Beautiful 914! Amazing restoration! I would love to get my hands in a properly relocated fuse panel as shown in the video. I think you mentioned you assembled that one. Yes, my question do you or can you assemble and sell to this 914 enthusiast? LOL! It looks fantastic and
My oldest brother came home from Vietnam and spent his life savings on a new 914 base. Loved that little car as a 10 year old kid, I was strongly considering buying a project 914 a few years ago but realized that I didn't have the talent or resources to restore one. I eventually purchased the modern "poor man's Porsche" or the grandchild of the 914 called the Boxster. Love your content John, thanks for sharing the story of this 914/6.
Hey , John thank you for your content… I’m a Gen-Xer , every thing you do I loved for years … Talking car with buddies,I get what the f*** are you talking about… YOU get it… I will listen and learn… All about… 928,914-6,old Jags,917-30/10, cam-am,Camal GT,Group , CANNONBALL!!!! Smokey and The Bandit All the old glory of the ‘60s-‘80s… You have made me more active in the lost world of motor sports… ROCK ON …. Let me know what I can do… THANKS BROTHER 😁😁😁😁
Yayayay. We didn't have to wait months in between Ficarra Classic videos this time :) Awesome video as always. Love the humor and the history as always, make for a great watch
What's up fellas!!! Ah... so the 930 IS a Turbo! 🧐. Keep bringing the geeky details, I *love* this stuff. You guys make us ALL better Porsche fans. Thank You!! for another great story! Mechanic Mike... you have a beard!!! Good stuff bruh! Hope to cross paths again... Till next time. PS - OH SH#$T!! Luft 9 is THIS WEEKEND!!! 😲 (Let me know if you need volunteers!! 😉)
YES! Finally! I am so tired of people saying 911 930 Turbo or 930 Turbo! It's just 930 or just Turbo. Finally someone with knowledge who said it! Now I have something to back me up on this.
This only time I saw a 914-6 factory race car was in the Watkins Glen Museum at the bottom of the famous hill on the old course. I also saw it replacement at Lime Rock a factory 924 Carrera.
Thanks for watching! The 914/6 should weigh under 2000 lbs, but leave a comment below with what you think! The first, closest guess gets a Ficarra Classic shirt!
914s are the hidden gems of Porsche. One correction though, the reason behind the torn metal in the passenger side floor is due to a know issue with 914s known as the "hell hole". the battery used to be placed behind the passenger in the engine comportment, and exposed to rain from the grill. so it would vent acid and rain would drive the acid down the chassis and then eat its way into the side long and floor pan. typical of a 914
also with the 914 it was a rushed design, and they didnt have it sorted until late 1972/1973 when they revised the gear linkage on the 4 cylinder, and fixed a bunch of problems the cars had, such as moving the gas tank away from the engine from the one I found, and they liked to break windows, about 3 times it did a Jay Kay and the Miura to my dad, and it stopped twice on the side of the road out of nowhere, thanks to a warm up system they had in them where the baffles for the air cooled engine which was off of the VW bus, stayed shut and starved the car of air, and even jay leno mentioned seeing them on the side of the road alot in the video he did on the 6 and the reason for the 6 being dropped was that because of US emmissions and the changes that happened, they had to up the engine size from 1.6 to 1.8, eventually to 2.0 liters to keep the power up, the original 1.6 that my dad had, a 1969 he bought new in germany on a 124 spider had only 90 horsepower and was only good for about a 110 and by that time with the 2 liter it was putting out as much power as the 6 so why would you buy the 6, and the gear linkage which was off of the VW beetle, was never fixed on that car although ironically he said if he was going to be a 6 it would be the one with the wide flares and tires, as somehow, someway he saw one of the 914 6 GT cars in germany around Rhote Vesson also the car was so bad that when he brought it back to the states in 1971, the Porsche dealership stopped honoring the waranty, and he sold it for a 1972 Ford LTD which is actually, still around and kicking while in my hometown where he settled, I went to this guys place, called Mr switch, and found a rusty, white porsche 914 back there as a kid on my bike way back when great design, rubbish automobile, and your better off buying a 73 over the 6 and sorting it out and the kicker was he bought it because it was car and drivers car of the year 1970 in 69 there, that was the last time he EVER trusted a car enthuasts magazine and started following consumer reports which he treats like a bible and has put the 5 year rule into me, always wait 3 to 5 years on a new design for them to sort out all the problems as even porsche can fuck up like GM, case in point the 996 and first the boxster with the IMS bearing failure ironically the rebirth of the idea of the 914 just with a 6, and I still wonder what the old 914 would do with a Golf Tiguan motor in it that has 200 horsepower, as it would probably fit in there and make that 914/6 look like a chump on one third the budget as their asking a 120K even for a non race car 6 now for a car they flat couldnt give away because of you crazy collectors, when you could just buy a 6 motor and throw it in and get the same thing