  • Today I wanted to share my first time making a Water in Oil emulsion using the natural emulsifier Lecithin. Below I will have a list of the ingredients I used for you as a reference. This video is mostly about the process of making an emulsion, and less about the finished outcome. When trying out a new technique or ingredient, it important to get the manufacturing process down first!
    W/O Emulsions have mostly oil in them, but since they do contain water, they need to be properly preserved. They are creamy and thick and best applied at night time.
    Ingredients:
    Shea Butter
    Cocoa Butter
    Apricot Kernel Oil
    Sunflower Oil
    Avocado Oil
    Lecithin
    Glycerin
    Chamomile Hydrosol
    Geogard ECT (preservative)
    Lavender Essential Oil
    Palmarosa Essential Oil
    Rosewood Essential Oil
    Vitamin E

    great video, love your music and relaxed, fun style. I want to use a sunflower lecithin liquid to make a really simple cream of safflower oil and a vitamin B6 liquid which is supposed to relieve eczema, I'm looking for a similar consistency to your emulsion, what percentages do you suggest? I'll add a tiny bit of vitamin E oil and a naissance eco preservative but I can modify the percentages if you just help me on the ball park, oil, water, emulsifier. If you have time. Thanks for your great videos.

      Hello! Thanks for watching. For an w/o emulsion with lecithin I would suggest using 5-10% lecithin and 55-75% butters/oils. The rest of your formula will include water, preservative, antioxidant, and any actives. Happy formulating!

    Hey Caroyln! I'm used to oil in water emulsions as well. I was hoping youtube can provide me with some information. Thanks for sharing your experience with the w/o emulsion with lecithin :)! For a tip with the stir bar, use a pretty strong magnet that you can hold along with the beaker, preferably a knotch/knob on the other side to wrap your fingers around to keep it in place. I hate dropping stir bars into the sink or waste by accident lol!

    Hi! thank you for this video! I was just wondering, how do you determine which percentage of lecithin to use for any given emulsification? And also what is the ideal pH for a skin cream?

    • @CarolynRosefolksnaturalliving
      @CarolynRosefolksnaturalliving  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Percentage of lecithin with be determined by trial and error. For pH, your skin is naturally around 4.5-5.5 so the cream should be around that pH unless using an active ingredient that requires a specific pH.

      @@CarolynRosefolksnaturalliving Thank you for replying. I'm having trouble emulsifying... Is it possible that if the oil phase and water phase are too hot that they won't emulsify either? Do they have to be exactly between 70 and 75 degrees celsius?

    Why did you adjust the ph (with the citric acid)?
    What does this do?

    • @CarolynRosefolksnaturalliving
      @CarolynRosefolksnaturalliving  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your skin has a ph of 4.5 to 5.5. Which is slightly acidic. Adjusting the pH of the formula to that of the skin's is better for the skin, as well as helping deter the growth of bacteria with the help of a preservative. There is a lot that goes into formulating and pH is definitely an important aspect!

    May I please ask for some advice? I made a mixture of vegetable glycerin 2:1 with jajoba oil and didn't know it wouldn't naturally emulsify. I didn't want to waste it so I tried to stir in about 10 % lecithin. Nothing heated. Is there any way I can rescue this and fix it? Do the properties of the oils become degraded with heat? I am a rank amateur messing around. I'd be so grateful if you could tell me what to do. Regards and thanks for a lovely video.

    • @CarolynRosefolksnaturalliving
      @CarolynRosefolksnaturalliving  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glycerin is water soluble so you would probably need to add water and a preservative and heat the water phase and oil phase separately to 75C and then combine. It most likely cannot be fixed. Just see it as learning a new way to not do something! haha

      Hey Dan, I do have a formula and ingredient list. Although inactive and active ingredients would only be in regards to formulas wanting FDA approved claims for certain ingredients. Many cosmetics do not claim actives ingredients. The point of this video was not to share my formula, but to share the procedural aspects of a W/O emulsion with lecithin. It was an experiment, and therefore I did not include a formula for viewers to replicate. Also, I never claimed to be a scientist. I refrigerate all my ingredients except beeswax and jojoba oil. All ingredients have a shelf life, but they can be prolonged by being away from light and heat. Light and heat cause the oxidation process to accelerate, and will cause rancidity/oxidation in your products. Keeping ingredients in a cool and dark environment help preserve them. For some ingredients, refrigeration is essential. Such as hydrosols and oil like hemp seed that only have a 6m shelf life.
