract children when NOTHING seems to say that at all about this outdated almost 20 year old random korean mmo. Maybe a bit of projection by the video creator.

    The bubbles actually reminded me of Spiral Knights, which has silly speech bubbles over enemy heads every April Fools' day. For instance, Constructs might say "Does not compute" or "I need your clothes, your boots, and your motorcycle" or shout at you in binary, slimes can tell you "A slime draws near! Command?", and Gremlins will quote... What else? Gremlins. Fiends, hailing from a literal corporate hell and basically being one giant Office Space joke, may complain that they've got a bad case of the Mondays or that someone took their stapler.
    Good ol' Sp'Knights, it was a good one. And as much as Mist Energy was a pain and as much as the Forge utterly blows, at least it wasn't... *this.*

    Having played this in my youth, it's definitely a product of it's time. Though, I'm surprised the "made by fans" rework seems to be worse off than the original game.
    BTW just a FYI, the worst thing about the original was it's abysmal drop rates for crucial weapons (IE: Lv.35~ 1h wand that's better than a 2h staff and allows for a mage to use a shield and can only be found by a certain mob, has a drop rate of roughly 1 in 5,000-10,000~) and it's absolute insane cost to build up to and create end game gear. That was exceptionally frustrating.

    Oh darn I remember this game long ago. I thought it was pretty decent and I never even touched cash shop.
    Sure I got a pet that looks like a floating fetus, and said fetus died for some reason when I lost a PvP duel without it getting hit, and pet revival items are locked behind the cash shop so I proceed through my game with a dead fetus, but it still was pretty okay back then, so I thought to myself. There's also the dungeon dates in which the naive teenage me thought I had to talk to other players who should be IRL females just to play through a dungeon and get more EXP because the alternative is a 0.01% EXP per kill in the open world.
    14:05 "You can't expect to aim at the anime crowd and accept low quality game design"
    Interesting. I also remember a time when there were a lot of people who hate anime MMOs just because anime and maybe they liked ugly looking 3D orcs instead. Now it gave me a different perspective why they hate anime MMOs.

    We also have a wooden roller coaster that only has the lap bar to keep you in, and the first hill drops so fast it immediately presses you up against the bar and makes you feel like if you're skinny enough you'll fly right out of the car (but you never do).

    Great review as always. Used to play this back in my early teens and remember it being really fun for the short time I was on it. It was a very social game and joining a clan made the experience great. You could also abuse the stats in this game unlike any other MMO I have come across, equipping a fairly early game shield to gain over 100% dodge chance and becoming immortal for the most part. I remember that when a certain amount of enemies attacking you they would all start hitting you despite the dodge chance. Wouldn't play it now though but fond memories nonetheless.
    Another MMO from that period I remember spending a ludicrous amount of time on was Megaten or Shin Megami Tensei online, no idea if you can still play that one though.