and it would shift better, as the linkage from the VW beetle of that period is AWFUL lol and ironically the car he traded in on it, the only problem it ever had was that he bought the first and they did a recall to upgrade the front brakes, as what is italian for fix it again ferdinand, like the fiat was a better car than the porsche lol a 1967 Fiat 124 spider he bought in aviano italy, should of kept it lol but he wanted a new car, he was moving to germany from itay for his work, that stupid short wheelbase 911 scared him off of that, the car and driver thing came out and it was a practical design with two trunks and plenty of space for his now wife, my mother lol and also if you find a good 73 for 20 or 30K give me a ring a ding that will have all the problems sorted out of it, as he's still looking for one and that stupid fancy porsche place has some concorse restored 914 6 there instead of a 4 for a 100 grand with the webbers and the 911 S motor in it lol when a new 911 targa in miami blue was a 120 lol
HUZZAH! Thank you for some content on the vastly underrated Porsche 914, the car that WHOOPED the 911's booty at LeMans 1970! It also didn't help that the VW CEO (Heinrich Nordhoff) died his replacement was kind of a jerkface about the deal. I think an M471 car went for half a million last year and I think another one is soon to be auctioned off as well.
lots of old race car dashes r hardboard as we would call it because u could cut it easily to change things or add new stuff . what i was really going to ask is would it pass tech with a cage with either opening or removable door bars
Sofakingawesome. Trying not to swear when I love a channel and comment on it. so I’m making up shit to say my words. Love learnin’n stuff. Thanks JF. Class act bub
I hope Ficarra starts putting out Porsche content consistently. The Porsche advertisement verbiage from the 80's that Tom Cruise classically said in Risky Business still stands true today. "Porsche, there is no substitute." Keep your Lambos, your Ferraris, Bugattis and all the cheesy JDM caca. There is no one with more knowledge of the history and appreciation for the brand on TH-cam.
I'm here on behalf of the video "Detail of the cheaty things the Supra had (and could have had) for Lemons".. he says he's waiting eagerly to be made..
Fun Fact dude....Magnesium corrodes internally! My buddy threw out a few sets of Miniltes and Jongbloed Racing wheels from his restoration shop when "The Google Monster" bought out the industrial Park where his restoration shop was located. John Mozart has his garage down the block from where my buddies shop was from 1973-2016....Pure BS what happened in Silicon Valley.
The Chevy Corvair IS! "The Poor Man's Porsche!" and my buddy's 66 Turbo Corsa with a SU carb off a Jaguar certainly impressed the heck out of me in 1980 when he took me for a ride. The 6 cylinder "T" spec 914-6 motor was pretty LAME in its performance....Late 2.0 914's could easily me made to run better.
Very entertaining video, although i didn`t like the car for the look of it, neither the 911. Porsche did build pretty cars like the 904 or 906, but customers preferences told them to stick to the 911. The 914 was the wrong design, the wrong drivetrain concept, look at the MX-5/Miata and it`s success !
Yes Next question It's not rocket science, they are competent mechanics and p-car specialists 🙄 When is someone going to do a 914 hydraulic bounce build 🤔 and why hasn't someone done an AWD 914?
You say "VIN number" but want to call someone redundant when they say "930 turbo." Really? LOL Anyhow, something I find myself repeating to people with some regularity is that a race car is only new once. After that first lap, it's already taken some damage. You're hopping curbs, ringing the engine out, and already wearing the brakes. That chassis lives on for a long time, unless it takes substantial damage. It's okay. It's a race car. That's supposed to be what happens. A race car is only new once.
I'm here on behalf of the video "Detail of the cheaty things the Supra had (and could have had) for Lemons".. he says he's waiting eagerly to be made..
Thank you Mechanic Matt for moving on to the 914. 😂
The Wiz has spoken! I agree, awesome car. And mechanic Matt is the man
Gotta love it! Thanks for the comment, Wee-zard!
Beautiful 914! Amazing restoration! I would love to get my hands in a properly relocated fuse panel as shown in the video. I think you mentioned you assembled that one. Yes, my question do you or can you assemble and sell to this 914 enthusiast? LOL! It looks fantastic and
"930 turbo ...., just geeky" marvelous!
Excellent story telling as always sir. Would love to see you start a series of episodes highlighting careers of racers from any classic era.
My oldest brother came home from Vietnam and spent his life savings on a new 914 base. Loved that little car as a 10 year old kid, I was strongly considering buying a project 914 a few years ago but realized that I didn't have the talent or resources to restore one. Really enjoying the recent content. Great to see you posting again.
Honored to have seen this and it's progress 1st hand. Such a beautiful car!
Gotta love the hood prop!🤣
A co-worker of mine in the early 80’s had a 914-6, what a fun car, that handled great!
Good stuff John and Matt, can’t wait to follow this build!
Hey , John thank you for your content… I’m a Gen-Xer , every thing you do I loved for years …

