Hi Randy, Best wishes for the season! I really like these Finetail stream rods too. I started with the 5 foot/5'-6" Light power 5 piece "switch" pack rod as a "secondary" rod while wading for trout and liked it so much I've purchased the 5'-6" Light power two piece. I fish the streams along the north shore of Lake Superior, from Thunder Bay east. These are generally fairly high gradient spate streams.
To explain, in low-water summer conditions I fish for 6-12 inch brook trout and resident rainbows using an ultra-light/super-ultralight (often a Majorcraft "area tuned" 6'-2") rod for smaller pools, pocket water, undercut banks, etc using tiny spinners and spoons. When I get to the larger pools or faster water I will use the (slightly) more powerful pack rod (as the fish can be in the 14-22 inch range) using slightly larger spinners and spoons (Nearkiss spinners are part of my arsenal) that can get down more quickly. These are all wild fish. As the streams/rivers up to the first impassable barrier are considered part of the Lake system all of the Brook Trout are considered "Coasters" (ie Lake run brook trout) and the limit is one fish over 22 inches. As a result, the fishing is essentially catch and release using barbless hooks.
Later in the season, when the Salmon and summer-run steelhead start to move in, I "change gears" using heavier rods and lures but carry the Finetail pack rod to (essentially) fish the same areas I use the ultralight set-up during the summer.
The Majorcraft "switch" rod is great for that purpose as it is very compact and straps in it's case to the side of my pack- I liked it so much I purchased a 5'-6" 2-piece for those times I'm keeping it "simpler" and just taking a single two-piece rod. Yes, I know I could just use the pack rod but you know the Japanese Domestic Market Rod disease... I've been looking at these glass models thinking they might be suitable for some of the more advanced casting techniques requiring a fast loading rod on small streams.

Nice video! I have two glass rods. They just have a different feel than graphite. I love the fishing part of the video, seeing that nice bend!

Randy, I followed your lead with the MC Finetail FSX-512 and love it. Before that the Finetail Area Stage. With this one, I may diverge a bit and get the BFS version as I've come to enjoy baitcasting more than spinnning and want to try a glass rod (though I do have several glass fly rods).

It is a great rod. If I make the move to Arkansas will need some more steam rods.

Randy I remember you mentioning all your reels have 2 line roller bearings. Do you just add another bearing to them on the other side of the roller and it works out, or do you only buy reels that come with them?

Thanks for watching. In the past I would add a bearing. But now I prefer to purchase reels that have 2 line roller bearings. My days of taking reels apart has come to an end...LOL. It is not hard to do but as we age the eyes aren't quite as sharp as they once were.