Love the 914 content!
We’ve fixed the clutch! Can we still make it in time??
Love it! I gasped a little when you said you were changing the brakes, but I think you chose well in the end. Great video!
Yayayay. We didn't have to wait months in between Ficarra Classic videos this time :) Awesome video as always. Love the humor and the history as always, make for a great watch
I am really enjoying the content, very informative.
What's up fellas!!!

Another great video. I always learn something when you get going on your talks.
I am in great need of more extremely nerdy 20+ minute long videos from you. Please and thank you
Milk & Cookies...
Story time with Uncle Johnny.🤗
This only time I saw a 914-6 factory race car was in the Watkins Glen Museum at the bottom of the famous hill on the old course. I also saw it replacement at Lime Rock a factory 924 Carrera.
Can you make a history of trans am and can am
Yes. Yes I can. On the list and in the works.
Great Video!
Terrific video of one of the best Porsche to resto mod. 👍
I miss my 914 :( , hope to see this 914/6 at Luft this Sunday!
Top tier content! Keep the uploads coming, please. Love the bit of history at the end!
Thanks for watching! The 914/6 should weigh under 2000 lbs, but leave a comment below with what you think! The first, closest guess gets a Ficarra Classic shirt!
1998 lb.
1931 lbs
1974 lbs
1950 lbs is my guess
1875 lbs
Awesome! I remember watching these run at the Glen back in the day! Such a cool and unique car!
oh wow I was glad to see this at Luft!
Fascinating history, thanks for sharing your passion.

Yep, and the drain hole was totally inadequate as well.
also with the 914 it was a rushed design, and they didnt have it sorted until late 1972/1973 when they revised the gear linkage on the 4 cylinder, and fixed a bunch of problems the cars had, such as moving the gas tank away from the engine from the one I found, and they liked to break windows, about 3 times it did a Jay Kay and the Miura to my dad, and it stopped twice on the side of the road out of nowhere, thanks to a warm up system they had in them where the baffles for the air cooled engine

although ironically he said if he was going to be a 6 it would be the one with the wide flares and tires, as somehow, someway
he saw one of the 914 6 GT cars in germany around Rhote Vesson
also the car was so bad that when he brought it back to the states in 1971, the Porsche dealership stopped honoring the waranty, and he sold it for a 1972 Ford LTD
which is actually, still around and kicking while in my hometown where he settled, I went to this guys place, called Mr switch, and found a rusty, white porsche 914 back there as a kid on my bike way back when
great design, rubbish automobile, and your better off buying a 73 over the 6 and sorting it out
and the kicker was he bought it because it was car and drivers car of the year 1970 in 69 there, that was the last time he EVER trusted a car enthuasts magazine and started following consumer reports
which he treats like a bible and has put the 5 year rule into me, always wait 3 to 5 years on a new design for them to sort out all the problems
as even porsche can fuck up like GM, case in point the 996 and first the boxster with the IMS bearing failure
ironically the rebirth of the idea of the 914 just with a 6, and I still wonder what the old 914 would do with a Golf Tiguan motor in it that has 200 horsepower, as it would probably fit in there and make that 914/6 look like a chump on one third the budget
as their asking a 120K even for a non race car 6 now for a car they flat couldnt give away because of you crazy collectors, when you could just buy a 6 motor and throw it in and get the same thing
and it would shift better, as the linkage from the VW beetle of that period is AWFUL lol
and ironically the car he traded in on it, the only problem it ever had was that he bought the first and they did a recall to upgrade the front brakes,
as what is italian for fix it again ferdinand, like the fiat was a better car than the porsche lol
a 1967 Fiat 124 spider he bought in aviano italy, should of kept it lol but he wanted a new car, he was moving to germany from itay for his work, that stupid short wheelbase 911 scared him off of that, the car and driver thing came out
and it was a practical design with two trunks and plenty of space for his now wife, my mother lol
and also if you find a good 73 for 20 or 30K give me a ring a ding that will have all the problems sorted out of it, as he's still looking for one
and that stupid fancy porsche place has some concorse restored 914 6 there instead of a 4 for a 100 grand with the webbers and the 911 S motor in it lol
when a new 911 targa in miami blue was a 120 lol
I had a 1970 914 6 with a 2.7 l twin plug motor that I'd carve all the roads in Rancho 🧐
Saying "VIN number" is also redundant John! I feel ya..
HUZZAH! Thank you for some content on the vastly underrated Porsche 914, the car that WHOOPED the 911's booty at LeMans 1970! Thank you - a very interesting video!
Can you post more 914 videos?
All hail the algorithm
Your 930 turbo comment---> is that like when you say "vin number"?
Touche
I'm here on behalf of the video "Detail of the cheaty things the Supra had (and could have had) for Lemons".. he says he's waiting eagerly to be made..
I saw you there today
I had a 914 in high school, later in life i gave it to Milt Minter.
So John, this shop is your own deal?.....just curious. Are you buddies with Kevin Jeannette?

On the next one you should tell how the 914 destroyed the 911 on the track. It was the ugly step child that whipped the favorite son's arse!
You said 917 6 WTF
Shhhh. It was a long day haha.
Yes
Next question
It's not rocket science, they are competent mechanics and p-car specialists 🙄

My friend's dad had an old Datsun pickup and it hat dual spark plugs. It was just weird.
I know what Shop you are talking about
Lookin skinny buddy. Hope ur health is good.
So, a 917-6…
